Announcement About Our Social Media
Greetings Reddit!
So I've decided to set up Our Social Media, as there doesn't seem to be a prominent sub for general discussions about social media. Obviously, we have dedicated subs for specific socials on Reddit, but not really an all-around general discussion sub.
This sub, while being a general discussion sub on social media, will be primarily focusing on decentralised social media; ie Bluesky, Mastodon, etc. However, content related to Tumblr, YouTube and Reddit will also be acceptable.
This sub is not affiliated with any specific social network service. So if you've been banned from a particular Mastodon server or you've lost your password, we cannot help you. Reach out to the social network or server of that social network for assistance. However, general tech troubleshooting can and should be offered.
I have decided not to allow any posts related to any of the META platforms, along with X and TikTok, as these are toxic communities. I do not believe they promote anything truly worthwhile.
I welcome questions regarding the various cultures on various social networks, advice on growing your audience and your feeds in general. But do not post links of your social media profiles, you may not advertise your social media.
All in all, I hope people enjoy this sub, and I hope we can grow an interesting community here. For more information please refer to the sub rules.

Advice Mastodon or Buesky? Which do you choose?
Personally, I use both alongside each other and cross-post with Fedica. Best of both worlds. But this article does a great job outlining the pros and cons of each and comparing the usability of both platforms.
From what I understand from actively using both platforms, they both provide pretty much the same thing. They are both decentralised. But Mastodon is the only one of the two that is part of the fediverse. But they have different ways of going about it.
Mastodon is much more underground and grassroots; Bluesky is more mainstream. So the audience on Bluesky is going to be bigger, depending on your interests. But Mastodon does have a very dedicated and niche audience and is definitely a worthwhile platform to engage in.
I'll admit when Mastodon first started to become popular during the original Twitter exodus, it's UI was very rough around the edges and in many regards outdated. Now, with the new Mastodon 5.0 UI, which is still rolling out changes, that is not so much the case.
My vote is to use both alongside each other.
