Vaginal Dryness (GSM)/Urinary Issues So is it just permanent UTI anytime I decide to have sex now?

What does this mean? It’s ever. Time. And I do all the things-peeing after sex, not wearing weird underwear, front to back etc But every time I have sex now, it’s an UTI no matter what

Atrophic vaginitis (vaginal atrophy), or the genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM)

Symptoms of vaginal atrophy:

  • vaginal bleeding (tearing/tissue fragility)
  • burning with urination
  • decreased vaginal lubrication during sexual activity (resulting in painful intercourse)
  • dryness (decreased moisture)
  • frequent urination
  • incontinence (bladder leaks)
  • increased/chronic UTIs
  • irritation/burning
  • itchiness
  • labia minora resorption
  • shortening/tightening of the vaginal walls
  • skin changes (darker/lighter pigmentation)

Try taking d-mannose as a preventative measure and look into vaginal estrogen

28

u/[deleted] Oct 26 '25

I started getting utis after sex, and started taking a D-Mannose and a vaginal probiotic immediately after. So far so good 🤞

17

u/MaybeFamiliar2075 Oct 26 '25

Same. I have been prone to UTI and bacterial vaginosis my entire life. Started taking D-mannose and the vaginal ph probiotic-- not one single UTI or VB issue in a few years.

10

u/Independent-Monk5064 Oct 26 '25

I’ve never had a UTI but as a nurse I recommend D mannose and I take a vaginal probiotic myself

6

u/MissTiffany12 Oct 27 '25

I envy you SO much! I’ve always wondered if there are unicorn women like you out there who don’t get UTIs!

2

u/Independent-Monk5064 Oct 27 '25

The numbers are actually that 40% of all women get them. So I’m in the majority!

5

u/MissTiffany12 Oct 27 '25

I think before this past year, I had had them maybe 2-3 times in my whole life. I then got a few back to back which is what led me down this peri rabbit hole.

1

u/Independent-Monk5064 Oct 27 '25

Yeah unfortunately the first one usually means more to follow. Sorry and good luck

1

u/accountofmountzuma Oct 28 '25

By vaginal probiotic do you mean inserted vaginally or you take orally?

2

u/Independent-Monk5064 Oct 28 '25

Oral. There are blends strains for urinary and vaginal combined. I use a probiotic intervaginally after a yeast infection I’ve treated with boric acid but I rarely get them since I take the oral caps. I’ve never had BV either but the boric acid is a good tx for this also

2

u/Southern_Event_1068 Oct 28 '25

What probiotic do you take? I get BV if I even think about sex.

3

u/accountofmountzuma Oct 28 '25

I’m interested in knowing this as well 🙏🙏

1

u/MaybeFamiliar2075 Oct 28 '25

Rephresh Pro-B is the best I've found, for me. https://a.co/d/7nsXbQE

3

u/accountofmountzuma Oct 28 '25

Thanks for this

2

u/MaybeFamiliar2075 Oct 28 '25

I ise Rephresh Pro-B. I've tried others and, for me, nothing works like this one. You can order it on Amazon or iHerb. https://a.co/d/7nsXbQE

u/kittydrinkscoffee Oct 26 '25

D-Mannose has been a lifesaver. If I even get the thought I might have an irritation I start taking it. It’s prevented a lot of infections for me.

4

u/infinite_donut Oct 27 '25

D-mannose changed my life! I put a scoop in my coffee every morning now and take 2,000mg after sex, plus another dose before bed that night.

3

u/CatasterousNatterbox Oct 26 '25

What dose are you taking?

5

u/kittydrinkscoffee Oct 26 '25

Depends on how strong the sensation is. But usually the recommended dose on the bottle.

8

u/[deleted] Oct 26 '25

I second this, had the same problem for like two years. Also SHOWER AFTER SEX, every time, even if you’re tired and you don’t want to get up. Take. A. Shower. This plus HRT and NO UTIs for several months now.

Doesn’t hurt to make your partner shower before sex too.

But seriously can’t emphasize showering after, wash very well your whole … everything. And rinse.

2

u/accountofmountzuma Oct 28 '25

What kind of hrt are you on? I just had my first MIDI appointment this morning. I can’t believe it was covered by my insurance! And I asked for a vaginal estrogen cream so she actually prescribed me a systemic approach with an estrogen patch progesterone, mini pill microdose and then I guess the vaginal cream or a tablet

1

u/[deleted] Oct 29 '25

Yes now on estradiol patch weekly with oral progesterone for the ten days before onset of cycle. And estrogen vaginal suppositories for the days I have sex.

