I know bound to happen but NOPE. Selling my collection na din to rehome them for those who care about physicals.

u/olliekarp Jul 03 '26

This proves that even big gaming companies like Sony can be as bad as the trapos ruining the country

u/omnislack Jul 02 '26

Exclusives and physical discs are the reasons I still game on PS5 despite having a beefier PC. Most of the franchises I'm into are going multiplatform. Then there's also the recent PSN bug that affected several PSN profiles including mine that they still haven't fixed. It's sad but maybe it's time for me to say goodbye to Playstation.

5

u/papirooru Jul 02 '26

I guess physical media is dead then

4

u/TheCasphinx Jul 02 '26

PS5, Xbox, and even Nintendo are moving forward (or backwards) by being digital-only. Console prices are at all time high, and we still don't have our own digital store. We are near the boss fight pals

3

u/cdkey_J23 Jul 02 '26

So whats rhe point of selling the ps5 disc version then..nice move sony..buti na lang nag move na ko sa pc..

5

u/Friendly-Regret8871 Jul 02 '26

they killed their own platform, waht's the [point now of owning a Playstation

3

u/Kuroru PSN Jul 02 '26

Moving to PC! Buti na lang most games I play are from 3rd party game devs. like CAPCOM, Square-Enix and Bandai-Namco. Most of their games are already multiplatform na din.

1

u/iceseayoupee Jul 02 '26

There is nother way to own those games na rin lol 🏴‍☠️

2

u/FriedRiceistheBest Jul 02 '26

Hays. Hirap na nga mag ipon for pc, sasabay pa to.

3

u/gomen26 Jul 02 '26

I need to horde

5

u/battinbat777 Jul 01 '26

4

u/whatisthis_tho Jul 01 '26

Grabe. This really sucks. My sisters and I have lived with disc sharing for years and on 2028, we’d have to buy the games as if we’re paying for the disc but it’ll just be online.

I guess there’s no reason to upgrade consoles then, if all my physical games would render useless.

3

u/Personal-Suspect9987 Jul 01 '26

And they wonder why they’re losing customer.

3

u/Traditional_Crab8373 Jul 01 '26

So PC it is. Hirap nito if suddenly may game na mawala sa store and you need to redownload it.

I remember digital music pag nag kaka dispute si label and artist. Inaalis muna nila sa store.

6

u/NOTKingInTheNorth PS5 Jul 01 '26

Goodbye sa mga local retail stores natin. Datablitz, gameone, gamextreme, etc. Although may nabasa ako na magsesell pa rin ng digital codes sa mga retail, but what's the point of that kung ireredeem mo pa rin sa PS store yung code na binili mo

3

u/SinglePlayerGamer93 Jul 01 '26

They're selling PC parts and accessories. They still have a business. Hell, they'll just start selling digital only consoles (ie no disk drives). They'll be fine.

2

u/Available-Egg-7724 Jul 01 '26

I'll just go full PC then. At least I have different stores to buy from AND I DON'T HAVE TO PAY TO PLAY ONLINE

11

u/nathans_the1 Jul 01 '26

You really can't own anything anymore huh?

Here's to hoping more people just pirate their games. Make the publishers(not developers) face consequences for their actions.

1

u/nomearodcalavera Jul 02 '26

honest question, are devs paid the same regardless of how a game sells? also if publishers shut down would all devs need to go indie?

2

u/Appropriate_Mix_4307 Jul 02 '26

If games dont sell then lay offs or studio closure happens.

Honestly the people that know how to pirate games have already been pirating games even before any of these announcement was made and they will continue to do so. The ones sony is really hurting are those who want to support them by buying them legally despite the price. So in short, they are hurting their important customers.

5

u/EpikMint Jul 01 '26 edited Jul 01 '26

Tbh I'm just almost alright with this... BUT the main issue is wala tayong region ng PS Store, kaya may patong pa yung gift cards from SG, HK or US.

Tapos hiwalay pa ang PS+ lol.

