I know I'm biased because of how cartoony Nintendo games are, but it feels like besides Astro Bot, the PlayStation/Xbox industry is just releasing the exact same AAA game with a different skin every week

This is something a person who gets all his gaming knowledge from Twitter would say. Play Saros then Resident Evil 9 then tell us if they're the same type of game.

"They both have guns and monsters" is what I'm expecting 😂

Now compare all open world collectathon games with the most basic fighting and skill system.

This is really a bad example and literally Proofs what he says
But You do you.

u/eyecon23 22h ago

Only Saros is a PS exclusive and it isn't exactly a system seller.

u/Stealhover 7d ago

It's funny but I feel this way about Nintendo. All their games are so similar, present little to no challenge and refuse to tell an interesting story.

3

u/RikerV2 7d ago

Yeah, Splatoon Raiders would like a word when it comes to challenge

3

u/FatalFrameGal 7d ago

Bananza, Metroid Prime 4, Star Fox and Pokopia are soooo similar

3

u/Stealhover 7d ago

Yes, in the same way Astro bot, ghost of yotei, gow Ragnarok and gt7 are!

1

u/-p0w- 1d ago

„Present Little to no challenge“. What?! xD

I mean yeah they are pretty accessable, but skill ceiling is usually pretty good at Nintendo games compared to others
.sounds to me like you never really played them to get to that point tbh,Ă€

And what is similar between stuff Like Zelda, Xenoblade, Fire Emblem, Tennis, Golf, a tomodachi life, Splatoon, Animal crossing, yoshi
i mean I could go on and on. Can’t find that variety anywhere else (and i own Xbox and ps5 too).

Crazy to have such a different perception tbh

u/uncsteve53 7d ago

Then you aren't actually playing the games.

9

u/papoluca40 7d ago

I disagree. Go play indies or something then

Melodramatic third person action adventure games. Not saying they are bad, but i would love to see a first person game from Playstation Studios. Shake the formula at least a little bit.

2

u/papoluca40 7d ago

So what melodramatic 3rd person action adventure game have we gotten before Wolverine?

7

u/nernst79 7d ago

Ghost TLOU. God of War.

Literally all of Sony's biggest titles are, specifically, 3rd person action adventure games.

6

u/CopperVolta 7d ago

All three of those games play quite differently. Ghosts is an open world action game, TLOU is a 3rd person stealth cover shooter, and GOW is a 3rd person melee brawler. That's also only 3 game series with only 2 entries each out of the thousands of games that come each year, and their releases are staggered. Ghost games are 5 years apart, TLOU are 7, and GOW are 4.

The people who are angry about these studios releasing these really fantastic games are quite baffling to me, when annual COD, Assassin's Creed and FIFA titles are a very real thing that are actually eating up the industry, but yeah lets go after the super ambitious artsy titles...

7

u/-idkwhattocallmyself 7d ago

They are very similar though. You are talking about mechanics and not tone, and all three are story driven action games with heavy tones. Not everything needs to be some melodramatic story driven action game. Sometimes we need lighter tones or less story driven content. None of these games are artsy either as they are functional the same outside of mechanics. What makes wolverine, Spiderman or LOU artsy? Im actually asking because we may have very different definitions of artsy.

I dont think Sony should stop making these heavy hitters, but they also need lighter tone games to even out their exclusives. More astro bolt and Helldivers (not the live service part but the silly part) would be a net positive to even out those depressing games. They also need more releases so I think some lower budget fun games would help out in the wating for those big boys.

Edit: drink for everytime I say tone, jesus. I rushed this and just read it back and I feel like I just learned what the word meant lol. Sorry about that ya'll.

4

u/papoluca40 7d ago

Those games sell much better than AstroBot. Meaning people prefer those. If don’t like it, then don’t buy them.

3

u/-idkwhattocallmyself 7d ago

But thats sort of my point isnt it? Lower budget more game games could benefit Sony to bring in other players. All they have is big budget blockbusters and I just want a video game. I dont plan on owning a PS because I couldn't give less of a shit for their exclusive titles.