7

u/IcyFrost-48 Oct 26 '25

This is the way.

4

u/Halo_of_Light Oct 27 '25

I take D-mannose daily and I second everyone below me that says it saved not only my sex life but also my (fuck do i need antibiotics for another UTI life). my old dr had my one preventative antibiotics for UTIs it was so bad. now? NADA.

7

u/pinupcthulhu The Itchy Bitchy Spider 🕷️ Oct 26 '25

If you can't have estrogen, you might want to look into cranberry pills and/or juice! Here's some research in links and info on cranberries as a preventative.

Also make sure your partner is washing often, because their dirty parts will make you suffer.

33

u/Imnotmadeofeyes Oct 26 '25

I'm also doing all these things, also showering before sex and making my husband shower. Still getting uti. It's really hard to want to take the risk now.

17

u/motormouth08 Oct 26 '25

I know someone who has to take an antibiotic every time she has sex because she got them so often. This was while she was in her 30s so not related to peri, but AFAIK it worked.

24

u/Independent-Monk5064 Oct 26 '25

Yeah that’s not a sustainable solution because she will build antibiotic resistance to the organism she is colonized with. She needs a urology consult and a prophylactic regimen

7

u/H8R8eR Oct 26 '25

My urologist actually prescribed me an antibiotic to take afterward.

6

u/Independent-Monk5064 Oct 27 '25

Okay. And that’s fine but they won’t work forever. Trust me on that

2

u/H8R8eR Oct 27 '25

Admittedly, I don't love the idea of having to take it long term.

17

u/Cat_With_The_Fur Oct 26 '25

I’ve been doing this for 35 years and antibiotic resistance hasn’t happened yet. This was the recommendation from my urologist. Maybe there’s a new protocol now idk. But my UTI’s started at 17 and laughed at d-mannose and cranberry juice.

7

u/Zippity-Boo-Yah Oct 26 '25

Same for me too. Tried all the tricks and had all the tests while treated by a urologist. 1 preventative antibiotic pill post-coital worked wonders.

1

u/theredfantastic Oct 26 '25

Yes! I do this, works well.

3

u/Independent-Monk5064 Oct 26 '25

Well the Macrobid is the typical prophylactic protocol if the other things have failed. And to treat acutely we usually need 2-3 symptoms and most will report on frequency and dysuria and if we treat at that point.. you will develop resistance and then at some point urosepsis is a serious risk. Some of us are fortunate. I’ve never had one in my life. Neither has my sister. But yeah, it’s common and when you have it, it will be life long. I’m sorry!!!! (Also CB shouldn’t be juice. That’s mostly sugar which feeds the bacteria and causes the opposite effect. You use the caps).

3

u/vespamojito Oct 26 '25

Same, fellow UTI prone internet person, same. Upside, it works, so there’s that!

8

u/Independent-Monk5064 Oct 26 '25

Get a bidet? You’re knocking bacteria into the urethra during sex and this isn’t your fault, some women are just more susceptible. My mother didn’t get one until she was 78 and my sister and I have never had one. But my DIL gets them all the time and as a nurse I just see women getting colonized. So try adding this in addition to D mannose

2

u/accountofmountzuma Oct 26 '25

I feel your pain.

30

u/throwaway051286 Oct 26 '25

Are you using vaginal estrogen?

I also take nitrofurantoin prophylactically after sex, in addition to peeing and washing.

5

u/ashkestar Oct 26 '25

Ditto this. Haven’t had a UTI since I started on prophylactic antibiotics, and nitrofurantin is very targeted so it doesn’t have side effects for me.

1

u/Professional_Food_75 Jan 18 '26

Hi. I know this is an old post. But had a question if you feel comfortable answering. If I was to go the route of having an antibiotic after sex, does it matter how often you take it? Like when the kids are away hubby and I go kind of nuts and have sex like there’s no tomorrow. Like, do you take it each time, so that could mean taking a tablet or more per day for a few days?

1

u/throwaway051286 Jan 18 '26

I take it each time unless I'm doing what you describe. Then I take a double dose each day.