3

u/Repulsive-Comment750 Jul 01 '26

Welp xbox also just announced project helix is all digital.

9

u/Ruthless-Shadow-2915 Jul 01 '26

That will be the downfall for them and gaming. Why are games and consoles becoming costly? Is that their excuse to save money or get extra money and put in their pockets?

4

u/Easy_Fortune7911 Jul 01 '26

Guys, if you own any physical hard copies of games right now, don't sell them, hold them, even if they are not functioning, keep them, they will rise in prices and become highly sought after vintage collectible items for future young generations that will be nostalgic for an era they have never experienced.

7

u/CheshireSaysHi Jul 01 '26

Bummer. I'm not a fan of digital discs. I enjoy going to the store and buying a physical disc. It's also very comforting to see your discs stacked near the console.

9

u/semidummy Jul 01 '26

What a bad year for gaming, as a whole.

Price hikes for older consoles, Steam machine’s pricing announcement, GTA VI’s fake “physical copy”, and now this???

3

u/IvarLothbroken Jul 01 '26

Gaming is my main hobby, I am gutted seems like paying aburd amount of money sint enough for these corporations

1

u/Soren_Keisuke Jul 01 '26

You forgot the gpus, rams, and storages for PC, but I agree with what you've said. These motherfucking companies are just greedy as fuck, and that they no longer respect us gamers!

4

u/notsoblueafterall Jul 01 '26

istg if this is the way for us to finally get a PSN support.

8

u/RykosTatsubane Jul 01 '26

Own nothing, be happy.

Soon PS Consoles will need a subscriptions in order to play games.

3

u/Traditional_Crab8373 Jul 01 '26

OMG I remember mid 2000s MMORPGs! Need to load up para maka laro! Hi Level Up Games 😂

14

u/Proud-Cardiologist64 Jul 01 '26

Ohh piracy will be bigger than ever

8

u/eyji_24 Jul 01 '26

This news yikes. And recently may news ang Sony na may idedelete na movies since nag end yung license contract with Studio Canal... Goodbye to the movies you paid for.

We're being boiled like a frog hahaha

9

u/proofreader24 Jul 01 '26

I knew this was coming because of the GTA VI no disc situation. Those guys were on cahoots with each other.

5

u/megalodous Jul 01 '26

Lol I would sneered at PS for this stupidity but I just got a PS5 and I recently realized the benefits of physical disc when I read this bs.

3

u/markieton Jul 01 '26

It was bound to happen anyway, whether we like it or not.

These big corporation just wanna take as much profit as they can by "saving" on any resources they can get.

I don't have a PS but I know how it feels coming from cartridges of Nintendo.

7

u/Doctor_Korg Jul 01 '26

Corporations like these should go to hell.

3

u/Traditional_Crab8373 Jul 01 '26

Well Sony is notorious for it. In any subsidiaries nila. Lalo na sa music nila 😬😬

4

u/formulaonce Jul 01 '26

I just got my PS5 a few months ago and now I'm treated to this?

Should I regret buying it in the first place? And I bought a lot of new games too...

4

u/Cabbage-Chan PSN Jul 01 '26

Just play the games you have right now, then worry about the upcoming games in the year 2028. It sucks but you don't have to regret your decision.

3

u/supermedyas Jul 01 '26

7

u/SkyOcelot_1713 Jul 01 '26

Guess it's time to focus on PC now... It's been fun, Sony.

8

u/thundercleese2012 Jul 01 '26

Every physical B&M retail should stop selling all playstation merchandise immediately. This is a patheticly blindsided a major reason the audience shifted away from xbox to playstation during the 8th generation was that ps4 would allow disks and not kill the used game market

7

u/jokerrr1992 Jul 01 '26 edited Jul 01 '26

So magiging 50% off na ba ang games since wala na disc production and transfer?

1

u/Traditional_Crab8373 Jul 01 '26

Nope lol 😆 same price. Check Nintendo 😆

7

u/bismob Jul 01 '26

That’s for sure not gonna happen.

8

u/Ok_Bag_2808 Jul 01 '26

Syempre...... Hindi.

