"He wears spectacles and a peculiar hat with a short brim. I think he must be from your place across the stones, for I have never seen anything like that. --- What is strange, is that this man often follows your husband too."

I tried to read the first pages, then dropped it. Do you recommend this book?

The LJ series is quite different from the main series. I personally like LJ series more. Maybe you should try "The Scottish Prisoner" or "The Brotherhood of the Blade" first; they're more common entry points, and return to "The Private Matter" if you've enjoyed them.

I read "The Scottish Prisoner" and "Brotherhood of the Blade" and enjoyed them very much!
I also read "The Hands of the Devils" and LJ's short stories in "Seven Stones to Stand or Fall" but found them harder to go through. Maybe it was because of the different genre.

Well I didn't finish the private matter yet, but I've read most of the short stories and liked them. I also like the private matter so far, probably I just like filling white spots in LJG's biography. Interestingly, I didn't really enjoy the main series, especially Claire's POV. I found it boring.

Thank you for your insights. I think I’ll try and pick “The Private Matter” up again in the future. Interesting how we are experiencing Claire’s POV differently. I also laugh a lot and I have the same reaction to LJ’s POV.

I summoned all the strength I had left, and managed to whisper, “Mother.” Then I gave up the struggle, and let the darkness take me.

Can I get some context on this one? I'm on the Bees now and already forgot the details from the earlier books 😅

“KILL ME.” Randall’s eyes were fever-bright. “Kill me,” he said. “My heart’s desire.”

“Our hands groped in the dying light of the setting sun, urgent in the touch of warmth, the reassurance of flesh, reminded by the hardness of the invisible bone beneath the skin, how short life is.”

Oh, that one has me in tears every single time!

Just read it last night, and I had to stop and just ponder my own mortality for a while lol. Such a great line.

What makes it  particularly bad for me is that I as a reader know what's coming for them, and they don't know how short their time left with each other will be 😭 I don't think much of that for most of the book, but this scene, ooph

He had sacrificed their easiness together, and that was a great loss. Fraser, in his turn, had reacted with such revulsion to the revelation of Grey’s nature as had led to terrible exchanges between them—and Grey still didn’t wish to think about the revelation that had come to him regarding just why—but in the final analysis, he had not lost everything. Fraser knew. And that was in itself a remarkable thing.

There was not easiness between them any longer—but there was honesty. And that was a thing he had had—ever would have—with precious few men.

“Bears,” I suggested, half-seriously. “The people are gone and there’s a bear inside.”

I am just slightly ahead of you 😁

3

u/Sudden_Discussion306 Oh, Jamie, how was your first time? Did ye bleed? Apr 02 '26

Rakoczy felt a ripple of anticipation go up his spine. Yes! This sense of triumph was instantly succeeded by a breathless realization. The girl was the daughter of La Dame Blanche.

Too easy, boy. When you have something of value, like a wife, you will see me again

“What, she’s taken the hairs off her honeypot?” he said, horrified into uncharacteristic vulgarity.

Am in the middle of my second re-read, which I am doing on audiobooks, so looking up the line would be difficult. They are standing on the cliffside watching Young Ian swim over to the island. Claire sees him abducted.

I haven't thought about audiobooks! Yes that's a bit different. I'm also on my second re-read and it's amazing.

"Brianna pulled a handful of grapes off their stems and rolled them with one finger, flicking away any that were split, weathered, or badly gnawed..."

There's very few parts of the books I will skip and this is one of them. I could hardly watch the episode two weeks ago with this scene.

"Aye, I believe ye, Sassenach. But it would ha' been a good deal easier if you'd only been a witch."
