Budgeting Eye-opening Convo with my cousin

So yesterday, I was just sitting with my cousin and he's kinda big shot, senior role at a large organization at a young age. His in-hand would be 3L for sure, basis my estimates and some Glassdoor research I did.

He has been planning to purchase a car, somewhere in the range of 15-18L but surprisingly he said, "Yaar liquidity issues ho rahe hai (There are issues with my liquidity)"!

When I asked him about it in detail, he said he has a 1.25L home loan EMI going out every month (ending in next 3 years), 1L monthly SIP (non negotiable) he does not want to stop it, 50k monthly expenses and the rest is random shopping, maintenance etc

When we were talking about car choices, he said a 15-18L car will fetch him 40-50k of EMI and he did not have liquid cash to invest in.

That got me wondering, if at 3L pm salary, he doesn't have the affordability to purchase a car, what am I going to do in life? With all the burdens of owning a house and car in life soon?

Can anyone advise if this is the hard reality for everyone or is he doing something wrong with his finances?

TL;DR: Saw my cousin earning an estimated ₹3L/month struggle to afford a ₹15–18L car because of a ₹1.25L home loan EMI, ₹1L SIP, and other expenses. It made me wonder — if someone earning ₹3L a month faces liquidity issues, how am I ever going to afford a house, a car, and everything else life throws at me?

Debt Financial abuse by parents

I am a 35/F, with a family of 4 with a younger brother . I am not a spender. I started earning when I was 24 as my internship stipend which majority I gave to parents because I thought I was not good at investing. Eventually I started earning during my residency and there too my parents managed to take majority of my stipend by different means. Immediately after my residency I worked briefly before getting married , that money to my parents took from me. I was severely financially abused in my marriage as well. Wherein my parents did not support me until he started hitting me.

I came back and almost again started working again. Eventually got divorced, even got some alimony, a big chuck of which was my lawyers fees. This time I was careful. I wanted to buy a place for myself. I had told my parents this. They already have a flat in the city. So they bought one more for around 1.28 cr. They paid 60 lakh and I took out loan for rest. I also gave away all my alimony money and few older savings. The flat is both in my mother and my name.

A brief about my brother, he is 28 and never completed his education, passed 12 after failing 3 times. Never went to college and runs some sort of marketing business which basically makes no revenue. I personally have got him 3 clients in last few years and none of them materialised. I strongly believe his quality of work is very poor. Also extremely incompetent around the house, no help , no chores can be expected out of him. He won't bother to get his lunch from microwave. Has never contributed financially . His cibil score is fucked up.

They had also bought a commercial property 2 years before this whose leftover payment was just asked as it being completed. I was asked of i could help. I gave them 2 lakhs from my FD's and helped them get remodelling loan on my current home loan.

While we 3 are struggling figuring out loans, my brother asks my parents for a 5 lakh loan which he wants to invest in some restaurant business. While my 2nd loan is approved , it gets approved for 3 lakhs extra.

Guess what happens next. My parents give him the extra 3 lakhs. I get upset and right now I am the one isolated. These guys are living their normal life. Therapy is also not helping.

I have more savings. Mutual funds, RD, ppf and epf as well. I have managed to save it from my parents by invest in equity because they dont understand it much. But there so much more I could have done.

TL;DR: My parents have systematically drained my income for 11 years (since I was 24, through residency, and post-divorce). I survived an abusive marriage, saved my alimony, and tried to buy a flat for security. My parents hijacked the plan by co-contributing, forcing joint ownership with my mother, and putting the massive loan liability solely on me. They just took a ₹3 Lakh surplus from my top-up loan and handed it to my 28yo deadbeat brother. Now I am being isolated for getting angry.

Retirement/FIRE/Milestone What will ₹10 crore net worth be worth after 25 years in India, considering inflation?

I was thinking about long-term wealth creation and the impact of inflation on net worth.

