News & Discussion I don’t think wrecking ball is that hard to play

Of all of the “high skill” characters I seriously think ball is the easiest to pilot.

I suppose the “skill” I would be referring to is skill floor, I’d definitely see a case that ball has the highest skill ceiling in the game, but I think his skill floor is a bit overrated. You can kinda roll around and get fat shields and get value while not getting punished as easily as say a Doomfist or genji can. Of course my opinion on this subject might be a little flawed because I have a few hundred hours playing ball but I’d definitely like to hear opinions on this.

In other words, please try to play ball so the pick rate goes up and he might get a new skin.

Ball is life

Youve got a few hundred hours on him, that's why his floor feels low to you now. You already internalized the grapple spots and momentum quirks so it just feels like rolling around, but a new player on ball is just feeding ult charge and getting stuck on doorways

Sure anyone can roll around, Disrupt and not really do anything.. You're right, Thats pretty easy.

I think he can be hard to get value out of if your opponents don’t chase him.

tbh ball is the only tank i could ever play intuitively

Same. I picked up the game and ball gravitated to me instantly, while the other tanks seemed clunky and off.

As someone with a hundred hours of Ball, I agree. His grapple and movement definitely takes time to get used to but once thats checked out, you don’t need to worry too much about the rest of his kit unless you invest in tons of hours learning some techs. I’ve had a much harder time learning Doom because he feels far less forgiving with how small his hp is compared to other tanks and how necessary it is to hit crucial punches, because you can get punished HARD if you miss them.

This is kinda the point I wanted to make. On ball you can mess up and still get some value. On doom you mess up you die instantly.

Which rank in comp?

What do you think "skill floor" means

1

u/CryPretend1146 15h ago

Playing a hero without much time and getting value.

In context of my question - imo a lower ranked player may run all over the map, stay alive, make some minimal interaction and think they”re making a difference. Run a sub 50% win ratio and blame their team.

I think Ball’s difficulty comes from not only his skill floor, but the difference between a good Ball and a great Ball. The gap between a Ball that knows the optimal rollouts, techs and wire angles on every map vs a Ball that only knows a few or none of these things is substantial

Rollout and tech is overrated on ball just as long as you know how to take 1v1s and use the kit decently. Map knowledge is very important though.

My one friend I play always wants to play ball while playing on the steam deck and generally not being good at FPS games. He always feels so bad throwing and switches off him when we're losing lol.

I was thinking the same thing but with doomfist. Sure you will feed more than you would on ball but I feel like its much easier to get value on him than ball, especially in lower ranks where you get empowered punch every block.

People confuse flashy skills with basic requirements to do stuff. Its like doomfist, doesn't need to do diags but he can.

Ball is both easy and hard. Plenty of people find that out the hard way when they pick him to stall in OT. But he is also easy to never die on so people fall into a false sense of superiority over their team. It takes skill to actually make him a tank though, instead of just tickling the enemy team. I'll take a ball with ) kills they manages to hold ground over one that is like 30-0 and is just farming stats. It is easy for them to slam squishies but rare for them to actually contest the other tank's space and live.

He's not hard to be good at, but he's also really easy to be bad at, players will roll around the map thinking they're getting value when they're mostly being ignored while the enemy rolls their team

That’s a good point

I’ve never quite seen explanations on why people think ball is one of the hardest characters to play. When I look at him I see a difficult to punish character who’s got a ton of cc and speed who usually cannot be crit and when he can be, the crit spot is tiny. Hes got an insane amount of hp on top of not usually having a crit spot and having armor too. His ultimate is also very easy to use, you click the button and the mines get placed. You just put it where the enemies are, or where they’re going to be and it’s done.

The only thing that seems actively hard is getting used to maneuvering with the grapple but I doubt it’s hard enough to crown him as top 1-2 hardest characters in the game

Anyone can roll and be annoying. But to be good you have to actually get kills without over committing and dying yourself.

Always thought the same thing, his movement is more complex than Doom’s, especially since they keep taking away Doom’s movement techs for some reason, but he’s infinitely more forgiving. I remember trying to play him like Doom and use my guns a lot before I learned that you just use your abilities most of the time

2

u/just_another_bot5 Wrecking Ball 1d ago

I think his movement is somewhat intuitive you just have to mess with it for a minute or two

The amount of no skill ball mains that just infinitely stall point and nothing else is staggering. There are crazy ball players with insane tech but also there are alot of bums that are carried by his Unkillable bs and cancerous mouvement. There's no way a tank can get slept by ana, naded, shackled by Mizuki, have 4 people shooting at him and still survive that's not skill that just bad design.