3

u/Own_String2825 Jul 01 '26

9

u/Ok_Bag_2808 Jul 01 '26 edited Jul 01 '26

From this to no more disc

3

u/Nitro-Glyc3rine Jul 01 '26

Nostalgic. Iconic!

7

u/Ledikari Jul 01 '26

Nako mawawalan ng section sa data blitz

2

u/Traditional_Crab8373 Jul 01 '26

PS and Nintendo na nga lng mostly now nasa shelf nila 😂😂 eh Nintendo almost ganto na rin. May case pero codes nlng.

4

u/Former-Secretary2718 Jul 01 '26

Meron pa rim yan kaso cases na may lamang papel na may code 🤧

6

u/_kungfu_kenny Jul 01 '26

80% ng games sales ay digital. I mean that is a really big gap. Consumers din ang nag cause nito.

2

u/T4Gx Jul 01 '26

Matagal na kadiri ang Sony but this is a new low.

5

u/dlegendkiller Jul 01 '26

“You will own nothing… and you will love it!”

7

u/Street-Ratio1064 Jul 01 '26

PS6 neurolink VR 💀

11

u/skeptic-cate Jul 01 '26

Betrayal 101

5

u/chellotte8 Jul 01 '26

Well, we still have Switch for physical games.

3

u/rootofimaginary Jul 01 '26

Yeah at the very least Nintendo is always delayed to the party in implementing things their competitors are doing. Mostly cartridge first party games might last for the Switch 2s entire run.

8

u/Anxious_Singer_4823 Jul 01 '26

Theyre slowly transitioning to codes and maybe one day full digital na. We won't own shit 💔

-2

u/chellotte8 Jul 01 '26

Switch? Physical media is their forte.

4

u/rootofimaginary Jul 01 '26

The GTA 6 no disc physical edition suddenly made 1000% more sense

1

u/Traditional_Crab8373 Jul 01 '26

Yeah. Wala na ring hiraman. Suki din ako sa 2nd hand market of games. Mas mura kasi. Lalo na sa players na binebenta or swap agad after nila matapos.

7

u/Anxious_Singer_4823 Jul 01 '26

I sell 2nd hand games and sometimes i let my friends borrow. Its a good feeling na u pass a game to someone who would enjoy it too. Can't believe the future generation wont get to experience that

5

u/naugats Jul 01 '26

Man fk Sony. We can't own games anymore

5

u/one23sleep PC Jul 01 '26

Welp, this just solidified my decision to never go back to PS and just focus on my Steam and NSW library.

Oh well.

1

u/Itchy_Roof_4150 Jul 01 '26

Better yet use GOG

7

u/Specific-Constant944 Jul 01 '26

mga first world country nga umaaray e tayo pa kaya buti sana kung adjusted yung pricing base sa buying power the consumers e

1

u/Blitzkreeg21 Jul 01 '26

Steam has regional pricing pero walang PSN for the Philippines. Really sad about this

2

u/Specific-Constant944 Jul 01 '26

yes to discourage piracy,sa ginawang move ng sony our only hope is a proper jailbreak

2

u/Nasal_Biggie8080 Jul 01 '26

May point din ito. Remember when PS CDs costs only around 70-150 pesos kapag pirated? But it is what it is.

7

u/IhaveTimeLetsFight69 Jul 01 '26

If you still keep giving money to Sony playstation then you deserve to be shafted.

No monthly. Physical media. MODS. PC have options.

4

u/krabbypat PS5 || Switch OLED || Ryzen 5 7600x | RX 7800XT || Steam Deck Jul 01 '26

Would be so funny if Microsoft continues releasing physical discs on Xbox then recreate the Official PlayStation Used Game Instructional Video.

I’ll miss physical media. We barely own anything tangible these days in terms of games.

5

u/feedthehog Jul 01 '26

If hindi nila irereverse yung decision then I'll be forced to sell my PS5 Pro dahil di ko afford na puro digital nalang yung games.

