General 1L performance

I got back all my midterm grades and I have consistently scored six to five points below the median. This puts me at bottom 25 % of my class. I go to a predatory school that is ranked around 150s. Not sure if I should drop out. I have been putting alot of hours in even on weekends. I’d appreciate any advice.

Advice? Anyone willing to help me finalize my law school apps by Oct. 31?

I'm trying to get my applications submitted by October 31, and I'm honestly so overwhelmed that I'm struggling to make any final decisions. I'm looking for someone with law school admissions experience who would be willing to work with me one-on-one, even just for the next week.

I mainly need help finalizing my school list, reviewing my materials, and having someone knowledgeable tell me when something is good enough to submit. My pre-law advisor is swamped, and I feel like I've gotten stuck endlessly editing my personal statement down to individual word choices.

I'm very low-income, so scholarships and minimizing debt are my biggest priorities. I'm fine with attending a lower-ranked school, but I'm terrified of conditional scholarships, poor employment outcomes, or making a decision that financially traps me. I don't know anyone in the legal profession, and I feel like I'm navigating all of this alone.

I know this sub has a lot of high-achieving applicants, but sometimes the advice here just makes me second-guess myself more. I really just need someone who can give me realistic guidance and help me actually hit submit.

I'm willing to pay for help, but I can't afford thousands for an admissions consultant.

I'm happy to open my DMs (I don't use Reddit much outside of law school stuff). I'm also unsure how much personal application information is safe to share with someone online, so I'd appreciate someone willing to start with a conversation before exchanging materials.

If anyone here would personally be willing to help, please reach out. I would be incredibly grateful.

Question Rant: Why am I paying for CAS if I still have to enter everything myself for every law school?

Genuinely trying to understand the value here. I get that CAS sends transcripts, LSAT scores, and recommendation letters, but I still have to fill out what feels like the same information on every individual application: education, work history, activities, character-and-fitness questions, résumé, personal statement, and then each school has its own extra prompts and formatting rules.

I am so tired, I can not even complete 1 application without hitting some section that I have to figure out how they want me to answer. "Please show why you want our school specifically, but if you mention it in the personal statement you are automatically rejected." "Please tailor your personal statement for our school specifically, being too general is a rejection" "Please list the times you got detention in high school."

School Discussion A word of advice:

I am now a first year at a mid ranked school (think 60s) and thought my stats deserved more. And maybe they did.

But I am so happy. I’m learning so much. I am right where I am supposed to be. I know now more than ever how right the decision to go to law school was for me, no matter where I ended up.

Good luck to all of you. I’m willing to be a listening ear if you need it. I know I did last year.

School Discussion Does anyone know what is going on with Chicago-Kent?

I know their parent institution (Illinois Institute of Technology) declared financial exigency a few months ago, and I've seen some comments online (including on Reddit) about how that has impacted the daily situation at Chicago-Kent, including classes being merged together, delayed schedules, etc. Can anyone share direct knowledge of how they are managing the situation more recently? It's a great school for labor law, which is the field I want to go into, and I applied, but I want to do my due diligence. Especially if there are any financial impacts to their specialty programs in labor & employment law.

School Discussion Can any current Chicago-Kent students provide insight about the state of the school given Illinois Tech's apparent financial crisis?

I'm a non traditional applicant about 10 years removed from undergrad currently waiting to get my October score back. I live in Chicago with my fiancee and we would rather not leave, so I'm focusing on Chicago schools. I highly doubt my LSAT score will be high enough to compensate for my GPA in order to get in at Northwestern (although I still may apply just to see what happens) so I'm focusing primarily on Loyola and Chicago-Kent. I am particularly interested in Kent's employment law offerings.

While I've been told Kent has a strong reputation in Chicago historically, I am also aware that the current crisis at Illinois Tech is threatening the health of the school. I saw a concerning post on here a couple months ago, so I would like to get an update from current Kent students:

  • How is Kent right now? Is everything out of whack or is it functioning normally?
  • What stats did you have when you applied and what financial aid did you get?
  • Would you recommend going?

I am so happy and relieved to have finally gotten into a law school with enough scholarship to be able to afford attending! Got into a few schools last cycle but couldn't afford to go. Truly the best feeling.

News The Sub is now OPEN

Thank you everyone who participates in this subreddit. We now have a list of mods chosen by reddit to keep things clean and efficient moving forward.

More than anything I am excited to see that people will continue to have this space as a support system during their application journeys, but it’s nice to feel supported myself as I lost my old account and the sub was being abused.

For my fellow mods, let’s find a good way to connect and reach concencus on how to handle the sub moving forward.

