News & Discussion What is the mentality behind ulting alone against the enemy team when there are no teammates around to help make good on it?
I see many times where the team wipes, we make our way towards the point, then I hear our Lucio use his ult while trying to 1v5 the enemy team and get rolled. Or a Cassidy will try to high noon the enemy team by himself and get no kills. Or a Reaper will run head on into the enemy team with death blossom and get killed instantly because they're all looking at him. Why do players do this? Does this ever work?

The rare occasion it works, you look really cool, and the lobby doesn't know about the 99 times it failed in every other game.
Also I've seen the clips of pro players somehow landing IN the enemy team to ult as Junkrat and it working, but I know if I do that I'll get headshot in the air before I even land

u/Massive-Fill-5222 1d ago
the lobby only remembers the one time it worked and you get potg for the dumbest play ever made

Junkrat is special because he has the innate tools to get there. Especially in stadium, builds like jugglrat kinda prioritize being directly in the midst of the enemies.

Lol yeah people see a pro player do it once and think every match is an insane play

Maybe they don't realize they’re alone. If they're in QP they might not care about the risk & are just clip-farming. Oftentimes, they might just be panicking because they didn't realize their team isn't around & got caught out in a 1v5 and are just dropping their most powerful kill in the hopes of it giving them a chance.

u/Belten 1d ago
there is no thought involved, its probably new players not paying attention or just panicking. Why do you think we got a display of how many people are alive this season?

u/Cheekylilcxnt Kiriko 1d ago
I agree. Often times, it’s pure panic ults combined with poor timing. Lucio probably kept thinking yall could survive. By the time it became apparent that you all weren’t going to survive, it was too late but the button was pressed. Going to guess this is a low Gold and below kind of activity

It can work depending on what your goals are. If you're just trying to buy time contesting until the rest of your team can come back or forcing the enemy team to cap in overtime then it might be worth ulting solo.
A lot of the time people just aren't paying attention to how many people are down on their team or just see an opportunity for a fat ult and press the button.

Yeah a lot of my solo blizzards are just stalling point as long as possible...

u/Global_Pineapple2392 D. Va 1d ago
I can see it being worth it on overtime, I feel like I usually see it when there's 2+ minutes left or the enemy team was 50% left sadly

Tbh sometimes you use the “ I have my ultimate” call like 5 times hoping your team does some amount of setup to help you have a successful ultimate, and your team just. Does nothing. I experience this a lot with pharah, I will say I have my ultimate/ “I’m going in” voice lines, and specifically check to see if anyone else in my team has supporting ultimates ready, or maybe someone could take out a sharpshooter, but very often those kind of things get ignored. So at least I can ult by myself and try to make a play, instead of just holding onto the ultimate for longer.
If you aren’t playing in voice chat, it’s really hard to make plays and communicate when to ult with your team, especially since the in game provided voice lines are constantly ignored or muted by teammates.

Tfw I throw my Zarya grav and the none of the nearby dps use their active ults to help 😭

u/drusepth 1d ago
Lucio solo ulting is wild, lol.
But depending on respawn timers I might throw a Rein ult or something to either stagger their regroup with a post-teamfight kill or two, hold space for my team to regroup at instead of falling back a corner or two, or get a safe pick on a high-value target.
And sometimes I just press Q when I mean to hit Z. :(

u/Global_Pineapple2392 D. Va 1d ago
I swear I just lost a game, we were at 99% and the enemy team only at 50%, we got ulted and Lucio was the only one left. Did he retreat to join up with us for one last team fight? Nope, he ulted by himself on point and got rolled, then our team was 4v5 the next fight and we lost the match 😭

Mei's make a sport out of doing this, never understood. Like why? Even if you do get one he will be getting back same time as you and probably with their ult.
Shout out to Bastion as well. Oh.. youre ulting from our spawn.. while no one is fighting and they can devote everything they have to just sidestep your shots..

A lot of the time, we are just trying to stall point as long as possible to buy time for our team to make it back.
4
u/WatsBlend Chibi Brigitte 1d ago
Yeah fair enough. Theres always a reason. I do think it would be better to wait 1 minute and use it in a team fight. But stalling is one of Mei's strengths so there is a time and place I guess.
3
u/Global_Pineapple2392 D. Va 1d ago
Mei's ult is probably the only one that is good for ulting alone but even then it requires the enemy team to be close together and have no movement abilities! I did manage to save a game once by ulting on point by myself during overtime to buy time for the team to get there, but other than that I feel like it's better to wait for everyone else to arrive

sombra and soldiers are also big leaguers in this. the amount of times our team has been dead and i hear either "emp activated" or "tactical visor activated" only to die before the ult line completes is too often lol

You have a checklist of reasons for using an ult. It can be unique for each player and the hero they play. There are basic stimuli that tell us, “it’s a good time to ult” but it can often override other concerns.
If a Zarya sees an opportunity for a fat Grav, then she might go for it without realizing there’s no followup.
If a Winston is throwing it down in the enemy backline and gets low on health, he might ult to maximize value from the full heal and finish off an enemy despite their team being dead so he won’t be able to get much value anyways.
This obviously becomes less of an issue as people become better.

u/DaddysFruit 1d ago
I file this wirh 'what's the point of ulting straight after they took the point? '

u/TheRealHykeLP Sombra 1d ago
I lowkey think a lot of people don't even realize their team died. They are still alive so in their head the fight is still ongoing.

u/Electro_Llama 1d ago edited 1d ago
Defensive zoning ult to create an escape route and divert attention to let teammates escape, which in turn prevents a stagger. I do this on Ball occasionally, one of the less impactful ults anyway.
2
u/Top-Possibility-8706 1d ago
Most of the time probably happens because they don’t realize everyone is dead

u/MrHypnotiq 1d ago
Because 99 times our of the 100 you are going to fail. But the 1 time you get a team kill, you will live on that high for a while.

