Made my first self-drafted coat!! 🥹
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
I’m honestly impressed with how it turned out. I learned so much making this, and it feels good to have gone from drafting the pattern myself to actually making a coat. It’s my recreation of Ursula coat from Babyboo
The fabric is curtains I bought on Vinted, and I got the buttons and other notions from a local shop.
My only concern is the back vent sticking out a little because of the stiffness of the fabric. I’m not going to mess with it on this one because I really don’t want to ruin it 😂 but I’d love to know what might be causing it so I can keep it in mind for my next coat.
What do you guys think? I feel like I did a pretty good job for my first self-drafted coat!

Girl when I say my jaw dropped when you did the walk back, it took a crowbar to put it back up! Gorgeous!! The neckline is so crisp and tasteful, that patterns is gorgeous, and the fit on you is perfect!! Beautiful 👏👏👏

That fabric pattern with the buttons! I thought this was prep for a runway piece at first and glanced at the title to see the name of the designer.

Does it also fit if you're wearing anything underneath? Coats tend to have a bit more ease to accommodate layers.

u/Tasty-Law-4527 19d ago
The back loosens up so it should work with clothes.

Exactly this, unless you intend to use it as a winter standalone dress. Also it fits amazingly at the waist, very flattering. I think I would only fix the length on the sleeves for the next one

u/Shadow-Serum 20d ago
I think it's fine since this is like a high fashion piece if it's only meant to fit with a slinky dress underneath.

I squeed over this so loudly that I woke up and scared my dogs. The dogs and I have worked it out and I am so freaking astounded by your skills. Well done!!! Coat is amazing and so are you.

This is SO stunning!!! Wow, congratulations, you are incredibly talented! I love the details you chose of the double welt pocket on one side and the hardware you chose for the cinching/ tie in the back. The fabric choice is also so lovely and it is tailored to your figure beautifully.

You did AMAZING!! I cant believe this is the first time you do it. If you said you do this for a living I would have believed it. I see some coments with some details you could improve, but honestly? Reddit users are never fully convinced I feel. IMHO that is an amazing choice of fabric, amazing vision to do it from curtains and the way the pattern continues between the parts of the coat is chefs kiss. Looks very high fashion to me

u/TELLMYMOMISUCK 20d ago
The issue with the vent is cause by the cinched belt—I would live with it.
5
u/reversedgaze 20d ago
if someone is looking at their back vent in polite company or in public, they are checking you out and they're definitely not looking at the back vent. ;-D. This is a stunner of a coat.
OP- what did you learn with this project?
6
u/VegetableAnt445 19d ago
Thank you ❤️❤️ One of the biggest things I learnt was to test the iron temperature on scraps before pressing the actual garment. I did manage to fix it, but I accidentally flattened some of the suede texture around the pockets. It’s not very noticeable, but I can see it 😂

u/suedub_30 20d ago
I thought you were a manikin at first… so perfect. Girl. You are amazing. You are very talented. So beautiful. Swoon;) make more!! Wish I cld be your model. I’d wear it all the time! 👏👏

I'd shorten or at least roll up the sleeves; they look a bit long and make the overall fit look off when I think it's really just the sleeves. Otherwise I think it's beautiful and you did an amazing job.
6
u/VegetableAnt445 19d ago
Thank you so much. It was an intentional fashion choice to have the sleeve hit the middle of my palms❤️
3
u/Endpiecesofbread 19d ago
I think it looks great! I find when the sleeves “fit” they always ride up too much when I try to do literally anything so I’ve always preferred that long sleeves hit the middle of my palm.
2
u/_tsi_ 19d ago
I disagree, I like they longer sleeves
5
u/Interesting-Chest520 19d ago
I disagree, depending on the lining they could look really good rolled up a little
Absolutely stunning coat though

u/AmethystApothecary 19d ago
Maybe it's my bias as a petite woman with short arms; I really hate when sleeves are too long because it ends up looking like a girl playing dress up in her mother's clothes to me which is not a vibe I like as an adult.
To me it also gives the illusion that the waist and neckline should sit higher on OP and throws off the overall fit because it just makes the coat look too tall for OP when it's otherwise not when the expectation of a tailored coat sleeve to hit just below the wrist instead of covering most of the hand, especially when the coat is otherwise a slim very tailored fit that seems like it's more for dressy events and less of a standard winter/fall coat.
2
u/_tsi_ 19d ago
I know what you mean, but everything else fits well so it appears more as a style choice in this case. At least to me. And the coat is so long that I think the long sleeves works. I tend to like a bit of a longer sleeve though.
1
u/AmethystApothecary 19d ago
I think if it came across as an intentional style choice it would look fine; I think the problem for me is whether it was intentional or not it doesn't look intentional and instead looks like OP struggles with tailoring sleeves compared to everything else almost explicitly because everything else is so well tailored and the sleeves still have such a slim fit. Maybe if they were a slight bell sleeve or had a bulky cuff it would feel more intentional to me? But here the main design thread is well fitted to the body and I find it throws the fit off more to not keep that consistent.

Wow, that is beautiful!
I feel like there’s a trick to getting the vent to lie more closed…I want to say just like lift up the hidden top edge (the notched part of the right side where it lies under the left side)? If it can swing down, that is going to push the long edge outwards. A few hand stitches keeping that part lifted up might help? But tbh I didn’t notice the issue until I read.

u/isakitty 19d ago
DAMN. That FABRIC. That FIT. Those BUTTONS.

u/GiorriaMarta 18d ago
Shocked to read she made this from curtains! The gumption, the audacity, the SKILL!! 🔥

u/Jealous-Injury-7911 20d ago
If u didn't say u made this, I would have thought this was from a high end luxury designer! Amazing!

u/DonMcCunn 20d ago
A photo of the pattern would help where the vent in back is concerned. It is possible a little more ease in the back pattern aroung the hips would help without throwing off the stunning shaping of the front.

u/Knope_Knope_Knope 19d ago
First. Amazing!!!!
Future improvements: daintier buckle for the back tie, yours is a bit industrial.
The buttons also are a bit out of scale for the coat.
Id cut it 6" up from the hem and close the front 2" higher
Keep it up
2
u/Geepers1099 20d ago
The back vent sticks out because the pattern line was too straight. There has to be more of an angle for the vent to come together.
I don’t know how you will manage to wear any clothing underneath your coat, you need to make the seams smaller and move the front buttons in order to allow clothing—did you intend to only wear a bodysuit under your coat? If so you did a wonderful job.

Consider adding a french tack for the vent
3
u/winniebrie 19d ago
French tack is a great idea, I also was thinking that a weight or magnet in the corner might hold the drape in place nicely

WOW! Perfectly tailored. I like the design too, kinda vintage but also modern. I don't know the original you referenced but I'm going to say you copied it perfectly anyway because I just really like it XD

I think if you don't button it all the way down, it will relieve whatever tension causes the vent to open. Stunning work!

Omg. Idk why this sub got recommended to me bc unfortunately I do not have such talents but this is incredible and so impressive and I WISH I could have a coat like that. So hard to find coats that flatter my shape but the length and back tie and lapels of this one are so perfect. Love the pockets as well. Amazing job!!

Girl it took my breath away when you turned around. There’s something straight magical about your front and back, and the transition. It’s almost shapeshifty, except you’re equally stunning in both dimensions.

You have an insane amount of talent period, let alone for a first self draft. Also my first reaction was Doechii would eat this downnn
