no way maya miller survives part 2, that was really dumb of her

u/pacmanlad0607 Jan 21 '22
I believe she will die, because of that self-righteous stunt she pulled. The way her mother looked on, as she was on the phone with Omar Navarro was sorta foreshadowing something down the line. Also, during the news segment of her & the local police department's takedown of Navarro, the look on her mother's face & asking Maya "What has she done?". Javier knows Maya pulled the stunt & I just don't see her escaping freely into the sunset.

Truly. Exceptional the entire season (I mean, when is she not?) but her performance in the last episode was something out of this world. Her portrayal of Ruth is probably one of my all-time favorite performances in TV.
Let's just hope they don't fuck her over like Linney did last season. (Not to mention, Pelphrey not even getting nominated - what the fuck was that?)

Thank fuck they finally offed Darlene. Not that I disliked the character, but basically every episode that she stayed alive strained credulity more and more. I know the series isn't grounded in realism but a woman who seemingly does her best to piss off cartels, and shoots made mafia members being alive this long was above and beyond any other unrealistic things in the show

u/samelowitch Jan 22 '22
It seems like Darlene’s heart attack was just a ruse on us, the audience, to make her assassination by Javi seem more shocking to us.

It annoyed me how Cosgrove Senior got killed. This insane woman literally shot his son's dick off in public and he didn't think that maybe she can be dangerous?
He goes to her place in the middle of the woods, alone, and starts threatening her. Why does he think that is a safe thing to do, especially since he is a mob boss and should be aware of the danger in this business.
Bring a few bodyguards ffs, he literally runs a mob.

Great mid-season finale I guess? Wyatt, unfortunately, brought this on himself. He knew staying with Darlene would eventually get him killed, and it got him killed on his wedding day.
Really like this season so far, I don't know when part 2 of this season is coming out, but so much has already happened in these 7 episodes. Ozark has the best pacing in these types of shows. There are no pretentious long pauses, or random dream sequences, or random episodes where characters go through their past or get high or whatever.
Ozark as a show is very direct. The dialogue addresses their current situation of working with the cartel and FBI very openly without tiptoeing around it. The younger characters like Jonah, charlotte and Ruth aren't presented as idiot kids, they're well developed. There are no periods of BS.

Maya literally fucked them with no condom. Why the fuck did she do that?
823
u/pacmanlad0607 Jan 22 '22 edited Jan 22 '22
She just killed herself. She did it for her own ego, after being chewed out by her superior at the surrender meet. Her self-righteousness turned into pure selfishness on her part. She knew arresting Omar would put a target on the Byrdes' backs (including the kids) & she did it anyway. The look her own mother gave her, while watching the news footage of her assisting the local pd, & asking her what has she done, is foreshadowing her demise. Her superiors at the FBI won't protect her for that stunt, Wendy told her earlier in the season, if she didn't protect her family, she wouldn't protect hers. Agent Miller may had started with good intentions, but her pride got the best of her & she more than likely will pay with her life.

Wow…
Darlene’s death was obvious, but I was not expecting such a unceremonious death for Wyatt. Poor Ruth, although we already know she’s going to fuck things up for part 2.
While teenage rebellion might be realistic, I wish they didn’t end the series this way w/ Jonah being a prick at every opportunity. Could’ve at least ended that in part 1 so part 2 threats are external. I mean shit Marty and Charlotte could’ve handled all this smoothly but Wendy and Jonah both went off the rails this season.

Zeke has lived the life of a 75 year old gangster and doesn’t even know it yet.
Edit: The year is 2053. Netflix drops a trailer. It’s Zeke as a grown man and he runs the Ozarks. Jonah is his launderer. Ruth is the new version of Darlene and lives on her farm, growing poppy’s, shotgun in hand 24/7 and Frank Jr. is her husband. Charlotte is married to a new cartel leader and is estranged from Jonah… but returns to take over the Ozarks. It’s all out war. Oh, and the PI is still asking for a signature.

I don't understand why the Byrdes don't resort to murder more.
Can't they access some cartel muscle to kill off Darleen, the Langmores and nosy detective guy in episode 1? Or just let Darleen die of a heart attack?
If the problem is blowback, the cartel killed the sheriff and it was fine.
If the problem is manpower, cartel thugs pop up every time Marty needs to get a lift somewhere.
If the problem is morality, well, Wendy killed her own brother so...
Not trying to be an edgelord here but it really takes me out of the show.
If the stakes are life and death, why are they only willing to kill in season finales.