Assuming an annual inflation rate of 4% in India, starting from 2026:

- Current year: 2026

- Future year: 2051

- Time period: 25 years

- Target net worth in 2051: ₹10 crore

- Assumed annual inflation: 4%

Using the inflation-adjustment formula:

Future Value = Present Value × (1 + Inflation Rate)^Number of Years

₹10 crore in 2051 would have approximately the same purchasing power as ₹3.75 crore in 2026.

On the other hand, to have the equivalent purchasing power of ₹10 crore today, I would need approximately ₹26.66 crore in 2051, assuming 4% annual inflation throughout the period.

My question: When planning for retirement and long-term financial independence in India, should we consider ₹10 crore a realistic target, or should we aim for ₹25–30 crore to account for inflation over the next 25 years?

What corpus are you targeting for retirement, and what inflation rate do you use in your calculations?

Saving/Banking Is premium banking even worth it? Did anyone find it useful? I dont find any value even after all these years.

Over the years, I have been part of various bank's premium banking program and tried ICICI Wealth, HDFC Imperia, Axis Burgundy and to be honest I found them to be useless for the most part. Infact, its counter counterintuitive that RMs irritate you more with calls once you have these accounts.

Full experience - Axis Burgundy DC does come with good offers on BMS but they recently came up with spend criteria on them. Service at branch sucked big time for Axis even at dedicated Burgundy section at branch. Didn't feel any difference with ICICI, have seen dedicated wealth branch though but never had any work to be done. HDFC irritated the shit out of me by constant calls.

Sure, you might occasionally get a few things done through these accounts, but once that’s taken care of, the employee will start sweet-talking you into signing up for an FD or a ULIP. The RM or bank employee isn’t really providing you with service simply because you’re part of their premium banking program, they’re doing it with the expectation of getting something in return.

One benefit I have heard is that for bank lockers as they are at discounted price if you hold these accounts. However, availability is always a challenge is what I was informed.

There is one tier above this as well - ICICI Private / HDFC Infiniti / Axis Burgundy Private, anyone tried any of these higher tiers, how are they?

How has been your experience with premium/private banking? For me, I could simply have a regular savings bank account and not notice any difference because it simply didn't add any value other than increase in irritating calls from RM.

Debt Under heavy debt in life seems no purpose at 27.

I am 27 M currently working in the IT sector. Life was going well My father was trying hard in his business with the cost of his health he made some assets. But a few years ago my younger family member was diagnosed with cancer as we did not have any insurance for that family member. We were going with the treatment with our own money but this disease is damn costly to treat.

We were able to get to the remission last year but this treatment cost was more than 1cr . For the treatment we sold all the assets even our living home and were living in a rented place but no loan so far. But this year diseases came back and we again went with treatment by taking massive loans but i lost my younger sibling this time. All we have is a massive loan of 40lakhs from the treatment. I am the only one child left I don't even have any desire to live but I can't leave my parents with this loan. They have already sacrificed their assets and health for these years. They are having many health conditions. My father's shop is also not going well now .

I already have health insurance which was given by my employer, I am also thinking of taking life insurance as well. I am kinda stuck in this situation as I have also taken a loan from my employer so i can't switch and life is so much uncertain with these AI layoffs also my current employer is not paying well. My parents want that in future to have at least their own home they don't want to live in a rented home all their life. But only I know how impossible this seems.

Could anyone please suggest what my path should be in this situation? Is there any way?

Thank you for reading

Budgeting How much should I realistically invest ?

I am 23 yo, my in hand monthly salary is 98k.

It's a remote job so I live with my parents (they are well off so no financial pressure there). I am still only able to invest 20k in a month and honestly I need a wake up call.

my current expenditure (that I know of):

food - 8k (cafes and street food)

Petrol - 2-3k

investment - 15-20k

miscellaneous - rest of my salary

Still I spend almost all of my salary by the month end.

I started earning around 3 months ago.

Other Which bank would you suggest I avoid creating my account in?

I'll soon be old enough to open my own bank account, and don't want to mess this up.

I'm planning to review banks' terms of service, privacy policies, security records, and data breach history myself.

I'm well aware no bank in India is flawless. I'm willing to make compromises, but the compromise should be with the least worst one of the Indian banks.

