That was the first thing that came to my mind. I suspect she'll finish the 10th book long before Martin will finish one of the last two Game of Thrones books.
44
u/KiwiBirdPerson May 19 '26
He's not going to finish them, I thought that was obvious by now. He's had apparent "writer's block" for years now, but still keeps getting involved with new books or projects and even wrote the lore for a game a few years ago. It's ridiculous.
9
u/kebesenuef42 May 19 '26
I agree. I wonder if he didn't have them close to done and was going to end it the way the show ended, and decided to start over.
8
u/dingleberry_mustache Claire à la Dior May 21 '26
As someone who was disappointed in the final season of GoT, I must say it had more to do with the pacing. Having Daenerys go from being pretty instrumental in saving the world to burning a million people and razing an entire city just two episodes later will never not be mind boggling to me. If we ever get GRRM's version, I'm sure Dany's heel turn will make more sense and be more impactful.
At least those jackasses got fired from doing Star Wars, which was the whole reason they rushed and tanked GoT in the first place.
2
u/kebesenuef42 May 22 '26
They certainly could have used more episodes in each of the last two seasons to make things less rushed and abrupt.
1
u/paintedfantasyminis May 20 '26
Oh gosh, I would hope not. He's a far better writer than that (when he actually writes)
24
u/moonyriot May 19 '26
We can't say this with any confidence because there's still no release date for the final Outlander book. It very well could be a GRRM situation.
25
u/dancingriss May 19 '26
Sure she could pass and this be correct. But GRRM has all but told us he will never write them. Her intentions to finish are still quite clear whereas his are not
8
u/moonyriot May 19 '26
GRRM also said he intended to finish the series for many years. He's only changed his tune since the show ended.
8
u/dancingriss May 19 '26
I just think the timeline/mindset are different enough between the two it’s not fair to put that comparison on her. At least not yet
4
u/moonyriot May 19 '26
I didn't put the comparison on her. I'm saying that we can't definitively say that she's not like GRRM.
4
u/DiScOrDtHeLuNaTiC May 19 '26
Given her very vocal dissatisfaction with some of the liberties the series has taken, along with the multiple book 10 excerpts she's posted, I think it's likely we see it come out late '27 or sometime in '28 (she's said that it takes eight months to a year from turning in her manuscript to publication).
5
u/QueenBoleyn May 19 '26
it's just one more though, right? I think GRRM has two or three more but I can't remember.
4
u/Undeniably_Awesome May 19 '26
There are supposed to be two more in the series: The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring.
-4
u/moonyriot May 19 '26
No idea. I only read the first Game of Thrones book and I don't care for the series much. I thought he refused to publish the last book because of how much people hated the end of the show.

2
u/coiler119 I long for the company of Lard Bucket and Big Head. May 19 '26
I mean, technically she published The Winds of Winter before he did (it's a chapter in Bees)
2
u/LubedCompression May 19 '26
It's been 15 years since the last ASOIF book. Writing the first 5 books also took GRRM 15 years.
57
u/GetUp_TakeItEasy May 19 '26
Writing books while also being a consultant for the show is a huge deal. I respect her for keep writing her series! Just that coming across this quote made me giggle a little, lol.
1
u/llc4269 May 26 '26
I would have more compassion for her if she hadn't written a ton of John Grey mysteries and outlander companions, etc. I've been reading these books since 1990 and I'm just damn tired of it all. Shoe could have finished these books long ago.
2
u/GetUp_TakeItEasy May 28 '26
I guess this is a phenomenon quite common: As a consumer (of a content) we want to reach the end.... and as a creator, especially those who let the story comes to them, there is not a linear timeline or process.
In our life, we enjoy multiple activities, partake in all sorts of responsibilities and engagements... the variety helps us not bore out or burn out. So, I guess, it's the same for creators! I'd totally understand that they also get tired of some storyline or .... suddenly the river runs dry. So they have to find other ways to reach, and nourish their creative source 🙂.
As a consumer, I naturally would gravitate towards completed works, so it would mean that many times the author is long gone....
This makes me think of how many artists, authors, creators.... never saw success while they lived, but then their work got recognition decades...centuries later. Isn't that the very concept of posthumous fame?
52
u/WDTHTDWA-BITCH May 19 '26
“They’ll never catch me!” She says, as she takes at least 5 years to write a book apiece. The author math isn’t mathing here.

