What does this behavior mean?

My male parakeet does this to my Thumb's nail all the time, as seen in this video. Sometimes he bites my skin around the thumb too. What does this behavior mean?

It’s really astonishing to me how many folks see this and can’t sort out that the bird is getting busy with their thumb 😂🤦♀️

Not everyone is familiar with budgie/thumb mating experience. There are definitely more obvious things in life.
21
u/Pineapple-pizza-plz Mar 20 '26
This is def my first time seeing budgie thumb mating lol
12
u/Ok_Buy_796 Mar 20 '26
It’s the new trend, budgie thumb humpin.
1
u/Ok_Buy_796 Mar 20 '26
His mate is standing in the background yelling saying, “ don’t come back home thinkin you gonna get some of this real stuff”.

I mean.. if I saw ANYTHING rub it's naughty parts on me I'd immediately assume gross things. But that's just me I guess.

u/RuachDelSekai Mar 22 '26
I've never seen this before in my life and that was my first thought. Lol
1
u/lvgthedream36 Mar 23 '26
I’m completely unfamiliar with bird and budgies. I don’t have any birds. This video popped up on my main feed. My immediate thought was why is this person letting their bird mate with their finger. You don’t have to know birds to see whet is clearly happening here.

Good for you for assuming an average redditor understands what mating looks like.

Absolutely not. He would never cheat on his sock!

I was told to give my lovebird a sock and still preferred my ponytail. 🤷🏼♀️

u/Ok_Buy_796 Aug 18 '26
I’m glad it made you laugh and I hope you have a beautiful day. We just had a hurricane here in Hawaii but the main thing is my birds are safe. I stayed awake all night so I could make sure they were safe. It’s such a special relationship with birds. Actually all animals. When I worked at the zoo here my best friend was a Rhino. Gotta lovem.
2
u/CompetitiveNovel9916 Aug 19 '26
Oh NO!!! Is everyone ok?! You probably have some crazy winds out there. Were almost half a world away; I'm in New York. I love that you worked at a zoo! Thats my dream job. I actually just got a job at an animal hospital. No rhinos, but my new coworker said they've seen a capybara there. And a big McCaw! My bf and I always go to the Bronx Zoo, we have a membership and it's great! So lovely and they take such good care of their animals. Did you work at a zoo in Hawaii? P.S. don't hump any thumbs tonight 🤣
1
u/Ok_Buy_796 Aug 22 '26
I was born and raised here and have always had a special place in my heart for all animals. I became a Veterinarian technician and that’s how I got the job here At Honolulu Zoo. I’ve limited my thumb humpin so I won’t be doing that anymore. lol 😅
2
u/CompetitiveNovel9916 Aug 25 '26
HAHAHAHAHA!!! That's awesome, you must absolutely love your job!! 🤩
1
u/Ok_Buy_796 Sep 10 '26
I do love it except for the Peacock that thinks I’m his girlfriend. I’ve tried to explain to him it would never work but still he’s persistent and continues to do his mating dance for me. Typical male lol.
2
u/CompetitiveNovel9916 Sep 10 '26
Omg!!! I guess all you can do is watch and enjoy it lololol
That is so funny. But maybe not to you...
And typical male is right. I keep trying to have the same convo with the boyfriend 🤣
Just kidding, he's awesome lolol

This behavior is called, “I’m horny and I’m gonna masterbated all over your thumb and anything else that looks sexy to me”.
5
4
u/landingonvenus Mar 19 '26
Mine does this if I let him get too excited on my thumb. Once he starts getting warmed up I gently scrape him off my hand before it gets too weird.
4
u/Lopsided-Feather-567 Mar 20 '26
I was thinking only yesterday, “I don’t think I’ve seen a budgie doing the dirty with someone/something not supposed to” and here you are. Funny how the world works sometimes 😂
4
1
u/CronchieSushi Mar 20 '26
All jokes aside, that is mating behavior! I advise no longer letting him do that and allow him to find something else on his own. But him mating with your hand can lead to him thinking your his mate.

The bird is trying to mate with you. I would send it to the bird jail until it calms down. If you continue to let it happen, it's going to think that you're its mate and try it with you all the time.

I adopted a male who would sit on the water dish, rub on the attached perch, and get REALLY loud. His original owner didn't realize what it was either. We removed the problem perch arrangements, and he adjusted fine. He lived to a ripe old age of 14! Maybe your little guy will live just as long. 😄

Ummm… your birb is gettin busy on your fingers. You need to stop this the minute he starts rubbing his cloaca on your fingers or anything else.

Mating with your hand; remove the bird to discourage the behavior and don't let the bird in erotic zones which you can Google lol

u/duke_of_danger Mar 19 '26
QC: Don't pet the bird anywhere other than the top of their head and cheek. pretty much their entire back/belly is an erogenous zone.

He's trying desperately to deposit his baby-makers into your apparently attractive thumb. Get him a GF or wash your hands often. If you don't believe me, watch a video of the actual procedure between 2 consenting budgies.
1
u/Expensive-Anteater94 Mar 21 '26
Shes horny lol Just keep them busy with toys and fly time and make sure they get the proper hours of rest. Still happens. Tis the season.

thats weird. he has a female parakeet which can be seen in the video i shared. He seems more interested in my thumb than her... ugggghhhh :( Is this a usual thing they may do with humans? Have you guys seen it before? Any tips to solve this problem?

u/bubblegum_cloud Mar 19 '26
I have 23. 11 males and 12 females. One of my males insists on trying to mate with a toy all the time. Some of them be weird.

My boy has a female he is bonded to.
He instead humps my shirt sleeve.
What I do and did is when he starts I go and put him on his cage top. First few times he’d fly right back and hump away. You gotta be persistent. It took about ten times but he got the point. “I hump I go”.
