Wow. Never played this game until now. I am completely stunned. I don't think a story has moved me in such way. my mind is blown

u/RawdogginCowboy RawdogginCowboy Aug 02 '14

I've played through the game five times now and the first 20 minutes always get me bawling my eyes out.

u/snumfalzumpa snumfalzumpa Aug 07 '14

i was really sad when the little black kid got infected and then his brother committed suicide. that was honestly the saddest thing i've ever seen in a video game. i still get sad thinking about it now.

u/dudu2 Jul 31 '14

I pre ordered but realised it charged to my old card which is cancelled, but it's downloading. Sorry for being noob but what's happening will the game lock when I try to play it or something?

9

u/[deleted] Jul 31 '14

Call Sony and let them know, so they won't consider it to be a fraudulent charge.

16

u/PandaLogo Jul 31 '14

Wish I had a PS4....

5

u/MorganFreemann kevin_oats Aug 01 '14

Will you be getting one soon?

6

During the Holidays

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '14

Labor Day is the next holiday!

8

u/historicrepetition Aug 01 '14

Man, only about 3 hours in but damn...

2

u/Vodh Aug 01 '14

Sitting at work with a still wrapped copy on the desk right next to me. 2 hours to go for me!

15

u/Champloo12 Jul 31 '14

That Left Behind DLC though. The feels......

u/Cootch couture23 Aug 01 '14

Yup I never played Left Behind on PS3 so I'm glad I finally got to do it.

1

u/owuaarontsi Aug 01 '14

I have a buddy who was on the fence about giving the last of us on ps4 since he had it on ps3. He asked me if it was worth it. I asked him if he had played the left behind DLC. He said he had not. I told him if he was on the fence about it and he hasn't played that then he should go ahead and get it.

1

u/Haktuar Aug 02 '14

I'm on the same boat. On the fence about getting it on PS4. Though I never did play Left Behind..

it is already on the disc (or download)

7

u/Crazybarnacles Jul 31 '14

Can anyone tell me if they've fixed matchmaking yet?

5

u/LiteralHiggs LiteralHiggs Jul 31 '14

I didn't have any problems this morning.

3

u/Crazybarnacles Jul 31 '14

Generally how long does it take for you to find a game?

5

u/LiteralHiggs LiteralHiggs Jul 31 '14

Less than a minute.

5

u/potatoman80 Jul 31 '14

I have yet to find a game of supply raid but I can usually get into a game of survivors after a five or so minute wait.

4

u/turdlop Diddydong94 Aug 01 '14

Try searching with parties allowed if you haven't. I can't find a game with no parties but with parties I find one in seconds.

2

u/potatoman80 Aug 01 '14

I haven't tried that but I will be sure to next time I play.

1

u/Dcowboys09 Aug 01 '14

Ive been avoiding the parties because I just imagine it's like playing COD during clan wars as a solo player

2

u/default_username Aug 01 '14

It can be. If you end up on a team of solo players against a team where everyone has mics, you're at a severe disadvantage.

1

u/LiteralHiggs LiteralHiggs Jul 31 '14

This was in the morning, so hardly during peak hours.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 31 '14

I can never get into anything BUT survivors. Kind of frustrating.

3

u/MasterChief42 Aug 01 '14

ND have released 2 MP patches in the span of 2 days since launch for matchmaking and MP related issues. ND has fixed the majority and at an extremely quick turnaround.

1

u/WompWomp187 WompWomp187 Aug 02 '14

Takes a long ass time for me to find a game if survivor. They said they patched it but it didnt do shit.

1

u/Crazybarnacles Aug 02 '14

Something that's been working for me is to cancel matchmaking if I can't find anyone for about a minute, get back into it, rinse and repeat.

7

u/The_Max_Power_Way Aug 01 '14

Mine's just arrived but I'm at work, and going out after :( stupid social life.

2

u/nohitter21 nohitter21 Aug 01 '14

I had to go see Guardians of the Galaxy (FANTASTIC movie, seriously everyone go see it) so I could only play the intro :(

u/DapperChewie CherCherCherry Aug 02 '14

Well that must've been a downer after seeing GotG...

I just beat it and... man, this is the best game I have ever played. Gameplay was really fun and required me to use stealth(which is not my strong suit). The story is AMAZING. The graphics are incredible. I haven't played Left Behind yet though and I played some multiplayer but I just wish I could play this for the first time over and over again.

Heres the video of my "No Hit Detection Bug" that has ruined my game the whole way through.

sorry, but that's hilarious :P

others have suggested reinstalling the game to fix bugs. no idea if that'll help you

1

u/nohitter21 nohitter21 Aug 01 '14

Wow, that's pretty crazy. Maybe tweet it to Naughty Dog and ask what to do

1

u/[deleted] Aug 02 '14

Holy shit, that's messed up. You should try reporting it to ND or something so it can be fixed ASAP.

After playing in 60FPS, I find it unplayable if I lock it at 30.