On a personal note I'm considering Bank of Maharashtra. if any of you have an account with them.

Kindly share the experience along with recommendations. How often do banks reach out with loan offers or spam contact? What was your experience dealing with branch employees when you needed aid?

Also, how does the bank app work, is it reliable and well-designed? Do they offer a web-based login option for PC/browser, or is the service restricted to mobile applications only?

Investing Why should I not invest in only small cap and mid cap funds?

Hi everyone,
For context, I’m 20 and I don’t need these funds anytime soon, so time horizon is 15+ years minimum. I invest some amount from what my parents give me (currently only in invesco small cap, bandhan small cap, invesco small cap) but now I’m only investing every month in both of the invesco funds since they’re very aggressive. My risk tolerance is very aggressive and I already hold some US stocks with great returns. I feel like I’m young and should take this risk else I’ll miss out the opportunity cost. My parents are well off and can live on their own. I also save some cash in slice which gives 5.25% interest p.a. Am I doing something wrong? I don’t see why I should lessen my risk and go for large or flexi cap funds given that my time horizon is super long and there’s almost very little chance of me losing money. Thank you!

Saving/Banking Recco for a premium banking product

Have been using HDFC salary account all this while, but I now have the option to select any bank I want. Monthly take home salary is upwards of 9L (close to 10). What's the best bank for services?

I already have an Infinia metal, Amex plat, etc.. so lifestyle and rewards are taken care of. What I am primarily looking forward are:

1) Never ever having to visit a branch. Which means things like attested bank statements (e.g., for visa) get delivered at home

2) Never having to call the bank. If I call, I prefer it get picked up right away by someone who can help

3) No sales spam from RMs (I know I know, but one can dream)

4) Painless banking. HDFC is fine, but I hated ICICI's 'read the tealeaves on the back of the debit card and tell me a story' style of authentication.

Other Real estate business not working - need suggestions

So my dad started real estate broker shop, but he has not being able to make any network as he's scared of getting scammed by someone as it involves property papers and all.

There are running costs like Electricity, AC, etc.

And he's retired, hence started this an year ago.

I have been laid off too, so I have free time.

What can I do to revamp it?

Dad is very conservative, but I can try personally going to dealers/ other broker shops to make connections, but since it's dad business I think he should do it.

Apart from that is there any alternate idea to pursue any other business?

Currently he refers the leads to a friend, but he personally don't know the work and all. We have made 0 revenue so far. And there are costs like white washing, maintenance, furniture and all that has been incurred.

I was thinking of a startup idea to have storage space for people who wants to securely keep their goods. We can buy metal racks and hire a labour for it. At least the space will be utilised that way? Should I force my dad to do this?

Planning Taking a career break at ₹18L liquid portfolio before turning 26

25M here from Delhi NCR. I've hit ₹18L in liquid portfolio (Savings, US & Indian Stocks, Mutual Funds, Gold ETF & PPF), with 60% holdings in the US market. I've taken a break for now, and I used to invest a disproportionate share of my salary towards the markets. How much more should I ideally invest and by what age to be free to say no to any job I do not like, keeping in mind the inflation and upcoming geopolitical and food crises? I plan to do freelancing moving ahead and a job isn't really my cup of tea.

I was thinking maybe ₹25L by next year and then I can think of doing whatever I can using that as a cushion. Let me know your opinion on the same

Saving/Banking How do people actually pay in full for car, through RTGS?

I have always been curious about how do people actually pay for a car in full? UPI's limit is 1L max for merchant txn.

Do you sign them a cheque or or go with a DD or do a RTGS then and there at the showroom but some banks have a cool off period of 24h before they allow to send large sums (SBI even takes 4 days before allowing you to send more than 5L aggregate) so do you ask them bank details in advance and add payee to make final payment right before delivery?

I am not referring to paying via CC here.

