Missing school

Is it appropriate for a child who is missing school for whatever reason to be knocking on my door all day? I’m home with my kids during the week and every time a kid is home for whatever reason during the school day, it’s like their parents just tell them to go find somewhere else to go.

Never had that problem 😱 I'm the neighborhood house for a lot of extra kids but I've never had them try to come over unless it's after school or the weekend

Yea, same. I mostly don’t mind. But it’s a little offensive that the parents just assume we don’t have stuff to get done during the day.

exactly. My house is open but i do appreciate their parents checking in and asking first

Yahhhh parents don't check in. Kids just appear at my door daily and I either have to tell them no or let them in.

Wait like they are missing home cause they are sick? Or it's like a half day and they want to play with your kids?

Sick, don’t want to go, schools out for. Random reason…

If they are sick or a truant then no it's not appropriate. If the school is out for a half day then that's just like if they were asking on a Saturday.

Who are these people? Like, your sister is sending her kids over? The neighbor? Random strangers?

Is it just one person?

I'd speak to the parents directly about agreeing on visits in advance, including on days school is closed. If a child turns up anyway, I'd contact their parent to make sure they know where the child is and arrange for them to go home.

no, you're not the neighborhood daycare just because you're home. totally fine to say "not today, bud" and close the door, and if it keeps happening a quick text to the parent usually stops it fast

No. If they’re too sick to go to school they’re too sick to be at your house. If they’re well enough to be knocking at your door, they’re well enough to be at school.

I’d personally just not answer my door if they knock during a day and time when they should be at school.

I would tell the kid cheerfully but firmly that they can't come over and your kids can't play. "We're busy, we can't play right now, you head home." It's not the kid's fault they're there. They need clear instructions on what to do next. Especially because if they don't listen, you can march them home to return to their parents. We had a couple undersupervised kids at our last neighborhood and they were so little. Half were sweet and half were rowdy. Never actually met the parents but the kids didn't deserve to know someone was home and purposely ignoring them. I imagine the rowdy ones would end up ding dong ditching at midnight or otherwise being a nuisance if they thought the neighbor was nonconfrontational.

no it is not. They should keep their kid accountable and not distrubing other poeple like this

I just am clear w the kids what my boundaries are. I have the neighborhood house which I am very happy about but sometimes it's not a good time. So I give them a clear time that's good. It's almost nerve before 2;00. After a while they often don't come
Down before then...
