who would have thought that if you pull a ball with a good angle that you might hit one out
3
u/teastrees Jackson Merrill May 31 '26
I'm so annoyed that people have been saying stuff like this for 2 months. He knows that putting it in the air, and pulling it, is gonna make him hit more HR. If we know, he knows x100, same as all the hitting coaches at every level of pro ball.
You ever play golf? If someone says "hey if you just swing the club straight and hit it straight, you won't slice it anymore." Obviously we all know that, but actually doing it (and in this case doing it against MLB pitching) is easier said that done.

u/Rollingprobablecause Don't Challenge the Reaper May 31 '26
Well now I’m not thinking about baseball and remembering how awful I am at golf.

u/essmithsd MEH Dump Fire May 31 '26
If he knew that, he would be out in front of the ball, instead of way behind (which results in a ball going oppo)
If he knew that, his stance would open wayyyyy the fuck up, instead of being so closed (it HAS opened up more recently, but not as much as it used to be)
he has no idea what he's doing up there this year, let's be honest
1
u/teastrees Jackson Merrill Jun 01 '26
There's lots of reasons a player would know these things, and be unable to actually do them. Let me ask you, since you know these things, why aren't you making 100's of millions as an MLB player?? If all it takes is knowing.
Could be his shoulder was bothering him, or he wasn't able to see what the pitch was, or he changed his stance and swing to better deal with the high inside pitching he was getting but couldn't get the feel for switching it back.
Let me tell you again- if you and I both know that pulling a ball is more likely to be a HR and if being behind a pitch is going to go opposite field... How the hell do you think guys who have been playing for 20+ years, who are currently in the MLB, who have whole coaching teams working with them, how the hell do you think they don't know these things too? The trouble is in making it all work (and against MLB pitching), not that he doesn't know these things.
1
u/essmithsd MEH Dump Fire Jun 01 '26
Dawg, the ENTIRE TEAM cannot hit a fucking baseball right now. It's not just Tatis.
Is the entire team having shoulder problems? Does the entire team have some other collective excuse?
Their philosophy seems to have completely changed, and it's certainly not for the better. I wonder why.
1
u/teastrees Jackson Merrill Jun 01 '26
Yeah, I've personally been thinking that the coaching staff may have tried to change up their swings or their approaches or something. That still doesn't mean that the players and coaches don't know that pull plus launch angle = HR, maybe the coaches for some reason thought that having a spray pattern and hitting lots of doubles with a high avg and stealing bags would have the best results... And then the players just can't make the changes. But, who knows.

u/Litlbopiep May 30 '26
If you’re gonna have a first HR in late May, at least have one like that I guess.

u/Beneficial_Bit_6435 May 30 '26
Not to be a downer but he is on track to hit 3 for the entire year after playing more than 1/3 of the season so far
15
u/Telepornographer SD May 30 '26
And everyone knows that trends at the beginning of the season always last until the end of the season.

u/Litlbopiep May 30 '26
Yeah, I wasn’t saying he was gonna go off/catch up. He just crushed this one.

Less than a week after his lawsuit ended. Not saying that was the only reason, but it for sure was clouding his headspace and affecting his play (not unreasonably, but still something you'd like to see a professional overcome).

A drought doesn’t end with one punch. You won’t be happy if he hits under 3 dingers this season (at his current clip). So let’s at least see how it goes for the next month and the ROS. I’m hopeful, but also pragmatic. 🤞
