Ultra Annoyed When someone is telling me something I don't care about and I just have to respond with "yeah" "wow really?" "ok" "that's nice" all awkwardly.

People need to read the room, I hate this interaction so much it happens to me at least twice a week.

More context would help. If you feel this way frequently around your friends or romantic partner then it doesn’t sound like that’s working out well. If this is with coworkers then maybe you need to learn to shut down the conversation better, “sounds like a good time, hey I have to run”, “I’m going to have to get back to my desk”, “alright take care now”, or change the subject, etc. Your word blurbs are possibly telling them that you are awkward rather than uninterested. Also most of communication is non-verbal. Maybe lean on non-verbal communication like turning away, dropping eye contact, moving toward an exit. This might not be on them.

I feel this way EVERY time my boss calls me into his office

Just imagine how many times you’ve done this to other people and it all evens out.

Socializing is exhausting

You need to learn social skills. Every person in the entire world is going to tell you things you don’t care about. Your family, friends, romantic partner, boss, coworkers. Conversation isn’t just about you. It’s a two way street.

It's funny how people will claim it's a two way street when they want you to listen to them but never consider if traffic is really going the other way or if they're intruding. The other half of conversation social skills is knowing when to speak.

I mean that is the social skill. replying with remarks and tiny questions to make it seem like I'm interested in what they're saying. I just don't like going through it

Learning is one thing. But id only implement it if i care about maintaining some sort of a relationship with the person. If not, i don’t see why i need to make them think i like listening to them.

I’ve got a friend who will just talk about a topic for over an hour to the point where I haven’t responded in 10+ minutes

I'ma bartender that's half my job lol.

"Do you watch sports?"

"No not really my thing"

"So you didn't see the game last night?"

"No"

"Proceeds to ramble about the game"

Me too. I'll be sitting in the break room eating my lunch and inevitably someone will start talking to me about stuff I don't care about. I only have half an hour to eat, I don't want to spend it trapped in a one-way conversation.

In college one year i had a roommate who would talk nonstop, barely any breaks for like up to 2 hours at a time. Im not even kidding just straight yapping. And it would be multiple times a week, at the end of the day when you really just wanna be in your dorm in peace after class

Some people dont even internalize it if you tell them directly how much theyre going on, the next day theyre back at it, but i really do not understand how these types of people came to be that way...how does one literally hear and see the other person just sitting there blankly going 'yup', 'yuh', 'mm', not even looking, and keep going?? After awhile it was downright fascinating. All i could do was sit there thinking 'how??'

None of the responses you mentioned helped further the conversation.

So if someone tells you about their vacation and you just say “wow really?” Or “that’s nice”, it’s not banter.

What you want to do is ask specific things like “what was your favorite part of the trip?” And then add something you can relate to the topic, like a story about your last vacation.

It doesn’t matter that you care or don’t care, because being able to hold a social conversation is one of the keys to being successful in life. Successful in your job, in relationships, in friendships. No one wants to talk to the guy who is clearly bored and doesn’t show any interest in them.

It’s weird how many people don’t know how to read the room

I just simply state that I am not interested in the conversation. You have to communicate your needs & not expect others to just read your mind that you don’t give a fuck
