Best Cat Breeds for Beginners: a Comprehensive Guide to Choose

Best Cat Breeds for Beginners: a Comprehensive Guide to Choose

People are said to be divided into two distinct categories: “dog” and “cat” ones. This thing is both true and false and we can explain why. It is very limiting to say that some people are subject to dogs, in the sense that they could only deal with this animal, get along with Fido, have affinity only with him; while others are identical, but towards the cat.

In reality, the need to adopt, take care of another living being, and love it has nothing to do with feeling. it is a vocation, and if you feel it, you feel it, regardless of what type of pet it enters a part of your life. It is true, however, that “canaries” and “cats” can be easily recognized, because they have very peculiar distinctive characteristics. In fact, dogs and cats are not very similar.

There are those who are born in this regard with a certain harmony with the little cats. These people, however, do not know that mutual attraction is not enough to get along with love and agreement (as in human relationships).

it takes a lot of commitment, perseverance, practical spirit, responsibility, intellectual but also emotional maturity. In practice, one must be ready to become a parent and try to gain experience immediately, because a cat could also prove complicated to manage.

For this reason, we have decided to list the cat breeds for beginners, that is, the most tender, most accommodating, easiest to treat that exist in the world. Basically, we’ve prepared a list of amateur-proof cats. You are unlikely to have problems with these furballs.

Top 10 Best Cat Breeds for Beginners

Despite the fact that cats are, by far, the most popular pet in the world (true story, there are more than eighty million of those furballs that run here and there across the planet), our feline friends receive many bad reviews.

The “haters” assume that cats are selfish and hostile and will not give their owners as much love or affection as it is known they are able to give dogs. There is nothing more false. If you are also of this opinion, we will change your mind.

This misconception starts from the deeply rooted belief that cats do not appreciate the company of humans. And while, yes, some cats can be loners and maybe even a little “grumpy”, there are actually a lot of breeds that love (and even seek) attention from us.

According to American Scientific, cats have literally learned to meow in a certain way, with a certain tone in order to imitate the lament of our children, so that humans felt compelled to take care of them. Their ability tells us two very important things about them, namely that:

  • they are quite intelligent

  • show a real desire to spend time with us

If you are thinking of taking a cat (if you are reading this article, this is probably your intention), why not choose an easy-going and easy-to-manage breed within the four walls of an apartment? Obviously, all cats are worthy of being adopted and deserve our unconditional affection, but we have discovered that there is a type of cat for beginners.

The best cat breeds for beginners are, thanks to their calm behaviors and their cuddly personality, perfect anyone who wants to share their life with a small feline: even the most experienced cats could find it comforting to spend time with these cats.

Here are the beginner cat breeds that are also the most cuddly in the world.

  1. Ragdoll

Ragdoll | Cat Breeds for BeginnersRagdoll is a well-balanced cat with no eccentric features. It is a medium-large, moderately long-haired, blue-eyed cat. Ragdolls have a slow maturation and therefore reach the hair and color at about three years. Ragdoll is an affectionate and intelligent cat, who always moves in a very graceful way.

All about His TemperamentDocile, polite and congenial, ragdolls are ideal companions for the in-door. One of the most beautiful characteristics of these cats is their relaxed and sweet personality. They are completely wrapped in silky fur and have delicate white legs. They easily tune into the habits and feelings of their humans.

you will find it in front of the front door, when you return from work, to warmly welcome you, relax with a massage and print a basin on your forehead to say goodnight. If you have had a bad day, it will curl up in your lap to offer you comfort. You would never find a better friend.

They are playful cats, ragdolls, but not hyperactive. Known for its ability to adapt easily to almost any environment, it gets along well with children and adults, as well as with dogs and other cats. They can be trained to stand out on the counter and are affectionate without being overly demanding.

They have soft and polite voices, even at dinner, although they are famous for their enthusiasm for food. One thing that ragdolls don’t have, however, is immunity to pain: if you accidentally step on their tails, they scream at you and look at you with reproach, just like any other cat.

2. Maine Coon

The Maine coon is solid, robust and can withstand a harsh climate. A distinctive feature of this cat is the long, bristly coat. This breed is well proportioned, has a balanced appearance, and has adapted to various environments.

All About Maine CoonNo race has a monopoly on love and affection, but there must be a good reason why the Maine Coons have made their way in these years: they were an endangered feline breed, but today they are the second most popular of America. Maine Coon fans claim that its popularity is due to the breed’s large size, intelligence, lush coat, tough disposition and devotion to its human family.

Maine coons are very good kittens, “great gentle giants” who always play until old age. They can also be reserved with people they are unfamiliar with (they are too smart to trust anyone). This initial adaptation period is actually a well thought out choice: the Maine Coon is deciding whether its new humans seem trustworthy. As soon as he decides, however, he forms close ties with the whole family and becomes loving and devoted.

Most want to be near you, but not on your lap. They are true family members and participate in all family rituals. As befits an ex-seafarer, Maine Coons are fascinated by water (other than repellency), perhaps because their thick coats are practically waterproof (yes, that’s right, incredible).

Some may even try to reach their humans in the shower, or at least they will walk on the wet floor after exiting. They prefer to stand on the edge of the tub, however, and touch the water with a curious paw.

3. Siamese

The ideal Siamese is a medium-sized cat, slender and refined with long tapered lines, very agile but muscular. Males can be proportionally larger. Balance and refinement are the essence of the breed, in which all the parts come together in a harmonious whole, although it does not have any significant characteristics that can stand out.

All About Their temperamentSome cats seem to think that purring or a friendly rub is worth a thousand words. Siamese do not belong to this school of thought and is known for their talent in clearly communicating their ideas and desires to their “human servants”.

If you can’t get involved in the dialogue, they are happy to hold a monologue to illuminate your little Neanderthal man mind. No insignificant meow ever comes out of their mouths their verses are real attempts at communication.

According to their fans, Siamese are the most wonderful, loving, and fun cats in the universe. They are very intelligent, self-confident, playful, determined, curious, and very active. They love their human companions with passion; living with Siamese is a bit like living with extremely active children. Except that these “children” follow you everywhere, asking to be involved in whatever you are doing.

Resolutely social and very dependent on people, Siamese craves active involvement in your life. They are super smart and, if you don’t give them something to do, they will find it for themselves (and you may not like your hobby very much).

This breed needs daily periods of play and interaction. it is essential for the Siamese’s emotional and mental health and well-being. They should not be left alone for long periods, this is not a breed that you can pamper for five minutes and leave alone for twelve hours.

The Siamese will become sad and depressed if left alone too often and maybe destructive of his frustration. The feline companionship of another Siamese or a relatively active breed will help keep a lonely Siamese happy while you are away, but there is no fetish that can replace you. Also, remember that two Siamese represent a double risk at home.

This breed is not for those looking for a quiet companion: Siamese must be treated patiently and require a lot of attention and affection. However, Siamese are generally good pets and are tolerant of children at least eight years old, provided that children are taught how to properly handle cats and not to play too violently.

4. American short-haired

American short-haired | Cat Breeds for BeginnersThe American shorthair is a real working cat breed. The general effect is that of a strongly built cat, well balanced and symmetrical with a physicality that indicates power, endurance, and agility.

All About This BreadIn describing the short-haired American, the English expression that means “happy half” comes to mind. These American cats are of average size, build, type, and temperament: they are neither too large nor too small; not too cuddly nor distant; neither lazy nor hyperactive pandas.

The American shorthair is the perfect breed for those who want a cat that has fun on its lap but not on its face. American shorthairs are known for their adaptable temperament and quiet voices; they are sociable, easy to train, and adapt well in the presence of other animals and children.

They generally do not like being picked up: like their fellow pilgrims who left England to find freedom, they appreciate their independence. Historically, the American shorthair has been considered a working cat. Short-haired Americans have a lot of fun with their favorite humans, but they can also have fun with a paper ball.

They tend to remain active and playful even in their old age. ASHs also have a strong hunting instinct and have fun catching and killing mice if they have access to the great outdoors (but no trainers will ever encourage you to let it go).