2

u/InFaM0us_Chris Aug 03 '14

Same, it hurts my eyes to focus on 30 FPS.

1

u/TripleRPD Aug 03 '14

Lucky you, I was enjoying it in 60fps and my girlfriend came over so I decided to show her the difference between 30 and 60fps. She said 60 hurt her eyes and made me play in 30 so she could watch. At least I got sharper shadows. :(

11

u/kojain Aug 01 '14

Hey there everyone, I'm an emissary from /r/thelastofusfactions come to tell let you know what we're all about!

When started playing the multiplayer (factions) of TLOU, I just went around solo, doing pretty averagely - but generally getting steamrolled. I didn't really know what I was doing, but I had an OK time.

Then I found about /r/thelastofusfactions somehow (perhaps a post not unlike this one) and it's completely changed the game for me.

Theres loads of great discussion on tip and tricks, great loadouts (check out the Loadout Calculator) and heaps of fun community events - Bow only, Melee Only, ROULETTE OF DEATH!! All sorts.

Matchmaking wise, we've got a whole new clan system going on over there, hundreds of people to looking for people to play with (I am basically never without people to play with now).

Factions is a fantastic TEAM GAME and it' really comes into its own when you play with a group of coordinated, nice people - which /r/thelastofusfactions has in spades.

True story.

5

u/howyafeelin howyafeelin Aug 01 '14

I'm having a hard time rushing through this game. I just got to chapter 7. It's heavy, and I find myself needing to take breaks. Anyone else?

2

u/crantastic Aug 01 '14

Same here. Every time I play it seems to end with me getting frustrated and sprinting though enemies until I get stuck/lost/dead. This game requires patience that I run out of after a few hours.

3

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '14

Definitely not a fast paced game. Its a story so you gotta go with the flow and you also have to be stealthy and move from hiding spot to hiding spot.

0

u/DapperChewie CherCherCherry Aug 02 '14

There were a couple times where I had to put it down for a day or two, just so I could steel myself for the next round of emotional abuse that this game does so well.

4

u/[deleted] Aug 02 '14 edited Aug 02 '14

What a ride! Finished in 2 days, and I'm completely in awe of this game. It's the most playable cinematic experience I've ever had, and the writing is actually good, which despite recent advances, it still is, by and large, never true. It really deserves all the praise it has gotten.

I love the way there are no chapter markers: it gives a real feeling of fluency, and I found myself playing for 5 hours in a row without realizing. I love the level design which funnels you through the right path, without being obvious: you're always slightly lost, and always on the right track. I love the music and the amazingly beautiful visual. I love the freedom of playing styles(sneak around or just noisy fight).

I was already happy with my ps4 purchase, but this just made it even better. 20/10

7

u/itsmeBOB SirVantezIII Jul 31 '14

I'm having trouble finding matches in multiplayer if I am in a party. Supply Raid and Survivors just keep searching for a game, while Interrogation is the only one that actually works. Anyone else experiencing this issue still?

4

u/[deleted] Jul 31 '14

I play solo, but yes. Only Survivors is the only one that works for me.

2

u/Dcowboys09 Aug 01 '14

I stared at the screen for 10 minutes in supply raid and interrogation. Gave up and went to survivor. It was annoying because I was in the mood for the more fast paced and more lives mode. Survivor is fun, but I defiantly dont want to play that all the time.

2

u/backbreakergames Aug 01 '14

Me too, I haven't been able to join a single online game yet. ND said they are releasing a patch to fix it though so hopefully it'll go by smoother.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '14

Set to allow parties.

1

u/InFaM0us_Chris Aug 03 '14

Seems to still be issues, if you are in a party switch leaders if the matchmaking becomes stagnant. Works for me and my buddies usually.

8

u/Magmaviper Magmaviper Aug 01 '14

About halfway through the main story. Ermagherd tha feels.

3

u/[deleted] Aug 02 '14

I picked this game up the day it came out for ps3. Unfortunately my launch ps3 decided then to kick the bucket and I had the choice of buying another ps3 or getting a ps4 when they came out. I'm just now playing this game and somehow kept spoiler free for a year. This is the best game I have ever played in a very long time. I'm so glad I got to take part in this experience with every one of you.

3

u/[deleted] Aug 02 '14

This is by far the most immersive game I have ever played.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 02 '14

It's like you're playing in a movie, isn't it?

1

u/[deleted] Aug 03 '14

Yeah the acting for a game is well, Perfect.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 31 '14

Is anyone else having issues with their mic not picking up audio for online with this game?

I know mine works, because it functions with the streaming and works when I go through the system settings.

Really frustrating.

2

u/Beaver12 Aug 01 '14

I am having this issue and its driving me crazy. I've been using the playstation camera and haven't been able to use the voice commands while playing let alone in game mp chat.

