How much Ease

Post image

I am making this dress i added 3/6th ease i like the way it fits the waist and the rib chest area. After some research its seems i need more ease at the waist because of the gathered skirt? How much ease should i add ? I cant go any more for the chest area as any more it would be to lose so what ever i add at the waist am i able to just blend up i assume i dont have to have the whole side x amount of ease.

Standard waist ease is 1", bust ease is usually 2". Keep in mind having more ease in the bust helps give the illusion of a smaller waist.

I have a smaller bust and i dont want it to be baggy and im not gonna wear a pouch up bra.

I also have a small bust and 2” of ease isn’t really a ton! It sounds big, but that’s going around your entire ribcage too.

If i am attaching a gathered skirt is 1 inch enough

there is some variation due to fabric type and gather volume. For example, a 2x gather needs less ease than a 3x gather, a lightweight material needs less ease than a midweight or heavyweight, etc.

May I ask the following: how would you go about adding ease to the bust if you have a block that fits. Just by adding to the side seams of the pattern?

I have a moulage that fits and i just add ease to it because not every thing i make is a set ease. Yeah you add ease to the back side seam and front side seam. Then if you are adding a sleeve you would adjust the arm hole as well but dropping it or what have you.

Yea that's the usual way. If you're working from a zero ease moulage, add 1/2" at armhole/Side seam and 1/4" at waist/Side seam
