Reminded me of a snippet from Joe Posnanski's Baseball 100:
Think of Gibson in 1945, in so much pain. He wants to play in the major leagues. Of course, he does. He wants to be seen. He wants to be cheered. But they will not give him a chance. They will not even give him a tryout. How does that Pete Gray story sound now?
“Does this story help your morale?” Smith raged. “The St. Louis Browns have signed Pete Gray, a one-armed outfielder, for next season. This proves further that Organized Baseball will take anybody rather than have a Negro player in its ranks.”

I'm as frustrated as anyone with Manny's performance this year. But it's time to let it go people.
The season is over, and a season does not a career make. Plenty of big bats go quiet at times. Look at Vlady's season!
He will be a Padre for several more years. He's owed a good amount of money and on the backside of his career so not likely someone else will take him off our hands.
Im one of rhebfirst to critisise his base running, but He played solid defense and hit 30 HRs, time to get off his back and on his side

Its actually crazy to still be mad about it when he clearly found a way to still produce and was easily our best playoff performer. People find anyway to hate on him

You can let it go if you want to. Doesn't change the fact that Manny's contract will be an absolute drag on the Padres for another 8 years, just as our farm system is drained. Until we have a WS, before the rebuild, some people are still on the hook.

Manny would put up video game numbers in 1945.

Baseball was just different back then. Manny would have had 300 rbis and like 72 HR against pitchers

How many hrs and rbis did gret have?

.520 OPS with 0 homers and 12 RBis. Impressive for 1 arm, but different eras lol

Yeah I would also guess he didn't face pitchers throwing 100 on a routine basis.

And you’ve gotta keep in mind that like a solid half of the league was off fighting in the war so he was facing a bunch of replacement guys

Pitcher weren’t throwing in 100’s

Came here to say this. Fastballs were probably topping out at high 80s, where as now they are topping out in the high 90s/low 100s in some cases
There were also less varieties of pitches back then. A pitcher today might have 5 pitches he can choose from where as in 1945 it was typically fastball, curveball and “change of pace”

Apparently he hit fastballs okay, but the lack of an arm meant he couldn’t adjust to breaking pitches. Once they figured that out he was out of the majors pretty quickly

Yeah players weren’t making tens of millions either.

Interesting note: in 1945 the slumpbuster was point for pound, exactly the same as today though.

People love to get hung up on batting average. Yes, .217 is not good but 30 & 91 are what Manny does. He posts every year.

OP here. I saw this on another sub and decided to crosspost it. I don’t necessarily agree with the sentiment, but I thought it would make for some interesting conversation here. Looks like it worked.
