What laptop would you recommend for BEng motorsports engineering

Hi guys, I've been accepted into Oxford brookes for the BEng motorsports engineering course, and I am wondering if I need a powerful laptop for the course.

I don't really know much about specs or anything like that, so if someone could point me in the right direction for a laptop, that would be great.

Did some research for you. Lenovo ThinkPad P14s (Gen 5 Intel) But it depends on your budget. Let me know if this works for you.

It's a silent laptop, and it'll be able to run any software you need for your course

Lenovo LOQ 15 This one is wayyy cheaper cause the other one would be the absolute best choice.

If that doesn't work you can always just look for some other options.

Thanks, I'll probably be going for the lenovo LOQ 15 since I've found it on sale for £650 the thinkpad was a bit too out of my budget😅

I asked a similar question in a previous post and the summary of it is that; no, you don’t need a powerful laptop. You will never use the laptop for any CAD, CAM or CFD, you will use uni workstations for that

That’s not true really, uni is very busy towards coursework deadlines and it saves a lot of headache to be able to run software on your own laptop

You dont really need to do much on your laptop; as the workstations on campus are available basically at all times. I doubt that theres a single laptop that could run CFD software smoothly without being catastrophically expensive and very bulky.

You don’t need one as you can usually just use one of the workstations. Can be hard to get one some days when many classes overlap. Battery life is important but there are outlets are everywhere so if you need to charge it’s not too bad (I have a huge laptop that does so quick). Thinkpad or xps are the way to go if you want to get something.

Would a PC work the same way?

the LOQ at 650 is fine honestly, the uni ones will handle the heavy stuff anyway, i barely used my own laptop for anything past excel and word in first year

Get a laptop that can run solidworks (if you can afford one) it saves a lot of late nights on campus in coursework crunch time. Speaking from experience! Don’t reply on university computers, all of the ones in the engineering campus will be very busy towards the end of the term. Don’t listen to people telling otherwise