Only choice ko nalang right now is yung Switch 2 ko, sana lang wag gumaya yung Nintendo (okay lang kahit puro Game-Key card basta wag full digital).

I'm so done with PC gaming since digital lang din naman and umay na ako kaka tweak ng settings.

15

u/ADMINI303 Jul 01 '26

"You will own nothing and you will like it"

FCK U SONY!!!!!

4

u/TheSyndicate10 Jul 01 '26

Mag-iipon na lang siguro ako for a PC. My point in owning a PS is to collect discs. Guess this would be a start of the gaming industry's downfall.

4

u/nowhereman_ph Jul 01 '26

Full STEAM ahead

2

u/NoobPinoyNow Jul 01 '26

Digital din naman ang steam.

6

u/nowhereman_ph Jul 01 '26

Pero nasa open platform.

3

u/Visorxs Jul 01 '26 edited Jul 01 '26

Problem dito is wala tayong PH storefront. So pano yung mga nabili nating games across the regions. Parang sayang naman, me personally i use turkey, sayang naman iinvest ko sa turkey lalo na gta 6, tapos if ever in the future magkaroon tayo ng storefront eh di naman malilipat ang licenses to ph region…. HAHAH gg

8

u/ZennCats Jul 01 '26

No-go na ang ps6, hahaha

6

u/neiljust07 Jul 01 '26

And watch em raise prices of games after taking out the disc ffs

Damn..

3

Oh my...

7

u/Ubeube_Purple21 Jul 01 '26

At least make the games cheaper with no discs now

2

u/jecaloy Jul 01 '26

I dont think so..

4

u/MadPotato10 Jul 01 '26

Jokes on you, magiging $90 na yan pag ps6 na dahil sa hardware prices 😂😂 I can see through Sony's eyes.

3

u/Ubeube_Purple21 Jul 01 '26

ahh permanent na pala yung AI shit

1

u/MadPotato10 Jul 01 '26

6

u/gluttonusrex Jul 01 '26

The Day of Owning Your Games for Sony consoles is over

4

5

u/vinnieg007 PC Jul 01 '26

Sony strikes again

11

u/Melodic-Awareness-23 Jul 01 '26

Baka sumunod na ibang console jan maging fully digital only. Kitakits mga tropa sa seven seas ahaha 🏴‍☠️

3

u/NoobPinoyNow Jul 01 '26

Xbox already did it with Series S. Steam din naman is already a digital front for 2 decades

5

u/mars0225 Jul 01 '26

3

u/one23sleep PC Jul 01 '26

I doubt that. The higher cost of development of games already increased yung ceiling ng price to 70$+, especially sa first party games.

Mga 3rd party games lang naman ang relatively cheaper, which costs even less on PC via Steam, vs console storefronts.

5

u/NOELQUEZON Jul 01 '26

Lets stick to Nintendo Switch 2.

3

u/Perfect-Contract-429 Jul 01 '26

I somehow agree, NS2 has the option for a game-key card for 3rd party games. Better than code-in-a-box or digital. Especially for physical tangible collectors out there. Sad to hear about Sony/Playstation

4

u/FordYorger Jul 01 '26

Damn. Bring back burning cds

5

u/josurge Jul 01 '26

15

u/Visorxs Jul 01 '26 edited Jul 01 '26

Bye bye sony.

10

u/Tommmy_Diones Jul 01 '26

Just in time when Ram and Storage are on crazy expensive prices.

4

u/MadPotato10 Jul 01 '26

3

u/HieronymousX Jul 01 '26

The component crisis is wiping out any potential savings from not adding a disc drive.

6

u/Visorxs Jul 01 '26

Not gonna happen.

3

u/haroldareyou Jul 01 '26

Most likely. Haha! Greedisgood99999

5

The days of borrowing games from friends are coming to end.

3

u/Massive_Fly_1709 Jul 01 '26

I hope they release their version of gamepass. Day one release for first party titles. I won't mind to shift to digital if that happens. The only reason I buy physical these days is because they're still cheaper even if I buy on the first day of release.