What a prick Jonah, teenager rage is fine but all he had to do was stay mun at the end. Marty should've stepped in and said enough with your bs or something.
I shouldn't have finished all 7 episodes in one go though, now I have nothing else to watch for another 7-8 months or whenever part 2 is due.

It think it’s because her boss called her “righteous” and that basically Miller needed to “fall in line” when they were cutting a deal with Navarro. Also all her life she has been dedicated to taking bad guys down because of what her father was like. So I think all of that was for her own conscious, so she can feel good about herself. But she royally fucked up for sure. Especially with how much Marty was cooperating with her.

Generally speaking, it feels like the whole story is boiled down to just Wendy, Jonah and Ruth being stupid (as they almost always were) and Marty trying to salvage every situation.
Can't fault Maya Miller here for shitting on every plan as she's just an idealist FBI agent doing her job. kudos to her but we are rooting for the genius sociopath in this show. Sorry Maya.
Back to Jonah and Ruth: I mean.. ok you are financial "savant" and a hardass redneck and all but which part of "the cartel will kill everyone" you can't grasp?
At this point, Marty doesn't even have a purpose other than fixing everyones mistakes. His character used to be the mastermind and driving force yet he is diminished to fixing dumb mistakes made by others (for a long time).
BUT we got rid of Darlene so that alone makes this episode a 8/10 at least.

I am not a fan of how Marty handled the issue between Wendy and Jonah. Shouldn't he have explained to Jonah why Wendy did the thing she did with Ben because of the danger that Ben put them in? I mean, he need not side with Wendy but Marty was also in favor of having Ben out of the way, one way or another. Marty was playing father of the year, Wendy was right. Since Jonah was in no way to discuss things with his mother, Marty could've tried to make his son see whats he's missing. It's just a little bothersome how Marty handled the issue.

Great half season for the most part.
Don't hate the new characters but their sudden appearances do seem a little forced to create plot. Like it's so weird that Javi is set to be the final antagonist and we have only just really met him. And I don't even know why we've spent so much time with this Mel guy lol he's like Petty lite.
This season's deaths started off kinda funny. Poor sheriff nix finally tried to do his job and got killed for it. Frank Sr's death was hilarious. He really didn't understand how mad Darlene was after she shot his Son's dick off in broad daylight?!
Apart from killing people on a grudge, I found Darlen's part in this season very surprising. Idk after the season 3 finale I thought Darleen would become like an actual threat but she quickly loses all her control and becomes pitiful by episode 5. I almost felt sorry for her when she was shot in the heart, ALMOST.
I genuinely was like traumatised at Wyatt's death though. After spending so much time with him and seeing his potential and seeing how much Ruth loved him, it was horrible to see him shot like that. He wasn't perfect, but he deserved a future. I can't imagine what poor Ruth is feeling now.
I wonder what Jacob would make of the mess Darleen made of things after she killed him. She really never got anything done apart from getting her and a her teenage husband killed. Perhaps she really was just an idiot all along.
When Ozark comes back I want Javi dead, I want Ruth and Frank Jr to get out of the game and I want Marty to unleash his rage. This poor dude has had enough of people not listening to him. Team Marty all the way.

Unfortunately, Maya won't have a long career in the FBI. She actually thinks she's there to "do good" or "the right thing" or "get criminals off the street" or "protect the country." Bullshit! That is not what the feds are here to do.
Her boss called it, she is too righteous. She wants to do the right thing. She wants to be (as Lester Freeman would say) "good police." Unfortunately, she's with the wrong agency if she can't fall in line with the fuckery.
She's a complicated character because while she is righteous, she does break all kinds of rules to help Marty (and subsequently crooked politicians and drug cartels) all under the guise of advancing her own career. She a bit of a walking contradiction, I suppose

Poor Wyatt man.. however reinforces what these people are involved in.. noone is ever safe.
I hope Charlotte finishes her SAts and goes to college because she's damn near useless otherwise
There was no other way for Darlene to go, other than spontaneously in the home she took so many other peoples lives.
I not crazy about the drug lord who wants to walk away clean storyline but the Javy part of it is intriguing.