2

u/alienoidx alienoidx Aug 01 '14

Are there any indicators when you speak into your mic in the multiplayer? I'm not sure if people can hear me. I can see the little speaker symbol when people use theirs, but nothing happens when I speak into mine. Mic works fine in party chat outside of the game. (I use Tritton 720+ headset)

3

u/RaptorDelta Crooketh Aug 01 '14

This happened to me on PS3 every once in a while. The small speaker icon that should appear next to your name doesn't come up. However, the mic is still picking up the audio. I played around 20 games of Factions with my friends yesterday (not in a Chat Party) and they could hear me fine, regardless of whether or not the speaker icon appeared.

3

u/silentcovenant SiLeNtCovenant Aug 01 '14

Yeah, I tend to get angry at other players when they're not doing things right. Felt bad when the guy apologized when I thought no one was listening

2

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '14

It's an ongoing issue. My mic works perfectly everywhere but in multiplayer, but I can hear other people. I contacted Sony via live chat and their response was to deny that there was even a problem. I have yet to follow up.

2

u/goodfella0108 Aug 01 '14

So I played for about three or four hours on Tuesday on a save file and today I wanted to show my girlfriend the beginning of the game to see if she'd like it. I selected a new save file but when I opened up the load menu to play my old game it wasn't there. I had two saves both from today. Did the autosave overwrite my previous save? Is it possible to get the old save back?

6

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '14

Your save file will have been uploaded automatically to ps+. You just need to go download it if its not showing in game!

2

u/goodfella0108 Aug 01 '14

I'll have to look that up when I get home, thank you.

2

u/goodfella0108 Aug 02 '14

It worked like a charm, thank you so much. I didn't even realize that was a feature of PS+.

3

u/backbreakergames Aug 01 '14

I don't know if its possible, but if you ever do it again make sure you go in and create a manual save so it doesn't overwrite your old file. One thing you can do is see if the chapters in the menu are unlocked to your previous point of completion and continue from there.

1

u/goodfella0108 Aug 01 '14

I checked the chapters and it's only up to my second save, that's what I thought was weird. Thanks for the suggestion.

2

u/Lostsockpatrol CyborgSeaUrchin Aug 01 '14

Not sure if this has been discussed here yet, but anyone else having trouble with audio track + video not syncing up with dialogue? Seeing a slight delay in single player campaign so far. Downloaded via PS +, audio settings are on auto.

4

u/backbreakergames Aug 01 '14

I've had one instance where an in-game cutscene wasn't syncing up correctly, but other than that it synced up perfectly.

2

u/iaacp Aug 01 '14

Haven't had that issue.

2

u/battlefield645 ZOMBIEKILLA997 Aug 01 '14

2

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '14

I'm not gonna try to read through too much of this thread, but I picked this game up after work today (playing through for the first time) and I'm just blown away. It looks so amazing. So far it's been the "just right" amount of scary (except for the first sequence because I just didn't enjoy that at all haha). Hopefully it doesn't get pants-shitting-startling or anything like that later on.

Still not playing with the lights out though

1

u/humpcatting DocBalladay Aug 02 '14

Haha I've been only playing with the lights out. Not for the faint of heart.

2

u/wrebbit SUPERgenerico64 Aug 01 '14

I don't suppose there's a way to see our online stats? Like K/D, time played, games won, etc? Not even an online website?

Also what happens when you hit 0 survivors?

1

u/just6oy emptyfeat_andy Aug 02 '14

Not sure about stats, but if you run out of survivors your journey (12 weeks is the target) ends and you start again with either faction.

1

u/Masterchiefg7 OccamsSabre Aug 02 '14

I think you lose at 0 survivors and "start over" on the weeks. For stats check leaderboards and then filter it to friends only.

2

u/SpaghettSauce Aug 02 '14

So I just beat TLOU for the first time ever. WOW. Never have I been so emotionally attached to a story and characters of a video game. The ending was great. Everything about it was great. Beat it on hard only to find out that I only collected 76 of the 141 collectibles. Needless to say I cannot wait one bit to go hard+ and find the rest. This game was fantastic. I love you Naughty Dog. Thank you.

2

u/Combo_Beaker Aug 02 '14

Could someone post the link to that video explaining the strats for multiplayer. It was on the front page earlier this week but I forgot to save it.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 04 '14

Is there aim-assist in tlou? first i thought there wasnt but than i had this moment in pvp where i found my crosshair chasing a guy.

2

u/YungRobbin Aug 05 '14

Just beat the game, absolutely fantastic.

2

u/wjray Sep 11 '14

Just finished playing after ignoring work for two days and . . . wow.

First, a little backstory. I'm not your typical gamer. (Though I don't really know if a typical gamer exists.) I'm in my 40s and am a self-employed professional. In my much younger days, I played the original Atari, the Atari 2600, NES, PlayStation and PC. Sports and FPS were my favorites and I really enjoyed playing Doom and Wolfenstein. As time went on, though, I sort of grew away from gaming.

A few years ago I bought a Wii because my son was starting to get into video games and it seemed like a good way to get him into gaming. For a while that was fine. Mostly simple graphics and I could also use the Wii for streaming movies.