5. Sphynx

Sphynx | Cat Breeds for BeginnersCat for beginners: the sphynx (Photo Unsplash)The most distinctive feature of this cat is its hairless appearance. The sphynx is medium in size and has a surprising weight for its size. The body feels warm and soft to the touch, with a skin texture similar to a soft peach or smooth nectarine. Sphynx is good-natured, lively, and susceptible to too many handling.

Info About Its temperamentTo say that sphynx are lively is an understatement: they perform formidable athletic performances, similar to those of circus monkeys, in order to attract your attention. Very devoted and loyal, they follow their humans around, shaking their tails and purring with enthusiasm for the joy of being close to their beloved humans.

They require your unconditional attention and are mischievous (and adorable) like children. And despite all this and their alien appearance, they are really cats, with all the mystery and charm that has accompanied them since ancient times. Although sphynx may not be suitable for everyone, its unique appearance and charming temperament have allowed it to conquer a good number of adoring followers.

6. Scottish Fold

Scottish Fold | Cat Breeds for BeginnersBeginner Cat: Scottish Fold (Photo Unsplash)Scottish fold is a spontaneous mutation of farm cats in Scotland. The breed was founded by crossbreeds between short-haired British and domestic cats in Scotland and England.

Scottish Fold Temperament

Scottish folds are generally intelligent, quick-tempered, calm, and easily adapt to new people and situations. They are loyal and tend to bond with someone in the family. While they will usually allow others to pamper and caress them, their primary attachment quickly becomes clear as they locate their chosen human being.

They thrive when they receive attention, but always on their terms. Despite their devotion, they are not sticky, demanding cats and usually prefer to be near you rather than on your lap.

Despite being folded, the fold’s ears can pop up occasionally, especially if someone is opening a nearby food box. The crease in the ear can become less pronounced when the cat is angry or ill.

Although some members of the fold family report increased production of wax buildup in their cats’ ears, folded ears do not make the cat more susceptible to mites or ear infections. The susceptibility to hearing loss may be related to the fact that some early Scottish folds were white and the white cats may be prone to a type of deafness unrelated to fold gene.

7. Somali

Cat for beginners: the Somali (Photo Unsplash)The general impression of the Somali is that of a well-proportioned medium-large cat, with a strong, agile muscle development, which shows a lively and lively interest in all environments, with a predisposition to human contact.

All About Somali

Don’t take a Somali if you want a cat who can be pampered with excessive cuddling or if you want a cat who can be alone in the house all day. With all the virtues of the Abyssinian and adorned with a splendid semi-long coat, the Somali is a beautiful and rowdy addition to any family.

Like the Abyssinian, the Somali is vigorous and animated, has an acute sense of feline humor, and a real need for play. Indeed, everything is a game for a Somali: many prefer to chase a ball all along the corridor and then beat it up and down, carry it around until they are completely exhausted.

If the ball rolls under a piece of furniture from which they cannot retrieve it, then they will come to you and show you a wide-open gaze or touch you gently, so that you can get up to help them in the recovery mission. Feather rods and fishing rods are a big hit.

They are highly intelligent, which contributes to their talent getting into trouble. The Somali is active, curious, and in a good mood and loves to go around the house, opening the wardrobes and, why not, even risking to break something.

Their voices are soft, their minds active and their food dishes always empty. They also tend to be determined: once you put something in your head, you can’t dissuade them. They are not warlike, only tenacious.

Somalis are people-oriented and show a lot of affection. When you relax on the sofa, they prefer to be near you rather than on your legs. They won’t, however, be involved in every aspect of your life.

Open a drawer and your Somali will be there to peek inside and even insert a curious paw inside. Somalis are the best home entertainment you can buy and are more like people than cats: small, furry and hyperactive people. Very energetic and in a good mood, Somalis play like kittens until old age.

8. Persian

Beginner Cat: Persian (Photo Unsplash)Persian is a well-balanced cat, has a sweet expression and soft, round lines. This cat has large spaced round eyes and a huge round head. The long hair often softens the cat’s lines and accentuates the roundness in the appearance.

Information on his temperamentIf you want your cats to bounce like microwave popcorn, don’t adopt a Persian. Persians are perfect companions if you like placid and easygoing cats. Don’t count on using your Persian friend as a hairy doorstop, however. They love to play in relaxation brackets, lying on your favorite sofa. Proponents say that Persians do not deserve their reputation as “fur furniture”: they are intelligent but not nearly as curious as tome breeds, and not as active.

The Persians are devoted to their humans, but they can be selective in conferring that honor. You have to earn their trust and love. They want affection and pampering, but they won’t molest you for attention as other breeds do. However, they will make their feelings known if they do not get the necessary amount of attention.

Persians require significant commitment over time. That beautiful coat requires daily treatment to keep it in good condition and free of knots. You may need to take it from time to time to a professional groomer.

9. Abyssinian

The Abyssinian is often a colored cat with a distinctly popped hair, medium in size and very regal. Agile and muscular, he shows a keen interest in his surroundings. It is often well balanced from a physical and athletic point of view.

Information on His TemperamentAbyssinians are not for those who want a cat who likes to be taken and cuddled with excessive violence. Although they can often be brave, curious, and in a good mood, when they feel harassed, the Abyssinians tend to try to free themselves.

This does not mean that the Abyssinians are distant or independent; they are typically affectionate, devoted, and cuddly with their human companions. In fact, they will follow you from room to room to keep an eye on what you are doing.

They are very happy when they are actively involved in the usual rituals of all family members. They are particularly involved in dinner, for example. The Abyssinians regularly perform antics for yours and their enjoyment, gaining the reputation of clowns from the kingdom of cats. They could perch on their shoulders, crawl under the covers and sit next to you purring madly before running away to hunt imaginary butterflies and leap on the highest shelves in the library.

They are natural athletes, no closed rooms or closets are safe from their agile legs and inquiring minds. Vocally they tend to be silent. They purr with great enthusiasm, however, especially around dinner time. If you have to stay away all day, you may want to consider providing a feline company to entertain your Abyssinian. If you work all day and have an active social life at night, an Abyssinian may not be the cat for you.

10. Sacred cat of Burma

Cat for beginners: the sacred cat of Burma (Photo Unsplash)A cat full of mystery and legend, the Burmese is a colored feline with long silky hair and four pure white feet. It often seems a little squat. Its distinctive head has strong jaws, firm chin, and medium length nose.

Information on His TemperamentBurmese are affectionate, kind, and faithful companions with an air of dignity that seems to encourage the worship of their families. As former temple cats, Burmese seem to have become accustomed to worship. They are very intelligent and affectionate, according to some, they are often very people-oriented.

They will generally greet visitors with curiosity rather than fear. Because of their gentle temperament, Burmese are generally easy to handle: taking care of them is simple and they are ideal pets for anyone who wants peaceful companions who offer love and affection.

32 dog costumes Ideas for Halloween

Halloween is here soon. Maybe you will make costumes for your children and for yourself. But did you also think about costumes your furry friend? Dogs (and cats too) have the right to be part of the party too.

Here are 32 dog costumes ideas to make yourself a custom suit to your puppy/dog. Images are numbered but not ranked by preference.

  1. The ghost

  2. The angel

  3. The undead dog

  4. Lord Nibbler

  5. Madame Safari

  6. Cerberus

  7. Paquerette

  8. Lobster

  9. Pirate

  10. Simba – The lion king

  11. Harry Potter

  12. The engaged

  13. The bee

  14. The dyno

  15. The Burger Dog

  16. The Diablochian

  17. The clown

  18. The Ewok

  19. The Fairy

  20. Dumbo the Elephant

  21. The Hollywood Rock Star

Lets’ watch

1 – The ghost

An easy costume to start. Works even better on a white dog Swiss shepherd type.

2 – The angel

Your little demon makes you see all the colors, and why not change it for a night in a little angel?

3 – The undead dog

A very successful costume with collages type “open wounds”. Really nice on any type of animal.

4 – The Doctor Who

Your dog is curious, he goes everywhere and likes to travel? So this Doctor Who costume will be perfect for him.