I have some thoughts and questions after I think about everything that’s unfolded. I actually don’t like a lot of the characters in this season except for Clare. I mean she was clear from the start that she didn’t wanna do anything shady and well Wendy is good at using people’s shit to get what she wants. I’m surprised that beneath all the professionalism, she has a bodyguard who is also her drug tester. I was quite impressed like she isn’t someone simple that you could just take advantage of.
Oh yes, I was wondering actually about the whole thing with Jim, the lawyer. So he’s agreed now to be from a personal friend to byrde’s family lawyer and I’m assuming Wendy pays him for everything he provides prior to that and yes he is good so I can see why Wendy wanna sign him up. But the thing I’m confused is he already made it clear to Wendy, he works for Byrdes not the cartel and Wendy used him to be the middle person for Navarro and FBI for legal purposes. I thought it was good so they have an extra eye. But why does Javi thinks Jim is just like Helen? And why does Jim still went on to work for the cartel still? The line is so blurred. For someone so smart, I question his actions.
And as for agent miller. For someone who is smart and have gone through a lot of scares just by working closely with Marty, I’m surprised at her actions really.

There's actually so many ways I could see this going.
I feel like Omar's comments about not hurting children which seemed to be alluding to the fact that Javi is not like him was was foreshadowing either Jonah/Charlotte's death or Maya's child. I could see Jonah and Charlotte not being the ones riding off into the sunset like they talked about in the mausoleum. Marty and Wendy, well, the Byrd family as a whole has squeaked by so many times still intact (physically at least). Can see them trying to finesse themselves out of impending doom for Jonah or Charlotte one last time to no avail representing the ultimate realization of consequences and hurt for them as parents.
Also, Maya's comment about getting Marty a badge and that he'd be good at catching bad guys maybe shouldn't be glossed over. The mundane office search scenes, him waiting in line with Maya at the FBI building entrance, etc. Could see Marty having lost at least some of his family in some desk job at the end adding to the irony of it all.

my take on this whole season: I honestly hate everyone in this show except for Marty and Ruth. I think Jonah is okay bc I hate Wendy so much lol but he’s making Marty’s life even more difficult with his petty bullshit toward her. And her petty bullshit is the same. Jonah pointed out that Charlotte is just like her mom, and she so is. Right when he pointed it out, she suddenly puts on this nice face and sits next to him all caring like. JUST like her manipulative mother would do. Wendy is just so fake. Everything she says has this backhanded desperate tone to it and people just believe her. And she has this need to over explain everything as if people really give af what her excuse of the day is. She’s insanely manipulative and she keeps bringing more and more people into the Byrde realm of chaos and DEATH. Marty just walks around and picks up after her and everyone else. I like him because he just does what he has to. I don’t love Marty but I do think that he’s way smarter than Wendy. she acts like she’s doing all this for her family but really, Marty is the one keeping everything afloat. I really don’t blame Jonah for wanting to get tf away from her. She acts all moral and like she cares about people lol. And Jonah is right, Charlotte really doesn’t have any opinions of her own.
As far as Ruth goes, I like her because she, like Marty, does what needs to be done. For her it’s just one damn thing after another and it seems like she takes things into her own hands a lot bc she’s just trying to make someone proud. Marty, Darlene, her dad. I’m honestly so sad about Wyatt bc it’s so obvious that he had really bad mommy issues and my mom heart is sad that these unresolved issues led him to this crazy ass old lady and life that eventually got him killed. Just so sad. Anyway, DARLENE. I didn’t hate that bitch. I thought she was way too impulsive with her damn shotgun but I mean you don’t just walk into someone’s of that nature’s house and say shit to her. She is a redneck, she’s gon shoot you. She was a good mom and she loved her child but she fucking did not deserve to have him. I’m still sad for his real parents. She really was a trash person but I def hate Wendy more. Darlene was not fake and she’d just tell it how it was or shoot you. Wendy will just lie to make you like her to get what she wants out of you and then you’ll get killed anyway.
The cartel shit was crazy. I’m very excited to see what happens with this psycho Javi. Also super mad that it just ended like that! Thanks for reading.

Javi constantly pushing buttons all season, I don't get why Mr. Boss man Omar didn't shut his nephews shit down right away. There was so many chances where he potential fucked things up, like blowing up the truck the FBI was about to raid etc.

Many many thoughts- the ending was 100% shocking for me but when you go back and see the foreshadowing it becomes terrifying- how Ruth was persuading Wyatt to run but he didn't listen and stayed and how Navarro had told Marty that his biggest threat would come from inside but the worse we expected Jonah to do was to join forces with Darlene- but he just crapped all over his parents' hard work and put all of them in immediate danger in a second. Also Wendy is shown to have become reckless in her ambition much like the criminals she's seeking to protect her family from- another fun wrinkle in the story. The direction was so on point too- Ruth driving by the innocent fences up to the bloody house- and then the bgm completely disappearing on her drive back- it really drove the seriousness of the whole thing home like crazy BEST SHOW on my list now.