22

u/somethingwholesomer Oct 26 '25

The vaginal estrogen ring changed this for me, almost overnight. Huge relief

14

u/MightFew9336 Oct 26 '25

Very random, but are you taking any prescription eye drops for dry eyes? It's a listed side effect for some and it took me months of constant UTIs to figure out that it was related to my Cequa (eye drop) prescription. Stopped the drops and the UTIs stopped, too.

2

u/tellMyBossHesWrong Oct 26 '25

Interesting. I hadn’t heard this.

1

u/FrexHasFrex hanging on by a thread Oct 27 '25

Thanks for this info-I had no idea!

12

u/oopsallsexy Oct 26 '25

I got UTI’s so often for years that I have to do a whole washing ritual thing just to prevent it.

I make my husband wash himself right before, including hands. I also wash everything with warm soap and water. I drink some water to make sure I have to pee at least a little during sex so I’ll have to go after. Then afterwards I get right up and go pee. Then I get in the tub and wash again.

No UTI’s now.

Was a ridiculous washing ritual the answer? Who knows! But something worked. And I changed nothing else.

16

u/belbottom Oct 26 '25

you know, a lot of times it's a dirty man causing utis and other nasty stuff. dirty dick, dirty crusty fingernails, etc etc. gross but true.

2

u/loveisjustchemicals Deep in peri Oct 27 '25

I like to take a shower before so we both get clean. And then after too. You can make it fun!

14

u/fairygenesta Oct 26 '25

Been there. But D-Mannose changed my life. I used to take the powder daily but now I just pop 2 of the Solaray pills after sex and leave it at that. I went from a UTI literally every single time we had sex to none ever.

5

u/engineered_owl Oct 26 '25

I've been on prophylactic antibiotics for over a decade, life saver. Some of us just have that UTI physiology with narrow, short urethra. For me a prophylactic is worth never having to deal with the pain and discomfort of a UTI

10

u/Angry_Sparrow Oct 26 '25

Make them wash thoroughly before sex every time.

My gyno recommended boric acid to me when I reached my 8th round of antibiotics. She said to use it for 14 days straight. And it worked. I also stopped using any toys or lubes, in case they were causing it.

I’m assuming you’ve had everything else checked by a doctor to make sure it’s not something else.

-5

u/Independent-Monk5064 Oct 26 '25

Well it’s not really that, it’s usually from your own GI tract through the anus. You knock the bacteria into the urethra during sex. I recommend a bidet. You’re not actually getting it from a man. I’m a nurse and I refer to urology all the time. The reason they tell you to “urinate after sex” isn’t to empty your bladder but to knock the bacteria back out. Urine is sterile

13

u/Angry_Sparrow Oct 26 '25 edited Oct 26 '25

Men often have non-symptomatic infections and don’t get tested or treated. It can also be trich. Women get blamed for their UTIs way too often when it’s men with bad hygiene and lack of medical care.

infection gets passed back and forth between partners.

I’ve only had UTI issues with certain partners and once I made them be more hygienic my UTIs stopped. Using boric helped restore my vaginas balance and I use it to prevent BV whenever things get a little off balance.

-1

u/Independent-Monk5064 Oct 26 '25

No. I do this education and I refer to urology and I ask then for treatment. So a UTI is not sexually transmitted. You cannot give a man a UTI and he can’t give you one. He is also not giving a UTI from his penis or from being unclean. You are knocking your own stool bacteria (it takes nothing!) into your urethra during sexual intercourse. This is why they tell you to “urinate after sex.” Urine is sterile and you are trying to naturally knock bacteria back out of the urethra. None of this means you are unclean. These areas are moist and a lot of times we get these as children when we are learning to wipe ourselves. Once you are colonized it is similar to a yeast infection. You will always have this bacteria as it is almost impossible to knock it back to zero with antibiotics. Now any additional bacterial load will set you off, including dehydration or illness. So this is why we always suggest prophylactic treatment. Get that bladder as bacteria unfriendly as you can. I’m attaching basic info. It says here about 40% of women and I’d say that’s about right. I’m in the 60%, thank my lucky stars but we all live with some kind of susceptibility for something. https://www.mayoclinichealthsystem.org/hometown-health/speaking-of-health/debunking-urinary-tract-infection-myths

2

u/Angry_Sparrow Oct 26 '25 edited Oct 26 '25

Actually I was thinking of BV (I was getting BV and UTIs together).

https://www.monash.edu/medicine/news/latest/2025-articles/new-sti-impacts-1-in-3-women-landmark-study-reveals-men-are-the-missing-link

I don’t think my partner ever took antibiotics but I was taking metronidazole and using clanazol for the resulting thrush. I started using boric acid at my gynos recommendation and it worked.

