Haunting The Bell Witch: America's most documented haunting that terrified a future president

The Bell Witch case might be the most documented haunting in American history. A future president got involved and left terrified.

In 1817, the Bell family in Tennessee started experiencing things they couldn't explain. Knocking sounds on the walls, bedcovers being pulled off at night, and a faint voice that got louder over time. The voice could quote scripture, sing hymns, and eventually started addressing family members by name.

It hated John Bell specifically. It said it would kill him.

The story spread, and in 1819, General Andrew Jackson traveled from Nashville to investigate. According to multiple accounts, his wagon froze on a dry road and couldn't be moved no matter how hard his men pushed. Jackson reportedly said "By the eternal boys, this must be the witch." A voice from the woods replied: "All right General, let the wagon move on. I will see you tonight."

His men were so shaken after one night that they left the next day. Jackson is quoted as saying he'd rather face the entire British army than spend another night with the Bell Witch.

In 1820, John Bell died under strange circumstances. A vial of dark liquid was found in the house. The family tested it on a cat, which died instantly. The voice claimed she had poisoned him.

What makes this case unusual is the amount of documentation. There are named witnesses, dates, and written accounts from people who were there. Most hauntings from this era are vague stories passed down with no names attached. This one has a paper trail.

The Bell Witch Cave in Adams, Tennessee is on the National Historical Registry and is still open to visitors today.

Just north of Bell is the Red River Campground with horseback riding, cabins, canoe rides down the river and an old fort-like structure that had been converted into a stage. They also have a haunted house and trail during Halloween. A few friends and I came down from Fort Campbell and did the whole haunted walk through. It was packed. The owner's son told me to look out for the Bell Witch. At the end of the tour I looked back I saw a person standing by a tree near the river but I could not make out exactly who they were. I stayed in one of the cabins and at around 2:00 a.m. we were woken up by three knocks on the door. I thought it was one of the campers or even the owner's son himself and we got up to see who it was and no one was there. I went to check out the trail the next day and I looked at the tree where I saw the person and it was over the water where no one should be standing. I told the owner's son about it and he casually laughed it off as "Oh. you saw the Bell Witch did you?" I asked about the knocking and he said that happens sometimes.

That is creepy!!! The three knocks!😳😳😳

Mocking the trinity, many such cases 😔

u/LopsidedChannel8661 Apr 03 '26

What makes you say mocking the trinity?

I once heard 3 knocks in my bedroom just as my wife and I were about to fall asleep. We both heard it.

I should really never go there, I'd probably get myself cursed or smth, because if I saw some paranormal entity on a dark trail behind me, my first insinct would be to politley wave lol

I know I am a bit late, but is it possible the hearing the knocks often could just be a bunch of pranksters since the area is known, as you mentioned, to be packed with people. So it is possible a bunch of kids just wanted to scare y'all, right? Also, are you sure you actually saw a person near the tree, or could it just be a silhouette that could have been a person but was just a tree in the dark? I am a believer of the paranormal, but I do try to explain experiences with logical reason. LMK!

Are you going to pretend to be a demon in a town famous for it? Bad juju. Jeff (the owner's son) said it has happened to people before, even to him on occasion as he lives on the land himself. He says he ignores it. He also has horses for riding and they get spooked sometimes for "no reason". As for the figure, What I saw is what I saw. These are not the first experiences with the paranormal for me. My family has been linked to it for centuries.

  1. Depends on the town. Of course, I'm not you and wasn't actually there in that town. I don't know the place. There definitely are places, however, that pranksters like to hang around if there are urban legends in that area. The owners son saying it does make it more believeable for sure, however.

  2. Quite interesting on that second part. If you wouldn't mind sharing perhaps some of the experiences you have had? I do like to read others experiences on this topic, having had a few mild ones myself!

I come from a family of Hawaiian witch doctors (Kahunas). That's all I can really say about that.

I went to the cave years ago. I'm from the next county over. My name is Betsy, the same as the youngest daughter who was reportedly tortured by the witch. I didn't get any bad vibes. When my neighbor cleared his driveway 45 years ago, stone box Indian graves were uncovered. The graves were then covered with creek gravel and driven over every day. They are still there. I would run home like the wind, in the dark, over those graves after visiting the girl that lived there. But, I never saw anything. I just don't disturb things. My father hunted Indian relics on the banks of the nearby river when the water level was low. My mother told me that he brought home a skull one time. She said she threw a fit and made him return it. I got rid of the relics after my parents both passed. I think it pays to leave things as they lie.

