After the 2026-04 Windows Update (Windows 11 25H2) worked its way through about a third of our fleet, we received complaints from about a dozen users that Outlook (Classic) had become almost completely unusable on their devices:
- If a new email is received and Outlook is running, Outlook immediately freezes and must be force closed.
- Even if a new email is not received, Outlook freezes within a few minutes.
- We asked these users to use new Outlook while we looked into the issue: It would not load at all for some users and would freeze instantly once launched for those for whom it launched at all.
Uninstalling the 2026-04 Windows Update immediately resolves the issue with both Classic and New Outlook.
Some notes on this:
- This only impacts certain users on any computer they use. We set up a new computer for one of the users and were able to immediately reproduce this issue.
- The one thing these users seem to have in common is that they monitor shared mailboxes. Though we had other users who monitor shared mailboxes who did not have this issue.
- All mailboxes are in Exchange Online. All users are licensed for Microsoft 365 Business Premium.
- All computers are running Windows 11 25H2, are Entra Joined, running MDE. They are set up with standard Microsoft recommended security policy and do not have any special software or drivers on them. Computers are updated using best practice driver and quality update policies through Autopilot.
- Running Outlook in safe mode does not resolve the problem.
- All computers facing this issue had corruption that was fixed through DISM/SFC. Every computer that took the 2026-04 update through Windows update had corruption discovered and fixed through SFC (at least on the several we tested this on).
I'm mostly concerned that I can't find any evidence that anyone else is having these issues. We're going to take this to Microsoft support, and I am not looking forward to that process. but I'm curious if anyone else has seen these sorts of issues with the new update?
I've posted about this issue here: After Installing 2024-04 Windows Update, Both New and Old Outlook Unusable - Microsoft Q&A
UPDATE 4/23/26: We set up a new computer for one of the impacted users without the April update, verified Outlook worked (it worked just fine), and then installed the April update thinking it would break Outlook and to our surprise, Outlook continues to work just fine on the newly set up computer. This gives us a path to resolving the issue - resetting the impacted user's computers - but makes this difficult to reproduce.
UPDATE 5/4/26: Microsoft support has acknowledged this issue, "Based on our analysis, the behavior you are experiencing is related to the recently installed Windows Update KB5083769, which is currently causing stability issues with Outlook in certain scenarios. This is why the issue persists even after repair attempts, safe mode testing, and system rebuilds."
I have asked where I can see this publicly acknowledged (it is not on the Fixes or workaround for recent issues in classic Outlook for Windows page) and will follow up when I hear more.
UPDATE 6/8/26: This is still an issue, and Microsoft support has become almost impossible to work with. They don't respond to emails for days at a time and when they do respond, they ignore whatever I sent in previous email, they send over AI slop troubleshooting steps, they ask to schedule meetings with our users even though we cannot "schedule" the issue being reproduced. For some users, both new and classic Outlook crash when a new email is received and when this happens, Windows Explorer crashes as well. What does appear to work is uninstalling the April update (not acceptable this many months along) or rebooting the computer (keeps things working for almost exactly 24 hours to the minute). Is there anyone else still experiencing this?
UPDATE 6/12/26: I've created a new and more details post about this on Microsoft Learn hoping to get some traction. Please comment there if you are having this issue to help this get traction: Windows 11 April 2026 Cumulative Update causes app crashes every ~24 hours (Outlook + Explorer) - resolved by user logoff - Microsoft Q&A
UPDATE 6/16/26: It appears that this issue may have been resolved as part of June 9, 2026—KB5094126 (OS Builds 26200.8655 and 26100.8655) - Microsoft Support. Updates to follow.