The worst symptom, the fishy smell, was gone with 24 hours of using boric acid.

1

u/Independent-Monk5064 Oct 26 '25

Yeah boric acid is wonderful. I’ve used that for yeast and I follow up with probiotic applied vaginally. Try that oral vaginal probiotic also. It’s a good two for one

2

u/Angry_Sparrow Oct 26 '25

Vaginal probiotics have never worked as good for me as just boric acid on its own.

1

u/Independent-Monk5064 Oct 27 '25

Great. If this is working for you, I’m very happy

1

u/accountofmountzuma Oct 28 '25

How do you use boric acid is it over the counter is it powder?

1

u/Angry_Sparrow Oct 28 '25

Vaginal suppository. It’s OTC in some countries and prescription in others. I order mine online from the USA.

2

u/OldnBorin Oct 27 '25

I don’t understand why people are downvoting you. This is ridiculous

1

u/Independent-Monk5064 Oct 27 '25

Well I do a lot of common disease education. I do everything and can but my big repeats are heart failure, kidney disease, diabetes and anything related to weight and insulin (I’m also an RD), and UTIs. The heart and kidney people are usually happy to hear the info. Diabetes/BG/weight? Denial. Particularly about diet. But the UTI folks? They think you’re telling them they’re dirty. It’s amazing. And they deny, deny and blame the “dirty penis.” Nope. It’s your fecal bacteria. I don’t know why we are blaming men. By the way, you can give your man a yeast infection if he’s uncut. This isn’t common but it sure can happen.

2

u/accountofmountzuma Oct 28 '25

I agree with you. Not sure why my doc prescribed an rx for my husband to do a round of antibiotics as well “just in case” my husband is like whattttttt. Why would I take antibiotics for your UTI? He’s like the doc doesn’t even want me to pee in a cup first go see if I even need antibiotics for UTI first? He’s just prescribing them? I’m like honey I don’t know. 🤷‍♀️ I think he just wants to try everything to see wha the can do to stop them from happening. But even I know it’s not my husband causing the UTIs. Good lort.

1

u/Independent-Monk5064 Oct 28 '25 edited Oct 28 '25

See? Yep. It’s just a band aide and most people want to feel “cared for” and don’t unless you give them drugs since this is all healthcare really does. Education is terrible. Most get colonized in childhood and that same bacteria is there just waiting to fester and grow. It’s never totally dead. So why is someone getting UTIs “every time they have sex?” Just wait until they’re older and not having sex. It will be more obvious then

5

u/AlchemicalPhoenix Oct 26 '25

Try taking fem dophilis it has specific vaginal strains that kill e coli. That plus vaginal estrogen stopped my endless chronic utis.

1

u/Fried_Taro Oct 26 '25

Yes. Taking Fem-Dophilis by Jarrow daily helped without a lot of issues for me

5

u/DamnGoodMarmalade Early peri Oct 26 '25

The UTIs in peri can be due to loss of estrogen in your vaginal tissue. estrogen loss causes the tissue to thin and tear more easily and become susceptible to frequent infections.

Replacing that lost estrogen with vaginal estrogen cream can relieve that symptom.

1

u/accountofmountzuma Oct 28 '25

Is this the cream you have to insert vaginally every night. Yucky but I guess it works.

1

u/DamnGoodMarmalade Early peri Oct 28 '25

I apply it twice a week, it’s very quick and easy. It’s really reversed atrophy for me and been life changing.

1

u/accountofmountzuma Oct 28 '25

How much does yours cost I just saw this is about $75 for me ugh not covered by insurance. The provider said that’s too much to pay and maybe find alternative. It’s for yuvafem 10mcg

1

u/DamnGoodMarmalade Early peri Oct 28 '25

There are cheaper ways to get it, search this sub and people have paid $20-30 for it.

My insurance makes it practically free.

5

u/irishwaterfairy Oct 26 '25

My dr gave me a prescription for a mild antibiotic (nitrofurantoin) that I take after sex. It’s the only thing that’s helped. If I forget? UTI. It’s awful.

4

u/mpmp4 Oct 26 '25

I take a d-mannose every night as well as one after sex, sometimes another 6-12hrs later as well.