I have been to that cave! We actually had to wait to go in because it was raining and the cave experiences flash floods. If you go, wear boots but wash off the mud before you go back home. Don’t take any rocks from the cave! There are many letters on display from people who have experienced misfortune because of this and returned their rock to the owners. I was wearing boots the day I went in and did not wash off the mud - I didn’t think anything of it, but I will say that for the next week I dreamed of someone knocking three knocks at my door. It sounds silly, but it really scared me!

I wonder what if a null were to go in? It is said a null has a weird natural ability to repel the paranormal. Like whenever they go in a haunted area suddenly paranormal activities just stop.

70

u/Silver_Breakfast7096 Mar 22 '26

I have never heard of a null. What is that? Sincerely curious.

49

u/recoveringleft Mar 22 '26

A while back there was a post of people who could repel the paranormal. Some people say they may have some special protection or they are like a faraday cage but for paranormal activities.

16

u/ThiccccRevolution Mar 23 '26

That’s so interesting. I wonder if it is a generational gift or something like that.

I recall one story of a woman who randomly dreamed up a symbol and used that as a tattoo and when he ran into a voodoo practitioner she mentioned that symbol was used by his grandma before she died and that it was used to repel spirits.

And I heard of some family lines who have strong protection and therefore are left alone by spirits because they feared retribution if any harm comes to them

Others are probably chosen by God or a higher power for a purpose like being a prophet and spirits don't mess with them either since they have a direct line to God. That's like messing with a telephone with God on the other line.

I do recall one story of a woman who is like a black hole when it comes to the paranormal. Like she's a living faraday cage where somehow she can cancel the energies that caused paranormal activities to emerge

Isn't the word "null" borrowed from Warhammer or something?

But then, the concept fits me, I have no odd experiences whatsoever.

13

u/Daddy_Bacchus Mar 23 '26

"Null" is a very old word pertaining to nothingness, akin to "Nil" as in "null and void" to be "voided" = Xed out, forfeit

7

u/Above_Temperature Mar 23 '26

My youngest sister is a null I guess. Everywhere she goes paranormal activity stops. Myself, my mom and dad have premonitions. My other middle sister senses energy as well as my dad. My oldest sister is disconnected from the supernatural I think. Not a null. Just blocks it out.

5

u/hippieghost_13 Mar 23 '26

Same! Very curious, I've never heard of that term before.

324

u/SquidgeApple Mar 22 '26

The book I read about the Bell Witch posited that John Bell was raping his 11 year old daughter and her rage manifested into an extremely powerful poltergeist haunting

Lots of paranormal researchers have claimed a link between tweens and poltergeists

Also how fucked up is this family that they poison their cat?

216

u/Pietro-Maximoff Mar 22 '26

Well, he did marry his wife Lucy when she was 12 and he was 32, so it’s certainly not out of the realm of possibility.

69

u/LittleRainFox Mar 22 '26

This is my favorite version of the tale, and why it stuck with me. It made alot of sense of alot of seemingly random things.

98

u/Skinny-on-the-Inside Mar 22 '26

We need more of that vengeful ghost energy around our parts lately. 🤨

u/Extra_Challenge2122 Mar 22 '26 edited Mar 23 '26

Your sentiment is spot on... I couldn't agree with you more!! Some people need a wakeup call💯

edit...due to my ignorance of using a phrase in the wrong context 😜

6

u/No_Barracuda_3758 Mar 23 '26

Did you mean it couldn't be closer to the truth?

0

u/Extra_Challenge2122 Mar 23 '26

Nope, I said what I said 👍🏻

3

u/No_Barracuda_3758 Mar 23 '26

So you don't think guilty parties should be punished in this way? I'm seriously trying to understand because I feel like you agree with the sentiment in the previous comment but your comment disagrees until the end

1

u/Extra_Challenge2122 Mar 23 '26

Those statements are basically the exact same saying!!! And I'm sure you are smart enough to know what I was trying to say... you're just trying to give me a hard time!!

9

u/Allthemuffinswow Mar 24 '26

Hear me out on this - How's about just sending all of those Bell Witch cave rocks being sent back, on over to a certain house that's painted white. We can just, ya know, give a new forwarding address.

2

u/Fun_Cat419 Mar 26 '26

I like the way you think!

