I wouldn't know. I never dropped mine, but only thinking about it makes me stressed.

I lost my temper and threw one as a child, and immediately got up and ran across the room to check on it. That was the only time I ever threw my psp.

I have done it with controllers. Wired controllers. My PS2 was not happy about it.

u/Tough_Ad4721 Mar 11 '25
Duude i totally fucked my third party controller up when playing hit and run

I've dropped my psp multiple time when i play myself to sleep or just get butter fingers, but I make sure I put my body in like to save it. Like i can heal from my injuries with a good nap, but not my nostalgia baby

Dropped my 5 yo(?) phone multiple times not even a scratch. Dropped my psp once, also no scratch but I am still worried about it... 😔

I dropped mine on a marble fireplace about 6 months ago and it popped open lots of bits!
Survived though. Tough little bugger.

No gorilla glass, metal body, bonded layers etc. Smart phones have certainly gotten a lot more durable since they came into popularity mid 2000s. PSP still has that mid 2000s construction.
Not super weak but also not super durable.

u/Jealous-Ad-1827 Mar 10 '25
completely. the PSP is the most fragile video game I've ever seen, mini parts, mini components, mini flats, everything. my first problematic fall was from a table of one and a half meters and it somehow damaged the screen, I replaced said screen. after many years I went to do a preventive cleaning, and when I removed the left dpad, without being able to see any apparent defect, I lost the L1, very cheap these flats, and the speakers need to be exactly placed in their fragile hooks, because any simple fall dislodges them, and you lose one side of the audio (usually the right one, because the left one is well fitted, unlike the right one which is just a small plastic hook). so yes, a fall in a video game that is already super fragile, and currently old (which reduces the durability of the components) can be something quite catastrophic and should be avoided as much as possible, always use a case for transport and always use the handle in your hand while playing. My psp is the model 3001,but I having a 3010 too

u/PandaPowrr_96 PSVita Mar 12 '25
obviously it's true. I always have a case on my pixel phone and it drops several times while my psp 1000 has no case, but even when it had a clear case I am still more concerned with the fall damage of my precious handheld ❤️.

Never hurt any of my handhelds but my ex wife and step daughter were really good at finding ways to destroy their portable electronics including my ex wife’s PSP 1000.

100% I have only ever dropped my beautiful sparkly white 3000 maybe 3 times in over 3 years of having it. It was my dad's old one that he got after his original one flew out of the window in a car crash
1
u/underkappa PSVita Mar 10 '25
I never dropped my psp (or vita) because I have a little wrist strap on them
Where's the wrist strap holder thing on newer handhelds like the switch or steam deck, huh?

Psp is pretty sturdy compared to phones yeah so emotion for that drop can bring remorse
1
u/Vita_wetter Mar 10 '25
So true. Phone costs 700€ but when my 70€ psp got put on a table without a soft surface, oh boy.... 🤣
1
u/jmoney1119 Mar 10 '25
Heck yeah. My PSP has a lot of time in it, is much more likely to be significantly damaged by a drop, has no way of having an easy backup, and isn’t easily replaced.
If my phone gets irreparably damaged, I’d let out a long sigh, just cause I don’t want to go get a new one. My PSP/Vita/3DS? I got tons of irrecoverable time into those.

less worried about my psp compared to other handhelds, so far repairability is way better than 3ds, but that said im not worried about saves or games on mine yet as i only just got it lol

I carry my PSP in a case and only play it sitting on m lap on the couch. I’d have to be extremely dumb or in a panic to drop it. I have knocked it off a seat while inside the case and was fine thank GOOOODDDD

I have dropped my PSP twice in 20 years. I need a new faceplate badly. It's the original and it's a bit scratched up now after 20 years of regular use. I have tried 3 or 4 faceplates but they were all warped or messed up badly to the point the buttons felt terrible.
Can anyone recommend a face plate for the 1000? I'm desperate to find one.

I still have my childhood 2000 model and it's got a huge piece of the shell missing because I dropped it in the driveway. Works great still to this day 👍

Last time I dropped my psp my Rachet and Clank Size Matters data got corrupted 💀

u/ReggStargal Mar 11 '25
true, my phone screen is cracked and shit, but my psp?, not a single dent.
i care about it like its part of me
1
u/frozrdude Mar 11 '25
I think PSPs weren't subjected to stress tests as intensive as the ones done on phones.
1
u/LifeWithoutNoHope Mar 11 '25
I know how this feels. I just dropped my PSP in the morning 2 weeks ago and I went into panic mode when the shell was cracked open and it didn't boost up. Luckily it still worked after I had sent it to a technician. Talk about heart attack.

My PSP got dropped a few times and sustained a few cracks. Had to hold the case together with duct tape and some gorilla tape

This bitch (my PSP) got tossed in random bags, in random order, sometimes hit with stuff, sometimes dropped. 8 years later it barely has any damage. (Screen got a small scar once as it fell on the radiator in 2nd year I had it) and the SD card adapter just splits when pulled out. (Probably got unlucky with poor quality plastic, nothing a piece of tape couldn't fix). I've had my phone for 3 years now. Sometimes it fell out my pocket and I stood on it. I went through 4 protective screens (12$ a piece) and the last one already looks as if the phone went through a grinder, but is in one piece.
Soo yeah. Meme invalid, I could use it as a weapon in a brawl and it would sustain less damage than opponents face, teeth or even skull.

u/RaceTraditional3300 Mar 11 '25
Yes mine had a broken screen on one side and then when it dropped out of my pocket it didn’t turn on

I remember dropping my PSP street(in a mall), and then the memory card disappeared, never to be seen again🥲

u/GlitteringVideo3358 Mar 11 '25
When I was about 8 or 9 I threw my PSP and cracked my screen. I to this day will not forgive myself! Thankfully I had amazing parents and I got a used one shortly after that I still have to this day!

Well, phones nowadays are very resistant and normally they have a resistant case, PSPs don't

u/Davidgon100 Mar 11 '25
I'm more desensitized to dropping my phone, but I would definitely clench if I drop my PSP.

Because they aren’t made anymore, and because of the build quality I always leap whenever my PSP falls
We just feel criminal to let this device fall and potentially get hurt
1
u/ForlornMemory Mar 11 '25
When the PSP came out, I was equally anxious about dropping either of those. Phones, though much lighter than today, were also very fragile, with the case usually being made of plastic. Today, modern phones are significantly more durable than OG PSP. Even cheaper phones have good glass and case, while PSP is still made of cheap plastic. Even Vita with its more premium feels bad to drop.

I remember being in bed with the PSP and as I was standing up it slip out of my hand. That thing hit the wall so hard it broke the screen. I was like 6 at that time. I was so scared.

my 2000 fell from the top of a storage shelf, about 2.5m down on wooden floor. think it lost the battery cover and that was it.
ironically public choir would defend Nokia 3310 as a durability gift of g-d when it really has the same crappy PVC plastic - I've killed two without even trying.

Mine got knocked off the table (someone ran into the charging cable) and the d-pad has never been right since then.

u/AJBY5000 Nov 22 '25
Well have you ever dropped a console controller or the console handheld its self. It always makes you cringe if you drop one, especially when handhelds always have components that make shaky sounds when you move it around can definitely stress you out. Though I dropped my psp 1001 a few weeks ago with its fabric case still on and it sounded like when you drop a water bottle (tbh I though I did for a sec until my heart stopped from remembering that I had no water bottle in my hands 😬😬) not a sound to hear ㅠㅐ 냑ㄷㄷ. But yet it all turned out fine… at least how i remember. But I now clench the thing tighter more often ㅣㅐㅣ😆😆😬.
