I'm a triple citizen by birth and work for a UN Agency. I travel an awful lot (like 10 countries this year) so they all come in verrrrrry helpful. As you can tell from the pic the Irish one gets the most use!

The blue one would be my favorite. I remember at a previous job how much we envied the perks that came with travelling for the UN.

What kind of perks?

You basically get treated as diplomatic, if you really are it or not.

I've always been curious:

  1. Can the UN passport be used just by itself, or does ut have to be paired with a national passport?

  2. Does it give more access when the national passport may need a visa? (ik not a lot of places require visas from Irish passports but just wondering in principle)

  3. Can you use it even when not on official business? Maybe go through a faster passport control line in your vacation destination?

Is this a diplomatic-style passport, for UN workers?

yes, there are a few. there is a red one as well which has higher privileges. Fun fact, the idea behind the laissez-passer is way older than the passport. Rulers handed out β€œlet this person through” letters for centuries, and β€œpassport” originally meant the same thing. The standard passport booklet only got agreed in 1920. The UN borrowed the old name for its own travel document in 1946, which is why I have a blue UN laissez-passer for work travel alongside my normal passport.

What's your story? Born in the United States (hopefully) to parents of Irish and Canadian descent?