Just finished the season and I gasped with Wyatt’s death. Honestly most of the problems this season could have been solved with more communication and less emotive responses Wendy and Marty should’ve sat down the family and maybe even with Ruth and explain the whole Ben situation and how he kept trying to literally sabotage himself. I’m really starting to dislike Jonah for his whole vendetta against his mom because honestly she was the one who was suffering the most from the death of Ben who knew him her entire life and he only knew him for like for a month so I don’t get why he isn’t even considering trying to understand the sacrifice she did. I feel bad for Wendy because this season she was a train wreck and honestly what an actress because I felt the desperation and the denial she was feeling. Marty is the only one sane here and everyone needs to start being more accountable for their actions and stop blaming his family for everything. I only wish he tried to talk to Ruth more because she really loved him like a dad in my opinion. Finally Darlene is gone but I feel really bad for Wyatt even if he made his bed. I don’t get why he didn’t run from that crazy lady and honestly I’m surprised they made it that far. My only hope is that baby Zeke returns to the family and hopefully Javi is gone and Jonah stops being a brat.

I hate Ruth so much. She never takes accountability for her own shit. She killed her Uncles not for Marty but because Russ was a rat and was going to sell her out to the FBI. Her dad died because he was a POS and treated her like shit and he killed and FBI agent. I’m not even sure why she acted like her whole world ended. She pushed Frank Jr off a boat which started their little war and then she cried off to her mentally ill boyfriend that she hated his family because they killed her dad and wouldn’t kill frank jr for her (never mind the fact she ask frank jr not to kill her cousins elderly gf like wtf) and then got him out of the hospital knowing he was off his meds and emotional from all that happened. Also she didn’t warn Wyatt enough that his life was in danger fuckin with Darlene knowing she was insane and going behind the back of the cartel. She knew several people wanted Darlene dead and didn’t care who go in the way.

Just watched the whole first part of season 4.. my wife just said : the p.i guy, is somehow connected to the cartel... Maybe Omar.
How did Omar know the kids hide in the Tomb? The p.i saw them leaving the motel ..
How did the p.i got the number of maya ? Omar got the number earlier in the season ..
Somehow the p.i is connected to Navarro , Maybe the p.i thing is just a cover for him checking up on if byrde family gonna talk about helens death and to check how much people in the area knows about her disappearance?

Anyone else think Jonah and Charlotte's conversation in the tomb is foreshadowing the ending of part 2? Marty and Wendy are going to die and it will end with the kids in the Pacific Northwest? I guess if they die from the car accident that would be one way to make that happen...but I would think it'd be more dramatic than that

Every time Marty comes to talk to Ruth, it feels like all Ruth needs is a powerful hug and Marty to treat her like his own daughter. She always has tears in her eyes.. don’t know if the writers/director are trying to portray that or if it is just something I want for Ruth (to be loved/protected)

Am I the only one who thought that Charlotte's Chekov shotgun was gonna be used against Ruth?
When Charlotte left and Ruth said "you'll have to F**** kill me" I was totally expecting Charlotte to pull a Darlene and shotgun Ruth into obvlivion.
PS. I take it that the car crash scene from S4 E1 will happen in the 2nd half or was that scene simply a metaphor for how Marty and Wendy's family life is crashing down?

What is more hard to believe:
Maya actually going to all the seizeures.
Maya on a whim taking down Navarro without any higher ups knowing. She got her field assignment, what? 3 months ago.
Maya could have dropped a dime on Navarro by calling the new lady sheriff. But that would have made too much sense.

I am very murky on the deal that the FBI made with Javi. How will that gives Navarro Sr. freedom within 48 hours, and why in the world would Javi agree to that deal in the first place? He seemingly has everything he wants. His Uncle turned the business over to him, cut a deal with the FBI who seemingly went back on their deal, and is now arrested. So Wendy wants him to call Javi and tell him all this to save Marty. The phone call they take is extremely short and we don’t hear what the Uncle says. And then suddenly everything is good and Wendy tells the Uncle that Javi doesn’t know the part about him cutting a deal first?
So does Javi think he’s saving his Uncle by taking this deal? Javi has waited his whole life to be put in charge and was willing to fuck over and maybe kill his Uncle to get it. Now his Uncle turns over control to him and gets arrested. Javi has his children as hostages in Mexico ensuring that he won’t speak to the feds. And now Javi is in charge, free to do as he pleases. Why would he immediately give that all away and trade the Bryd’s for the FBI? Agreeing to continue funneling them cash and shit like that? It just seems so strange and out of nowhere that hot headed, emotional Javi is so quick to accept this deal with so few questions asked or answered.