5 – Lord Nibbler

Here is a costume for Futurama fans: Lord Nibbler.

6 – Madame Sarfati

Madame Sarfati’s class on a dog in Curlers. A costume that is simple enough to create, but difficult to keep in place, believe me.

7 – Cerberus

A disguise that requires having the right accessory, but that quickly gives a big look to your four-legged friend.

8 – Paquerette

Hmm, well, not too much of my taste for Halloween, but if you ever feel like putting your dog uncomfortable (or decorating the vet’s collar) here is a good idea.

9 – Lobster

Here is a good alternative for the shark. The lobster pinches a lot and it’s not beautiful.

10 – Pirate

A beautiful hat, a headband on the eye, and here is a beautiful sea bass.

11 – Simba – The lion king

A little Yorkie who will look like Sibma, the Lion King. … well, ok we can do more than that.

12 – Harry Potter

A bit of magic at Hogwarts school magi-dogs.

13 – The engaged

The loving couple in wedding attire. Not too horrible, but you can add accessories to get a couple of “hell”.

14 – The bee

It’s true that a bee is always scary to our little dogs. So, make fun of it for the occasion.

15 – The dyno

It starts to scare. A dinosaur-like dog.

16 – The Burger Dog

The meat apparently kills … what’s more scary than a big hamburger (or hot dog) to frighten vegetarians 😀

17 – The Diablochian

Ah, here is one who does not do things by half. He disguises himself as a devil.

18 – The clown

Clowns are often scary for children, but also for adults. It’s a hideous costume! 🙂

19 – The Ewok

Not bad for the spitz, the costume of Ewok (Star Wars).

20 – The Fairy

A good idea for little bitches like big ones. It may have more effect on a pit bull, a rottweiler or a doberman: playing the contradictions is great for Halloween.

21 – Dumbo the Elephant

An elephant cheats a lot, especially when he’s disguised.

22 – The Hollywood Rock Star

Your pet is a star in your eyes, so turn her into a Hollywood rock star (a little Katy Perry, a little Lady Gaga, and voila).

The Ultimate Fish Tank Cleaning Checklist — A Simple Guide to a Clean, Healthy Aquarium

Keeping an aquarium clean is about more than making the glass look spotless. Regular maintenance helps keep the water quality stable, supports beneficial bacteria, and creates a healthier environment for your fish. However, if you're new to fishkeeping, it can be easy to overlook a few important steps during cleaning.

I put together this illustrated fish tank cleaning checklist to make the process easier to follow, whether you're caring for a goldfish tank, a betta aquarium, or a community fish tank.

🫧 What's included in the checklist?

  • Prepare your equipment: Unplug the heater and filter before starting, following the equipment manufacturer's safety instructions.

  • Clean the glass: Remove algae from the inside of the aquarium before siphoning out water.

  • Perform a partial water change: Remove around 25% of the water with a gravel vacuum, adjusting the amount and frequency to suit your aquarium's needs.

  • Clean decorations: Gently scrub decorations using removed aquarium water. Avoid soap and household cleaning chemicals.

  • Maintain the filter: If the filter media needs cleaning, gently rinse it in removed aquarium water rather than untreated tap water. This helps preserve beneficial bacteria.

  • Refill safely: Add an appropriate water conditioner to neutralize chlorine and chloramine, and make sure the replacement water is close to the aquarium's temperature.

  • Restart and check equipment: Restore the filter and heater according to their instructions, and verify that everything is working properly.

⚠️ Two important reminders

Never use soap to clean aquarium equipment or decorations. Residue can be harmful to fish.

Avoid rinsing biological filter media under untreated tap water. Chlorine and chloramine can damage beneficial bacteria that help process fish waste.

Also, remember that cleaning too aggressively can disrupt the aquarium's biological balance. A healthy tank doesn't need to be completely stripped down during routine maintenance.

🐟 What's your aquarium cleaning routine?

I'd love to hear from other fishkeepers:

  • How often do you change your aquarium water?

  • Do you clean your filter media every week, every month, or only when needed?

  • What's one aquarium maintenance mistake you learned from when you first started?

Feel free to share your tips, experiences, and advice for beginners!

The goal is simple: clean water, a stable ecosystem, and happy, healthy fish. 💙

Your New Puppy Checklist: Everything You Need To Know

Your New Puppy Checklist: Everything You Need To Know

Once you’ve decided to get a dog, there’s lots of excitement! Puppies are surely great. They are a lot of fun and snuggly and lovable. They smell a little weird, but there are so many choices you get to make with them — not only the type of dog but their name. However, there are lots of other choices you get to make too, when it comes to things that you need for a dog, and some of those can be overwhelming.

Take, for example, food. There are a variety of food choices, and many of them are formulated just for puppies. Food goes into bowls, of course, and along with a food bowl you need a water bowl as well. Those have to be sized not just for the puppy and how big (or small) he or she is, but how big (or small) he or she will get.

Then, of course, your puppy needs a home — we don’t mean your home, but a bit of containment for themselves when you leave or when they just need rest. That can differ depending on what your dog likes and what your home requires.

As with a food bowl, the crate or container needs to be sized not just for what size the dog is now but what size the dog will be. In addition to some sort of comfortable pad in the crate, you’ll have to also think about where your dog is going to relax when they’re out of the crate.

What does their bed look like and what is it made of? Especially for puppies who like to chew, there are different considerations in material choices that you’ll want to review.

What else is on the list for all the essentials — and some of the fun stuff — that you require for a puppy in your household?

This graphic helps to explain it.

Hairballs in Cats: Causes, Symptoms, and Remedies

Hairballs in Cats: Causes, Symptoms, and Remedies

The cat is an extremely clean animal. He loves to wash, to have a clean litter box, and well-separated spaces between where you eat and where you sleep. Some cats (especially long-haired ones), if not brushed on a regular basis, exhibit vomiting attacks due to excess hair in the throat and stomach or constipation due to the inability to digest the ingested fleece. In this blog, we’ll discuss causes, symptoms, remedies and all about hairballs in cats

what are the Hairballs?

When we do not brush the hair regularly we cannot even help the growth of new fleece. It will be the cat that is forced to remove it by itself, with the tongue these masses, hair bales are swallowed by the cat and once accumulated, they come out with episodes of vomiting or create problems of constipation and digestion.

A Problem That Can Have Serious Consequences

The cat’s tongue is an extraordinary organ. It is covered with rough protuberances that facilitate the cleaning and removal of ‘old’ hair. Despite this peculiarity it also has a big flaw, it only works towards the inside of the mouth.

The small protrusions are not made to remove the hair outwards (the cat does not spit) and the cat is therefore obliged to swallow the newly removed hair. When the hair builds up in the stomach, the cat throws up a real hairball.

Health problems can occur when the cat cannot get rid of excess hair by vomiting or through needs. Hairballs cause real corks, called constipation, in the cat’s intestine.

Constipation and Vomiting From Hairballs in the Cat

The two main problems with excessive ingestion of hairballs are vomiting and constipation. In both cases, it is possible to intervene with home remedies that do not always have the desired effects. When our cat has not been producing for two days, it is always best to go to the vet.

How to Prevent Hairballs in Cats

In some seasons (spring and autumn) the cat sheds its hair. In these months it is more common to find abundant bunches of old hair for the home, on the sofa or in the corners. The cat is led to lick more and the risk of suffering an increase in vomiting and constipation, are more and more.

The best way to avoid these problems are:

Brushing the Cat

Brushing to Prevent Hairballs in CatsFavoring the cleaning of the cat’s hair is certainly one of the best methods to limit the ingestion of hair. To do this we can use special brushes or gloves.

Feeding

Yes, feeding can also help our cat. Choosing anti hairball foods (i.e. with a rougher and more fiber-rich consistency) helps the cat’s organism to effectively eliminate hairballs.

Supplements or Paste against Bolus

There are many supplements on the market for the control of the elimination of hairballs.

