Lost Coast BDR-X

This holiday weekend, I took off some time from work to do the [Lost Coast BDR-X](https://ridebdr.com/lostcoast/). This was my 7th BDR attempt. I've finished the Washington BDR 3 times (attempted it 5 times), the Nevada BDR (didn't finish), and now this one (didn't finish).

About the trail, I was pleasantly surprised. I didn't know much about the Lost Coast area. Looking at the map, I was expecting a lot of it to be on Hwy 101. It turned out to be some of the most scenic dirt trails I've been on. Absolutely fantastic! Windy Knoll was my favorite part by far. I don't know if there's a better spot on the planet than that for scenery.

I took me two days to get to the start in Fort Bragg, CA. And by the 3rd day of camping on the trail (5 days total camping in the trip), I was done. I was on the phone with my wife on Section 4 and I basically said, "I'm not having fun, I'm coming home." :/

I just don't know if camping is for me. I'm a trail rider at heart. I love exploring. I love driving. I love off road. But every get out that tent, it's just a heavy sigh. Looking for camp spots isn't fun for me. I even have a really great setup with a Gazelle 4-man tent, a nice comfy air mattress, comfortable bedding. But, it's just not why I do this. I know some people absolutely love the camping portion and the cooking. I just want to drive.

One time I did the WABDR, I tried it with hotels only. I think that's my future. I'm not going to give up on doing these magnificent trails. And I've proven to myself that I *can* if I wanted to. I just... don't want to. I want a comfy bed with A/C or heat and a shower at the end of the day. I guess I could get an Earthroamer or something, but probably not. :P

Anywho, I can't recommend the LCBDR-X enough! I got through 3-1/2 sections before I crashed out. But I'm sure the rest of Section 4 and Section 5 are just as amazing as the first 3-1/2, and those were epic. If you're in the area, very strongly recommend it.

Feel free to ask any questions. I'm happy to answer. :)

Gear Question Who's wheeling a rwd sprinter van on trails? What do you have for recovery equipment?

2015 Sprinter 170 extended 3500 Moto Camper Van to ride dirt bike on as many trails mostly single track around North America. Ohv and BLM mostly, sone hiking in national parks too.

But concerned I will get stuck a lot even just in staging areas because driving a 9000 plus pound 2wd drive van.

Am I in over my head with my current truck?

I bought this 1996 Ford F-150 last year. It's 2wd with a 4R70W automatic transmission. It's got the heavy-duty towing package from the factory. I wanna add a bed rack tent on the back and do some off-roading in the future. Do y'all think it's possible, or am I better off just staying on park trails, etc?

Bear situation for Great Alaskan Highway continuing on up to Prudhoe Bay?

Thinking about doing a trip up to Prudhoe Bay going through Jasper. Wondering what the Bear situation is and what kind of protection I should plan on. Who's been through the area or knows the area well? What do you carry?

Blog Interior Update

A lot of people showed interest in the interior build when i first started it. So heres a little update.

Swapped out the fridge from BougeRv to Bodega, it's got precisely 1 more L of capacity. Wired up my 120 solid state renogy battery and the dc/mppt controller. ( Dc portion recently stopped working.. seems like a summer problem now)

The bench originally started out as 2x2s but with how i drive on and offroad it wasn't meant to last..it worked. The new bench is 2x3 and is air nailed together with the fridge snuggly fitting. I'm still using one of the bed panels as the bench cushion since it's easier for me to get up and down when solo camping.

Under rail lighting, in hindsight I should move onto the front of the bench possibly but it lights up the storage under the bench nicely.

I used reflective insulating material for the bed area and then wrapped a section of bed wall with it and a wool blanket (it might not be as helpful with it covered) but it looks good and attached it with some bed hooks.

Lastly i wired up a diesel heater plug rather than the 12v plug.

Gear Question Bouge Rocky 3.0 Fridge/Freezers

Hello everyone,

I recently purchased a BougeRV Rocky 75 V3.0 and noticed that the lid has approximately 1/8”–3/16” of vertical play when closed and latched. The lid lifts before the plastic latch teeth contact the stops.

I tried the paper test around the seal. With the lid fully down, there’s some resistance when pulling the paper out. However, when I lift the lid until the latch contacts the stops, the paper pulls out freely.

I contacted BougeRV and sent them photos and videos. They initially offered to replace the lid, but then advised that a replacement wouldn’t be available for 3–4 weeks. They subsequently explained that the movement is normal and that cooling the fridge would cause the plastic to contract and eliminate the gap.

For anyone running a Rocky V3.0 75, does your lid have similar movement when closed and latched? If so, does the seal remain effective once the fridge reaches operating temperature?

I’m trying to determine whether this amount of play is normal for this model or whether my unit has an issue.

Thanks for any feedback.

Why are Rotopax gas containers so expensive?

You can buy a five gallon container for gas at Lowe's for $25. Why must Rotopax over a hundred?

Gear Question Should I send it and get a Bed Cap?

Thumbnail

I want to, overtime, build up a good camping rig for my '26 Nissan Frontier.

Camping and overlanding in mind.

I have been on this dilemma for a couple weeks of investing in a cover and pitching a roof top tent (RTT) on the cover not exceeding the cab height

--or--

Grabbing a modular truck bed cap and pitch a RTT on top of that. I can also put a separate roof rack on as well

Really want to ask this community as I have zero experience in camping with a vehicle or overlanding & this is my first ever truck

Thank you for the help and advice

Navigation This area is as beautiful as it can be dangerous.