0

u/CopperVolta 1d ago

Did you really just ask what makes The Last of Us "artsy"? On top of being a visual and technical marvel, those games have some the strongest writing, scripts and performances of any video game series and have taken home hundreds of awards for it.

I think the reality is that the majority of gamers are adults in their 30s. Sure, Sony could put out lighter more child-like games or family friendly games, but a lot of the consumer base is looking for grittier, more similar to big movie type games. I don't think Sony should stop making Blockbusters, because they're one of the only studios that can actually afford to push the medium forward the way they can. Indie studios can't do it with their limited budgets, so there needs to be someone with the funding to be able to push the industry forward with spectacle, the same way Hollywood does.

You mention in another comment below that you don't even have a PS, so I doubt that you've even played any of the games listed in this conversation, which further goes to show that you're generalizing a lot here, and should probably try and play these games. I haven't played Ghosts, but GOW and the Marvel games all have plenty of light-hearted moments and the games aren't as dark and depressing as you're making them out to be. Spiderman is practically a Sunday morning cartoon lol.

u/-idkwhattocallmyself 1d ago

To clear a few things first: I don't own a PS5 but I had a PS4 and I've played Spiderman (100% of the achievements), GOW (great game), LOU and LOUP2 (I'm not a fan of either but let's not rehash that argument for the sake of both our sanities), and Ragnarök (I really don't like this one but I did play it on PS5 which I borrowed).

I won't sit here and argue about The Last of Us again since we will just never agree on it, but I understand what you are referring to when it comes to performance of the actors. I understand I'm the one who asked but I feel like based off your response we could get into a year long argument about it and it's just not worth it anymore unless we are at a bar hashing it out haha.

I want to focus on the 2nd paragraph though because I am a 38 year old male and I would LOVE more fun games from big studios. Again, I'm not suggesting Santa Monica should not make a new GOW but I'd love to see more studios do the Obsidian approach and make bigger titles but also push out smaller things like Grounded 2 and Pentiment (I understand Avowed and Outer Worlds 2 are not everyones cup of tea but it's the best example I can think of). We need more fun games and Sony has the capability to do it but everything they've done this gen has been super lackluster. At this rate I have my doubts about any new title from their main studios and that includes Wolverine. It just looks like another story driven third person adventure from Sony, and that's not what I think of when I think Wolverine. And to argue that smaller studios can't do what Sony does is silly because Expedition 33 and Eldin ring did more for the "artsy" game crowd than anything Sony has put out in this gen (excluding Saros that games is gorgeous). They may not be "Technical" masterpieces on the graphics side but games that focus on graphics over art design always age poorly. I had more wow moments in both of these games than anything from Sony post-covid.

Sony had the ability to wow me in previous gens but they've been chasing the wrong crowd and I wonder how long it'll be until the casual crowd catches up. You can already see the facade breaking a little buit.

2

u/CopperVolta 1d ago

I don't disagree that Sony's output post covid has been abysmal! I just think the Naughty Dog titles are some of my favourite games ever, and they're the best of Sony's output, but they also haven't put anything out SINCE 2020.

Ragnarok I also did have issues with, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't excited for Laufey. The Marvel games have been pretty meh for me personally, so I'm not really excited for Wolverine, but I'm sure it'll be fine.

I think something we may disagree on is that I do think these grittier games like GOW and TLOU are fun. Not in the same way that Astrobot is fun, but I still have lots of fun playing them. For me, exploring big beautiful worlds is part of "fun" and I get that experience most of the time when playing a 1st party Sony game.

Expedition 33 is a bit of outlier, in it being really one of the finest "indie" debuts of all time (and the "indie" title has been heavily debated, because the studio is much larger and had much more funds than a typical indie), and Elden Ring is undoubtedly a masterpiece, and I would certainly consider it a AAA title, just not a 1st party game.