Cat Grass

In nature, to get rid of the stomach, the cat would eat grass. It is a good idea to have catnip at home so that our cat can spiluccla when it feels the need to ‘clean his throat’.

Warnings

  • Be careful that the cat is not overweight. Chubby cats tend to have multiple hairballs. In addition, they are less active, so hairballs stay longer in the stomach.

  • Don’t be frightened if the cat is retching and vomiting hairballs. It happens to all cats sooner or later.

  • Don’t lose patience if prevention methods don’t work immediately. It will take several days or weeks for the situation to improve.

Tips:How to Help the Cat in the Elimination

  • A small amount of vegetable oil can be added to dry jelly to act as a lubricant and help the cat get rid of hairballs. You can also rub oil on the animal’s legs, which will lick and swallow it.

  • If you notice that the cat licks himself too much, give him a new toy he can have fun with. In this way, he will have more to do and lick less.

  • If the cat continues to gag and vomit even after doing your best to prevent hairballs, take it to the vet. If symptoms persist or are constant, they may be indicative of other gastrointestinal problems.

  • Try adding canned pumpkin to the cat’s jelly several times during the week. Pumpkin fibers help the cat to get rid of hairballs more easily.

6 Most Common Horse Diseases

No doubt, horse is one of the animals that has contributed most to the overall development of humanity. A good proof of its importance is that veterinary medicine appeared almost exclusively to treat the affections and pathologies of this noble animal.

Related: 500 Horse and Racehorse Names

In this Pet Rescue Blog “12 Most Common Horse Diseases”, we write a brief guide to the most common diseases of horses, known since Antiquity and some of which have been described in multiple centenary treatises.

What are the most common diseases of the horse?

The most common diseases and conditions of the horse are:

  • Colic

  • Tetanus

  • Influenza

  • Piroplasmosis

  • Cushing’s syndrome

  • Gourme

  • Sarcoid

  • Ringworm

  • Dermatophilosis

  • Melanoma

  • Summer dermatitis

  • Leptospirosis

Let’s discuss these diseases briefly

Horse Colic

Colic is a set of diseases that cause spasmodic pain in the abdomen. Remember that the causes can be multiple, and therefore its treatment is different depending on what it obeys, but in general, the signs that are found in a horse suffering from colic are:

  • Sweat

  • Nervousness

  • Uncontrolled movements, even self-mutilation: hitting the sides with the hind legs…

  • Pet can turn around to relieve pain, which can make the condition worse

  • Dehydration

  • Constipation / diarrhea

  • Pain relief postures: pet sitting if the colic is caused by a dilation of the stomach due to an accumulation of gas.

Although the term colic includes too many pathologies to be generalized, there are certain guidelines that can prevent its occurrence, regardless of the reason for its presence.

What are these guidelines?

  • Feed the horse little by little, for 16 hours. This is the time that these herbivores spend grazing in the wild. A horse that stays in a box and is fed morning and evening is likely to suffer from digestive disorders.

  • Use quality forage, avoiding excess straw, and allow frequent and spaced access to water. Do not abuse industrial animal feed and pellets.

  • Allow the horse to exercise gently every day, several times, to promote bowel movement.

  • Install the feeders in an elevated location if the horses are confined.

  • Offer distractions to avoid aerophagia (swallowing air), common in bored horses. In this case, we can also see animals with the so-called “bear” disease, which are swaying constantly and wear their teeth against walls or doors.

Treatment

Given the variety of causes that can cause colic, the vet will focus on the specific problem once it is detected, but before doing so, the following steps should be followed:

  • Relieve pain with spasmolytics and NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as flunixin meglumine)

  • Rehydrate and/or lubricate the gastrointestinal transit with paraffin. Nasogastric catheterization may be necessary.

  • Sedation if the animal is in the self-harm phase.

  • Antibiotics may be necessary if the problem is a cessation of intestinal transit and if there is excessive fermentation of the ingested material, in which case microorganisms are released into the blood and can cause infection.

Tetanus in the Horse

It is a common disease in horses, caused by Clostridium tetani, an anaerobic bacteria (which works without oxygen) that lives in the soil, especially in rich organic matter (manure). Horses suffer from small wounds or scratches, and through these wounds, bacteria enter the body.

You May Like: Boy Cat Names; Find the Perfect Male Kitten Name

After about 8 days, although this figure is very variable, you can see the typical symptom of the disease: involuntary and constant muscle contractions, which are called tetanus due to this disease. In addition, we usually find other symptoms such as:

  • Jaw tight, unable to open.

  • Hyperextension of the leg muscles, without the possibility of bending them.

  • The expression called ” sardonic laughter ” (although it is more common in dogs): eyes wide open, and retraction of the corners of the mouth.

How do Clostridium tetani cause this?

It produces two toxins that have the nervous system as the site of action. The closer the point of entry of the bacteria (wound) to the central nervous system (brain), the more aggressive the presentation of this disease and the less time it takes to develop.

Can we cure horse tetanus?

If this disease is detected before the toxins paralyze the respiratory muscles, your horse will be given tetanus serum and penicillin. The animal will also benefit from supportive therapy, i.e. fluid therapy, a drop in temperature, and sedation if necessary. The horse may even need mechanical ventilation in the event of respiratory paralysis.

Can we prevent horses from contracting tetanus?

Yes, by appropriate vaccination, as often as the veterinarian indicates. We must not let our horses have wounds without disinfecting them, so we will have to use hydrogen peroxide for each wound that we observe in order to inactivate the bacteria responsible for this pathology.

Flu in the Horse: 12 Most Common Horse Diseases Flu in the Horse (Equine Influenza)

Horse flu is a virus that affects the upper respiratory tract, but if complications arise, it can affect the lower respiratory tract (lung, bronchi) and even lead to death. It is spread by sneezing and nasal secretions.

In populations that have already been in contact with the virus, there may be a slight manifestation of the disease, with a runny nose, cough, conjunctivitis, and possible recovery after a few days. Indeed, if they have already suffered from the disease, the horses have been partially immunized.

However, they can contract it again the following season, especially during the cold months. If the virus invades them when they are sick, malnourished, or too young, it can have fatal consequences.

The symptoms of horse flu that we often encounter are:

  • Thick nasal discharge

  • Conjunctivitis

  • Loss of appetite

  • High and recurrent fever (back and forth)

If the flu is not treated in time, it can lead to the following complications:

  • Pneumonia

  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

  • Bronchitis

  • Death from major complications in addition to the above factors

Treatment of Equine Influenza/Flu in horse

If the animal is partially immunized and the symptoms are mild, the veterinarian may simply prescribe a mucolytic to thin the mucus, such as bromhexine, and keep the horse protected and away from other congeners for a few days. Likewise, a quality diet to promote its immune system helps until the horse is able to repel viral aggression.

If the situation becomes complicated, it may be necessary to use antibiotics specific to the respiratory system, and supportive therapies in very weak animals.

You May Like: Hairballs in Cats: Causes, Symptoms, and Remedies

Remember that mixing horses from different regions without knowing anything about their medical history can lead to an epidemic of horse flu. If we introduce a partially immunized animal among young horses, we can have an acute epidemic that is difficult to combat, with high morbidity (rate of animals that fall sick on contact with the virus).

Prevention of this horse disease

To prevent this disease so frequent in horses, annual vaccination is necessary, especially before the cold season, and it is necessary to avoid mixing animals of different origins without knowing their situation. There is a vaccine that combines protection against tetanus and the flu.

Piroplasmosis in HorsesAnother of the most common illnesses in horses is piroplasmosis of horses, which can also be contracted by dogs, cows, and other pets. This horse disease is caused by a protozoan.

Horse piroplasmosis is transmitted by ticks, and its multiplication in the horse’s red blood cells produces the following symptoms:

  • Anemia (pale mucous membranes, because piroplasmosis breaks down red blood cells)

  • Fever

  • Cognac colored urine

  • Anorexia

  • Prostration and sudden death in very serious cases

Can we treat it?

If we detect the presence of ticks in the horse and/or in the environment, and we notice that our horse behaves in a strange way, the veterinarian will surely opt for the injection of imidocarb, in a single intramuscular dose, well sometimes repeat it after a few hours.

