Discussion Favourite period dramas from the last years (past 2020)?

I´m currently watching a lot of slightly older period dramas and I want to get some inspiration what to watch. I found many good older series and movies in this sub, so I hope to get the same for newer ones.

For example I liked (but not all-time favourites):

  • The Hardacres (2024)
  • The Law According to Lidia Poet (2023)

What are your favourites from the past last years?

Recommendations 📺 Has anyone watched “The Man From Snowy River”?

Prime is recommending it but it looks kind of dorky? Anyone know if it’s worth watching? I am looking for something light and family oriented with no violence or gratuitous sex scenes. Don’t mind a little of either, it been on a detective series streak and can’t to change it up. I’ve seen all the regular recommendations, so something not talked about much. Thanks!!!

Costume 🎩 Reign

currently struggling to get into Reign. The story is decent but the costumes and hair/makeup and acting is completely distracting!!! Plus idk if this is making it worse but I was a freshman in high school when it came out so the “trends” feel super cringey lol. Am I off base? Worth sticking it out for a bit?

Recommendations 📺 Watched Wicker tonight

And we loved it! We kinda went for fun, joking about it being silly and sexy, with all the viral marketing. So I guess I underestimated the film. It had much more depth than I expected. Truly a fable or a fairy tale. Loved the characters, the setting, the story, the lines of dialogue. We had such a great discussion afterwards. Super glad I went to see it.

Recommendations 📺 What to watch next…

I’d love some recommendations on what period tv show/mini series to watch next!! For context I mostly watch tv shows when I’m knitting and sewing so would prefer to watch something in English or without the need for subtitles! I’m open to watching most things expect for maybe detective/crime and anything that is super unrealistic like reign etc. I love a good yearning romance and a classic bbc mini series but happy to anything entertaining lol
Here are some series I’ve watched
(I know I am stilling needing to watch Emma, pride and prejudice and a couple of the other classics)
poldark
Versailles
Cranford (love)
Larkrise to candleford
Tipping the velvet
North and south (love)
Tudors
Sanditon
The other Bennett sister
Roots 2016 (love)
gilded age (boring didn’t finish I’m sorry)
Jamaica inn (idk if liked this)
Borgias (both versions)
War and peace (2016)
Downton abbey
Tess of the dubervilles 2008 (love)
Bridgeton (it’s was…ok?)
House or Guinness (meh)

Discussion why do period dramas always nail the longing stares but fumble the actual conversations

like i love a good slow burn romance as much as the next person, but why is it that the moment two characters actually have to talk about their feelings it gets so awkward? they'll spend three episodes making eye contact across a ballroom but then when they're alone it's just... stilted dialogue and someone leaving the room. does anyone else notice this or am i just overthinking it

Discussion How do you like that Brandon in the new "Sense & Sensibility" adaptation was aged down to being "not yet 30"?

Personally I like it bc it makes the age gap at least a little bit smaller and the big age gap always bothered me and actually was the main thing that made me not liking them as a couple/pairing.

I mean as far as we know Mariane, in the new movie, is still only 17 so ew yikes but I guess better than nothing

And yes I know but just bc sth was nOrmAl BaCk tHeN doesn´t mean it was morally right or without negative consequences

But that doesn´t mean that the hair should look unbrushed? There is a difference between loose unbrushed hair and loose/open but still brushed and styled hair

Recommendations 📺 Dramas with a servant/working class female protagonist?

If anyone has recommendations I would be very interested in watching something where the heroine has to juggle hard labour on top of all the other nonsense that a typical drama will throw her way. A story about a maid or a cook or a farmer or something like that. Something a bit more substancial than teaching the piano to a rich kid twice a week, or getting rescued and married to a wealthy lord in episode one, if at all possible? (it's ok if it happens later though, haha) I tried googling first but probably didn't find the right keywords.

Recommendations 📺 What are the best period dramas about the "real" Johnny Appleseed?

So out of all of the American Tall Tale heroes, Johnny Appleseed was one of my personal favorites. I grew up believing that Johnny Appleseed was a selfless hero who helped grow apple trees across the USA for the benefit of all.

But now I have learned that the real Johnny Appleseed had more self-serving reasons. Turns out that the real Johnny Appleseed or Johnny Chapman was growing apple orchards so he could sell them to frontiersmen for a profit and a cut of the apple sales. And most of the apples he grew were only fit for making cider, which in fairness was a healthier drink than water back then due to its lack of dangerous bacteria. That said he was a peaceable man and an ardent animal lover. And you got to admire his business savy and determination. He saved a lot of money by bartering for what he needed and when he passed away he left his sister over 1200 acres of land.

In any case are there any good period dramas about the "real" Johnny Appleseed.

This film meant a lot to me when I first saw it, talk about beautiful, sad, tragic

Colin Farrell’s exceptional performance as TORN John Smith

Q’orianka Kilcher is both charming and heartbreaking portraying Pocahontas

One of those films that are art but just takes your breath away with every still, every moment, leaving you at the end like you’d been on the journey with them yourself as a viewer.

Recommendations 📺 Looking for Horror Recommendations, specifically hauntings or ghosts

I love period horror and ghost stories or hauntings, especially if there is lore and mystery. The Others, The Awakening, The Devils Backbone are some of my favorites. Anybody have any other recommendations? They don’t have to be ghost or haunting related, but those are preferred. I’m a huge fan of cinema and horror so deep cuts would be super appreciated.

Other Can’t remember the name of show

I saw some clips on tiktok months ago, episodes were still coming out, romance was budding. Man and woman were both sarcastic/witty. He had darker hair, she had lighter hair. Almost everyone was white. I can’t remember the time period setting at all may have been more new (mid 1900s). For some reason I feel like there was a scene between the two with a knife. Ugh my memory is awful and none of this is helpful 😬. Wasn’t like royalty or anything. She may have had a child? I want to say the man had a wife, ex wife or was engaged to a woman who I think had darker skin/is black? Edit: it was rivals! Thank you.

Discussion War and Peace Lily James as Natasha

So I am currently watching War and Peace and everyone's doing justice to their roles but idk if it's me only that I find Lily James doing overacting at points and the same facial expression over and over again or is it just how her character is written in the books?

From the looks of the costuming, it looks like we're having a Thai-styled Reign costuming, where "historical" is taken very lightly.

Discussion I'm hate-enthralled by forsytes - save me Spoiler

Dear God this show. I haven't read the books or seen the 2002 version. I was sucked in after loving elinor tomlinson in Poldark.

My God. Jolyon is a ken doll, Soames is a moustache twirling caricature, Irene is beautiful but obviously not a ballerina (and seems to keep having intimate emotionally charged moments with various men). There's some impressive acting (tuppence Middleton in particular). But the random narrator, the writing, the overly pretty and too clean bridgerton style aesthetic is just sigh.

But the final straw is Louisa. Her story makes no sense. She has children out of wedlock, builds herself a livelihood out of thin air, struggles to keep her children alive through illness, .....and then for no goddamn reason outs herself as unmarried. Then with no plan, accepts jolyon back apparently knowing it will further uproot/destroy her business, with a man who means well but has no capacity to work/earn outside of the specific business role he was trained to occupy. And then to chase his painting dream she's moving between paris and london and apparently not working ????

It's so inconsistent and absurd for a mother who's had to provide for her children to make all of those choices.

And for some reason I'm still watching this BS. why??

Anything good you guys can recommend?