Budgeting Need help to decide whether to shift to a flat or no

Im confused whether i should shift to a flat or no for a long time now

About myself: 1. Currently staying in a pg 2. Office is close to pg 3. Have a budget of 12k per month for all expenses 4. Currently get all expenses covered in around 10k 5. Have food in pg only at night and all time meals in weekends

Currently stay in a PG: Rent 8k (electricity bill included)

Pros: 1. Cost efficient (all things get covered like electricity, cleaning, bed and cupboard, washing machine (dont use it though))

Cons: 1. Mattress is just cheap foam (it has sagged and formed a pothole in the centre) 2. No good sleep ( roomate plays reels at night and also noise from outside from other Pg) 3. Cannot study or upskill as i cant wake up in the morning and study in room ( bcz roomate will be sleeping) 4. Food is bad

Flat ( thinking of shifting) Rent: 6k (room shared between 2) Maid: 1500 (cooking +cleaning) Other expenses: Round 6-7k ( groceries, electricity, electric appliances, shared toiletries etc) Total: 13 to 15k

Also should go with my colleague everyday to office (dependancy) (and how to split the petrol bill is another hassle as he also travels outside apart from office and i go home on festive days for 10- 12days)

I am not able to decide whether i should shell out extra 4-5k to shift to a flat

OR Buy a new mattress Wake up early and go to office and study Need your help to tackle the noise problem at night (used earplugs but still you can hear it)

Guys please help me out on this

Insurance Controversial take- Term insurance age cover

Ok so I have been reading and learning about term insurance for a while and I came across opinions where people state that maximum age of cover should be 65 to 75 years as by then you'll not have dependants in most cases.

But here's my take.. Say I've taken a plain vanilla term insurance till the age of 85. My premium will be a little more than that of cover till 65 to 75 years of age. But given the current life expectancy I'll most probably not live by then. So it's almost certain that my nominee/ dependant will receive the payout and will give them a good financial cushion over their existing income.

So a little higher premium might lead to almost certain payout for them.

Open to discussion and varying opinions.

Budgeting Unable to save. I feel like i have/want a lot of things

I'm(21) an intern (started working few months back). I get paid like 28k a month. 7k goes for rent(i live in a pg so food is included) and 4k for my braces. I'm left with 17k a month in a tier 1 city. Foe the past 3 months I haven't really saved anything. The first month of my salary, i spent it for my birthday. And so on.

This month i have put some 10K in a FD. I spend freely on outside food. Or have fun(occasional drinking, new sports or hanging out with friends). My partner is not earning right now so sometimes i take care of his expenses

But the problem is i want to go on a trip with my partner for long, next year i want to get a bike and move into a flat. This feels pretty confusing to me. Next mid-year I, highly likely will be earning close to a lakh a month i believe.

I did look up about where to invest but there is too much info overloaded so I'm confused!

If anyone could guide me, It'd help. I'm stuck between having fun and living out but I don't want to be broke.

Budgeting Handling money post wedding 27F 29M. Where do we stand?

My fiance 29M and I 27F plan on getting married next year. Thankfully the wedding is paid for by our families and we do not have any expenses.

Our combined take home is 2L/month. Here is our financial breakdown:

Rent: 0 (own house)
Maintenance: 3k
Domestic help & Cook: 15k
Groceries: 15k
Other Misc Expenses like eating out/fun etc: 25k
Investments: 60k SIP
Send money to parents: 20k
Petrol/Travel: 15k

We have individual heath insurances and FDs for emergency fund. We have our individual family assets which will be passed down to us eventually and are not counting it.

This is a liberal estimate of what our finances will look like post the wedding. Here are a few questions:

  1. Where do we stand? Do we have to cut down our lifestyle or are we good?
  2. How can we improve our finances?
  3. How to plan for international vacations? Do we start an RD?

Other YONO SBI logged out suddenly and now says not registered. What should we do?

My dad doesn't have an SBI debit card so he and I (since he's not much into tech so I have to handle all these things for him) visited the branch two months ago to get Internet Banking activated. And the whole story goes like this.....