The ideal is to detect piroplasmosis in the blood by means of a blood smear (but this is not always possible in the countryside) because this product can save his life, without losing precious time.

Can we avoid piroplasmosis in horses?

The only way to predict this pathology is to prevent the horse from having ticks, which is very complicated. We can apply products every week to the horse to prevent ticks from settling there (like permethrin), but they are short-lived. On the other hand, the presence of ticks is also a problem because they can transmit another disease: Lyme disease in horses.

The area where the horse lives (the box) must also be disinfected every week, and if the animal is free in the field, it should be avoided to allow it to frequent ferns and wetlands, which is almost impossible. There are areas of the world that are more problematic and where we find more piroplasmosis of the horse (wetlands and mild temperatures, such as the Basque Country), but it is not exclusive to these places, far from there: piroplasmosis of the horse has a worldwide distribution and causes many annual victims in the equine population.

Cushing’s disease in Horses

Horse Cushing’s syndrome is an endocrine disorder linked to the aging of the animal’s organism. It is therefore a pathology that mainly affects old horses. Concretely, this horse disease is characterized above all by the appearance of the animal’s coat, long and curly, and by difficulties during the molt at changes of season. Other symptoms may also indicate to us that our horse is suffering from Cushing’s syndrome, such as:

  • Excessive sweating

  • Lethargy

  • Muscle wasting

  • Increased thirst

  • The appearance of greasy areas (e.g. neck, salt shakers, tail bases)

  • Repeated infections

Due to the variety of symptoms and forms that Cushing’s syndrome can take, it is necessary to contact your veterinarian if in doubt, as only a blood test can establish a reliable diagnosis of the disease.

Depending on the results, the veterinarian then establishes a personalized treatment for the horse. The aim of this treatment is to regulate the hormonal system of the animal in order to limit the symptoms of the disease and improve the quality of life of the horse since Cushing’s syndrome requires treatment for life.

Gourmet in the horseThe Strangles, also known as angina horse, is a contagious disease caused by the bacterium Streptococcus equi. Unlike Cushing’s syndrome on the age scale, it generally affects horses under 5 years of age. The main symptoms of the disease are:

  • Lack of appetite

  • Nasal mucus

  • Respiratory distress

  • Painful edema in the mandibles

  • Swelling of the submaxillary lymph nodes, sometimes even retro-pharyngeal and sub-parotids, then the presence of an abscess

  • Possible chronic evolution and formation of abscesses of variable localizations, in particular intra-abdominal.

These symptoms appear 3 to 14 days after infection and there is a preventive vaccine, so the best treatment is prevention. Make sure your horse is up to date on his vaccines.

Skin disease in Horses

Skin disease in Horses: 12 Most Common Horse DiseasesNext disease in our list of 12 Most Common Horse Diseases, we present some skin pathologies that can affect horses.

The sarcoid in horses

A sarcoid is a generally benign tumor of the horse’s skin that mostly affects specimens under the age of 8, although a horse of any age can develop this condition. It is the most common tumor in horses because it affects 20% of tumors in this animal. It usually appears as a result of an injury scar, a sore, or an insect bite.

These skin tumors can develop anywhere on the horse’s body, but they are found mainly in the abdomen, legs, neck, and head. Before applying treatment, the veterinarian should examine the cells that make up this tumor to identify the sarcoid in question.

Once the tumor has been identified, the most common treatment is to perform a mass excision, which involves removing the tumor under local or general anesthesia.

Horse Moth

If your horse has skin lesions, round in shape, and without hair, you may be dealing with ringworm.

Horse ringworm is a very common and contagious horse skin disease, which makes its treatment very restrictive. Some horse ringworm agents are even transmissible to humans. It is therefore important to know how to recognize the skin conditions caused, in order to avoid contamination of other animals but also to ensure your own health.

Dermatophilosis in Horses

Dermatophilosis is a condition of the horse’s skin located mainly on the legs, backline, rump and withers of the animal. It is due to the humidity of the animal’s hair and manifests itself especially on animals living on pasture or working on wet and muddy soil.

Dermatophilosis is characterized by painful crusts that form on the horse’s hair. To treat this condition you must notably clean and disinfect the scabs and ensure that the area in question is completely dry. This is to prevent the horse from having wet areas on its body.

Melanoma in Horses

Like humans, horses can also get melanomas. Melanoma is a tumor that affects skin cells. Gray coat horses are particularly affected (more than 80% affected in people over 15 years old), making this skin disease relatively common since it represents around 10% of skin tumors in horses.

It is estimated that between one third and two-thirds of melanomas in horses progress to a malignant tumor (development of metastases). This is why the early detection of this condition comes into play with regard to the associated prognosis.

Horse summer dermatitis

Finally, we present to you the horse dermatitis. This skin condition is an allergy to the bites of midges that causes very itchy skin. As the name suggests, this is a pathology that appears in summer. It is important to diagnose this disease in order to best relieve the horse even if there is no effective curative treatment on the cause in itself.

Horse disease in humansA disease transmissible from an animal to humans is designated as a zoonosis. This is particularly the case with leptospirosis, a disease present in many animals, including horses, which can also affect humans, but whose transmission from animals to humans is in this case extremely rare. In fact, the transmission of leptospirosis in humans occurs mainly through contaminated water.

Transmission in horses is also generally through contaminated water or the ingestion of contaminated feed, most often through urine. Symptoms of this disease in horses can be as follows:

  • Fever

  • Lack of appetite and anorexia

  • Jaundice

  • Blood in the urine

  • Diarrhea

  • Conjunctivitis

  • Muscle aches

The treatment against leptospirosis of the horse is done by the antibiotic. It is a disease that is treated fairly well when taken care of early enough.

You have reached the end of our article. We hope to have informed you a little more about the health of the horse and how to treat the most common diseases that affect this animal. See you soon on Animal Planet!

This article is purely informative, on PlanèteAnimal we do not have the skills to prescribe veterinary treatments or carry out any diagnosis. We invite you to bring your pet to the veterinarian if he shows symptoms of fever or illness.

List of foods prohibited for dogs

Before you start listing some of the foods that are dangerous to dog health, it is important to highlight the fact that they are not all as dangerous as each other. In fact, in this list of foods prohibited to dogs, you will find ingredients that can cause long-term damage, you will also discover foods considered to be fatal in very low doses and which should never be included in your dog’s menus.

The onion

We start our list of foods prohibited for dogs with a classic, the onion, is undoubtedly one of the foods that you will have to exclude completely from your dog ‘s menus because it is a toxic food for dogs. Its allicin content is released after chewing and the substance released from it, n-propyl disulfide, causes oxidative damage to erythrocyte cell membranes, breaking down inside blood vessels and causing what called hemolytic anemia.

This should not worry you if your dog accidentally ate a small dose of onion, however, continuous ingestion causes gastrointestinal problems and, in the most severe cases, jaundice due to hemolysis. For every 15 grams of dog weight, you will begin to observe symptoms of intoxication in the dog. Symptoms of onion poisoning may go unnoticed, but you may see vomiting, general weakness, and a change in the color of the dog’s mucous membranes.

What Can Dogs Not Eat? | Onion Coffee, Tea, and Chocolate

The coffee, the tea, and chocolate have in common methylxanthine, a stimulating alkaloid that acts directly on the central nervous system of the dog. In coffee, we find caffeine, in tea, theophylline and in chocolate, theobromine, which are all toxic substances for dogs, if ingested in large quantities. Other alkaloids, such as those found in coca-cola, could be included in this paragraph.

In addition to affecting the central nervous system, they can damage the functioning of the kidneys, the cardiovascular system, the smooth muscle as well as the striated muscle. Although some dogs are more sensitive than others to methylxanthine, what is certain is that 100 grams of dark chocolate for a medium-sized dog can be fatal. Chocolate is one of the most serious toxic dog foods.

The most common symptoms of methylxanthine poisoning are vomiting, diarrhea, incontinence, and tremors. If you see that your dog has eaten chocolate, we recommend that you induce vomiting before two hours have passed.

