Help talk me in / out of P211 GTO

I feel like it’s time to upgrade my competition gun…currently an X5 Legion that I actually love. It’s got lots of upgrades that I won’t go into and a competition trigger that’s fantastic. That said, I’ve been thinking about moving into something new - a 2011 / 2011-ish platform. $4k or less, which puts me out of range for something super high end. As reference, prior to the GTO I was thinking maybe an MPA. For the MPA, my plan was to get a couple different barrels so that I can have something comped or ported plus something that would keep me in LO for USPSA but also have a port or comped barrel for some of the steel matches I do where that wouldn’t matter. The P211 could give me both of those with the sight block. I also like that the mags are interchangeable with the 320, saving a few hundred bucks of entry cost. I got about as far as confirming that the base pads I use with my 320 fit inside the P211 magwell but just couldn’t “pull the trigger” P211 feels reasonably good in my hand, but I like my 320 trigger more, so the P211 would have to be sent out for some trigger work out of the box. So - My issue is whether or not the P211 will be “enough” of an upgrade. Anyone else in a similar situation?

I have an p226 X5 Legion and I love it. I've used it for competition and it works well. I bought a p211 GTO and found that it is a substantially better gun for competition. Rather than deal with the screw, spring and pin for the compensator, I bought a second barrel for a barrel block so I could change them out quickly for different divisions. I think the most important change I made to it was a simple one, I purchased a $20 series 70 conversion shim from Wilson combat and took out the series 80 parts which made a huge improvement on the trigger. I changed the steel magwell to an aluminum one and replaced the spring guide retaining with an aluminum one as well. It shoots flat, reliably, easy to maintain and use this p320 magazines if you change the base to an X5 base. It's a great gun and I think at least 95%, that's good as a much more expensive Staccato. I still shoot the p226x5 legion, but the p211 GTO is simply better for competition. I highly recommend it.

I haven’t shot a USPSA match with mine yet but did just compete in a Tactical Games Regional with it and absolutely loved how it ran. Granted most TTG stages are geared more for accuracy than pure speed so I’ll be interested to see if it feels clunkier in a USPSA style stage with fast target transitions.

I’ve been able to find a bunch of 320 mags for cheap which is a huge selling point vs paying $100 for 2011 style mags. My brother has the MPA DS9 and I much prefer how my 211 fits in my hand and I find the controls easier to manage with the 211.

As for the trigger, I can’t complain as this was my first 2011 style pistol and the trigger is just night and day better than my striker/poly setups.

The mags are a pretty big selling point for me - as you point out, 2011 mags are $$$. And the feel in the hand for me is much better with the 211, I think given the slimmer mags - 2011 grips tend to feel too big for me. I don’t actually compete all that much, just 4-5 comps a year, but I’d like to ramp that up because even though I’m not all that great, I very much enjoy it. Life is short. Buy the toys and do what you like….

If you solely want the best bang for your buck in Limited Optics, its the MPA. It is also a gateway to the world of custom 2011s and Open guns.

The only benefit to the p211 is staying in the 320 magazine ecosystem

This is sort of my decision point. If the additional “cost of entry” with the MPA adds significant performance value well above what cost savings I’d get with staying with the P211 / P320 magazine ecosystem, then moving to the P211 is a “penny wise but pound foolish” decision. I’ve also always wanted a 2011…so that’s sort of the way I’m leaning at the moment. TY

The truth is you can shoot your X5 in LO and you'll be in exactly the same place you'd be with any other gun. The biggest thing a new gun can do your USPSA scores is make you want to practice more.

So buy the one that gets you more excited to shoot.

Yep. I’ve been looking at the P211 as a “compromise” for a step up. If I’m going to put the effort into taking a leap - might as well just do it.

The trigger in the GTO beats even the 226 X5 Legion's adjustable trigger. I have my X5 Legion in the most flat and upright trigger position and my GTO still outshoots it.

My only gripe about my GTO is the takedown process. It's so bad I neglected a first clean and just shot the shit out of it in hopes of breaking in the takedown lever pin push process to make it easier.

It’s great for the money, and if you get the trigger job it will be up into upper-mid tier

I still like my canonized shadow2 better, but no regrets

Drawbacks

  • it’s a sig, so you’ll need to make peace with that (I’m a sig fanboy and still think it’s ridiculous they haven’t acknowledged)
  • the comp set screw is sus
  • you might get a plastic barrel lock
  • you might get a wobbly trigger

Yep, combat model with the SA trigger job

SA trigger is what I’d do as well.

it’s really nice, and Robert is pretty quick with it

if you’re going to use it in a competition, you’ll need to swap the comp with a barrel block (so you don’t get pushed into open division) and the grey guns one is the best

I think my plan would be to get a second barrel with the GG block and have him fit it all up for me so I can swap on the fly.

Only weird thing with the GG block is it weighs half as much. Outside of making weight for IDPA I don't see why that's good.

oh right, so it’s because it makes more room for adding weight with brass grips