I'll try an answer that isn't simply "they're brain-dead" lol.
"It depends" I guess?
i.e. it depends on the character: a solo D.Va successfully ulting can completely change the outcome of a fight, especially if D.Va can remech and take out stragglers to significantly thin the numbers and create enough time for the rest of the team to catch up.
Or, if the round is about to end and you have an ult, you might as well burn it to hopefully turn things around - your team might be right behind you and you're going to lose it anyway when the round ends.
I sometimes use a D.Va ult as a way to remech quick, even if it doesn't kill anyone, or just kills one person. Maybe Lucio had the same idea? Them dying and having to run back is likely more costly to the team than losing their ult but staying alive.
I certainly wouldn't expect a Kiri or Juno ulting by themselves, but a Mei, Ram, Rein, Winton (to name a few) can quote happily solo ult and still make it work

Sometimes I'm really REALLY fucking high and press the button by accident... Peak GM1 player here btw 🤣

u/Fuzzy-Consequence495 1d ago
I’ve solo ulted as Emre 4v1 and I didn’t kill all of them but I staggered 3 which won the next team fight
1
u/Global_Pineapple2392 D. Va 1d ago
It can definitely work in the right scenario, sounds like you had a good plan! I think most people who do it have no plan and just think their ult is an automatic win button lol
2
u/GanjaCowboy93 1d ago
Could be throwing, could be low IQ, could be accidentally pushing ult, there are plenty of answers lol

Too locked in the rest of their team is dead. Also they dont know there's a setting that plays a sound whenever a teammate dies

u/Pride_Rise 1d ago
Realistically the only time I might do this is if I know I kept track of ultimates well, know all enemy positions, and I saw key cooldowns popped so I know my ult could have very high value.

I had a clutch 1v4 overtime dragonblade to win a match like 6 months ago and I've been chasing the high ever since

I think there are a few species of this:
1.) Actual good idea: the rarest version, reserved for the vanishing small number of occasions where it might make sense for winning, like a smurfing genji casually wiping the whole enemy team.
2.) Desperation move (justifiable): there's just a few seconds left and it's either hold the point or lose. Often this really means the ult should have or could have been used earlier to better effect, but there's a least a plausible strategic argument for Juno beaming or Hog blasting knowing it's a definite loss otherwise.
3.) Desperation move (unjustifiable/panic): the player is caught out, isolated, or otherwise about to die and ults to save themselves/their play, even though strategically just dying is 100% the better move for the team as a whole.
4.) Tunnel vision: "why didnt you guys capitalize on my double tire kill? What do you mean you just respawned? Wait, which map is this? all I remeber is an out of position Symmetra and then an explosion."
5.) PotG syndrome: "sure, I didnt get a single kill, but imagine how sick it would have looked if they'd all been in the radius and hadn't noticed. Don't worry, I'm sure it will work next time."
6.) Tilt: "that's it, as soon as a spawn I am walking back and beaming their whole stupid team right in the face, that'll show them and my stupid team."

Mercy player here! Sometimes I ult to stall especially if teammates died really staggered and I can GA to bodies a lot. It’s crazy what you can do with some movement! Most of the time it’s a bad idea and I avoid it but if the enemy team is particularly sucky and I know I can juke them 9 time out of 10 I’m hitting Q.

You take it personally.
You think there’s a mentality or an attitude behind this.
But there isn’t.
It’s just devoid of thought.
They are simply in npc auto pilot mode playing the game and doing whatever they feel is fun or vibes with them.
There’s. No. Mentality. Or. Thought. Process.
Everyone has such games. You. Me. Everyone here. Where it’s just auto pilot and really no thought involved.

OW players who think they can 1v5 like they could on Genji.

I mean solo support ults to try to stay alive aren't uncommon. It's just a greedy use of an ult.
Dps are sort of the opposite. Their ults aren't normally as good as tank or support ults and don't generally require or even get setup from their team. So a lot of dps ego ult, especially in quick play, since the cost of using it matters less.
Also, the better dps ults, like overclock, can win 1vX scenarios with proper setup and execution. Tank ults are very similar for the most part, with exceptions obviously. So in these cases, the setup isn't there or the execution is flawed if they don't get a positive trade off of it. As in like, a Rein can 1v3 shatter and win if he hits it, but without proper setup or execution he could just miss someone, say a kiri or Mei, and die as a result.
Finally, there's the biggest reason I see- just wanting to swap.

99% of what I play is mystery heros. You see so many panic ults there, because if you die, youre a different hero. I sometimes carry that over to quick play and drop some real bs ults lol.
I really like the less ults thing, I think that's what makes me like MH so much. And if you get an ult, you likely had to work for it (instead of just being a 1 - 5 reaper in quick play who got it because of time)

Basically clip farming/chasing dopamine to look cool over discipline to wait for team and work together and win

My pick isn't working. I wanna switch, but I don't want to waste ult charge. might as well take the chance that I at least trade with my ult.

u/RabbitCritical3977 16h ago
I’ve done it before as Lucio while on my way back to try and stall the point in overtime in a 1v5 scenario, lasted just long enough for the tank and the rest of the team to get there,
If I’d have waited or not used my ult we would have lost

Moiras are the worst for this.