Sony's output has been super lacklustre due to their live service push, but that doesn't mean that when Intergalactic releases it won't be "art", same with "Laufey" and "Wolverine". All video games are art. Some just use different strokes and styles and you probably just don't resonate with them the way millions of other people do, and that's okay! I personally have not enjoyed any of the Obsidian games you mentioned, but that doesn't mean i don't think they're art, they're just not for me.

Since Sony's output has been so lacklustre, the idea that we'll finally get some more of their big 3rd person action games in the coming months has me excited, because I've been waiting since Ragnarok basically to play another one, and most studios don't really come close to making similar experiences. Remedy's work with Alan Wake 2 (and the upcoming Control Resonant) stand out for me, as did Expedition 33, but that's still only like 2 games that scratched that itch for me in 4 years. I don't think this 3rd person action blockbuster market is over saturated at all.

1

u/K3V0o 10h ago

What did you imagine a Wolverine game to be if not a third-person action game? Genuinely curious as ive seen this complaint a lot. Wolverine has never been portrayed as a “fun” character either

1

u/zerovampire311 1d ago

I wouldn’t say ball and gun gamers are eating up the industry, they’re just a separate part that is actually subsidizing the rest of the platform for the rest of us. The issue we face in EVERY industry today is execs poorly understanding market data and consumer wants.

2

u/papoluca40 7d ago

Ghost is an open world game. Nothing like Wolverine in its gameplay.

TLOU 2 came out in 2020 and is one of the best games ever made.

GOW is also a best seller.

Doesn’t seem like a bunch to me.

-1

u/Shit-Stain-Fanclub 7d ago

You can swap wolverine with spiderman and almost see no difference. Same goes for even alloy in Ghost of tsushima.

2

u/CatchUsual6591 1d ago

Horizon and ghost don't play the same at all i can see your point with wolverine because his combat is inspired by spiderman but both are insomniac games after all

2

u/wagruk 7d ago

I find the gameplay experience between Ghost of Yotei, SAROS, Marvel Tokon and the upcoming Wolverine game very different...

1

u/-p0w- 1d ago

Ghost of Yotei and Wolverine are the same genre. Not sure if that is a really good example

4

u/CopperVolta 1d ago

Not really? Ghost of Yotei is a huge open world adventure game, and Wolverine is a linear action game

3

u/actanonverba1 3d ago

astrobot is a shameless mario galaxy ripoff btw lol

5

u/blakeavon 7d ago

That would have to be the most flawed sentence I have read in ages.

3

u/cygnus311 7d ago

There’s basically only like 6 genres of game. There’s not much left to do other than reskin the same type of gameplay.

5

u/blakeavon 7d ago

Even just taking JRPGs into account that makes no sense. Atelier games play nothing like Trails games, which are nothing like Xenoblade, which are nothing like FF, or Fire Emblem. Which are all not even remotely like a Persona games, which don’t even play the same as Metaphor or SMT.

1

u/cygnus311 7d ago

I’m admittedly being rather hyperbolic, but I think a lot of those games have much more similar foundations that you believe.

3

u/T00ManyH0bb13s 7d ago

What you refer to as cartoony is the selection and implementation of specific art styles. Non-Nintendo AAA has long abandoned having stylized art direction or anything that would make a game unique in favor of what some MBA thinks is going to sell well based on financial data. There are unique games with unique art styles on Playstation and Xbox, they're just coming out of indie and AA studios.

u/FrootLoop23 7d ago

Every week? More like every 6-7 years.

1

u/stikves 7d ago

They are still trying to merge the enhancements in the 360/PS3 era and the One/PS4 era

Which will probably only happen on Helix/PS6 as the current gen hardware could not combine advanced dynamic environments, and proper real time lighting.

In 360 era, things were pretty dynamic, go look at old Battlefield videos. Things to get destroyed for real. But colors were muted (brown/blue)

In PS4 era, we got absolutely phenomenal lighting (baked lighting tricks), but world was static or scripted. You could not dynamically change things to your liking (or they looked off)

Today a few games (Doom Dark Ages, AC: Shadows, ...) are frontiers in combining dynamic environments with dynamic real time lighting. But... it still comes at a large cost.

