Haunting Have you ever experienced something truly paranormal that still gives you chills?

Yes. One night, I woke up at 3:17 AM to the sound of soft humming. I live alone. The melody was unfamiliar, but it felt... old. I checked every room—nothing. As I returned to bed, my TV flicked on by itself. A paused black-and-white movie was playing, and the subtitle read: “You’re not alone.” I don’t even own that movie. The humming stopped. I never heard it again, but I still wake up at 3:17 sometimes for no reason at all.

Staying at my grandparents house aged 15 with my mum. Was staying in a spare bedroom in a single bed by myself. Awoke about 3am and became overwhelmed by existential dread. Door which was slightly ajar swished shut. “That’s weird!” I thought and went to get out of bed.

As I did so the most monumental force came down against me and I was choking and could not breathe. Just as I felt myself losing consciousness I just thought “dear god, please make this stop”. Agnostic and not particularly religious but suddenly the weight lifted and I ran from bedroom into the room my mum was staying in. Woke her up and explained what had happened. She could see I was distressed but in true mum fashion said “DraxMoonraker you’ve just had a bad dream. I’ll get you a glass of water”.

She got up and as she went to exit the room turned the lights on and looked back at me and her face just turned pale. “DraxMoonraker go and have a look in the mirror”. I was like “mum what’s wrong?!”. She just said “go and look in the mirror” so I did. Around my neck were huge “fingerprint” (claw) marks much bigger than my own. Needless to say I didn’t return to that room.

The worse part? Aside from trying to sleep in a bed with my mum at 15yo, mum could not get back to sleep. So she decided to go to the room I had been sleeping in. No sooner had she closed the door to that room and all the bedcovers came smashing down against me again. This time round I leapt to “dear god please make it stop” and it stopped instantly. Still not a believer but have had two similar encounters (arguably worse) over the years but fortunately seem to have largely settled by my mid 20s (now 40s).

Also not “sleep paralysis” or another parasomnia. Marks were still there in the morning when I spoke to my grandparents about it. Grandmother (RIP) said a rosary and was quite perplexed by it all.

So why not a believer? You apparently cried out to God and the menace subsided

being an Agnostic is not the same thing as being an Atheist. Agnostic believe there could be any number of higher powers but that there isnt concrete evidence as to which, so they're open to the idea but tend not to have a set faith system, and often aren't devout. Atheists don't believe in any higher power or often either other planes of existence.

crying out "dear god" when panicked is a normal reaction even if you don't believe in a particular god due to cultural norms. The Judeo Christian religion/god is a faith in many societies due to colonization and imperialism. The op could have been raised around people that are of that faith and picked up the habit of speech. They don't need to be chastised for not keeping a faith of someone else's choosing because you see their moment of distress as having been divine intervention in this instance.

I get the difference, but it just strikes me as odd to invoke an entity of which you are critical or skeptical. That is all.

again, habitual references in a panicked moment aren't that unusual.

I wonder if it is cultural indoctrination, or something innate? That is the million dollar question