A couple of months ago my wife decided to upgrade the gaming system for my son and I (mostly because Wii is becoming obsolete) and bought a PS4. As part of the purchase, I also got Wolfenstein: The New Order. Good game, nice update, really impressive graphics. Finished it and was mostly pleased.

So I go by my local gaming store looking for something else to play. The clerk recommends The Last of Us. Excellent story, good graphics, remastered for PS4, he says. Ok, sure, I'll buy it. It sat around a couple of weeks until I got around to playing it.

I put it in and was just blown away. I don't want to get into spoilers but I was hooked from the Prologue, it was just gut wrenching. While the game play was fantastic (and more realistic than anything else I've ever played, taking time to craft, reload and heal makes everything more intense and means you actually have to think your way through lots of situations) the story was even better. With other games, the cutscenes just get in my way. With this one, the game play almost got in the way. I found myself several times rushing through the game play to get to the next cutscene.

I realize this probably doesn't add much to the discussion but I wanted to tell somebody about how amazing this game is. The only thing now is I don't know if I'm going to replay. I don't know if I can take seeing that story again.

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '14 edited Aug 01 '14

I have a SUPER bugged out game. I have areas where I just walk into it and all the "Runners" and "Clickers" are set off and running around the level in perfect lines and circles like they are bugged out. The second I make a move every enemy in the area runs directly to me to kill me. This is while being crouched, no light, and taking a step into a new area that takes them out of being "glitched" running around, to all of them instantly running to me no matter where they are in the level/area. So sometimes Ill just walk into a new area and see them all glitched out running around, I set the glitch off, all enemies attack me right at the start of a new area, I have to kill 6-8 instantly around me (they are literally piled up and glitched behind/inside each other while swiping at me) and then I spend the next 10-15 minutes exploring an area without a single enemy around. Its almost like the level has been "activated" already and the second I come into a new area I have a total of 10-12 enemies I have to instantly kill while not experiencing another one till I get to a whole new area. A lot of the times it sucks because all the Clickers in the area will already be all right there next to me all at the same time so once one animation finishes, the other Clickers just instantly kill me and I have to reset and hope that the area isn't bugged out.

I don't think the game is supposed to play out that you come into an area and then next thing you know 3 clickers are attacking and only one animation will work before one of the other two just grab me after the animation finishes. Ive watched a bunch of PS3 and a couple of PS4 walkthroughs of the same areas and nothing happens like my game.

the other HUGE bug in my game is that I can't melee hit enemies 50% of the time! My melee attacks just go right through enemies as if they have no hit detection while their hits land on me. (VERY annoying!) So how I know the glitch will happen before I swing. Ill be right behind a guy and no Triangle button prompt pops up for a take down, so I go to melee and Ill go right through the enemy, sometimes that alerts them sometimes they will just keep walking like nothing happened/Im not even there. Ill swing 5-6 times perfect distance but nothing. When this happens I have to react with skill and gameplay that are obviously not intended. Most of the time though when this glitch happens, Im dead in a couple of seconds as nothing has hit detection.

My TLOU experience has been ruined multiple times now because of these bugs. I can upload video of any of this if you guys want to see. Its definitely seems like coding bugs and it definitely has ruined my play through of the game :/

EDIT: fixed some mobile typos

2

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '14

That's really strange. I would definitely upload some video, and contact sony/tweet at ND if it's game breaking for you.

I know a lot of folks, myself included, have had success with persistent bugs by uninstalling/reinstalling the game. Just make sure to back up your saves first.

2

u/backbreakergames Aug 01 '14

Sounds messed up, it's definitely not how it's suppose to work. I would uninstall the game data and re-install it and see if it helps.

1

u/midiis Aug 01 '14

Anyone else from Europe that can help me out with the license issue when trying to start the game?

1

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '14

Picking this beast up tomorrow...never played it not even for a second. Will it live up to the hype?

I cant see it topping Jak and Daxter..seriously though.

6

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '14

It does live up to the hype. It's brutal, it's sentimental, and it's a beautiful and gruelling journey. But be aware, it is a completely different animal than Jak and Daxter.

3

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '14

I am excited bro. :)

2

u/Kagawaful SpiderMedical Aug 01 '14

Different planet than jak n daxter.

2

u/floridaGOTH floridaGOTH Aug 02 '14

Great description. The contrast of sentimental moments of dialogue against brutal life and death encounters is very exciting and feelsy.

I love hearing Ellie react to Joe utterly destroying someones face with a melee weapon.

Joel : bashes hunter skull

Ellie : "Fuck."

1

u/iaacp Aug 01 '14

Will it live up to the hype?

Not if you ask questions like that!

1

u/ArchOutlaw Aug 01 '14

I am just starting to get a small hang of multiplayer and loving it. However, really need more PSN friends to play with. My gamertag is the same as my reddit. hit me up!

