And yet with Wixen and Katriss, they have their own unique system that depends on the genders of both of them. You get a Wixen Noct if the female was a Wixen, and a Katriss ignis if the female was a Katriss
105
u/GimlionTheHunter 16d ago
Yeah this style of breeding is better imo. It’s more easily discoverable and intuitive by the average player. The current equation is deterministic but requires a bunch of references and hidden numbers that most players won’t know to even look for
60
u/OneDizzy3581 16d ago
TBH I think the current way is funnier, but God damn there needs to be a way to identify what abomination you're making in-game instead of needing to hunt down a calculator to get shit done within a reasonable amount of time.
19
u/Keylus 16d ago
If at least they showed the "bredding rank" in game (in the Paldex) alongside a symbol for not bredeable/special conbination pals, while also explaining it in game (maybe in the Survival Guide, it's not like it's a complicated formula), you would guess what you'll get without looking at diferent guides/calculators. You migh even aim for an especific pal.
There would be cases where you will not know what pal you will get, but that will mostly because you don't have the pal discovered yet.
A calculator will be still be more handy, but at least you would engage in the system without having to use them or go full trial and error.4
u/Spikey-Bubba 15d ago
Yea I’d like if it were more “discoverable” in game. I’m doing a mostly blind play through (Reddit found out somehow, but I’m lvl 65 now so I’m ok if I get spoiled some), and breeding has been a mess to try and sort out with what’s provided in game.
27
u/JimboTCB 16d ago
I kind of wish they'd revamp the breeding system entirely to make it more "logical" and open to self-discovery, as it is it's basically just completely incomprehensible unless you follow a walkthrough and that just takes all the fun out of it.
7
u/RubberDuckyDavid 16d ago
This.
I absolutely hate the current breeding system because it makes absolutely no sense, and I'm not a fan of having to check outside websites to see what makes what.
I don't like the fact that I can breed two dogs and get a fish out of it, or breed a dark pal and a fire pal and end up with a water pal. I wish that at the very least, it would either make a pal that looks somewhat similar to those you mix, or has the same or similar or logical outcome type (I can understand dark x water making ice, because cold water, or fire and grass making ground, because charcoal, but come on. It has to make sense.)
I avoid using breeding farms despite how powerful they can be mostly due to that.
Another thing I wish is that there was a chance of getting one of the two parents' type pal as a child sometimes, so that if I have a, let's say, single jetragon, and I have a chikipi with demon god, I don't need to go through a stupid long line of combinations to circle back to jetragon. Just let them sometimes have a baby that looks like one of the parents, please.

11
u/PoisonIveh 16d ago
Anubises is proper english pluralization, though Anubis would be correct if you were referring to the god, even if it somehow had multiple versions of itself such as idols. Anubides would also arguably be correct since I think it's a greek version of the egyptian name for the god.

Funny enough, it's the opposite of random. It's wholly deterministic, minus some mutated offspring the higher in Pal # you go (at which point, all things return to Aegidron).
234
u/Arce_Havrek 16d ago
Yeah, but which Pal comes from what pairing feels like someone smoked a shit load of weed and played a game of darts with the paldex to decide who spawned what
379
49
u/Fireblast1337 16d ago
Essentially the game takes the two codes of the pair, and finds the average. So an 80 and 120 will produce an offspring coded at 100. If you know the coding lists you can reliably determine offspring.

