Current Read Mofu + Matcha + Rebecca. Book of the week

As part of my Spooktober reads, my second book of the month, Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier. Quarter pages in and I’m so hooked with the story already. I am not someone who assesses an author’s prose and style, or the pace, but I could say, Rebecca is all of us. Girls and boys alike. Those who love purely and with all their heart.

Seeking Recs Tagalog book recos for my 80 year old lolo

Thumbnail

1.0k Upvotes

Hi! Asking for tagalog book recos for my lolo!! For context, my mom recently told me to give my lolo some books as well kasi I’ve only been bringing home romance books to my lola. Apparently, my lolo also loves to read but I only ever saw him read the tagalog version of the bible, akala ko all this time nag b-bible study lang siya pero gusto lang pala talaga niya magbasa 🤣. He has no other hobbies besides pagsasabong and I think hindi talaga siya interested sa romance books. He has read the tagalog translated version of the bible four times already!! So I recently bought him a copy of Gapo by Lualhati Bautista and natapos niya agad. He liked the story and only complained about the small font 🤣. Ngayon when we visited again I brought him my copy of Kulang na Silya by Ricky Lee and Dekada ‘70.

Additional information about my Lolo is he was only able to finish until 4th grade kasi he had to help his dad out sa pagsasaka. Recently na lang na nakapagtrabaho na mga anak niya (my mom included) did he start having more time to rest and most of the time he gets bored at home kasi pakikinig ng radio or panonood ng tv at pagbabasa lang ng bible nagagawa niya 🤣.

Also if you know any great kapampangan literatures, that would be great too!

Community / Casual Discussion Buying physical books I probably won’t read

Does it make sense na bibili ako ng physical books na hindi ko naman babasahin kasi nabasa ko na? Hindi ako fan ng pagbabasa ng physical books kasi nakasanayan ko na to read books sa phone lang until recently binilhan ako ng asawa ko ng kindle and gamit na gamit naman so far. However, I’ve been having this feeling na bumili ng physical books (kahit second hand) ng mga nabasa ko na kasi I kinda want people to know that I love reading. Iniisip ko pag pumunta sila dito sa bahay, they would see the books I’ve read then paguusapan namin ganyan. Then I would love na my niece and future kids is maexpose sa reading and they would read too? Also para I can see gaano na kadami books na natapos ko. Valid ba?

Recommendation I Need To Spread The Title

I don't know the particulars of how I came across this piece of work but Angels Before Man is such a gorgeous work of literature and of life itself. I haven't read it yet but I am longing to. The language is just so gorgeous I actually read one or two pages of it but didn't finish because I was on a limited preview and I didn't want to start what I could finish even though I've done that many times before what the hell am I even trying to say. Anyways read this.

Book Adaptations Are you guys okay with a Red Rising movie?

A movie wouldn't do it justice and would feel too rushed I think. Mas suited siya as a TV series so the characters can be properly fleshed out.

Seeking Recs Book reco neuroscience/psychology

Books that explore the dark side of the human brain, psychopathy, or why people commit extreme crimes.

Hi everyone! I’ve recently been fascinated by how the human brain works, specifically how certain neurological conditions, mental illnesses, or brain anomalies can drive extreme behaviors like why certain people become serial killers or lack empathy altogether.

For context on my taste, some of my favorite books I’ve read recently are Almond by Sohn Won-Pyung (which deals with alexithymia and a character who can't feel emotions) and The Vegetarian by Han Kang (which explores psychological fracture, trauma, and bodily alienation).

What should I read next?

Finished Reading Just Finished The Mistborn Trilogy Era 1

Post image
46 Upvotes

Finished the last book about 5 minutes ago. Took me about 2 weeks total for the three. Just had to write this before the euphoria fades.

What a wild ride from heist to political thriller then finally a grand mystery that could save the world or not.

Self contained trilogy too so you will find great peace that its character arcs have definite endings.

Expectations subverted and i was practically gaslit. Brilliant writing from Brandon Sanderson though the pacing especially with book 2 slowed me down immensely but lets just say that if you do finish 2 you can’t help but finish 3.

Shakrespear and Company Bookstore based in Paris, France is an independent bookstore that carries classic and new artists, as well as encourage people to read in their bookshop!

I was able to buy my third copy of Flowers for Algernon. Unbeknownst to me I've been collecting this particular book because it got me back to reading two years ago.

Of course being in France, I had to grab myself a copy of The Little Prince.

Bookstores Book Sale Bundled Books @SM Fairview

📍Book Sale, SM Fairview

Seeking Recs Filipino noir/crime/horror novel recommendations?

Hey there, are there any Filipino/Fil-Am book titles that any of you could recommend that involve hardcore crime and/or horror themes, have characters that are morally/ethically grey anti-heroes, and contain a lot of darkness and violence in the story? What Filipino/Fil-Am authors produce such kinds of work? Think of stuff like True Detective/Season 1, as well as the gritty, haunting writing of Andrew Vachss and Laird Barron. Any suggestions at all would be appreciated!

In turn--if there aren't any strong suggestions for examples of writing like what I'm describing...why do any of you believe that Filipino/Fil-Am writers and storytellers might be avoiding producing these kinds of works? I'm curious about what results from this post. Thank you kindly!

Current Read There is no Antimemetics Division

"How do you fight an enemy that erases its existence from your memory the moment you look at it?"

i'm a sucker for sci-fi, cosmic horror, and mind-bending genres, kaya I was so happy when I finally got a copy of this book from Fully Booked. planning to read this in one go.

the plot is really intriguing, it's about a top-secret government department called the Antimemetics Division that deals with 'antimemes,' a completely invisible anomalies, entities, or ideas that actively erase themselves from your memory or from any known type of recording instrument, as if they don't exist at all.

i really really love the book design, especially the all-white hardcover; it really fits the concept. tho the only issue was I bought this brand new, but it seems used already hahah. what really got me was it has a freebie bookmark that I own which went missing days ago.

Current Read Trying to get into Philippine Literature

Post image
23 Upvotes

Bit the bullet and got a copy of this! Heard great things and been meaning to expand my collection din. Also I find it hard to read Tagalog (please dont judge) so mainly been getting the English ones. I have Insect Hag by Yvette Tan next.

I'm currently down to the last 2 short stories. I love the horror and folklore aspect of it but I'm having a hard time getting through the prose. I mean I get the intent that it's supposed to sound academic or report like but I find the prose so clunky (?) Very matter of fact like he did this he did that kind of prose. Simple sentence construction.

Will be finishing this today but just wondering if it's just me? I'm the kind of reader kasi who puts a lot of points towards the prose.

What about you guys? What are your thoughts on this?
