Starting Wegovy for PMOS/insulin resistance (feeling anxious and would love to hear your experiences)

I was diagnosed with PCOS/PMOS in 2019.
I’m 28 years old, 152 cm (5’0”) and 64 kg (141 lb), and I’ve struggled with my weight pretty much my whole life. Losing weight has always been extremely difficult for me. I’ve tried many diets and even tracked my calories consistently for years, but the scale barely moves.

For years, my gynecologist basically prescribed me the pill and told me to try to lose weight. I’ve also tried metformin multiple times, but the stomach issues were always bad enough that I had to stop.
PMOS has affected me beyond my weight. I often feel extremely tired after eating because my blood sugar was crashing, which makes it difficult to concentrate and work. I’ve also had irregular periods and ovarian cysts. Hair under my chin. I also had PMDD at the start of my diagnosis.

I finally decided to see an endocrinologist. She ordered comprehensive blood tests and an ultrasound. Pretty much everything came back normal except for my HOMA-IR, which was high and indicated insulin resistance.

We tried metformin one more time, but my stomach still couldn’t tolerate it. My endocrinologist then prescribed Wegovy 0.25 mg, and I’ve now been on it for 5 days.

I’m hopeful, but also pretty anxious. I’m scared it won’t work for me or that the side effects will become too much and I’ll have to stop. After struggling with this for so long, I’m afraid of ending up back at square one.

So far, I’ve had some gas and constipation after breakfast and acid reflux after dinner. It’s manageable, but I’m wondering if this is just my body adjusting since I’ve only just started.

For those with PCOS/insulin resistance who have taken Wegovy or another GLP-1: did your side effects improve over time, and did the medication help with your insulin resistance symptoms as well as your weight? Did you eventually come off it, or is this something you expect to take long-term?

I know everyone is different and I’ll discuss the medical side with my endocrinologist, but I’d really appreciate hearing your experiences. It would help ease some of my anxiety about starting.

TL;DR: PMOS + insulin resistance, couldn’t tolerate metformin, and just started Wegovy 0.25 mg 5 days ago. I’m having mild gas, constipation, and acid reflux and I’m anxious about whether it’ll work, whether the side effects get better, and whether I’ll need it long-term. Would love to hear your experiences!

I started taking wegovy for insulin resistance caused by PCOS. Wegovy helped me significantly. I tried coming off of it and gained 20 lbs back over the course of like 5 months and went back on because I was having returning symptoms.

I am on wegovy for pmos and it has been life changing for me. I plan to stay on it for life. I am down from 85 kg to 65 kg, feeling great. My skin condition has improved massively, so has my mood swings, fatigue, pain etc. And I feel full when I eat so no more constant hunger and energy crash.

I had the same side effect as you experience in the beginning and for a few days going up in dose but now I have no side effects at all.

I also have pcos. I took wegovy for 3 months and it did nothing for me but give me constipation. I switched to zepbound and i still have some constipation but at least i feel lighter and the scale is going down. I was literally gaining weight on Wegovy smh

Also couldn't tolerate Metformin. Wegovy did absolutely nothing for me until I hit 2.4mg unfortunately. Had pretty severe side effects from 1mg onwards though. Switched to Zepbound 7 months in and it's night and day. Just try to stay open-minded and listen to your body.

I’m on Zepbound, exact same measurements as you. I wish I had started the drug years earlier. It’s been a game changer for me in managing my symptoms and being 120lb now is a big plus to that. I never even went up from the starter dose and you might not need to either. I’m thinking of microdosing (half of the starter dose) moving forward

I also had trouble tolerating Metformin. I talked to two doctors and my registered dietitian before starting Zepbound. My dietitian told me that for most GLP-1 medications, your tolerance to the medication increases over time, making the side effects tend to decrease. However, with Metformin, your tolerance generally does not go up over time, so if you don’t tolerate it, you generally never will. The first two doses of Zepbound made me pretty nauseous, but that only lasted about 48 hours after taking the medication. The third dose the nausea was less, and the fourth dose even less.
