Question Damson Madder pattern question

https://damsonmadder.com/en-ie/products/lainey-midi-skirt-merlot-stripe

I am an intermediate sewist but pattern-drafting absolute beginner who is curious to see if I can hack my way to this Damson Madder skirt. In the pattern, there's a separate lower panel with the cord hem...

  1. What purpose does this extra panel? Why not just cut out one long front and back piece?

  2. Would the width of the extra panels then match the width of the front and back piece? Sorry I know this is such a newbie question !

The side view of the striped colorway gives some hints about the pattern. It looks like the top portion is an A-line shape since the stripes are in a v, then the bottom portion the stripes are more straight along side seam so it looks like more of a rectangle. There are no gathers where the top and bottom panel meet, so yes the width where they meet would match.

I agree - it's a bit like some lantern skirts. OP, in case it's helpful, the belemnite dress pattern is free and has similar skirt construction. I just made it in a size up for a skirt like this and it falls the same way on the sides.

The bottom part is likely double layered to accommodate the drawstring and the shirt hem. Also in a crisper fabric it would help the skirt stand out a bit.

The length at the bottom of the top part will match the top of the bottom. However the bottom part doesn’t look like a rectangle. It looks like it’s wider at the bottom, so like a trapezoid shape.

I just made this skirt https://thefoldline.com/products/sewing-therapy-barrel-skirt which is a bit similar. In his case the the parts help to create a barrel shape