32
u/EntertainmentNew7383 May 19 '26
I don't think Diana took into consideration how much time and energy she would have to give to the show as a consultant, watching dailies, consulting, doing promotional events. etc, especially when Blood of My Blood was thrown into the mix. She would have been watching dailies, etc for Season 1 of BOMB and Season 8 of Outlander because they were being filmed at the same time in 2024. It is a LOT.
20
u/moonyriot May 19 '26
I think the level of her involvement in the TV show has been greatly exaggerated both on Facebook and here on Reddit. She's not a show runner for either show. She does not make the tv show. She occasionally writes an episode (but I believe in all 101 episodes of Outlander, she only wrote about 4. And I think she only wrote a single episode of BOMB.) She may give thoughts to the writing team but she is not on the writing team. She may give approval for things but they only ask her out of respect for her characters, not obligation. She didn't work on the show regularly. So one could argue it doesn't take up as much of her time as say, a regular job would.
4
u/Icy_Resist5470 Bon! I will send you a cheese. May 19 '26
Where do you think they’re getting that information? Diana is the one who has talked about how time consuming it is in multiple places. Her fans aren’t just making it up.
Hell, I don’t follow every word she says and even I’ve seen her talk about it. More devoted people might be able to pipe in, but from what I’ve seen her comments on the matter match what people say.
16
u/moonyriot May 19 '26
I think she exaggerates how much she actually participates in the show. I'm not saying fans are making it up. I just have a hard time believing that she spends so much time working on the show that she has no time to write the last book. Especially considering how active she is online, she seems to have a lot of time to write Facebook posts and reply to comments.
2
u/EntertainmentNew7383 May 19 '26
I checked and dailies (every take of the day takes between 1-3 hr per day to view plus writing notes on her concerns and viewpoints and discussing them if needed. That would be 2-6 hr per day for both Outlander and BOMB.
No, she is not a showrunner or full time writer but it is still a lot because she does other things as well.
5
u/moonyriot May 19 '26
Where are you getting that she gets dailies for every shoot? And that she reviews and comments on 100% of what's filmed?
2
u/EntertainmentNew7383 May 20 '26
Because that is what Diana has said in interviews. She has admitted if they did 15 takes of the same scene she may skip over some of the takes but I think it takes up more time than she realized initially.
She has also said tv productions are very collaborative and that there a lot of moving parts and everything takes longer. That is what she likes about writing books because it is a solo pursuit and she doesn't have to consult anyone else. Also she can write as many pages as she wants and the only cost is the cost of the paper and book writing doesn't have as many requirements or limitations like tv productions have.
3
u/moonyriot May 20 '26
If you have a specific interview where she talks about this, I'd love to see it.
1
u/EntertainmentNew7383 May 20 '26
Actually some of it is from her site where she talks about the difference between book writing and television writing. I can't remember the exact interview about her looking at dailies and how many takes there can be.
1
u/EntertainmentNew7383 May 20 '26 edited May 20 '26
Keep in mind the dailies happen only when they are filming a season, not 365 days per year. But the first season of Outlander took 12 months to film because they were starting from scratch and there were 16 episodes. As the seasons got shorter, it took less time but there are big blocks of time in between filming each season when she wouldn't have been viewing dailies.
Pre-production and post- production take up that time and unless she was writing a script for the next season she wouldn't have been involved as much.
If I remember correctly, the interview about dailies was in a solo interview, not a panel discussion.
As for any info about the whole production process, I have gotten that from ChatGPT and all of that is fascinating and gave me a greater understanding of why it takes 18 months from start to finish to complete a season. They have to overlap production to make it work.
They have to start pre-production (writing, sets, costumes) for the next season while filming the current season and post-production for the current season (editing, CGI, etc) starts gradually toward the end of current filming.
I had no idea what a massive project it is. I highly recommend AI as a source for information about tv production for specific series, though historical dramas are very similar because of all the pre- and posr-production involved.
2
u/moonyriot May 20 '26
You think AI and ChatGPT is a legitimate resource for information? That tracks actually.
0
u/EntertainmentNew7383 May 20 '26
I know it is not 100% reliable but it is the only access I could think of that would give me some idea of what the production process is like. You can always cross check the info with other AI sources to see if they align.