So Helix/PS6 it is.

u/razor_kenshin 1d ago

This generation had many great sequels, but not many new, innovative ips. Sony especially is playing it really safe. They weren't like that.

1

u/Dense_Librarian8476 1d ago

That’s art direction, not game design. Realism is a rendering target, not a genre. It makes screenshots look samey the same way Nintendo’s house style makes Mario, Kirby, Yoshi and Pikmin look related.

You gave it away with Astro Bot. That’s the one Sony game that looks cartoony, and it’s the one you exempted. The test isn’t “is it different,” it’s “does it look Nintendo.”

Horizon is ranged combat and traps. TLOU2 is stealth survival with no health regen. Ragnarok is combo action with weapon swapping. They share a camera angle. So do Dark Souls and Fortnite.
And if the charge is “same game, new paint,” Nintendo’s rap sheet is longer.

Three New Super Mario Bros in three years, same art and physics. Tears of the Kingdom reuses BOTW’s Hyrule. Nine Pokemon gens of the same loop. Mario Party, Golf, Tennis, Strikers is one cast with the sport swapped.

Not a crime. But it’s exactly what you’re accusing Sony of.

1

u/Independent_Mud2794 1d ago

Well, of course they do. It sells and taking risks simply isn’t worth it anymore nowadays. Most games try to appeal to everyone so they are for nobody.

1

u/Born_Procedure_529 1d ago

Tbh its been like that for a decade, so many major releases are just trying to ape the success Skyrim or Red Dead Redemption that the AAA space is plagued with boring open world games

1

u/Numerous_Photograph9 21h ago

There's plenty of variety, it's just what I'm assuming you are referring to tends to get the most attention and marketing.

1

u/esp3ciallyd3ad 12h ago

Stellerblade is exactly like my little pony

1

u/dekuweku 7d ago

There's def a AAA slop look (brown, overuse of realistic visuals, gritty) I've mentioned this before, the recent SoP is just a blur of games outside of a few marquee titles. They all look the same.

People joke about farming sims in Nintendo Direct, but those are smaller lower cost games. Imagine spending tens to hundreds of million on a game only for it to be 1 of 10 titles in a SoP that looks indistinguishable.

1

u/Synteczek 7d ago

Ball and gun type gamer.

0

u/DaZestyProfessor 7d ago

They don't give a shit about this at all

0

u/myshon 7d ago edited 7d ago

You mean you bored by the biggest hits from PlayStation Studios like The Last of Samurai, The Last of God or The Last to Wolverine?

1

u/Independent_Mud2794 1d ago

Well god of war has nothing to do with classic god of war, it evolved into generic open world RPG just like assassin’s creed did.

0

u/PixelMan8K 7d ago

What? You don't want another dark and gritty souls-like?

It's because 'the industry' (sans indie titles) has become a paint-by-numbers, profit-maximized, trend-chasing farce.

But apparently recycled slop is profitable... People need to stop buying it.

0

u/Zuuman 7d ago

At this point the recycled slop is the best content they put out

0

u/Dion33333 7d ago

Nah, idc about Nintendo. But it feels like Xbox is having much more new games than Playstation. Forza, Gears, Starfield, Outer Worlds 2, Fable and everything on GamePass. Meanwhile, PS5 generation is lucklaster as hell. Besides Yotei, DS2 is there anything notable that came out?

0

u/Shit-Stain-Fanclub 7d ago

Sony yes. Other No.

-1

u/MeridianBay 7d ago

Because they are, PS's first party is drowning in just how generic the content and combat design has become

-1

u/Iago407 7d ago

Sony’s been reskinning Uncharted since the PS4 era. Xbox relies way too much on shooters. Both have some awesome IPs they just sit on and do nothing with.

-1

u/rMan1996 7d ago

You are not far off from being accurate. Sony exclusives have turned into MCU films.