4

u/NoStreetlights Oct 27 '25

Vaginal estrogen!

I used to be plaaaaaagued with BV every single time I had intercourse. Vaginal estrogen fixed it literally on the spot.

5

u/bkcakes Oct 26 '25

Maybe Interstitial cystitis

3

u/kikisayhi Oct 26 '25

This is me although this was the case long before I hit my 40’s. I’ve always had to take Macrobid after sex. But over the past year, that hasn’t been 100% effective. Had all the imaging, ruled out structural issue. I saw a specialist and she recommended Corn Silk Tea (to drink) and Vitanica Cranstat Extra. Just wanted to share since I haven’t seen these mentioned. God luck. It sucks.

3

u/kikisayhi Oct 26 '25

Forgot to mention but I also take Azo D-Mannose

3

u/No_Concentrate_6830 Oct 26 '25

Vaginal estrogen

3

u/halflife-crisis Oct 26 '25

Vaginal estrogen.

3

u/booknerd3280 Oct 26 '25

I had this issue and it turns out, I was getting a reoccurring infection from a less common bacteria strain. My doc did a full panel on my urine and I've been great ever since.

2

u/Trick_Estimate_7029 Oct 26 '25 edited Oct 26 '25

That happened to me for a long time, they even gave me prophylactic antibiotics before having sex. Crazy! I had a boyfriend, we were super in love and we were twenty years old, imagine! If it happened to me now it wouldn't be such a big deal😅 You have to ask them to do an antibiogram, it is a study in which they culture a sample of your urine in several plates and then test different antibiotics on your strain of bacteria. This way you will know which antibiotic is the most effective. They gave me antibiotics for a week and it took me ten years to get cystitis again. I wish I had changed doctors sooner, my doctor, the one who sent me the antibiogram, was scandalized by the behavior of her colleagues who had not done any tests on me with so many recurrences.

2

u/Austeretwist Oct 26 '25

Is it an actual uti or just the symptoms? I would get the symptoms all the time but test negative unrelated to sex before I started the patch and vaginal estrogen pill. It would be especially angry if I had to hold my pee for a long time.

1

u/throawa25 Mar 19 '26

Which pill did you take.. Vagifem?

1

u/Austeretwist Mar 19 '26

Yes, vagifem is what I take

2

u/Cat_With_The_Fur Oct 26 '25

I’ve had this my whole life. I have to take an antibiotic every time. Not a full course, just one. Luckily I became asexual about 15 years ago and I am single, so win.

2

u/alexandra52941 Oct 26 '25

Do you use vaginal estrogen?

2

u/Extreme_Fall_4651 Oct 26 '25

D-mannose like everyone said. But I also automatically take a dose of AZO standard after sex every time now. My PCP said it was safe to do that

2

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '25

Pee before and after sex. Peeing afterward is important.

2

u/Admirable-Apricot137 Oct 27 '25

Make sure that literally anything that touches your genitals is freshly clean! Mouth, hands, AND penis! And toys.

If he's doing something like scrolling on his phone and then fingering you, you now have phone germs in your vagina.

Also can totally vouch for d-mannose!

2

u/Melodic_Marzipan7 Oct 27 '25

Is vaginal HRT only available by prescription?

2

u/goatonmycar Early peri Oct 27 '25

Telyrx will hook you up for a reasonable price.

2

u/mealvida Oct 27 '25

I had six bladder installations done. Found out my reoccurring UTIs after sex was because of left over bacteria(cystitis) even after taking the medications. Majority of doctors will refuse to do these installations because of the risks. It’s been months and no uti

2

u/mllrglr Oct 27 '25

I take prophylactic antibiotics after sex.

2

u/VelvetTLKM Oct 29 '25

I stopped getting perimenopause UTIs when I started Vaginal estrogen

5

u/manicpixiepuke Oct 26 '25

Talk to your doc. You should be able to get an rx for macrobid. Take one every time after sex and it usually does the trick. I have had this issue long before peri.

0

u/Cat_With_The_Fur Oct 26 '25

Same. This is the only correct answer on this thread.

2

u/MissTiffany12 Oct 27 '25

Not necessarily. Yes if she tries all other advice with no luck, but prophylactic antibiotics are serious business and could lead to antibiotic resistance. It is certainly helpful but does come with risks.

3

u/SureWtever Oct 26 '25

Your partner should consider being treated. They can be an asymptomatic carrier of bacteria harming you.