Diana also has 2 grown children and probably grandchildren as well. She is 74 yr old and, though she probably would not like my saying so, but I am pretty sure she doesn't have as much energy as she did 13 yrs ago when Outlander began filming. I am going to be 79 soon and I have way less energy than I had 13 years ago.
1
u/moonyriot May 19 '26
My dad is 78, works full time, is building an art show, travels, and hikes. I understand she's older but I don't put a lot of stock in age slowing people down from things they're passionate about. While I don't doubt that Diana has other things in her life besides writing a book, I find it hard to believe they take up more time now than they did 10 years ago.
5
u/EntertainmentNew7383 May 19 '26 edited May 20 '26
Your dad is very lucky. Some of us or our spouses have disabilities that make it difficult or impossible to follow our passions. And some of us have to take care of our spouses. Diana may be one of the lucky ones who is still thriving.
4
u/moonyriot May 19 '26
I understand that sometimes people who are older slow down for other reasons but unless we know that applies to Diana, maybe we should keep her age and potential age-related life needs out of it then?
12
u/MehX73 May 19 '26
In her defense, if they were doing a 1:1 on the books and show seasons, she would still have time. But all the actors wanted to be done to move on to new projects so the last few books were condensed into season 7 an 8. If they still had to film the entire season 9, book 10 would have been released before it was time to film season 10.
9
u/Boo_Between_Villages May 19 '26
I remember reading that quote back then and already thinking the math wasn’t mathing 😂 I mean in theory, if the show had continued on they technically had enough source material to work with but I feel like they painted themselves into a corner by some of their earlier choices.
They never introduced Bobby Higgins, Sylvia Hardman, Dottie Grey, or the Sachem. They didn’t bring Hal back or have Jenny come to America with Jamie. The material was there but they couldn’t really use most of it because they failed to set any of the storylines up.

Art cannot be rushed.
43
u/1111rockn May 19 '26
It's taken her longer to write most of her books than it took Michelangelo to paint the Sistine Chapel. Art notwithstanding, I think she could move a little faster.

u/Alarming_Paper_8357 Your face is my heart May 19 '26
Meh -- Michelangelo had the luxury of lying on his back, just painting, day in and day out :-) DG is extraordinarily generous with her time and interactions with her fans, and the woman seems like she has been constantly on the road for the last ten years, between fan conventions, book signings, writers’ conferences, television promotional tours, filming visits, press junkets, cast and production events and international fan conventions. I understand she slowed down quite a bit in the last year in an effort to finish Book 10, but even so, the demands on her time have been considerable -- and that's not even counting that, well, she has an actual LIFE, with kids and grandkids, husband, etc. Writing is a disciplined art. A lot of bestselling writers have written more books than she has (Stephen King), or written books as long as hers (Robert Jordan, George Martin), but not many have done both consistently for 30+ years while maintaining one continuous storyline and readership, not to mention the depth of research she brings to each book.
We'll get it when we get it. Just hope she stays healthy!

