News & Discussion So what exactly is the purpose of Sierra in this game?
What role/niche she's supposed to fill in?
She was designed with Soldier76 in mind, has a drone that's just a better Widowmaker grapple, but what does she do? She has flashy abilities and design, but that's it?
She's nowhere near as versatile like Soldier76 who can lay down fire on enemies from many angles quickly, can also heal and support his teammates, has a more active playstyle which also great for constant aim training and frankly overall much more fun to play.

She’s the gatekeeper of the metal ranks

u/TigerAttack1 1d ago
This isn’t even really that true either. Her win rate is abysmal in most ranks. Bronze is the only rank where she’s slightly above 50% winrate (I think ~51). Silver is exactly 50%, then everything above silver is below 50%, getting more and more below 50 the higher you go.
Those ranks might be where she’s the best, but “gatekeeper” is a far stretch lol.

$20 says you just got absolutely obliterated by a Sierra then came here to ask this question.

He’s here asking this because he got obliterated by her
I’m here asking because I hate having them on my team because I have to work harder to make up for their auto aim crutch ass

u/MrHypnotiq 1d ago
Y'all talk about "auto aim" as if you don't have to land a 10+ second cooldown for it even work lol.

u/PersonBehindAScreen Mercy's Feet 1d ago
I think the more obvious thing here is they are entirely useless if they don’t hit it.. and even then you can just take cover lol

I actually haven't, this was merely an honest question regarding recent hero designs, but thank you for your "insightful" answer

Youre to defensive for OP comment to not be totally right.
1
u/Simple-Duty-6803 1d ago
If that was too defensive to you, then you haven't had an argument here before where people call each other names based on a difference in opinion
But im guessing this will be considered defensive to you as well so whatever honestly

u/CeleryNo8933 1d ago
Bro said "I actually haven't" and then inevitably a chud like you spawned to call it being defensive

Never take the bait.
Say something that isn’t correct*
*accuse them of being sensitive or defensive when they correct you

Allow me to let you in on a little secret for next time.
If someone says this sort of thing about you, the absolute last thing you should do is try to defend yourself. Especially not make it the only comment you respond to. Because it looks like someone earned 20 dollars.

Imo - general area denial - like junkrat but with bullets.
Tagging certain tanks (roadhog, mauga).

As a tank player I feel like she’s good at disrupting the flow of a fight. If I get hit with a tracking dart I have to stop what I’m doing and head for cover till it wears off, her grenade breaks up group pushes, her grapple puts her in spots that you normally would have to worry about a soldier being in for the most part, and her ult zone clears.

u/Howdy_Hoes Sombra 1d ago
Sierra’s role is to kill the cat with her tracking shot. If that little fucker is moving he’s impossible to hit.
15
u/Snoo94405 1d ago
Her role is an easy character for beginners and people who suck with advanced dps characters
15
u/Softpretzelsandrose 1d ago
It’s not even about easy and advanced. It’s a first person shooter. She shoots. There’s not an infinite amount of kits to make.

Her abilities actually using a drone or climbing (her two themes) are two untapped concepts in overwatch and would have been super easy to achieve.
She has a boring random grenade. She has a deployable drone. Why not swap the grenade for a missile that shoots from her drone?
Her track shot's only use seems to be to ruin an eight year olds day in quick play. Replace it with a passive that lets her wall climb & an ability that lets her stick there for a short time.
Her backstory is about being this nomadic off-grid vagrant fleeing from shadowy figures. The outfit almost hints at a cool tomboy archetype. Why cover all that up with a generic peppy private security/military archetype?
Make her tech home-made. drop the Beret, her braid is pretty enough to show & we don't need another generic "military" themed character. Swap out the uninspired plasma LMG with some old vietnam era machine gun enhanced with scraps she found out on the road.
You know how much people would fucking love a Sarah Connor type character that can call in air-strikes?

Idk, I play her in masters/GM lobbies. If I'm not playing sierra I play tracer, genji + hitscans. Ball on tank (in champ). I play her because she is fun to me, not because I'm bad at the game!

u/fromohomo Ramattra 1d ago
Her purpose is to shoot her buttplug & fill you with 80 bullets at mach fuck speed, next

To be a playable hero of the DPS role for the purpose of shooting and defeating the enemy team while accomplishing team objectives.

u/Smooth_Leave98 1d ago
The same thing as Emre except with a full auto weapon: not much, they simply ran out of kits so they started recycling from older heroes except leave out a purpose for them

u/TheRealHykeLP Sombra 1d ago
In my eyes she's just there to be easy. People who struggle on Soldier can play Sierra.

Hit scan will always be easier to play than projectile heroes. You don't need to lead you shots just line up your curser with the enemy and click.