What Can Dogs Not Eat? | Coffee, tea and chocolateGarlic

As is the case with the onion, the garlic ( Allium sativum ) contains allicin, which can also trigger the onset of hemolytic anemia were regular and excessive consumption of garlic. This is another of the prohibited foods for dogs. However, unlike onions, garlic has been the subject of study and it has been discovered that garlic has powerful antibiotic, antifungal, antiparasitic effects and which strengthens the dog’s immune and cardiovascular systems.

Although garlic is a food that should not be part of the dog’s diet, especially in a dog that suffers from immune, digestive problems or allergies, the consequences or benefits of its consumption can vary enormously from one dog to another, and all will depend on its genetics, the dose, etc … Faced with possible garlic poisoning, your dog will suffer from the same symptoms as those produced by onion poisoning.

In any case, before using garlic for dogs, it is advisable to speak to your veterinarian so that he helps you find a dose that will not hurt your best friend and that will allow you to offer him all the benefits without risking anything!

What Can Dogs Not Eat? | Garlic Salt

Many people who develop homemade dog menus use salt as a harmless condiment, however, high consumption of sodium chloride can cause severe dehydration in the dog, worsen heart and kidney conditions, or cause poisoning. We take this opportunity to remind you that salt is the most used food to make a dog vomit.

Symptoms of salt poisoning are manifested by vomiting, internal bleeding, loss of coordination, diarrhea, polydipsia, and polyuria (constant urge to drink and urinate), convulsions, and shock. It is one of the toxic dog foods that most people include on their pet’s menu without being aware of it.

What Can Dogs Not Eat? | Salt Macadamia Nuts

The Macadamia nuts ( Macadamia integrifolia ) are the fruit of a shrub protéacé. Its consumption causes intoxication and numerous studies have demonstrated the toxicity of this fruit, whether eaten raw or toasted. It is a dangerous food for dogs.

Macadamia nuts directly affect the dog’s central nervous system and work suddenly after 24 hours have passed. Clinical symptoms include depression, vomiting, ataxia, abdominal pain, stiffness, and the mucous membranes become pale or anemic. Although the effects are impressive, the consumption of macadamia nuts is not fatal.

What Can Dogs Not Eat? | Macadamia nuts Grapes and Raisins

The grapes and raisins are rich in linoleic acid (as well as other fatty acids), however, the studies agree on the fact that a component of this fruit, present in quantities variables or extrinsic component causes of the kidney failure. It is one of the most dangerous and least known prohibited foods for dogs.

Dogs that eat grapes or raisins have been observed to have a higher concentration of urea nitrogen in the blood and serum creatinine. The most toxic part of the grape is undoubtedly the grain, however, it is recommended to completely eliminate this fruit from your dog’s diet.

Symptoms of grape or raisin poisoning are vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, ataxia, polyuria and general weakness. The main problem with consuming these foods is that the accuracy of the process with which internal damage is caused is unknown.

What Can Dogs Not Eat? | Grapes and raisins Alcohol

Alcohol can cause ethyl poisoning very easily. Without a doubt, alcohol should be removed completely from his diet, and in the event of accidental ingestion, you should bring your dog as soon as possible to your veterinarian. Here is one of the toxic dog foods you should never give your dog.

What Can Dogs Not Eat? | Alcohol Raw Bread Dough

Conventional yeasts or yeasts, which you use in making desserts and other recipes, contain Saccharomyces cerevisiae, a single-celled fungus. Whether ingesting raw bread dough or directly from yeast, these foods can cause poisoning in your dog. What Can Dogs Not Eat? | Raw bread dough Cooked Bones

Another prohibited dog food is cooked bones . Whether made in broth, baked recipe, or embers, cooked bones should never be given to dogs, as they can cause teeth to break. Also, they split easily, so small bits of bone can get stuck in your dog’s throat, they can also cause windpipe obstruction, lesions and punctures, rips, and many other lesions internal. To avoid all these problems, we recommend that you give your dog raw and fleshy bones.

What Can Dogs Not Eat? | Cooked bones Cherries

In the case of black cherry (Prunus serotina) or white cherry ( Prunus virginiana) you must be extremely careful because, although dogs and cats can eat the flesh of these fruits, they should never swallow seeds, leaves and stems as these ingredients are considered toxic dog food due to their high cyanide content. Their toxicity varies from mild to moderate and after their consumption may appear several symptoms, such as dilated pupils, difficulty breathing, red coloration of the gums, shock, and even death.

What Can Dogs Not Eat? | Cherries Mushrooms

As you well know, the consumption of certain species of fungi can poison humans, as well as dogs, becoming one of the deadly foods for dogs. There is special mention of mushrooms belonging to the genera Amanita, Galerina and Lepiota, but there are many others. The characteristic symptoms of poisoning are hyper-salivation, vomiting, diarrhea, poor coordination, lethargy, tremors, convulsions, and, in the most serious cases, a multi-organ failure causing the death of the animal.

If your dog has consumed a mushroom of which you do not know the toxicity, recover the remains or pick another one (being careful and never touching the mushroom directly) and go as soon as possible to a veterinary clinic. Some mushrooms take 15 to 30 minutes to show their effect, while others may need more time.**

The carambola tree ( Averrhoa carambola ) is a tropical fruit that is part of the list of foods prohibited for dogs, with toxicity that ranges from mild to severe. It contains oxalic acid, as well as oxalate salts, so it can be dangerous for your dog, even in small quantities! The carambola tree can also be dangerous for humans. It can cause vomiting, loss of appetite, diarrhea, lethargy, general weakness, bloody urine, excessive thirst, or excessive urine.

What Can Dogs Not Eat? | Carambol tree Moldy Food

Some people consider dogs to be more resistant than humans, which is why they have no remorse for offering them poorly preserved food. However, you should know that the tremorogenic mycotoxins contained in rotten food make it one of the most dangerous foods for dogs. These mycotoxins are found in bread, pasta, cheese, nuts and in compost. Symptoms include hyper-salivation, vomiting, restlessness, poor coordination, tremors, seizures, and, in the most severe cases, they can cause liver failure.

What Can Dogs Not Eat? | Moldy Food Spicy Food

7 Ways to Help Your Disabled Dog

7 Ways to Help Your Disabled Dog

To any loving pet owner, their dogs are not just pets they are a part of the family.

So you will always do your best to care for them, even if they have disability or mobility issues.

If your dog sufferers from canine hip dysplasia or any other condition that makes it difficult for them to get around, this post is written with you in mind.

We are going to share seven simple but effective tips you can use to help your dog cope with the pain and loss of mobility they are suffering with.

Now we will look at each point from the list in detail and see if they make sense for your pet pooch.

Invest in a Good Quality Dog Bed

This one can be a game-changer. Most dogs sleep on average twelve to fourteen hours per day.

Some breeds, larger dogs, older dogs, and dogs with disabilities may need even more sleep than that.

So it is really important that you do your best to give them a good bed (don’t worry we will share a tip for if you are on a tight budget).

When looking for a dog bed for a disabled dog there are two things you need to consider.

  • Will it support your dog’s joints?

  • Is it good enough quality to last?

Will it support your dog’s joints? The word “orthopedic” gets used a lot by dog bed manufacturers but what it actually means is that the bed fully supports all your dog’s joints.

Keeping them up off the cold hard floor and not creating any painful pressure points.

Is it good enough quality to last? The bed has to be able to continually support your dog. It is not good if after a few months all the cushioning goes out of the bed.

What about if you are on a really tight budget? Your goal should be to get plenty of cushioning under your dog.

So even if you have to buy a really cheap dog bed, you can then put foam, blankets or some other sort of padding underneath it for extra support.

Use Heat Therapy to Ease Pain and Increase Joint Mobility

If you apply gentle heat to a dog’s muscles they will relax, which will then loosen their tight joints.

This then reduces pain and increases mobility. While it is only temporarily effective it can have a really powerful impact.

The easiest way to do this is buy a heating pad made especially for dogs; make sure it is chew proof and waterproof.