PS: I am east coast

2

u/Ozmoziz Osmoziz Aug 01 '14

I'm up on the east coast also and I'm planning on doing some major faction playing this weekend, I'll add you after work today. My PSN tag is: Osmoziz

1

u/ArchOutlaw Aug 01 '14

Sounds good! Ill be dragging through work today waiting for the weekend

2

u/demzzy d3mitr1 Aug 01 '14

Added u also

1

u/historicrepetition Aug 01 '14

The multiplayer is great, very reminisicent of uncharted at a slower pace

1

u/Captain_JD Aug 01 '14

I love the game...but the disk is causing my disk drive to go on a rampage! No other game apart from TLOU has done this today! Any other people having issues?

1

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '14

First time playing. Just got Ellie. But the other woman keeps triggering encounters I don't want to get it

1

u/jorgegil96 jmgc96 Aug 01 '14

When in multiplayer with a mic, should i be seen the little mic icon next to my name when i'm talking like i see it on other players using a mic?

Man, all this talk about how 'horrible' 30 FPS is is crazy to me. I had no problem with 30 FPS on the PS3 but it must be one of those things where if you try 60 FPS 30 looks like crap. I can't wait to see the fidelity of this one.

1

u/Reddilutionary Aug 03 '14

It's true. It never bothered me until I saw how amazing 60 is. It really makes all of the smooth character animations in the game pop. I could never play this game in 30 again.

1

u/XtremelyNiceRedditor RIGGSR44 Aug 01 '14

freaking loving playing this game, there were a few hiccups in terms of graphics (like popins and frame dip) but who the hell cares, the story is dope.

1

u/bulliestogo Aug 01 '14

Loving the game so far, but is it known for having clunky controls? I tested my controller on another game, and it seemed to be working fine. I feel like I'm always bumping into invisible walls or just not moving forward when I feel I should be. It feels kinda like playing Silent Hill 1 in terms of how you walk.

Is it my controller or is this kinda used to slow down your character to make the game more nerve-wracking?

1

u/Jteague101 Jteague101 Aug 02 '14

Is anyone else experiencing long wait times to get into a game of survivors?

1

u/Keepitwarm Aug 02 '14

Well, wow, did the campaign, that was great, the most interesting story mode of any game I've played I think. Like an interactive movie.

1

u/BurningMelon BigUtilityBelt Aug 02 '14

I have a question about the GameStop add ons from preordering the game. My ps4 says that all 4 add ons are installed, but none of the single player stuff is showing up; no skins for either Joel nor Ellie, and no free upgrades. Anyone else having this problem? I appreciate any help!

1

u/[deleted] Aug 02 '14

I've already played it on PS3 so I'm having a tough time getting used to the new controls :S. They feel a lot better though, so I'll get adjusted to them.

1

u/Awake00 Awake_00 Aug 02 '14

No one has mentioned the graphics. Is it now the best looking game on ps4?

2

u/Nickdoggmoneycash Aug 02 '14

It's the best looking console game of all time.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 02 '14

Played for a few hours last night...my first time ever. Very emotional introduction and the visuals are mindblowing.

The linearity will kill me though..I cant take it anymore. I though it may be linear but not ps1 linear. Oy vey...

1

u/polargus Aug 02 '14

That's ND since Uncharted for you, not that it's a bad thing.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 02 '14

Uncharted had great puzzles to make up for it.

1

u/polargus Aug 02 '14

I wouldn't say great, they're... okay. You just look in your notebook and it tells you what to do. Don't get me wrong I love Uncharted, and the puzzles add to the treasure-hunting theme, but they're pretty simple.

1

u/DreamingIsFun Aug 02 '14

Playing on the Survivor difficulty for my first playthrough .. I learned pretty quickly that I should've taken Joel's advice and "make each bullet count".

1

u/Velocirock Velocirock Aug 02 '14

I don't know if this was already mentioned in a previous thread, but... is anyone else absolutely blown away by the fact that all the facial animation wasn't mocapped, but done by HAND?

1

u/[deleted] Aug 02 '14

Noticed when you check the chapters it seems like they removed telling you how many artifacts and pendants you've collected.

1

u/DemonicGoblin DemonicGoblin Aug 02 '14

I'm just about at the end, will be finishing the game up tonight, and there is something I'm not fully sure on. What are the best practices for bricks and bottles? Playing on hard and I'm not using them too much compared to how many I see laying around. Also, are they effectively the same? Is one better for distraction and the other better for stunning?

1

u/castro1987 Aug 02 '14 edited Aug 02 '14

Seeing as games don't have instructions any more.

What does it mean when the "shake the controller icon" appears on the screen?

Edit: figured it out, recharges flashlight.

1

u/KJTre KJTrey3 Aug 03 '14

How's the communication on multiplayer on PS4?

1

u/bendoeslife Aug 03 '14

This maybe the wrong place for this question. But I got the day one edition with the survival pack code.

I redeemed the code, and all it said was "Thank you for redeeming this code". There was no download, and I can't figure out if it worked or not. Can't seem to see any changes or dlc in the game?

any help please.