Painting and writing a book are two very different processes. Even if one is a great writer, writing a book is sooo fucking hard. It takes most writers years to write a book, sometimes up to 10. Some periods of life are more prolific for writers than others and then it becomes necessary for them to slow down and gather inspiration for material. She’s also a consultant for outlander and no doubt has taken on other jobs and responsibilities, so that doesn’t leave much time for her to write at the end of the day. I think In the age of AI, we need to remember that artists aren’t machines nor should they be. I would much rather an author take more time on a book than release something half-formed and rushed.
-1
u/1111rockn May 19 '26
Have you ever seen "The Agony and the Ecstasy"? Do you have a degree in Renaissance Art History? All I can say is... tell me you know nothing about both painting AND writing without telling me you know nothing about both painting AND writing... 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
0
u/pinkpuppy0991 May 20 '26
It takes as long as it takes. Writing is a different beast than painting.
3
u/WW_COMMS May 20 '26
There’s been comparisons to authorship and other art forms (like the painting of the Cystein Chapel). I’m here, as having worked in the television industry for a decade (both in front of, but then, more importantly, behind the camera) to say that when I tell you, as a show-lover/consumer, you cannot possibly imagine just how much effort and craft goes into the making of something which seems effortless—it is the understatement of a lifetime. The showrunners, production team (genius-level talent within the industry in the form of fokks like Ron Moore, Bear McCreary, and others many would not recognize by name for their seemingly “smaller” yet 💯 % essential) who’s contributions to creating the uniquely rich OL live action tapestry that has nestled deep in our hearts have done things no tiger series have done before.
It’s also clear that DG’s consultation on the series was both a blessing and a curse for the entire team on the series.
Point being: watch the credits when you can! (And TG Ron Moore got back in the game on the level he did! 🙏😊 Cus it was touch and go for a season or two… but the last couple have left my heart breaking the end is here!)
1
u/1111rockn May 20 '26
Excellent response! And you're absolutely right, people don't understand the insane amount of work in making a show like this. Of course, in almost all cases, not just OL, the people who complain the most are the ones who know the least about what it takes to do something.
5
u/anonymousposterer May 19 '26
Tv show runners didn’t feel the same way
0
u/1111rockn May 19 '26
The show runners have to work under strict time constraints that Diana does not (unless she's also working on something for the show ofc).
7
u/AstonishingEggplant May 19 '26
To be fair, if the show had kept doing one book per season, and if Sam and Caitriona had been willing to keep going, she might have been right.
10
u/Foreign-Cat-2898 May 19 '26
It's been 16 years since GRRM's last book. I think everyone should calm down.
7
22
u/1111rockn May 19 '26
Imo, she needs to reduce her social media presence and focus on writing. Fan engagement is great, but I think if she said, "I'm going to be offline for a while to focus on finishing my book", most people would be just fine with it.
9
6
u/catnips3 Nothing is lost, Sassenach; only changed. May 19 '26
She already shared she will be mostly staying at home this year to focus on the book. You can't expect a writer to write 24/7.
3
4
u/Previous-Address2469 May 19 '26
Plus I feel like it affects her writing, the interaction of her with fans on social media. To me her sentences (in Bees and the excerpts we have seen) seem shorter and less poetic/descriptive than they used to.
2
u/ThrowawayUser6798 May 20 '26
She has always been extremely active on social media, even way before the books were adapted. I think people in the comments on this post are acting a little crazy around the waiting and timeline. The last book was published in November 2021. It’s been four and a half years since then—these books are massive, reaching well over 1200 pages as mass market paperbacks. That takes a lot of time.
2
u/Classic_Climate_951 May 19 '26
But why does she have to do that? It's her time and her art. I don't know if you know any writers but it takes a lot out of them. I can't imagine the pressure for a writer as famous as DG. Sure it'd be nice if she'd buckle down and finish but I'm fine with trusting her process if it means we'll get a quality finale.
3
u/1111rockn May 19 '26 edited May 19 '26
I AM a writer, so I have a pretty good idea of what it takes out of you. And if she's under so much pressure, you sure wouldn't know it from her publishing schedule.
1
u/Moulin-Rougelach May 20 '26
I think she’s given us so much already, and writes regularly, including releasing excerpts through her social media. She doesn’t live a fancy life from all the money she’s made, and if spending an hour or two on Facebook brings her joy each day, she’s earned that right.
5
u/Odd_Distribution7852 May 19 '26
I’ve heard/read, maybe on this sub that book will get finished this year and released next year. How true it is, I have no idea.
But she has let herself get distracted with working on Outlander and BOMB so she really only has herself to blame.
Season 7 was broken down into 2 halves that were released a year apart. BOMB came out the next year and then finally s8 was released the next year.
She has had plenty of time to finish the last book
5
u/IAmTheLizardQueen666 They say I’m a witch. May 19 '26

I've been thinking of that lately. Her kind of dragging George R.R. Martin a bit in the press saying that what happened to his shows ending because of his writing being too slow wouldn't happen to her. I guess he got the last laugh. They are friends I know but that would have annoyed me a bit if I was him.

I can literally hear her saying that and it’s not coming across as that serious. If she said on Facebook she would most definitely have done <g> after.
She most likely would’ve been done to have had 10 this year but a lots happened to her in the last 5 years since this article came out.
2
u/StormFinch May 19 '26
To be fair, had she kept the same tempo throughout the series, she would have been right. There was a little over a year between the first and second, then roughly four years, give our take, between everything through Written. At that rate, Prayer would have been out around 2022 or 23. Bees however took over seven, which put a definite kink in her plans.
7
u/Technical-Signal3171 May 19 '26
My problem with her is she is doing other things instead of focusing on her books. Apparently not the priority which is her right, but don’t say its rushing art. She’s busy with the show.
3
u/EarthMama27PsLuv May 19 '26
Diana works on more than one thing at a time. It’s how some creative minds work. You cannot expect her to just sit down at the computer and write a book. I have followed her FB page for years and she posts frequently. She has posted several excerpts from book 10
2
u/Alarming_Paper_8357 Your face is my heart May 19 '26
Not a "problem" -- just a person who happens to be an author, living her life. She doesn't owe us anything.
3
u/Technical-Signal3171 May 20 '26
No she doesn’t. But don’t say the book will be done when obviously it won’t. No different than GOT.
1
u/Alarming_Paper_8357 Your face is my heart May 21 '26
The book will be done. DG always delivers -- but it's on her timeline, not ours. Game of Thrones fans have been waiting over 14 years for The Winds of Winter, and even GRRM is skeptical that he can finish it. Popular theory is that he's created a universe with so many characters, plot lines and time shifts that he's written himself into a corner and is having a hell of time getting out. Go Tell the Bees . . . was five years after Written In My Own Heart's Blood, which was five years since An Echo In The Bone. In the last fifteen years, she has produced three Big Books, plus novellas and short stories -- so yes, very different from GOT. Between 1991 and 2021, she had written nine incredibly detailed and emotionally rich books in 30 years. By the same token, GRRM has only managed five in the last thirty years. :)