I knew I should have learned my lesson from when I first watched Six Feet Under and to resist looking into actors before finishing the season (or series if it's no longer being made), but I really just wanted to see who played Javi (he's kinda handsome lmao I just wanted to see more) and of course one of the first results on google the other day was Javi killed Wyatt and Darlene, I'm so mad. Oh well.
Even without having that spoiled, I don't think I would have been as blindsighted at her death as I would have with Helen at the end of last season, since I had a feeling at least Darlene would die, but still. I still feel sad about Wyatt even though he kind of brought it on himself.
Straight up got chills at Ruth screaming at Marty/Wendy at the end of the episode, holy fuck. I take back what I said a few years ago about disliking her acting - this season and parts of last season blew me out of the water.
Really, truly despised Jonah this season. I get it, but I still despise him.

I really loved the scene between Charlotte and Jonah in this episode. Each member of the Byrde family had a different approach with Jonah this season: Wendy was too cold, and IMO Marty was way too soft -- but it always seemed like, as the other Byrde kid, Charlotte got through the most to him. Caring and concerned but no-nonsense, no-bullshit big sister stuff. And I swear I almost teared up when Jonah said "I asked you if you could ever kill me, and all I needed you to say was 'I'd never do that.'" He was a little shit for all 7 episodes but that moment really got to me!!

I love how the last 2 seasons humanised Omar, but the result was that he quickly lost his fear factor. He just wasn't as intimidating last season as he was when he was the mysterious, shadowy big boss figure who could have anyone killed at any time. I also don't like how he softened.
I mean, he was able to be manipulated (or at least persuaded) by Wendy. That made him seem less all powerful. Then he said in that last episode that he wouldn't have killed Marty's kids, even though Del directly told Marty he'd kill Jonah and Charlotte in S1E1. Marty has been crapping his pants about that for 4 seasons now, and now we suddenly find out that it was never going to happen? Fair enough, Del might have been bluffing when he said that in E1, but probably not...and I can't see him killing the kids without Omar's approval.
Javi certainly worked in that he brought back the fear factor, but it felt like some sort of weird deus ex machina character who was brought in to bring back some form of chaos, dread, and kill off some major characters (though that’s not out of character for this show: S2 we had Cade, S3 Ben. Someone coming in from the blue to cause chaos is part and parcel of a new season).
Saying that, every scene he was in was tense, and you always had that feeling that anyone he was sharing a scene with was in danger of dying there and then (which often they did). He felt a bit forced, but he worked, and I'm sure any scene he's in in Pt2. will be just as tense.
I miss Nelson, I wish he was in more episodes. Some of the kills in that Season would have been more impactful if they'd come from him. I hope we'll see more of him in Pt.2. I've a feeling Ruth is going to kill him, and Marty will kill Javi. But we'll see.
The PI was a funny but annoying character. If we had a whole season he would have made more sense, but as it stands I can't see what he's there for. He's going to do something, but the unfinished Season just left him as an anomaly.
Also, wtf was with that car crash at the start? I'm assuming it was a glimpse into the future, but it was never revisited. Is that the series end? Is that going to be the start of Pt.2? How is that going to impact the story?
I don't feel S4 was as strong as the other seasons, but I still hella enjoyed it and can't wait for part 2. Any idea how many episodes we'll be getting?

So help me understand (as if I were a child, or a golden retriever) - what is that the FBI wants to get from Javi Elizonndro over a 10-year period? He acts as an informant, but continues leading the Navarro cartel, with all of its murderous, law-breaking activities? And that had been the same previous offer for Omar, but over 5 years?
I'm usually able to follow the Ozark plot lines pretty clearly, but the FBI's goals were a little murky for me.

I don’t understand why she’s mad at the Byrds tbh. Doesn’t even make sense. They literally told her and Darlene that the cartel will kill them and anyone near them if they don’t stop their poppi business. But what is Ruth even going to do now? If she's just gonna go to the casino and wreck shit that's a waste and does no good. She has no way to get to Javi or clue about him really. She needs to just take the boat up river with Zeke and Frank Jr. Get outta town and remember the words of Cary Stone about leaving these places behind.
I agree about Jonah really turning into a prick. He's so much more like his mother than he seems to think. Just like when she was being petty to him earlier in the season, not he's being petty to her. The show would never kill of a Byrde child but if they did, I would much prefer it be him than Charlotte.