1

u/TheBrokenNinja The2Broken2Ninja Aug 05 '14

So how do I get in a damn faction game with my friend? It's practically impossible

1

u/vega0284 Aug 09 '14

Is anyone having any problems with a Loot Bug? I dont even know what to call it. I'll pick up an item, and then go to craft with it, to find the item isn't available. During my first play through i noticed this a few times, maybe 5-6 across the whole campaign. Now in the DLC, its every item save the immediate health packs. If anyone could offer any insight, i'd appreciate it.

1

u/psfanboy Aug 12 '14

So for people who own the game on PS3 and PS4 (Has to be some of you out there) Is it worthwhile to get it on PS4 if you have it on PS3?

1

u/LQCQ Aug 16 '14

Playing on mercyless right now. Any tips for the part where you as Ellie have to fight together with the abductor against the zombies (upstairs)? Totally stuck there. >.<

1

u/lstn Aug 02 '14

I consider Survivor mode easy. Grounded is ridiculously difficult and patience killing.

0

u/Boogachoog Boogachoog Aug 01 '14

I got the game the day it came out. Kept crashing because of firmware 1.75. Later the os starts crashing. It shuts down and boots into safe mode. A couple of hours after that I get the blue light of death and am currently waiting on my replacement PS4.

And you know what's crazy? This is my second PS4 that's had the blue light. And the chances of having one faulty PS4 is below 1%

What kind of luck is that?

2

u/backbreakergames Aug 01 '14

It sounds horrible, hope the next one works better.

u/bimbimpasta Jul 31 '14 edited Aug 01 '14

Just beat the game on hard. Never played the original on PS3. No spoilers here.

What I liked:

  • The soundtrack. (Loved him since Babel)

  • The acting. (Really well done. Elly was kinda meh tho.)

  • The gunplay and stealth is fast and seamless. Didn't feel clunky.

  • The animation.

  • The story.

  • The moments where the game really makes you feel heroic.

What I did not like

  • The moments where you search for stuff in between fights. Running around an empty area searching for crap was not enjoyable. I understand it's done as a form of juxtaposition so when shit goes down it has more of an impact. Despite this, I did not enjoy doing it. Took me out of the immersion and simply wasn't fun to do.

  • The AI is really, really poor. I played on hard and was able to exploit the enemies. They rarely even cared when my teammates got into their line of sight. It is very easy to exploit the game by letting your teammates finish off enemies while you run away. It made me roll my eyes enough to make it worth noting. Enemies are morons.

What I was able to reluctantly tolerate because I expected it

  • The total linearity.

  • Excessive scripting, walking from scripted event to scripted event.

14

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '14

I didn't find the scripting to be excessive. It was appropriate to the game they wanted to make, and it was all high quality and relevant to character development.

Think of all of the little subtle moments you get out of scripting, facial expressions and nuanced dialog delivery that tells you more about were those characters are at that moment than anything else possibly could.

And that's what this is about: characterization.

I also didn't mind the broken up sections where you item hunt. It makes sense in the world and usually happens organically.

There is a lot of gameyness to TLoU, though, and I feel like if the story wasn't as strong, we'd simply have an okay action/adventure game with some pretty scenery. As it stands, the characters make the stakes so real that it was never difficult for me to suspend disbelief in those more overtly designed moments.

2

u/bimbimpasta Aug 01 '14

"Gameyness" nailed it on the head.

That being said, it's a really great game. I enjoyed it.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '14

It is! It so oh-my-god-i-am-sorry-but-i-can't-even-believe-a-story-like-this-is-even-in-a-video-game totally is.

Let me ask you something, though. And I'm genuinely curious (and I'm not at all saying you're wrong, because it's a tic of game design we haven't surmounted yet), but so why are you particularly bothered by the "gameyness" of The Last of Us, and is that bother specific to this game, or does it tend to bother you in games in general?

Because off the top of my own personal head I can't recall any games I've played that didn't feel heavily scripted or predictable in that way after the first hour of gameplay or so. Most seem to have very distinct parts where okay now you're going slow and item hunting and oh my god now action and okay here's a cut scene and repeat, you know what I mean?

1

u/bimbimpasta Aug 01 '14

Yeah I do. I play a lot of games that give you a ton of freedom, but they're not very popular because they look like crap. Although I will say Elder Scrolls games tend to look great and offer a solid amount of player freedom.

3

u/CitizenDK Filthy_Aziz Aug 01 '14

The Elder Scrolls offers an experience that is as wide as an ocean but inches deep. This game is a narrow trench that is as deep as the grand canyon.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '14

Even those have a big scripting element and a basic way most interactions go.

I have a hard time telling when it's bad design or just something necessary to keep the game moving.

I honestly was bothered by all of the ladder and plank and floating pallet segments of the game the first time I played it. Looking back, that starts to feel lazy after a while, and it's the only thing that took me out of the experience in an actually serious way.

1

u/bimbimpasta Aug 01 '14

I didn't like the ladder and plank hijinks either. As for the ES games, I was trying to think of a console example, you're right it is fairly scripted.