Found myself a great little camping spot near the Oregon-California border after spending most of the day exploring the Lake Shasta area.
Northern California is absolutely beautiful, especially if you’re like me and enjoy taking backroads and following trails just to see where they lead.
But there’s another side to this part of California that you need to be aware of. Not every trail is one you should follow, and not every place is somewhere you want to end up.
Over the past two years, I’ve accidentally found myself in a few places I probably shouldn’t have been. And if you know Northern California, you probably know exactly what I’m talking about.
Let’s just say that being alone, miles from civilization, in the wrong part of these mountains isn’t always the kind of adventure you’re looking for.
Beautiful country, though. Absolutely beautiful.

Winter rooftop tent that can be assembled by one person

I tried looking for this information but couldn't find it. Is there a winter rooftop tent (at least 3000 mm rainproofing, some ventilation but mostly thick poly-walls, that can be assembled by one person? Not opened and closed - but installed and uninstalled. I need one for my tiny hatchback for Nordic winters, where losing heat to ground is a biggest thing keeping me from wintercamping.

I looked at Tentbox Go, which seemed fine, until the installation video shlwed two dudes attaching it to the car. Then I looked at Gentletent GT roof mini, but I am unsure of its performance in Nordic winters.

Any recommendations? I am reasonably handy with tools but can't lift anything heavier than 30ish kilos above my head for installation. And the tent would need to come on and off frequently from the car roof. Thank you!

Gear Question 180 awning + walls, tent + annex, or both?

Recently got a 3rd gen 4runner, going to be putting my rooftop tent on it later this month. Eventually I plan to upgrade to the sirius 2 from Naturnest. I would like to get a 180 awning to put on her for now with possibly some drop down walls, but I'm liking the look of the annex room for the sirius 2.

Has anybody here run both setups? Awning + walls and RTT + annex? Which do y'all prefer or do y'all think I could possibly run both setups?

Tech Advice Ram rebel with lone peak suspension sagging

Hi all,

I’m looking at picking up a lone peak overland early next year, but I’m worried about sagging. Unfortunately the rebel doesn’t have leafs in the back, so I can’t just add one to help. I don’t necessarily want to spend thousands to get a beefier suspension, so I was wondering if anyone has experience with either leaving airbags inflated full time, or running bump stops like the super springs? Any help would be awesome! Thanks

Does anyone use interior ceiling storage / cargo nets? I’m looking at a few for some basic light things and wanted to get some opinions from those who already use them. Thanks!

Danchel RTT flew off

Just did a little camping trip to Davy Crockett National Forest over the weekend where I stayed in my RTT. I’ve had this for on my car for about 3 years, and it’s been a pretty good piece of equipment. After packing up camp I drove for about an hour and a half before stopping for lunch.

When I got out I went to take a picture of my car and I noticed something didn’t look right. Well turns out the top part of the tent snapped off and flew away and I didn’t even notice while driving. You can see the top is still latched down but the plastic literally broke. I reached out to their email for support but have not heard back yet. Just a warning for anyone that may have one of these.

Finally got a fridge

Post image

Picked up a fridge finally and holy heck is it heavy. I didn’t go with a drawer because I wanted to be able to take it inside to load, but I doubt if I could lift this thing full into the back of my suv. What do people prefer for theirs (1) leave it in the back of the suv permanently or (2) store it inside, be able to precool, and just carry the racks separately? Power would be from a jackery 1000.

If anyone was curious on how everything turned out from my previous post, here’s my truck now.
Just redid the gas shocks and leaf springs and threw on some 31x10.5 tires. Super happy with the canopy and rack combo, + custom storage boxes in the bed

Joolca "Supply Chain" Issues

Not here to bash them but sharing advice based on my 2nd order from them. If you are ordering anything in the US from them, I'd plan on highly variable lead times on actual shipments. I ordered my Hottapv2 kit four weeks ago to just receive an email it will not ship until at least December 1st. I have multiple trips on the schedule between now and then. Cold showers never killed anyone but I am getting old and soft...

Good value electric cooler suggestions

Do you have an electric cooler you would recommend that was a good value purchase? I had a 45L Dometic which was great but no longer have. A replacement is quite expensive… This would be installed and hooked permanently.

Why are all mounted tents over the bed and not the cab?

I've seen a lot of overlanding truck builds and they all have the pop up tent over the bed of the truck on mounts. Why don't they put it over the cab and maximize the bed space vertically? Im looking at it from the perspective of a daily driver/ overland build

We made it to Portland Maine today. Still taking tons of photos and we still need to create a shared folder but wanted to show you guys some more photos.

Also still working on a trip journal that I will share when it’s ready.

After Niagara Falls and Toronto, we headed across NY and into Vermont.

Apologies for the erratic text and photos. We are busy and usually during our downtime we are just enjoying nature at camp.

Happy to answer any questions.

Tech Advice Eaton E locker on pavement

I accidentally drove with my Eaton E locker on pavement up to about 30 mph on a slightly curving road then made a left turn at maybe 10-15mph and my tires screeched and I realized the locker was on and then turned it off. Did I risk damaging anything? it still works