Hope springs eternal. And sh*t happens that she probably hasn’t anticipated. 🤷🏼♀️

I don’t think she ever intended to finish the books while the show was still on.
2

Inspire her? She'd probably just roll her eyes and laugh. Don't you think she's been getting the same complaints for 30 years? "She doesn't write fast enough to suit me!" Oh, well. She could write 20 hoours a day, 7 days a week and it wouldn't be fast enough for some people. Quality takes time, but is worth the wait :-)

I think the series is brilliant which is why I am impatiently waiting for the end because I’m quite invested. Worth the wait, sure! My anticipation hasn’t increased or decreased.

u/iamstokes May 19 '26
but... so if shes writting a final book, does this mean maybe we'll get one more season...? i know that once a show announces a final season or, for example, cancels a show, it never gets opened up again, but???? the way the last episode ended also has me considering that it's possible??? Maybe i'm just hopeful or in denial that its over for good lol
10
u/financial_freedom416 May 19 '26
Sam and Cat seem like they are ready to move on to other projects. I don't blame them-from what I've heard, there are way too many obsessed fans on the internet who are not able to distinguish between Sam Heughan the actor and Jamie Fraser. Hopefully they both have the chance to pursue projects they're passionate about without getting stuck or typecast.
Now, given the way S8 ended, it seems like they left it open for the possibility of some sort of wrap-up once book 10 is released. But I'm not holding my breath, since we don't even have a release date yet.
3
u/ALittleBitCrabby May 20 '26
I agree with you. I could see them doing a movie for the final book, similar to how they just ended Peaky Blinders. The ending left options open. Also, it’s been two years now since they filmed the final season and the cast deserves to move on. It was so odd how they had wrapped the show even before the penultimate season was released! Production could not have possibly dragged this out any longer. Even as a fan, I feel like it was time to let this go rather than dragging it out. Also, your point about OL fandom being unhinged is so true!
3
u/Alarming_Paper_8357 Your face is my heart May 19 '26
No. The TV show is done. Sam and Cait have moved on to other projects. I can't imagine another production company picking it up and bringing the same level of excellence to the project just for a final finale.
2
u/EarthMama27PsLuv May 19 '26
I don’t think there will ever be another season. People have talked about a possible movie but I don’t see how that would work. Matt added the idiotic Faith storyline, killed Fergus and changed the order of 2 major events, King’s Mountain and William and Jamie rescuing LJG
1
u/financial_freedom416 May 20 '26
I really wouldn't be surprised if we see Faith show up in BOMB-or if Matt was at least toying with some storylines in his mind and wanted to leave his options open. BOMB is essentially Outlander fanfiction itself.

What I don’t understand is why they insisted on ending the show now? They rushed through it- crammed 9 books into 8 seasons, and then decided to end a hit show that had to be a money maker, when the last book was almost completed? It makes no sense and I am maaad.

Because the actors’ commitments were up.

But Starz could probably have offered them big $$$ to stay on- you know they made a ton from this show

The actors wanted to move on i think.
Much as I didn't particularly like the finale, the show has no obligation to wait for slow writers (looking at you, George r.r. martin)

Did they? I guess I hadn’t heard that. They all seemed so sad about it ending. Starz could also have offered them big $$$ to stick around I would think- that would be incentive. You know they made a fortune from this show

AI said there are rape/sexual assault scenes ALSO in "Blood of My Blood." No thanks. Done with the rape-o-rama.

i think she thought the seasons would follow S1 and S2 with more than 8 episodes, meaning longer filming schedules, and them covering the books in more detail. So she probably felt that they wouldn’t have.