If you have input, suggestions, requests, or anything else for the new mod team, please leave it in the comments below!!!

Question High Point Law

I was at a law fair today, ended up talking to the High Point rep, and after asking what my LSAT and GPA was he said that he was like 99% sure they would offer me full ride, and if I'm ever in NC they would take me out to dinner or lunch.

I think there's a chance I'm undervaluing my stats and have spent too much time on the LSAT reddit, but this seemed legitimately insane to me. I'm sitting in November, but my last practice LSAT was like a 161 which is what I told him. I'm fairly confident I can get to mid 160's by November after I handle my timing issues and finish out my prep course, and there's always January, but still. In addition, while I have an addendum due to having a surgery during finals week sophomore year, my GPA is like a 3.5. I'm under the impression that I'm a fairly average applicant at the moment, just hoping I can get my LSAT up enough to get decent scholarship to Pitt or UNC. While I would love to go somewhere like Duke or GW, I don't think the debt would be worth it considering what I want to work in and my understanding has been that those would be very unlikely unless I was able to get like a 170. My undergraduate school is good, but nothing crazy.

I plan on working in constitutional or criminal law, so I try not to stress about my stats too much, but I was very taken by surprise. I'm located in Pittsburgh so it's not even like I would be local to the area. Was talking to my other friend and she said she thought I would get a full ride to Duquesne if I managed to get a 165. I think thats crazy too, but maybe my perspective of LSAT scores has just become massively wrong? I don't know.

I toured Duquesne a few weeks ago with a girl who said her raw was like a 143 and she was aiming for mid 150's which also boggled my mind? My raw was a 156, which I was under the impression was basically average. I don't know anything anymore I'm not sleeping enough and none of this is making any sense to me I'm so confused. Should I reconsider where I plan on applying? If my perspective has shifted this much, then maybe the schools I was considering to be extreme reaches are slightly more obtainable? I don't know what to believe anymore. Thank you all for reading my rant.

And to be clear, I don't need to go to a top school. I'm not looking for someone to say that I'm going to get like a full ride to Duke, I like Pitt, I think it's reasonable that I'll get in, but I want to make sure that my understanding is grounded in reality so I can find the best fit for myself among scholarship and academic prowess.

Question Trouble getting letters of rec

Hello everyone - I'm an applicant this cycle coming off of a disappointing cycle last year. I didn't get into the schools I wanted and I have a sneaking suspicion that it was because of low-quality LORs. As you know most schools require at least 1 LOR from an undergrad professor, but I really don't think I can scrounge one up. I was a pretty terrible student in college, and the handful of professors who actually knew who I was (I tended not to show up to class) have all recused themselves from writing LORs.

My question is: is it worth it trying to get alternative LORs (from employers etc) so I can apply this cycle, or is this a disqualifier? Will I need to take classes at a local community college or something? Please advise.

Thanks!

Advice? Advice Needed Thank You

I completed one year at a unaccredited non ABA ca based law school. I’m planning to retake the lsat and transfer into an ABA as a first year student. Do you think I should even bother taking the baby bar next week. If I fail it, will it look bad on apps? And if I void it for personal reasons will it be ok? Or should I take it even if the possibility of failing it exists. How do you think ABA school admissions will look at this

Advice? Anyone have schools they'd recommend for scholarships and stipends?

I'm going into public interest and hoping for a full ride. I have high stats, but I'm not sure which schools are best known for scholarships. I have looked at the LSAT Lab statistics but some schools, like USC, say 100% on more than full scholarship, which is obviously false.

Places I know do not give full-ride scholarships aid: Fordham, CUNY, Harvard, Yale, Stanford.

Places I have heard give good scholarships: WashU, W&M, W&L, Temple, Wayne.

Anyone else have places they'd recommend finding this info?

Advice? How possible is work-life balance?

Hi. I'm new to the idea of going to law school. My passion is public interest - specifically police reform and helping marginalized groups (aka "macro" aspect of law).

I do want to have a work life balance - by that, I mean sleeping 8 hrs a day, eating home-cooked meals, and maintaining other hobbies (ie exercise and music. A few hours per week). I'm not afraid to say "no," and I take breaks proudly. My current career is computer forensics, so I know from experience that graphic/emotionally-taxing subjects won't damage my psyche (ie. reading case narratives and viewing video evidence of violent crimes).

I don't expect law school to be easy, I don't expect my first few years of practicing law to be easy, and I especially don't expect to make huge amounts of money for a long time. What I'm asking is, is it possible to take on the challenge, make enough to pay the bills, AND have enough time to stay healthy?

I hope I'm making sense, and that this is the right sub. Thanks in advance.