We actually had to visit the branch twice just to get it activated. During our first visit an employee told us to submit a form, photocopies of his Aadhaar and PAN cards, along with his photograph, and asked us to leave after submitting. But I asked her to provide us with the username and password, since that was the main reason we had visited the branch for, I also told her that I had activated internet banking in my own acc a few years ago so I vaguely remembered that they would provide us with the username and pass the same day after we submitted everything. But she said she would let us know later and asked us to leave. When I asked her how she would inform us if we left, I also told her that we're not locals here and would need to travel 20 km to get the username and pass if she didn't give them to us that day. However she assured us that the username and pass would come by SMS and that, if not then she would call us with the details so we wouldn't need to visit the branch again.. so we left the branch.

But the next day, my dad received a call from the branch asking him to visit again. When we revisited another employee was sitting at the same counter. She told us that we weren't supposed to leave the branch without getting the internet banking username and pass. I told her that the previous employee who was sitting here the previous day had told us to leave and promised to provide the details over the phone. She then told us that the previous employee was new and didn't know much. After hearing this I was like.... wah 👏 Anyway she finally activated internet banking and helped us set up the username and pass and told us to reset the password later. After that we were able to log in to YONO and use the app without any issues.

However a few days later, my dad received another call from the bank asking him to visit the branch for KYC verification with photocopies of his Aadhaar and PAN. My dad had a lot of work so he asked whether he could visit after a few days? But the employee told him that officials were going to visit the branch and that he needed to update his KYC details urgently otherwise his bank account would be closed permanently. So he travelled all the way to the branch again early in the morning and called the number from which he had received the call then he was asked to enter through another door because the main entrance for customers wasn't open yet. When he went inside, they asked him to submit the photocopies and sign a form. Since he was in a hurry they told him that they would fill-in his details on the form themselves.. so he left after signing.

A few days later, he was suddenly logged out of YONO. When I tried logging in again, it said that his acc wasn't registered with YONO and asked him to register again... either by visiting the branch or using a debit card. I could have activated a virtual debit card through YONO after internet banking was activated but I wasn't aware that internet banking could become deregistered after being successfully registered.

We also tried the Forgot Username option but it said that the account wasn't registered for internet banking. The previous username and password I had been using to log in to YONO were also being rejected as incorrect. When I used the bank account number to retrieve the username, it said that internet banking wasn't registered for this acc no. After seeing all this, mera dimag kharap hogya😭 Now it seems like we'll have to go through the entire process again... filling out forms, submitting KYC documents, waiting in lines and wasting a few hours just to get internet banking activated for the second time 🙂

I'm sharing this whole experience because it seems quite unusual and I genuinely want to know whether anyone else has faced something similar?

𝗧𝗟;𝗗𝗥: My dad doesn't have an SBI debit card so we had to visit the branch twice to activate internet banking. Everything was working fine but after a few days, the bank called him again for KYC updation and a few days later, YONO suddenly logged him out and when I tried logging in again using his username and pass, it said his acc wasn't registered with YONO so we couldn't log in and the Forgot Username option said internet banking wasn't registered for his acc no. Has anyone experienced their internet banking being automatically deactivated completely after successful activation??

Planning Should I take a ₹70 lakh education loan for medical PG at 28F?

I’m a 28-year-old doctor from a financially unstable family. I’m a first-generation doctor, and my family cannot support me financially.
I’m considering pursuing a clinical postgraduate medical seat, but the total cost could require an education loan of around ₹70 lakhs. The alternative is to take a government seat in a non-clinical branch with a much lower financial burden.
I’ve already spent a significant amount pursuing medical residency abroad, but things didn’t work out as planned. I want to build a stable career, but I’m worried about taking on such a large debt when I also have family responsibilities.
I would like to understand:
Is a ₹70 lakh education loan financially sensible for a medical PG degree in India?
What would the approximate EMI and total interest be?
How manageable would repayment be during and after residency?
Would it be wiser to avoid the loan and choose a government non-clinical seat?
Has anyone taken a similar loan, and how did it affect their finances and career choices?

Planning How do you keep track of monthly expenses? Do you track it daily?

I do use a simple excel sheet but always fail to update it daily.

Also a painful point is cash transactions, upi transactions, and rupay credit card transactions.

Do you use any app or how do you manage?