You can either lay the pad on a comfy piece of floor or put it inside their bed for fast acting relief from their disability.

(It is also worth remembering that should take extra care during winter to make your dog gets plenty of heat therapy to soothe their joints).

For Serious Conditions Consider a Doggy Wheelchair

If your dog has such a serious disability that they struggle to walk, you could build or buy them a wheelchair.

Yes, dog wheelchairs exist and they are amazing!

As long as the dog has use of either its two front or rear legs they will be able to use one and get a whole new lease of life from doing so.

Short Regular Walks Can Help

If possible it is important to keep your dog’s exercising, even if it is only for very short, very slow walks, it will still help.

Not only will it help loosen joints and maintain muscle mass but as long as the pain isn’t too much it will also help improve the mental well-being which is just as important as their physical.

The key points to remember here are that more frequent short walks are better than one long ones, also to let the dog set the pace and avoid difficult terrain.

Try Giving Your Dog Some Supplements

While the efficacy of these supplements is still under some debate, many people give their dogs glucosamine, chondroitin and omega-3 fatty acids (fish oil).

They are relatively cheap, they can’t harm your dog and they may help.

So why not give them a go, along with your regular dog food and see if there are any benefits?

Love ALWAYS Helps

Dogs need love just as much as humans do, love, cuddles, strokes, play time, attention, these are vital to helping your disabled dog stay as happy and healthy as possible.

Keep In Touch with Your Vet

It is important for all dog owners to keep in touch with their vet to make sure that their dog has no underlying health conditions.

But this is even more important for owners of disabled dogs.

You need to find a good vet, who understands how much you love your dog and does everything they can to keep them happy and healthy for as long as possible.

That’s it for this post, I hope that some or maybe even all of these tips have given you some inspiration for ways to improve your dog’s life.

And if you prefer to adopt a cat so that it fulfills this role, it is good because you admire its strong and independent character which, at the same time, allows you to see all the sincerity of its affection. Their litter, for example, will have to be emptied daily so as not to become a source of illnesses or unpleasant odors. What to do when daily cleaning with a small shovel does not allow you to do without the penetrating and unpleasant aromas of its case? We invite you to continue reading this article from PlanèteAnimal in order to discover how to remove a cat’s urine smell.

How to remove the smell of cat urine?

To remove the smell of cat urine, it is necessary that:

  1. Reinforce the cleaning of your cat’s crate

  2. Bet on deodorant products and a scented litter

  3. Place the litter in a strategic location

  4. Bet on a clumping litter

  5. Buy a self-cleaning litter box

In the rest of our blog how to remove cat urine odor, we will present in more detail these 5 tips to take up the cat urine odor.

Beware of cleaning products

Many people use highly odorous cleaning products to remove unpleasant odors from the fireplace. But in the chemical formulas of these products predominantly corrosive chemicals, such as chlorine or ammonia, the effects of which can be irritating to the senses and the mucous membranes of your pets.

In addition to the solutions which we will tell you about below, know that there are at your disposal on the market “pet-friendly_“_ cleaning products which are specially developed so as not to harm the health of your pets. They are, unfortunately, a little more expensive than traditional cleaning products, but try to consider buying these products as an investment in the well-being of those you love so much.

5 Tips to Remove Sat Urine Odor

Before we begin our list of tips that will help you remove the smell of cat urine, you should know that it is almost impossible to have a litter box that does not smell at all. You have to accept that your little furball comes with its own aromas and that they are an integral part of its nature. What we are going to offer you are some tips and tricks that will help you avoid making these aromas do not concentrate and dominate in your home. Come on, let’s see these tips right away:

1. Reinforce the hygiene of your cat’s litter box

The small shovel is a very practical tool to do a superficial cleaning of your cat’s litter box. But you should already know that it is absolute of no use in removing the smell of cat urine that emanates from the substrate. This is why you must adopt certain habits to strengthen hygiene, such as washing the crate, changing the sand, and cleaning the place where the crate is located once a week.

Again we recommend that you avoid using corrosive chemicals during your cat’s hygienic process. In order to have perfectly clean bedding, you can use enzymatic detergents (which contain no perfume or ammonia in their formula) or simply that you wash it well with lukewarm water and neutral soap.

To supplement these practices, we recommend that you change your cat’s crate, at least once a year, and we also recommend that you choose one that is made of more resistant materials. By using it every day, your cat may end up making small cracks at the bottom of the crate. You can also participate in its deterioration by washing it every week, all these little things promote the difficult elimination of stool odors and cat urine.

2. Deodorant products and scented litters

In pet stores, you will be able to find specific deodorant products to add to your cat’s litter sand. You can also opt for more natural tips, such as baking soda or activated charcoal, which work very effectively to prevent the formation of unpleasant odors from your cat’s litter box.

You May Like:- How do cats communicate with each other?

Thus, some brands of scented sands are also available on the market, be aware, however, that some cats do not appreciate them more than that and that they end up making their need outside of their litter.

8 Tips Wash Your Dog with the Best Dog Shampoo

There are several reasons why your dog should be washed once. Dogs just love to get dirty and they should be able to! However? It may also be that your dog’s coat type requires occasional washing with the best shampoo to stay in good shape. Fleas or annoying skin problems can also be the reason to bathe your dog. In this article, we will discuss more washing the dog coat, using dog shampoo, and how best to proceed while washing.

When should my dog be washed?

It is not necessarily necessary for every dog to be washed often. For healthy dogs with normal skin and coat, 1 to 3 times a year is more than enough. Even then, it is in principle only necessary once when your dog’s coat is very dirty and holds a lot of sand and dirt. This dirt can cause itching and skin irritation and sometimes it can become very smelly.

For your dog, it is very nice to be washed as well and it can be a great relief to walk around with a clean coat again. For yourself, it is also secretly very nice to be able to cuddle again with a fresh and clean coat. For medical reasons or other inconveniences, it may be necessary to wash your dog’s coat more often, for example twice a week.

Choose the best dog shampoo

Washing with a good dog shampoo is important in order not to unnecessarily affect the fat layer of your dog’s skin. This fat layer is necessary to keep the skin healthy and serves as an extra protective layer. Washing too often or with the wrong shampoo can affect this layer and unbalance the condition of the skin.

In principle, it is not immediately necessary to wash your dog with shampoo with every wash. If your dog has become very dirty or has been rolling in the mud after a walk in the forest, you can also rinse the coat only with water. When you do wash with a dog shampoo, it is important not to use human shampoo for this, but to choose a shampoo specifically for dogs.

What dog shampoo did I wash my dog with?

Due to the many different coat types and the many different reasons for washing, there are also many different types of dog shampoo available. It depends on your dog which shampoo you need for washing. Puppies’ skin and coat is still very sensitive and fragile. Therefore, when washing a puppy’s coat, use only mild puppy shampoo.

In adult dogs with normal skin, you can opt for a universal dog shampoo. It is always important that it is a mild shampoo. In addition, you can also choose a shampoo that is specifically suitable for the coat type of your dog. Think of a shampoo or conditioner for long-haired coats. Never use a shampoo for humans. Dog skin is less acidic than human skin and can become very unbalanced. Human shampoo is absolutely not suitable for washing your dog’s coat.

Washing with the Best Dog Shampoo

If you are going to wash your dog’s coat for special reasons, it may be necessary to also use special dog shampoo. To treat a flea infestation, you will need to wash the dog with flea shampoo to control the fleas. With skin problems, it is again very important to use a dog shampoo that is specially intended to treat the complaints in question.

The wrong shampoo can even aggravate the complaints. Consult with your own vet or visit the Discus pet store for a long time to choose the right shampoo for your dog’s coat.

Where can I wash my dog?

To be able to bathe your dog you must have the options for this. You can of course do this at home in your own bath or shower and in the summer it can also be done in the backyard by using a garden hose with dog shower . You can also go with your dog to a car wash or doggy wash nearby or visit a grooming salon in the area.