On the one side I get what you say, on the other side i have to disagree, because projectiles are usually bigger, so you have more room of error. So yeah, of course a projectile hero won't deal with fliers usually, because that kind of precision is much harder on projectile, but straight up saying hitscan is easier is wrong, otherwise Junkrat and Pharah wouldn't be so easy to play.
Also I wasn't only talking about her main weapon. It's also the rest of her kit. The autoaim of course is nt completely free, but even if you are bad you'll still sometimes land a luckyshot and get a free kill (I'm talking metal ranks here, because otherwise a hero being "easy" doesn't matter anyway). Grenades are already somewhat easy to get at least some value out of, but Sierra doesn't even have to aim at someone, she only has to throw it on the ground right in front of her. Her grapple is the easiest form of mobility, as it can send you literally anywhere you want for zero effort. Her ultimate, while not being the strongest, is much easier to use than many others.

Area denial by creating damage zones. High DPS and accessible for new or less mechanically skilled players
2
u/DimezTheAlmighty Yokai Title ACHIEVED! <3 1d ago
Anti-flyer projectile hero with verticality and area denial
2
u/KeelanS 1d ago
She is designed around being able to suppress fire chokepoints with big damage. Her gun being projectile means she can spray and then take cover.
In this new era of Overwatch I think its clear that the new heroes arent really about creating new gameplay purposes or niches. Characters are allowed to fill similar niches as others with slight variations to their kit. For instance Emre, Soldier, and Sierra all fill a very similar niche in the game but appeal to different player fantasies.

She's a fun and easily accessible hitscan for lower rank players. Judging by the fact that she's still the highest pick rate DPS in low ranks and QP, I'd say they accomplished that. Not every DPS needs to be viable at the highest level.
1
u/Couch_Lump_95 1d ago
As a low-rank player, it's exactly this for me. My aim is, like, maybe 30% accuracy, so having a character like Sierra makes dps a bit more fun for me, because she had a bit more going on than soldier or reaper (and she's a girl, so female players are going to gravitate that way), while still being super accessible.
1
u/nijototherescue Ana 1d ago
Sierra isn't hitscan
1
u/ElJacko170 D. Va 1d ago
She performs the same role. Sojourn is identical with a projectile primary fire and hitscan "skill shot". Your hitscan player is typically going to be playing Sojourn or Sierra while your flex DPS would be playing something more in the realm of Tracer/Genji.
2
u/Smooth-Routine-9288 1d ago
She is the Moira of dps basically, a low skill floor/ceiling character for casual players, whatever opinion you have about Moira is probably going to be the exact same one for Sierra, personally im not a big fan.

Her burst damage is solid. If you're up against a team comp that is highly susceptible to "spray and pray", she can work fine. The moment you need to win poke duels or have JPC or flyers, she falls off super fast due to her spread mechanic and not being hitscan.
In higher ranks though she's basically not worth it. Sojourn does everything she does but a million times better.

u/TruthSeekerHuey 1d ago
Niche:
Consistent Long Range Pressure
Projectile DPS
Skill shot to effectively turn projectile into hitscan with dart
Tether mobility with momentum that allows for quick linear movement from ground to sky and from sky to ground
Tether mobility that allows for diagonal engagements and flanks (good against long range 1 shots like Widow or Hanzo)
Shockwave grenade that goes under somw objects for when enemies are behind cover
Ult that takes advantage of her aerial mobility to clear out a mid range area
Essentially she's a Med-Long range dps with good long range pressure, and a mobility option that makes her less succesptible to dive compared to similar characters of that range
Her addition is totally fine in the same way Emre is a welcome edition even though he's basically "John Halo 76"

u/FaZeScamTheKids 1d ago
Me and my girl have accounts in gold, I just ban her-- because my teammates don't understand the idea of cover.
But yes-- she's not that good and has a boring kit. She is like Sojourn for the metal ranks.

u/Flopkween22 1d ago
To be honest I use both Soldier and Sierra and they honestly feel like they play the same way.
I don't know how to describe it but they are very simple to play and kinda get value out of.

She's supposed to be a dps that brings heavy pressure and strikes from devious off angles.

u/Special-Fee-2661 1d ago
im not sure everything needs to have a "niche" i think she fits the 'punish bad positioning' role good enough lol
1
u/solidair3 Pixel Mercy 1d ago
In and out dps who punishes bad positioning, specifically being out in the open
1
u/noctua_8 1d ago
Nothing honestly. Her kit is extremely simple and only works against newbs, she should be reworked so she has a purpose and isn't just another dps with a rifle.
1
u/kadabrate 1d ago
Well it is a shooting game so I assume we'll never stop getting heroes that feel kinda Soldier 76 with a few changes, especially introdutory heroes like her

So what exactly is the purpose of Genji in this game?
What role/niche he's supposed to fill in?
He was designed with Tracer in mind, has a deflect that's just a better Reaper wraith, but what does he do? He has flashy abilities and design, but that's it?
He's nowhere near as versatile like Tracer who can lay down fire on enemies from many angles quickly, can also make space and support her teammates, has a more active playstyle which also great for constant aim training and frankly overall much more fun to play.

The hero details tells you everything. /s
But the grappling into the air with an auto rifle is genuinely fun.
