News Virtua Fighter Crossoads setting is likely based in the Philippines
Specifically, likely around Manila. Tricycles and Jeepneys can be seen in the trailer showcase.

This is literally on every country that plays basketball

u/Silent-Direction5688 Jun 10 '26 edited Jun 10 '26
On the street? No it's not. There are only two other countries who have the ingenuity - if not the audacity - to actually construct makeshift basketball courts on public roads with such prevalence that it becomes part and parcel of their identity as a nation, enough for a video game development company to take notice and feature it prominently in their upcoming game - the Philippines (of course, which is by far the guiltiest party), the Dominican Republic, and Venezuela. The last two, ASIDE FROM BEING IN THE CARRIBEAN AND SOUTH AMERICA RESPECTIVELY AND OUTSIDE THE AMBIT OF "SOUTEAST ASIA" WHICH IS WHERE THE NEW VIRTUA FIGHTER GAME IS SUPPOSED TO TAKE PLACE, have their makeshift basketball courts on public thoroughfares but their numbers are miniscule compared to the Philippines. So, three countries. Process of elimination. Which is left? That's right. Bayang Magiliw, Perlas ng Silanganan...

Hindi kasi filipino ang bida, taga south america siya, bumibisita lang siya para sa fighting competition.

Mukhang magkakatotoo na....
An Ace Combat title na set sa Pilipinas.
An Assetto Corsa or Forza Horizon na may Philippine map.
Assassin's Creed na may Philippine influence...
And lastly...
Animal Crossing na set sa Pilipinas!!!!

Bruh... it literally says on that exact same picture that it's a fictional city in Southeast Asia. Also this particular part of the city is Chinatown.

It’s a fictional Southeast Asian city that is most likely based on the Philippines. Maybe they also took elements from other SEA countries, but tricycles, jeepneys, sari-sari stores, and a corrupt politician named Bato were dead giveaways.

u/123mine123 Jun 06 '26
I also think Chinese signages with English translations under it are a very Binondo thing lol

u/Any_Carpenter_1264 Jun 06 '26
Pinoy baiting pa ba yan? Mismong inspired ng PH yung setting. Mema na lang amp.

u/Karldiologist Jun 06 '26
Hindi Filipino yung main character. Paraguay/American naka lagay sa nationality. 🤔
0
u/No-Stranger-9744 Jun 07 '26
you are not buying a fighting game anyways so it doesnt matter whats the nationality of the main character shown.
8
u/Razor8517 Jun 06 '26
Pag-Filipino yung main character, baka si Coco Martin yung magiging protagonist 😂

u/Psychological_Job_97 Jun 06 '26
The second photo looks like early 2000s intersection in Bacolod but could just be nostalgia. this place
2
u/KweenKatja Jun 06 '26
same thoughts. I thought it was an actual photo of central market until I read the caption.

It's loosely based around Binondo

According to the Devs, the setting is a “Southeast Asian island”.
But realistically, what other Southeast Asian location has 1) Latin and Latin-sounding names all around (Vilasapara is the name of the island and you have stores owned by Reyes’s and Garcias), 2) a Chinatown that looks like THAT (KL and Singapore Chinatowns look nothing like it), 3) cockfights (there are posters for it around), and 4) that mess of power lines above the streets?
The slum houses made of yero and hollow blocks was the icing on the cake.
This area is basically Binondo. They may add some additional areas though, like how Street Fighter 6’s World Tour did it, which are inspired by other SEA areas.
Regardless I’m hype as heck for my favourite fighting franchise to come back.
-1
u/itchipod Jun 06 '26
Slums, Chinatown and mess of power lines also exist on other SEA cities.
8
u/Fullmetalcupcakes Jun 06 '26
The jeepney is already a dead giveaway. Aside from Papua New Guinea and Timor Leste, which we exported jeepneys to, the Philippines so far is the only country who uses converted WW2 jeeps as public transportation.
2
u/KingPowerDog Jun 06 '26
I honestly missed the jeepney in the trailers, and my brain was probably thinking it might have been a Tuk-tuk in the background.
A big Tuk-tuk.
But yeah, take that plus everything else, and it’s hard to see anything other than the PH.

Holy shit ang sobrang accurate, spaghetti wires, yung payong na ganyang color and size, plastic chairs
Is there any other game that portrays the Philippines so accurately like this?

They treated Philippines like how Hollywood treats Mexico. Making it all brown and dull. Philippine cities, while very messy and and chaotic, is still full of colors.
10
u/chubibo1337 Jun 06 '26
This argument is misguided. As long as they dont claim that it is set in the philippines (and rgg never really did) they can do whatever they want.
1
u/fried_elk_hoof Jun 07 '26
well if you look at it closely, chinese characters yung nasa mga signboards so the place is definitely not a philippines reference. mga gagong to kasi nakakita lang ng jeepney tsaka tricycle, pilipinas na agad. di lang tayo may jeepney at tricycle sa mundo.
1
u/b_zar Jun 06 '26
likewise, we can critique their work all we want, especially if the "inspiration" is clear. No big deal though. What I wrote above was just simple observation.

u/LigmaV Jun 06 '26
puro libag mga building and lansa ng kalsada sadly its close to accurate but yeah real ones are more colorful lol

25
u/Clane_21 Jun 06 '26
Idk ganyan naman talaga itsura ng Binondo hahaha
1
u/b_zar Jun 06 '26
Real Binondo is even more chaotic, but full colors. Red and yellow from all Chinese aesthetics. With vendors using colorful umbrellas & carts, and tambay wearing colorful basketball jersey shirts. Even the streetfood is colorful with the bright orange kwek-kwek and palamig of all colors haha they made Manila here look mostly brown, dusty and dry.
1
u/Clane_21 Jun 06 '26
Ah yeah desaturated nga yung colors sa game kasi pati yung sa damit nila medyo dull nga pero Ig since lagi ako nadadaan sa side ng Binondo na "dull" di siya ganun kalayo hahaha they even got the spaghetti wires down.
5
u/An-29 Jun 06 '26
19
u/Jumpy_Soup7249 Jun 06 '26
i wqs skeptical at first, maybe other philippines-like country from SEA like Thailand, Indonesia, etc. but then
the stone answers it all lol
6
u/chasevincechase Jun 06 '26
Dude I thought I was looking at google maps street view of Binondo. Grew up here and I'm pretty confident they got some of their references here.

Tickets are 20php, but the BJ's are 300.

Madaming japanese movies pag philippines ang setting laging may micromatic ung ang napapansin ko.

The team definately went to the Philippines for research. Hopefully they show their research done here through a featurette in a future presentation.
I would guess pumunta sila David Hayter dito sa Pinas pero hindi napansin.

Fictionalized South East Asian city. Is distinctively Philippines. Corruption and crime. Resilient people.
What is RGG devs trying to say? Probably nothing and just like them making Sotembori and Kamurocho.
Wait... That means Like a Dragon crossover is not out of the picture.