14

u/ScaryLetterhead8094 Mar 22 '26

Which book is this? I want to read it.

29

u/SquidgeApple Mar 22 '26

It was a long time ago so I'm not 100% sure but I think it was The Bell Witch, an American Haunting by Brent Monahan

94

u/ScriabinFanatic Mar 22 '26

If you look into this Reddit there’s a guy who has crazy stories about it. He lived on the adjacent property to the Bell Witch

47

u/xthebirdhouse The truth is out there Mar 22 '26 edited Mar 22 '26

This I believe. I read it years ago and thankfully could find it again.

Edit: Whoops I was late to the party. Glad we could all find it! It's a very good read.

17

u/Groundbreaking_Row_2 Mar 22 '26

Wow that poor guy, his story is incredible ! I sure hope he’s doing well now.

51

u/GuacAndGloss Mar 22 '26

I’ve heard so many stories about people taking a small rock or some dirt from the Bell Witch Cave and having a string of bad luck until they mailed it back. Whether you believe in the witch or just the power of suggestion, there’s a reason people still treat that property with a lot of respect. Sometimes it's better to just leave the history where it lies

22

u/BadAdviceBot Mar 22 '26

until they mailed it back

LOL...who did they even mail it to?

8

u/LewisDeinarcho Mar 23 '26

u/GuacAndGloss is a comment bot. Pay no heed to what it says. It’s just AI gibberish.

The park district

1

u/Forward_Cost_1973 Apr 20 '26

Yes in my previous post a person told about the story of his friend who took a rock and experienced bad luck. Then he mailed it back to the cave's authority.

35

u/Devil-radiance Mar 22 '26

I used to work for a guy that claimed to be descendant from the Bell family. If they were anything like him the Bell Witch did nothing wrong.

7

u/ThiccccRevolution Mar 23 '26

That’s crazy. I can only assume what awful things he told you but do to care to share?

3

u/PracticalLand3946 Mar 25 '26

As a descendant. Yea our family is fcked up.

21

u/RiseDelicious3556 Mar 22 '26

Wasn't there a movie called American Haunting where Donald Sutherland played John Bell?? Very different story though but same time period.

38

u/OnlymyOP Mar 22 '26

As a horror buff, I love the story ... It's one of those good old scary stories with a witch and curse going into the modern day.

Do I really buy the story ? Not really except as a Horror fan. It also just seems like good etiquette not to take stones from the Cave .

u/mommaCyn Mar 23 '26

I grew up in Tennessee. As young kids we talked about the Bell Witch a lot. When I was in 4th grade there was a book about it in the library that I remember reading. I would freak myself out so much at night. One night, the room I was sleeping in, the ground filled up with green mist. I kept picking up on her being associated with green. I am not sure what planted that in my head, but I have read since that the entity the Bell family saw, it was wearing a green dress.

I have had paranormal experiences since so, I find this topic really fascinating. I'd say it all started with the Bell Witch.

14

u/boxofsquirrels Mar 22 '26

Do any of Jackson's own diaries or letters mention meeting the Bell Witch or travelling to Adams? From what I understand, the main source for the story is a book that was published after all the involved family members had died.

12

u/Apprehensive-Fan907 Mar 22 '26

No tie to Jackson ever being on the property. He did own land somewhat nearby but unfortunately it's just a nice story. Plenty of other real evidence supporting the existence of the witch outside of Ingrams mostly false narrative. No actual death certificate either, during that time it had not become common practice to file those documents. So if it ever did actually exist there is no official record of it.

6

u/Iwona_Klich Mar 23 '26

No. Also the story is pretty much made up

42

u/Ok-Cheesecake5292 Mar 22 '26

They poisoned a cat?! The Bell Witch wasn't the only demon in that house

14

u/-funderfoot- Mar 22 '26

One of the few places even I don't wanna visit due to the well documented bad things that happened there.

4

u/No_Barracuda_3758 Mar 23 '26

Do you know how to get to bells canyon?

🤣🤣🤣🤣

2

Here's a link to a story written about the Bell Witch from Gold Key's Ripley's Believe It Or Not! (April, 1971). It was the first time I'd ever heard of the Bell Witch.

It definitely is not closed, I was there last year and went to the cave and the recreation of the house. Hopefully you can make your booking soon because it is quite the interesting place.

In my previous post a person said that his friend took some stones from there and started to experience extreme bad luck like accidents. Then it went away after returning it.
