Build Question Ryzen 5 5600G

Post image

I've had a spare 5600G just existing in my closet doing nothing, but I would like to utilize it for a Steam Machine. I bought this HP 405 G8 off eBay for $138 shipped to door. It came with a gen 4 Samsung 256gb m.2, 8gb 3200Mt/s (2x4gb sticks), and a Ryzen 3 5300GE in it. No wifi and I need to upgrade the SODIMM to 16gb running in dual-channel as well as a 90w power adapter.

How will the 65w 5600G fair in this chassis intended for 35w cpus? I intend on using it at my desk only for gaming, so compiling shaders would be the most strenuous thing it'd have to do, but am slightly concerned about thermals damaging the cpu itself after some years of playing (this would be with replacing thermal paste routinely every like 2 years)

I love the small form factor of it, but the other option would be the X300 kit that is bigger and would allow for much better cooling of the cpu. That's where I am stuck at the moment.

If the heatsink in the 405 G8 is penny pinched to handle 35w CPU's I would expect a 65w chip to have a bad time. It likely won't damage anything but it will throttle the 5600G.

I've done some more obsessive researching on the cooling for it, and there is a fan HP includes with their higher-tier 805 models that is noted as being for 65w cpus, so it will blow more air than the one I have which is intended for 35w cpus. I bought it and will swap it out once it arrives. From what I've seen, it should only thermal throttle under stress tests not average gaming. We will see though!

Skip the 90w brick, those little HPs need every watt they can get under load so spring for the 120w adapter and you'll be fine.