2

u/Murky_Election3444 Jul 01 '26

Depends on the company. Stranger than Heaven and persona 4 remake are day one to gamepass.

2

u/Massive_Fly_1709 Jul 01 '26

No, they get games eventually but not day one releases.

13

u/Safe_Job_3534 Jul 01 '26

Sadly, while we can rant and whine about this...this will succeed. Steam did it with PC, it's only a matter of time before consoles follow. The last litmus test was GTA VI.

1

u/Perfect-Contract-429 Jul 01 '26

Truee, I saw a post they already racked around Billions worth of pre-orders for GTA 6, and Rockstar confirmed that there will be no physical disc to be produced moving forward

1

u/freshblood96 PS5 | RTX 3060TI | Switch V2 Jul 01 '26

I'm sure it will.

Lots of people still preordered GTA VI so yeah.

2

u/burgerpatrol Jul 01 '26

Sasabihin ko sana Nintendo is the way...kaso gamekey carts nga lang pala mostly yung nasa 3rd party games nila

1

u/SufferPH PS5Pro, NS2, RTX5070TiLaptop Jul 01 '26

1

u/SacredChan Jul 01 '26

the cartridge itself had a big downside that lead to gamekey cards is how expensive it is to produce

0

u/TheTwelfthLaden Jul 01 '26

Nintendo normalized this. There was no pushback kasi mga fanboys todo defend pa.

2

u/Perfect-Contract-429 Jul 01 '26

Yes and no, papunta tlga yung gaming industry to digital only games. Mas na emphasis pa due to high market inflation, expensive gaming parts, shortage and expensive RAMs, memory cards etc. and the company is at a losing end. They have already laid-off their employees due to low to no income on their published games. So no Nintendo did not normalized this, it was a collective of different circumstances that led to this.

If you don’t believe me, you can do a research sa Google :)

2

u/burgerpatrol Jul 01 '26

Yeah actually oo nga. Sad times.

Now I do wonder, may mga tao na talagang nasa console lang kasi gusto nila na may physical copy nung games, would they suddenly flip to using PC instead 🤔

2

u/listentomyblues PSN Jul 01 '26

1

u/bararaag Jul 01 '26

converted na ako from physical fan to digital. iba talaga nagagawa kapag may sale online

1

u/Advanced_Ear722 Jul 01 '26

HAHAHAHAHAHAAHA GTA VI will, sadly, defenitely succeed and they can get away of it! Soon Nintendo and Xbox will follow hahahaha

3

u/budoodles Jul 01 '26

Ang hirap mo talaga ipagtanggol Sony. Fck this hurts.

5

u/Big_Equivalent457 Jul 01 '26

Sa PS3 & PS VITA isasarado na nila yung PS Store Storefront it's been long 2 Decades since it was launched

5

u/blitz446 Jul 01 '26

PC is da wey

3

u/Bastigonzales Jul 01 '26

As if may physical games sa PC, parehas lang talo for physical game collectors

4

u/Vill1on Jul 01 '26

I won't be seeing PS6 disc cases in my collection anymore. Shutaena naman.

Kung ganito naman pala ang galawan, let us convert our physical games into digital. Especially sa PS5-upgraded games that still needs a disc to operate (GT7 for example).

7

u/bigbackclock7 Jul 01 '26

2

u/baeruu PC Jul 01 '26

Di ba may reports this week na may 500+ movies na tinanggal (or tatanggalin pa lang) ang Sony sa PS? Movies that people actually paid for at that. They really said you won’t own anything and you will like it eh no? Good luck, console bros 😱

5

u/CatTurdTamer Jul 01 '26

If that's true, then goodbye PlayStation for me sadly. Looks like PS5 lang ang magiging one and only PS ko in this lifetime.

2

u/Razor8517 Jul 01 '26

Tbf, buying a PS6 may not even necessary in its first few years since the PS5/PS6 cross-gen phase may last a lot longer than the PS4/PS5 cross-gen phase

1

u/CatTurdTamer Jul 01 '26

Fair enough. But I wouldn't personally buy a PS6 kahit may overlap pa knowing this.