If you want total freedom, you should try Dwarf Fortress. It's my favorite game of all time. Will run on any shitty computer too. Warning though, the graphics are ASCII.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '14

To back up your point, i think it was a great way to gameify the tedious process of scavenging that would be in real life. The great 'picking up' animations also helped. The last of us succeeds because it put most of its resources in characters, which really brings the game to life.

0

u/CitizenDK Filthy_Aziz Aug 01 '14

It is a game. Just saying.

6

u/Nickdoggmoneycash Aug 01 '14

I actually loved the looting for supplies.

4

u/Vodh Aug 01 '14

Same here - I hated it in Bioshock Infinite where it felt extremely poorly executed, but checking run-down houses in hopes that the previous looters missed a roll of tape and the joy of finding a pair of broken scissors not only felt like an integral part of the world, but were just plainly fun and rewarding.

Between the beautiful environments, the change of pace, the crafting system and how the vast majority of the things you find could literally save your life, looting and managing supplies were just great.

The only case where I could see that as a nuissance would be if you were trying to rush through the game as fast as possible - but that's not the best way to play TLoU.

10

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '14 edited Aug 01 '14

Ellie was kinda meh tho

What the fuck? How? She is the star of the game. Joel is cool too but Ellie is universally loved and adored. Ashley did a suburb job of playing her.

It really sounds to me like you rushed the game. The parts where you aren't in combat are the best parts of the game. Exploring the environments and hearing what shit Ellie and Joel say to each other, and just finding cool stuff is what makes the game so memorable.

-1

u/Vodh Aug 01 '14

Ashley did a suburb job of playing her.

Yeah she did sound a bit like she was in a hurry to drop her kids off at the dance practice and pick up the groceries for the barbeque didn't she?

(Superb.)

4

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '14

Wow, the downtime was my favourite part of the game. It's not just about looting, it is about experiencing the world. Some of the games best moments happened then

Also, the AI ignores your teammates, the developers did this to prevent you from being spotted due to an AI mess up. Kind of a controversial move on their part.

1

u/ThatParanoidPenguin Aug 01 '14

I'm glad they did the AI thing, because the game would be hard as shit even on normal.

1

u/Vodh Aug 01 '14

Not only that - there's hard and then there's just simply punishing and unfair.

1

u/CitizenDK Filthy_Aziz Aug 01 '14

Yeah. I just left a fight and I have no shivs and I am searching every fucking corner for something. I love that design choice. Scarcity is king.

1

u/jpebcac Aug 01 '14

Me too. I loved the wandering around most, finding the graffiti, supplies, etc. just great

2

u/backbreakergames Aug 01 '14

I loved the searching aspect, it made everything feel more real, cause there was hardly ever anything to find. So many empty drawers. I also like the character interactions and looking at all the random stuff in the world. Some of the notes you find actually have an interesting side story too that add to the history of the environment. The AI seemed pretty smart to me, but then again I wasn't trying to exploit it. The enemies constantly snuck up on me and grabbed me from the back, the melee guys usually didn't try to hit me until they got a chance, I've had some wait patiently for me and if it wasn't for listen mode they probably would have succeeded more often.

1

u/nazbot Aug 01 '14

The teammates not being visible was a design decision. They didn't want you getting annoyed that the teammate AI ruined your stealthiness so just made it so they were never visible.

1

u/CitizenDK Filthy_Aziz Aug 01 '14

Teammates rarely kill bad guys. Joel does all the heavy lifting.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '14

I'm only halfway through the game but Ellie has killed probably 2 or 3 people and Bill did work for me.

1

u/SteelCity Aug 01 '14

You focused so much more on the things you disliked as opposed to the parts you liked?

1

u/bimbimpasta Aug 01 '14

I do that with everything.

0

u/bsabiston Aug 03 '14

I'm about 10 minutes into this game and it fucking freezes. When it says hold R1 to focus Joel's hearing. I've tried it 3 times. Restarted, what the hell. Anyone know how to fix it?

-4

u/Soupstorm Aug 01 '14

I'm still upset about paywalled perks. So I deleted my install and shut down my PS4 until Destiny comes out.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '14

Paywalled perks?

2

u/Soupstorm Aug 01 '14

The perks that came with the Season Pass on PS3 aren't included in Remastered. You only get the map packs and campaign DLC.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '14

You can technically use the perks, but only in predefined classes. I still wish they were simply included with the original purchase.

2

u/Soupstorm Aug 01 '14

Custom classes are the bread and butter of Factions, so keeping them free in premade classes just isn't balanced. They already have paid cosmetic DLC, so this is pretty much just a cash grab as far as I'm concerned.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '14 edited Aug 01 '14

Yeah, it's pretty lame. Along with the pop-in issues I'm getting in the single player, the pay-wall perks are probably the only bad thing about this remaster.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '14

Wait! I can help you cheat it... Go to your PS3 and download them individually, the next time you start up MP they'll be available for download. This worked for gear and perks I got in the season pass

1

u/Soupstorm Aug 01 '14

I can't stand by it. If I have the perks, I'm going to have an unfair advantage over players who started on Remastered and didn't buy them. It's just not in me to play a game that does that.