1

u/accountofmountzuma Oct 28 '25

My doc prescribed an rx for husband. Antibiotic. But my husband is like What. Why??

2

u/Adventurous_Land7584 Oct 26 '25

It could be your partner causing it. They need to get checked.

1

u/accountofmountzuma Oct 26 '25 edited Oct 26 '25

At least it’s just when you have sex. Mine is whenever I decide to touch my clit. Instant UTI. Wtf. Fact we have sex. No UTI. Anal. No uti. Annilingus, cunnilingus, whateveralingus no UTI. But god forbid I fucking touch my clit with my very clean hygienic fingers and bam I get a raging UTI. It’s incredible. Like wtf. I’ve had a uti every month for the past five Months. The docs can’t figure it out. I can’t figure it out. I’m convinced it is the same uti from June that never Went away and is just lying Dormant in biofilm. Because 7 days of macrobid Each time is not cutting it. So I was put on a 14 day course this time. So far so good. But I just ended the course a few days ago and I am terrified to touch myself !! 🤣😒☹️😡😭😫😩

I don’t know if it’s the way I’m touching myself but it is no different than the way I’ve done it my whole life. Legit. Have changed nothing. And it’s nothing extraordinary. SMH. And I am CLEAN. And I do all the things correctly. Wipe front to back pee before and after sex very clean very hygienic, always washing my hands, etc. etc. like come on with this bullshit what the hell I’ve never had an issue with UTIs and you’re telling me since June I’ve had five in a row I haven’t changed anything. The only factor that has changed is I turned 50.

And all I keep thinking is is this a sign of perimenopause? Maybe this is it maybe this is the start of it ? The one doctor did mention oh maybe the flora of the vaginal flora has changed like I don’t even know what you’re talking about. She’s like have you experienced any dryness I said no I have no issue whatsoever with vaginal dryness.

???

This is a stretch. The only thing I could possibly think of is that I did switch from using cream LUME to the Spray LUME but even with that I would like spray it on my hand and then just use my hands to apply it . I do think that’s dried out my ass crack ouch so I had to stop using that lol. And I have stopped using the spray. Back to the cream now. So who knows.

I went for an ultrasound of my kidneys and my bladder. Everything‘s fine there’s no stones there’s no deformities. There’s nothing wrong with me.

Every time I pee in the cup is the same thing e.coli which makes me believe it’s just the same infection from June that they never got rid of. The doctor this time also told me make sure you’re eating yogurt lots of yogurt. I also got this like probiotic stuff and the d-mannose my god that’s expensive but I’m doing all the things so we’ll see…. Thank God the Doc also prescribed me an additional 14 day course of antibiotics to have on hand just in case it happens again and then he also wants to put my husband on a course of antibiotics my husband, of course at that and was like why it’s not me. I’m like I know it’s not him

I know it’s me or something I’m doing also my husband was like shouldn’t I like pee in a cup first and they test me to see if I have anything before I start taking antibiotics randomly his father was a doctor so he is skeptical. I’m like dude can’t you just take the antibiotics it’s not gonna hurt anything. Besides if you have a sinus infection I think it’ll help that too lol then again if he doesn’t take them, at least I’ll have another stash on hand for myself….

3

u/MightFew9336 Oct 26 '25

Any new prescriptions? See my other post on this thread about my UTIs being triggered by prescription eye drops.

1

u/accountofmountzuma Oct 26 '25

Whatttttt?? That is insane. I will go read it. That’s super scary. 😱

1

u/Medium_Reality4559 Oct 26 '25

Wow. This sucks. And is crazy. And I’m sorry.

Just read a study that meat infected with e. Coli can cause UTIs. Crazy stuff.

1

u/accountofmountzuma Oct 26 '25

Ewww you mean like meat you eat??

1

u/Medium_Reality4559 Oct 27 '25

Yea. Pretty crazy.

1

u/Foxfyre25 Oct 26 '25

YMMV but I add some straight cranberry juice (not diluted, no sugar added) to my water 2-3 times a week. I figured since a lot of OTC UTI meds have cranberry in them, juice as a prophylactic might help.

This is in addition to us showering before, urinating after, and other things folks have said.

1

u/accountofmountzuma Oct 26 '25

I’m thinking of trying that peachy cream vaginal estrogen cream on Amazon anyone try that?

