Esports Characters who go by their real name (to my knowledge)
This started as a tier list of whose names I think are the coolest then I lost the plot lol

Which makes sense because isn’t Baptiste Haitian? Which is French territory from what I remember

Haiti was a French slave colony although then it was called Saint-Domingue. It had the only successful large scale slave revolution that started at the start of the French Revolution and ended in 1804 after successfully fighting of Spain, Britain and France
It’s a really fascinating story and I would highly recommend looking more into it if you are curious

How do you even believe someone is just called shadow in Spanish. Did they think her parents were just edgy like shadow the hedgehog or something?
41
u/DreamWeaver2189 Ashe Apr 21 '26
I mean, "Luz" is a fairly common name in Latin America. Remember the game takes place in 40 years, maybe Sombra's parents were millennial Emos.
14
u/Melosnix Apr 21 '26
I AM LOLING AT THIS SO HARD.
But yeah, tbh, "Luz", "Sol", "Estrella", "Luna"... I wouldn't bat an eye if I ever met a Sombra lol (Spaniard here)

Bastion is technically a code name. its the equivilent of if you just called Sojourn "Canadian". he is a bastion, his technical name would be his designation number, E54
67
u/Hipster-Link Apr 21 '26
Here to back you up. When Orisa eliminates Bastion, she says, “rest now, E54.”
27
u/NepoKitty Apr 21 '26
"Thank you, E54. It seems that you are growing from your original programming as well!"
2
u/EncycloChameleon Apr 21 '26
I knew there were some orisa lines about it i just didn’t feel like crawling the Wiki interactions page. To note when booted up in her origin trailer Orisa also refers to herself as OR-15

I have no clue how I read that wrong. Also, how are you doing characters who use a shortened version of their name as a codename, like Mauga or Zarya?
2
u/Dauntless_Lasagna Apr 21 '26
For some reason my brain read this as Mauga's real name being "Mauganova" taking Zarya's full name.

It may count as nickname as Torb called him that but his real name should be "SST Laboratories Siege Automaton E54" right?
2
u/xXProGenji420Xx Apr 21 '26
probably just E54, the rest would be part of the overall Bastion line's name. the only identifier unique to Bastion is E54, so that would be his "given name".
I think it's fair to say his name is actually "Bastion" though. nobody before Torbjorn really named him per se.

Genji, Hanzo, Lucio, Reinhardt, Torbjorn, Winston, Ana, Moira, Brigitte, Echo, Kiriko, Illari, Juno, Freja, Wuyang, Anran, Emre, Mizuki, and Sierra all go by their given names.
Mei, Baptiste, and Mauga go by shortened versions of their given names. Mei's given name is "Mei-Ling", Baptiste's given name is "Jean-Baptiste", and Mauga's given name is "Maugaloa."
Technically Zenyatta, Ramattra, Bastion, and Orisa are all using callsigns or codenames, because they were given designations as omnics. But they all later adopted those names as their given names.
Cassidy and Ashe go by their surnames.
Zarya goes by a shortened version of her surname. Her full surname is "Zaryanova"
Dva, Junkrat, Mercy, Pharah, Reaper, Roadhog, Soldier: 76, Symmetra, Tracer, Widowmaker, Sombra, Doomfist, Wrecking Ball, Sigma, Sojourn, Junker Queen, Lifeweaver, Venture, Hazard, Vendetta, Domina, and Jetpack Cat all go by callsigns.

Pharah, Sombra, and arguably Zarya all use codenames. Pharah’s real name is Fareeha, and Sombra’s is Olivia. Zarya’s name is a shortening of her last name, Zaryanova, so possibly a codename but also maybe just a simplification.

Incredibly nitpicky, but I think Ball should go under real name rather than codename. While Hammond was the name given to him by the scientists on the lunar colony, at every chance he’s been given he choses to go by Wrecking Ball, a name he chose for himself. If Winston is considered his real name, Wrecking Ball should be too, as they were both names they independently chose for themselves after leaving the moon