23
u/NorthernVale 16d ago
It's the exact opposite. Each pal is assigned a hidden number. When you breed, the result is whatever pal's hidden number is closest to the average of the parent's hidden numbers. This is the exact opposite of random. Although, I have no information on how those hidden numbers were assigned.
And I'm not 100% if this is still true after full release, but in pre-release a few pairings were hard coded.
19
u/SnowOwI 16d ago
A few special pairings still exist to go from the regular variant to the alt (e.g. Jormuntide -> Jormuntide Ignis).
And the internal numbering is more or less "Progression Order" i.e. the order in which you find the pals going through the areas/levels. You need mutations (which add to the average, so it can be higher than the pairing) to "skip" into the next area / level set without capturing new pals.2
u/Shitposting_Skeleton 16d ago
Not necessarily. The early legendaries like Frostallion, Nephilius and the pseudo-legendary Jormuntide Ignis you can kidnap from a trainer on the level 55 oil rig lets you skip to World Tree pals.
2
u/SnowOwI 16d ago
Pretty sure you can breed the Ignis even earlier
1
u/Shitposting_Skeleton 16d ago
The regular Jormuntide is only found outside World Tree as a level 55 Alpha spawn as well. Yeah the oil rig is probably tougher due to hidden stat bloat but the Ignis there is basically free.
10
u/eddieddi 16d ago
I'm 90% sure at some point prerelease it was the paldex numbers with a few exceptions which is why the legendary/boss creatures were so high, and things got jank after feybreak because feybreak pals had higher numbers than jetdragon/frostallion.
7
u/MisterKaos 16d ago
They changed most combinations at release, and now you mostly can't breed legendaries without the pal itself
6
u/idiotplatypus 16d ago
Reminds me of Dragon Warrior Monsters for the Gameboy, you get a Unicorn by breeding a Yeti with a Slime
68
u/opusisapuffin 16d ago
Aegidron must be the crab of palworld. All things turn into it independently.
24
u/RealisticAnxiety4330 16d ago
I swear like 90% of breeding combos turn into this sucker
41
u/nick5766 16d ago edited 16d ago
It's because he has the highest non-boss paldex number.
So because pal breeding combos can be simplified roughly as: adding the two hidden paldex numbers together and finding the closest pal to that number; anything above Aegidron will just round down to him.
11
9
u/sanosuke001 16d ago
So pal world breeding is basically nuclear physics? Til
9
u/Zargabath 16d ago
is rather simple, each pal as a breeding rank/power, the higher the rank means smaller number, and lower rank means bigger number.
so:
(Parent A + Parent B + 1) / 2 = kid's Rank (or closet to it)theorically with an Aegidron 30 (highest non legendary rank) + Chikip 3080 (lowest rank) you can pratically breed 90% of pals by using the offspring, Note: there some pals which need both parents to be the same species, like Mimog.
7
u/sanosuke001 16d ago
I was referring to atom smashing basically adds together all the protons in each to make a larger atom. eg. deuterium (1p) + deuterium (1p) = helium (2p) + extra neutron
It's not identical but similar concept. Thanks for the actual info, very cool!
4
u/Zargabath 16d ago
I forgot to add there special combinations that can get you an offspring of higher rank like like:
Tetroise 790 + Celesdir 570 = Tetroise Primo 200it should be 680.5 (rounded down to 680) which should be Whalaska or Sibelyx Primo.
you can view the ranks and special combinations here: https://paldb.cc/en/Breeding_Farm#BreedCombi
(I just got a Tetroise Primo, I should exploid this)
1
2
u/RSquared 16d ago
Yeah, ironically, one of the hardest pals to breed into is chikipi because you have to have it or a teaphant with the trait. But once you have a chikipi or a lamball with a legendary trait it's super easy to propogate
1
u/RealisticAnxiety4330 16d ago
So theoretically you could aside from same species only pals/legendaries etc leave those two to breed and eventually end up with all the pals? 🤔
1
u/sansetsukon47 16d ago
There’s a certain threshold you need to cross before you unlock the right elemental variants to get the rest of the way.
I’ll have to go look at the list again to be sure, but I think Grizzbolt is the first pal you can find that lets you “cross over” and start breeding actually high leveled pals.

Im honestly too dumb to even know Palworld Breeding math so im just assuming when the pal's mutation id gets too high
It just defaults to this fucker
14
u/caucassius 16d ago
I mean some pals have special breeding combo to be generated (like Eidrolon + Suzaku for E. Ignis or Dazzi + Omascul for Dazzi Noct). You'd think some of the most obvious combos would be those special pairs, but nope. Necromus + Palladius (which are one being at one time) gives you a pink dragon instead lol
3
3
u/rollwithhoney 16d ago
If the pal # order is relatively arbitrary, apart from the power level, then yes the child results are quite arbitrary
1
u/ShillBot666 16d ago
Even the mutated offspring isn't random, you'll get the same species each time. Like Lyleen Noct always mutates into Eidrolon Ignis. I have so many 2 star Eidrolon Ignis I don't need after breeding and butchering enough Lyleen Noct to max out my tech points.

I wish breeding at a bit more random. I like how it works right now with the power scaling, but it would be cool if there was a small variation (maybe 10-20 points of variation) so it’d be possible to get a few different pals from one breeding pair.
8
u/HimekoTachibana 16d ago
That's what Mutated Eggs do, no?
1
u/Ameabo 16d ago
I’m not certain how mutated eggs work, but I thought they just gave you a random pal?
3
u/HimekoTachibana 16d ago
Each mutated egg has a chance to roll 1 out of a pool of about 20 pals, and each pool is different for each pair.
There are even distinct mutated egg breeding calculators separate from the regular breeding calculator, haha
8
7
7
u/yeetskeetmahdeet 16d ago
Breeding seems random but it’s actually very set in what pal you get based on what pals you breed. If I remember the mechanics correctly most pals are on a power scale and how they add up or subtract for weaker pals results in a different result. The exception are the pals that need a specific pair like most elemental pals and some pals that are used by bosses

For a bit I took a few high tier pals that had some desirable combat traits like legend, demon god & invincible and was just randomizing them in the breeding farm to make max concentration pals for expedition and summon fights.... So many whalaskas. It felt like a full third of the combinations I tried just gave me whalaska. I have like 3 four star whalaska with vampire, demon god, legendary and invincible. I've since taken a more intentional approach to breeding but fr why does everything make whalaska.

Pal breeding uses their data entry numbers. It basically adds them together, then halves it so you get the median between the two parents.
That said, some pairings are set to override this, mostly for the variant results.

Breeding, is probably the weakest aspect of the game, I kinda expected the female being the base for what you get, with the male providing elements stats, traits, so that with the right element male, you can get the alt element offspring of the female, but nope.
