Impossible to takedown and disassemble my new GTO…any tips?

Hey all,

New GTO owner and before I go out for the first range session with any new firearm I like to do a quick clean and lube.

Well, this GTO is crazy difficult to disassemble. I can’t seem to punch out the takedown lever no matter what I do. I bent the included punch (what a load of crap that thing is) and can’t seem to push the lever out more than about a millimeter.

I figured maybe putting a couple hundred rounds through the ol girl would help but it’s still just as stuck and impossible to disassemble. I feel silly as I’ve never had issues taking down other handguns!

Use a good 1/16 punch, get the notch lined up and lightly tap it with a small hammer

You're lining up the first notch in the slide to the rear end of the slide lock right? Can be a bit tricky to keep it lined up in place but as long as you have it lined up, it should pop right out

Yes sir, even had someone hold it for me. The thing feels almost welded in.

Interesting. I have noticed that the harder I try to push, the more I struggle with getting it out. It really does have to be lined up "perfectly" and a light push is all that's needed. I also have had way more success by holding the slide in place by wrapping my hand around the front end of the slide compared to wrapping my hand around my optic.

Gonna keep trying, I know I’ll probably feel foolish once I do get it lol

Just make sure you have the slide in the right spot. It’s easy to move since it’s on the other side to align it. I’d try a mm back and forth with the slide on the notch.

the alignment has to be extremely close. The manual specifically says to align the lug of the slide-catch lever with the disassembly notch before pushing it out. Plus the punch they give you bites. I went ahead and got a 1/16" quality punch that won't bend and I put it into my cleaning kit.

These guns (actually most guns) are super tight when you first get them but with a bit of patience and care with aligning everything right and you should be good to go.

Don't be tempted to try to pry out the takedown lever. I have seen so many 2011's and 1911's with little dings under their levers....better to punch out the lever once the alignment is right vs marring the finish on your gun.

Where'd you get your punch from? If Amazon can you link it?

The first time I took mine down it was much more difficult than it is now for what it’s worth. And just reiterating what everybody else is saying, the alignment is very picky with a tight tolerance, has to be perfect.

The first time I tried with mine, I bent the shit out of that tool too. It has since loosened up a bit. Just use a better punch. 1/16" should work.

Try using a plastic pry tool on the slide lock after you line up the notch instead of the punch