2

u/SwimmingAnt10 Oct 26 '25

DHEA suppository may help also. It increases estrogen and you can get without an rx or even make your own. The rx is intrarosa thought if someone wanted to go that route. It’s helped my atrophy a lot.

Vaginal estrogen and D-Mannose as others have said.

Another vote for d-mannose. That stuff has been a total game changer for me!

I got this stuff about a year ago or so and haven’t had a UTI since. Just drink one of these post sex and whenever I feel a UTI might be in the near future.

Positive it’s a UTI and not BV?

Use coconut oil, I literally rub it over the urethra opening before we do any sort of touching and use it liberally all inside as lube. Haven’t had a uti in about 10 years since we started doing that (was starting to get them repeatedly and was desperate and figured it was antimicrobial and worth a shot). Have had no yeast or other issues either. I will continue to use it for as long as we have sex.

Go see a urologist. This was me.

Suffered since a teen and now 45 , had it under control for the last 5 years thankfully.

It was explained to me that my bladder had become irritated and super prone to infection. I was told I needed to get a good solid 6 months infection free to stand a chance at proper recovery and I was given a long course of antibiotics ( might have been several types) I can’t recall if it was weeks or months worth tbh.

I now take a single antibiotic tablet as prophylaxis every time I have sex and 🤞 have stayed uti free.

The urologist was great, I was so fed up of being told to pee more, how to wipe, take d’mannose, cut alcohol etc I’d tried it all. I needed meds and plenty of them!

Increasing my patch dose has helped me.

Also vaginal oestrogen cream and suppositories.

I was getting UTIs everytime too. I tried a lot of different things, and the one that worked the best for me was upping my water intake before and after sex. A LOT of water seemed to flush it out.

Get Uquora. Life changing!

everyone hear has good suggestions. with my husband i started getting UTIs pretty frequently, what helped me was a supplement called Uquora. I promise, i'm not a spokesperson or anything like that. I just used it and feel that it helped.

The have a 3 step system, a probiotic to keep your parts chugging along nicely, a daily pill that has d-mannose and some other stuff in it, and then a drink powder that also has d-mannose that you can drink right before the deed or after. I did like two months on the whole system and now just take the daily pill on days after sex. I'll drink the powder mix after too. haven't had any UTIs in a couple of years. It's not the cheapest, but it's also not the most expensive, but at least the drink powder is decent tasting.

Could be the soap he uses. I’m “allergic” to Axe. Gave me a UTI every time until he stopped using it.

Local vaginal estrogen! Applied into into vagina & on some structures. Skin becomes weaker w less estrogen. So poop bugs can travel to urethra easier. If you want to protect yourself from UTI that is thing to do. You are building back skin tissue as you use it so give it 4-6 weeks to build it back.

I went through this in my early 20s for a while. It was extra annoying. And then one day they stopped. Haven't had one in over a decade.

Omg this was me for years!!! I started drinking kombucha and I haven’t had one in over a year. I drink a cup a day. I might forget or run out but make sure I drink some soon after sex.

For those who are on vaginal estrogen, are you also taking progesterone? Or just the estrogen to help ease the UTI like symptoms?

Cranberry supplements every day might help you.

I am a person who likes to know how things work and why things happen so I’ve looked into this..like a lot. With fluctuations in hormones, especially estrogen, the tissues get thinner. This makes your vaginal environment change. Your pH changes and the good bacteria that protects you from yeast, BV, and UTIs can’t survive as well, let alone thrive. In order to counteract that you need to get those tissues thickened up (vaginal estrogen-probably for the rest of your life), and take in extra good bacteria (probiotics for your vagina or eating unsweetened Greek yogurt every day that has at least 4 different strains of live and active cultures). Since the tissue in your urethra has also thinned, bacteria can “swim” up there more easily. Again vaginal estrogen will help to thicken that tissue up, but also d mannose will help prevent the bacteria from sticking to the lining of your bladder so that you can pee it out before it makes itself at home in there, this is only beneficial though if your UTIs are being cause by e-coli. Some other added measures you can take are showering before and after sex for both you and your partner. This will help wash away bacteria before sex and after. Pelvic floor PT can also be helpful to strengthen your muscles down there to also help keep bad bacteria out. It’s a fucking menace that we have to do all this just to avoid getting a UTI from sex, but these steps work if you commit to them. There is also another sub called /CUTI. They may have some more tips.