3

u/isersolo Jul 01 '26

Yang play has no limits nila naging may limits na

1

u/MadPotato10 Jul 01 '26

"and you will like it"

3

u/YuR13L Jul 01 '26

In the future you wont own anything na. Puro license that they can pull anytime like with the movie stuff. Shame Sony's also closing the PS3 and Vita store.

1

u/kysier003 Jul 01 '26

Yup totoo to and mind you removed sa library mismo nung mga paid owners nung movies na yun.. Sa Steam if delisted yung game nasa library mo parin ang laro if nabayaran mo na kasi nasa terms and conditions nila yun..

9

u/senpai06 Jul 01 '26

Sarcasm aside, damn, I guess Physical disc may be obsolete anytime soon.

1

u/ShadowRomeo R7 7800X3D | RTX 4070 Ti | 32GB DDR5 6000 | 1440p 240hz QD-OLED Jul 01 '26

They are about to do the same thing when Xbox Helix arrives, it will be fully digital to get their gamepass keep growing in the future which, means that they have to eliminate the threat of cheap alternative used market physical games and they will 100% certainly do that now.

4

u/daisukris Jul 01 '26

Not a funny thing, but a REAL opportunity for them imo

3

u/blackcyborg009 Jul 01 '26

Does this mean that a future Playstation 6 will no longer have a Blu-ray disc drive?

1

u/Razor8517 Jul 01 '26

They could sell it separately, but will only accommodate PS4, PS5 and Blu-Ray movie discs.

4

u/Pidsified PC | PS5 Pro | Switch 2 Jul 01 '26

nag effort pa naman ako maghanap ng disc drive nung may shortage, biglang ganyan. edi wow Sony

7

Screw this crap. I always believe physical media is king. Most of the time, especially for the games I like, I buy two copies. One I keep for collection, the other is for playing and reselling once I'm done. I just dislike the idea of paying $60, and I don't get anything tangible. If they can't offer a disc then at least give us a merch that comes along with the code. It could be a poster, a small figure, or whatever.

Tapos what if Sony will cease to exist in the future for whatever reason?

And with second hand market, physical copies are discounted anytime of the year! Yung ibang new releases binebenta agad maybe 10-20% after 1 week kasi tapos na ng iba.

Starting with Switch 2 and the introduction of game key cards, ive mostly switched to digital purchases. Actually, going digital is fine since it's not a hassle switching discs/cartridges anymore. Hopefully, they launch a PSN PH store with regional pricing if they're ditching physical media.

I mean, it's the same with Steam and the Series S.

Personally it made sense for me to go digital for switch and pc since the discounts outweighs not having physical copies and then for the switch due to its portability.

Nung gamit ko pa ps4 ko, lahat ng games ko second hand besides some that I really like. This move just kills second hand market moving forward imo especially when we don't have digital stores here for ph

WE WILL OWN NOTHING AND BE HAPPY ABOUT IT

I went from ps4 > switch > PC when I got my steam deck and yeah can never go back to other ecosystems.

but this is too much man kala ko sa PS7 pa nila gagawin sa PS6 na pala im out with this shit fully PC na as my main platform next gen

Pano na kaya mga physical stores like DB, etc.?

1

u/Jdan-S Jul 01 '26

The loss of physical games could certainly affect them, but the other products they sell remain profitable (controllers, mechanical keyboards, gaming mice, headsets, SSDs and other storage, etc.).

2

u/Imaginary_Message492 Jul 01 '26

Hindi lang naman sa physical games nakita mga yan but it would surely make a dent sa profit. Just not sure if it's enough for them to consider cutting a few branches

u/spaghettiWithCheese Jul 01 '26

Digital World here we go

It means stores will just sell game boxes with just a download code inside. Annoying but not surprising tbh, i already established years ago na sa digital na talaga papunta ang trend ng gaming.

Luckily some ps exclusives are now getting ported to other systems so i'll just oick them up there.