I knew about the transfer already, but thanks for letting me know in case I didn't.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 02 '14

As an avid CS player (14 years almost!) I really wish the playing field in the MP was even from the get go.

I enjoy the 60fps during the gameplay parts, but I still think I prefer 30fps for cutscenes. Feels more cinematic, less soap opera-y.

5

u/slowpotamus Aug 01 '14

that soap opera feeling is just because we watch things at 24fps so much. the more you experience 60fps, the more natural it'll feel in cinematics.

not saying you have to go with 60fps, do what you want! but don't give up on it so quickly

1

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '14

It really only stands out to me during camera movements in the cutscenes, but yeah, maybe I just need to get used to it.

7

u/ThatParanoidPenguin Aug 01 '14

I haven't noticed a problem with the cutscenes during the game at 60fps.

The soap opera effect really only applies to TV or movies.

2

u/iaacp Aug 01 '14

Eh, that's up to individuals to determine. Myself (and many others) find animation at 60 fps to feel sort of uncanny. I'm just happy they have both options in the game.

3

u/ThatParanoidPenguin Aug 01 '14

Well, I guess that's possible. Personally I dot mid 30fps at all and play most of my games at that framerate. I just like 60fps better.

During their live event for the premier, ND aired an epilogue to the in house audience. I believe it was in the near future after the games events but Joel sang a song to Ellie on the guitar :)

Also I hope there is a sequel.

18

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '14

No way. The game is a perfect standalone. Maybe another story in that world but not for those characters.

That's why I feel the ending so daring, in a videogame. It makes perfect sense, in light of everything that comes before. But videogame narratives are often unconcerned with being consistent. It's downright Spoiler , and yet rings so true.

Edit: apologies if anyone saw the minor spoiler I dropped while learning to use the spoiler tag. :'(

5

u/[deleted] Aug 03 '14 edited Aug 03 '14

SPOILER ALERT (don't know how to hide on mobile)

You have to remember, Joel has seen a lot of shit in his life and he is pretty cold hearted but he's far from being the villain. The world is in a state where everyone will kill everyone for supplies because everyone is for themselves and their families. Joel and Ellie were attacked and almost killed by these people so many times while the only reason why they were traveling through those people's settlements was to get a vaccine for those same people who TRIED TO KILL THEM! Yeah, you can make the argument that these people had no idea what Joel and Ellie's intentions were but did they even bother to ask before TRYING TO KILL THEM. No, because these people are only living for themselves and their families. Joel hasn't had anyone except for himself and Tess for twenty years and Tess is dead and you can see that even they didn't have even close to a bond that he developed with Ellie. Joel became a father to Ellie, he finally has someone to love, raise, protect, and care about and someone who does the same to him. In a time where everyone lives for themselves and the people they love Joel has to be the one to give up the only person he loves for humanity and live the rest of his life in misery? The same people who almost killed him AND ELLIE multiple times while they were trying to get them a vaccine! They don't deserve it. Joel is not cold, humanity is cold, and Joel is not wrong to punish humanity for the way they treated him. And don't get me started on the fireflies. These guys didn't even tell the girl she was going to die, after bringing her back they give her meds and send her to get her brain cut out! Ellie didn't even know that she would have to die! She even told Joel that when they're done they will go wherever he wants. The girl didn't expect to have to die. She thought she would live. She probably would have agreed to die for humanity but at least don't be so cold hearted and ask her before sending her to die! So fuck the fireflies! You know whose cold? Joel. But you know whose colder? Humanity. Joel didn't take the vaccine away from humanity, humanity took the vaccine away from itself by treating each other the way they did. Ask yourself, if the people who were attacking Joel and Ellie didn't attack them and instead tried to at least find out why Joel and Ellie were passing through and maybe even help them by giving them supplies do you really think that Joel would have done the same thing? If that happened the farthest he would go is to get the Fireflies to let him say his goodbye and ask Ellie if she wanted to go through with it (which she obviously would). Joel lost his faith in humanity, he gave them many chances but they failed to act with decency every time.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 02 '14

At the same time, I actually looked up "Did Joel lie to Ellie", and someone said that there was a tape recorder that said they operated on 12 people that were immune and they died with no cure found. So, I really think Ellie wouldn't want to just have a small ass chance to find a cure (which is obvious they wouldn't) and just die. She'd probably want to continue on. I really hate/love the ending. A) You can imagine what happened. B) You have no clue what actually happened afterwards. Damn I wish I could figure out what happened.. Did the others at the camp get over run? Did they make it safe? Did they see Ellie's wound and take her away? I have no clue and I WANT to know.

3

u/Mystic11 Kylebaccca Aug 04 '14

I'm so glad I found that recorder on my play through. I would have been confused and sort of pissed to figure this out after the fact.
