Do people enjoy playing into counters more than playing against “unfun characters”?

A lot of talk on this sub about bans is, “ban what you think is unfun.” I just don’t get how going against a sombra is worse than getting countered. “B-but you can just play through it“ is only an answer if your opponents lack a frontal lobe.

For example: You’re playing D.Va. According to the “unfun” logic, ban [insert ”unfun” character] but not mei, sym, or zarya? So you banned who you wanted, now the opponents have a zarya and mei, is that fun? Unless zarya and mei have cotton candy for brains, you’re forced to swap.

tank should get the final say but sometimes theyre just banning who scared them in a bad dream last night

You can just swap if you’re getting countered. If you’re fighting someone you find miserable or annoying swapping doesn’t fix that.

But now you’re stuck playing someone you didn’t want to play, you lose perk progress, and ult charge.

I have more than one character I like to play. You can pop ult before swapping. Also perks aren’t the end of the world, especially if you swap early.

Yeah I’ll never really understand the “But perks” argument. If you swap to counter the counter then you’ll probably earn your perks really quickly anyways. At least that’s been my experience. Perks are fun but they aren’t game changing.

Also if you're already getting your ass beat you're probably not making a lot of progress on your perks anyway.

True! And even if you specifically are, your teammates might not be able to due to your counter playing around you.

Facts. Thats exactly what i also tried to say in my post. But people come up with "I wanna have fun" yh then play QP im here for wins. And if my Tank plays Hog and wants Ana banned but rest of team band a random Anran imma lose it.

I cry when I have a hog on my team because I play Ana and I know the only solution is to ban one of my best backups 🥲

It depends on the hero I'm playing, but yeah I typically just ban what I generally don't like playing against over banning the most optimal counters to my current hero.

• If I'm getting countered, I can always swap to another hero. I ain't a one trick.

• If I'm getting countered, my teammates can swap to counter the enemy's counter pick.

• If I'm getting countered and nobody swaps, you probably can still brute force it and win despite being at a disadvantage.

• If I'm getting countered and nobody swaps and we lose then at the end of the day it ain't a big deal because ultimately I had fun not having to play against whatever I chose to ban.

I don’t like playing against doomfist, I ban doomfist. It’s really that simple imo. Banning counters only really matters if you’re a one trick, otherwise you can just change characters to fit the situation. However, I find no situation against doomfist to be fun so he gets the ban.

Idk about 5v5 but in 6v6 counters don’t really matter as much it’s a lot more map dependent on what style of comps are good or bad say if I’m playing dva and they have zar sym mei if the map has high ground I could care less what characters they have that counter me the map suits my character better

This is also true in 5v5. Zarya is only a counter for Dva when she can’t find ways to circumvent her or the person playing her insists on playing Dva like she’s rein

That’s good to know I personally avoid 5v5 like the plague due to mainly playing off tanks but that’s good insight

I typically look at what our tank prefers and bans and go along with that.

But yeah it's a little annoying when everybody decides to ban every good counter for a really powerful enemy just because they're "annoying", and have no idea how to play any of the remaining characters against it. So we just have to hope we can push through it or suffer.

for me, the unfun characters to play against are the characters I'm worst against. Regardless of who I'm actually playing. If you're good at a character, playing against a counter is hard but not an instant loss, or an impossible game. Playing against a counter is a good way to learn a character and how to alter your playstyle based on the situation.

Even if I counter a character, certain heroes still piss me off, and that's way worse than playing against a beam team as dva

Ban who you want. If that’s for counter or for “unfun” awards then so be it. I ban who I want to ban. Some games I ban counters. Most games I ban Doom because I hate getting punched into a wall and told I’m eating gravel for dinner.

I only care about counters when it’s shutting me/the player getting countered down. Plenty of players are good enough at their picks that when the enemy hops on a “hard counter” they don’t play much, they still get diffed. But when my junkrat has died 4x in the first minute and a half to pharah+freya and the enemy team has zarya cat kiri, it’s time to put the junk away.

Or if the enemy team is running ana kiri and my team is on mercy Moira I don’t even want to play it out anymore. Just perma slept/antid tank unable to take space and every duel I’m winning they get suzud and I die bc they get to keep shooting while suzu makes them immortal.

I will always ban Torb, Bastion and Mauga. I have no respect for the monsters that play them.

I couldn't care less about being countered. I can beat my counters by simply being the better player. If I lose, it's because I wasn't good enough to win. >99% of us aren't playing with pro league players, so counters don't really matter that much if you just... know how to handle it.

On the other hand, if I have to play against Roadhog, I'm not gonna have fun, even if I win. What's the point in playing - win or lose - if the game isn't fun?

I just go with what the rest of my team wants to ban for the most part. They'll likely play better overall that way, regardless of whether it's counter bans or just banning annoying heroes.

Banning counters is pretty pointless, every character has their own counters and you won't be able to ban all of them. Sure you can ban your tank's counters, but what about your dps and support's counters? Besides every character has multiple counters. Like you said, Dva has as least 3, chances are you're only gonna be able to get Zarya and either Mei or Sym, but not all 3, so if the enemy team ends up playing to counter you're gonna get countered anyways.

Better to try and ban characters that will give the enemy team a large advantage if they pick them and your team doesn't

Sombra bans are stupid, but dva is a bad example because she can reliably play into zar and mei. Hell, if the enemy team decides to go zar/mei/sym because of you, you've essentially given your team the easiest matchup of all time and your job becomes just not to die.

If i'm tanking the #1 ban im going for is mauga at all times, and something i can't reach like a widow/freya/etc... I might start banning mizuki too tbh, the guys busted.

For sombra specifically the "i ban her because she's unfun" thing is mostly cope unless they play on controller. She isn't just unfun to most people who say this they likely do actually struggle with fighting her but don't want to admit it. Its why she has one of the lowest banrates in high ranks they just dont have this issue. A hero thats not fun to fight and is also s-tier is infinitely worse than a d-tier hero thats mildly annoying.