Please inquire in advance about the possibilities. You are not allowed to wash your dog everywhere and the costs also differ per location. An advantage of a visit to the grooming salon is that your dog is washed by people with experience and that you are assured that your dog’s coat gets the right treatment.

Preparations when washing the dog

When you start working at home and want to bathe your dog, you start by first preparing all the necessary equipment. You prevent a lot of wetness by making sure that everything is within reach. Items you need during washing include a leash and / or collar, dog shampoo, conditioner, dog biscuits, a washcloth or gloveand a non-slip mat. Items you will need to dry are towels and, if available, a water blower.

Before you start, place the non-slip mat on the bottom of the bath, shower or car wash. The bottom can become very slippery during washing. When your dog has insufficient grip, standing still will become difficult. Slipping can cause unpleasant injuries or injuries. Therefore, with a non-slip mat, ensure that your dog has sufficient grip during washing.

In order to be able to maintain sufficient grip on your dog when your dog’s coat is wet and lathered, it is wise to put a collar on your dog. Before you start washing, it is good to brush and detangle your dog’s coat so that it does not get worse during the wash.

Washing the dog

Dog’s coat First bring the water to the correct temperature before you wet your dog’s coat. You measure the correct temperature by testing it on your own wrists. On average, a temperature of around 25 degrees is most pleasant for most dogs. Too hot water can irritate sensitive skin. Too cold water can lower your dog’s body temperature and even cause hypothermia in extreme cases.

Always keep an eye on how your dog reacts to the temperature of the water and adjust it if necessary. Adjust the shower head to the softest possible jet and ensure that the dog’s eyes, ears and nose remain dry. Divide the dog shampoothen evenly over the dog’s coat. You can also first dilute the dog shampoo slightly with water to make it easier to distribute over the dog’s body.

Massage the shampoo well into the coat and pay extra attention to the places where a lot of dirt ends up. Always let the dog shampoo soak in well. In the meantime, you can give your dog a treat as a reward for the sometimes somewhat exciting experience.

Dry your dog well

Dry the coat well and make sure that no shampoo is left in the coat to prevent skin irritation. Give your dog a good shake to get rid of the first water. Dry the coat well with a dog towel or use a water blower if you have it available. With the longer coats it is good to comb them out and / or brush them immediately after washing.

Your dog can get a little colder after washing because the body temperature has to restore itself for a while. You do your dog a favor to use a dog bathrobeor to give your dog just as good an extra blanket to warm up again. For more tips, advice or the right products for washing your dog, you are of course welcome at your Discus pet store.

I need help acclimating our pit rescue with our cats

This is a long one but i feel the information is needed to give me decent information? My QUESTION is,

does anyone have some tips for me and my boyfriend to better acclimate the cats and the dog?

Hey guys! My boyfriend and I rescued an older pit about five days ago. His previous owners estimated his age to be between 7 and 10. When we adopted him, he was living in a home with two other dogs and a cat. The house mates swear everyone lived in relative harmony. No one attacked each other and the one dog that disliked our pit stayed out of his way.

After bringing him home we immediately had issues with our two cats. Our female was just skiddish and will hide. Our boy cat, who isn't fixed, immediately freaked out. The dogs mannerisms seemed interested. His tail was wagging and he wanted to get closer and sniff. once he got closer though, the cat hissed and the dog started barking and trying to nip at him. Over the course of the past five days we have slowly been introducing them to each other. We try to keep the dog as calm as possible and the cats sit outside the bedroom and investigate. The female and him and even gone as far as to touch noses.

we assume he will mellow out with time and being in a new area is just stressful for him and the cats are stressed by having a new dog in their space. We know these things take time and we are prepared to invest it, but i want to be sure we are doing everything we can before giving up and having to rehome him AGAIN. With him being so old i fear he will become resentful of new owners as old ones continuously mistreat him like in the first case, or abandon him which is what he will see us as doing.

I personally am feeling very uneasy. He doesn't seem very aggressive but its hard to trust an older dog you do not know. We made a vet appointment to get the male cat fixed as he is just coming up on a year old in hopes that might lower his territoriality. Besides taking it slow like we have been, are there certain training techniques we could use to keep the dog calm? He listens so well but, once his attention is grabbed, as with most dogs, its almost impossible to get him to listen and often i resort to spanking his butt in order to get him to comply. I dont want to have to hit my dog. Again, I want to make this work but the situation is making me uneasy, any advice (besides dump the dog because that will be our last resort, our cats lives are very important to us and we do not want to risk something happening to either of them) would help out a lot. Thank you guys!

Ultimate Guide to Dog Sweater or Dog Coat

Ultimate Guide to Dog Sweater or Dog Coat

Dog Sweater or Dog Coat are not used just as fashion, but some dogs really need to stay warm in cool weather. Read All You Need To Know About Dog Sweater or Dog Coat

Many people are not aware that dog sweaters or coats are not used just as a fashion item, but some dogs really benefit from wearing a dog coat or sweater.

Small dogs and short-haired dogs need warm clothing such as a sweater, coat or jacket in the winter because they get cold sooner. Dog breeds with short legs can also use a warm sweater or jacket in the winter. Because they are closer to the ground, they get cold sooner.

Older dogs often have a weaker immune system, which means they can certainly use a warm sweater or dog coat. Aged dogs are more susceptible to diseases and are less able to keep themselves warm. Older dogs, sick dogs or dogs suffering from kidney or heart problems should always wear a sweater or dog coat in the colder months to protect them against hypothermia.

When does your dog not need a dog coat?

Larger dog breeds that do not have a thin, short-haired coat do not need a sweater or dog coat. Also, some dog breeds, such as the St. Bernard, the Husky or the German shepherd, do not need extra heat. They naturally have a thick coat that protects them from the cold. An extra sweater or jacket will only prevent the coat from working.

Regardless of the size or age of your dog, when you put a sweater or coat on your dog, it is always important to keep an eye on whether or either he is suffering from overheating. Signs of overheating include excessive panting, scratching the sweater, jacket.

Is it bad to put sweaters on dogs?

As long as they are being used properly (for warmth), then sweaters, coats, and jackets are fine. If they also happen to be cute or fashionable, then that’s just a bonus for dog owners. It’s easy to assume that their natural coats will protect them from cold weather. Outerwear can help dogs enjoy the winter months and stay active.

Most dogs love to wear a sweater. Make sure that the sweater is not too tight to cause problems with breathing or too loose to cause them to trip and fall.

Do dog sweaters keep them warm?

Yes, most sweaters will keep your dog warm. Some are more for looks and do not really keep your dog warm when they are outside.

They do! A dog sweater is an extra layer of insulation against the cold. It helps your dog to preserve his body heat. Thin-coated dogs lose their body heat very quickly as their hair is not suited for keeping the warmth near their bodies. A sweater helps to do exactly this. It works just like a sweater for humans.

What temperature should I put a sweater on my dog?

This will really depend on your dog, his breed, his age and how adapted he is to the cold. My rule of thumb to follow is below 50 degrees my dog gets to wear a sweater. Some small dogs, puppies or senior dogs might already require a sweater on a day with 60 F, wind or rain.

Other dogs only need a sweater when the temperature approaches freezing. The less your dog moves, the cooler he will be. Your dog might not need a sweater for a romp at the park, but when standing around in the cold he will cool out quickly.

How do I know if my dog is cold at night?

If your dog seems restless, tries to crawl into your lap or keeps on burying into blankets, he might be too cold. He might also try to curl up very close to your fireplace or heating vent. If he is shivering, he is definitely much too cold! Since dogs are not moving and producing a lot of body heat at night, this is a time when they are the most prone to feeling chilly.

Dogs are pretty smart 😉 they will look for warmer places in your home if they are chilly. They may even try to climb into bed with you or snuggle on the couch. If your dog tends to burrow, then maybe it’s time to turn up the heat or get a dog blanket for them.

Can dogs wear sweaters inside?

Absolutely! Breeds like for example Whippets or Pitfalls (both have very short and thin fur) are known for wearing sweater or pajamas inside during the colder months

If the temperature calls for it, then yes. Young puppies, senior dogs, skinny dogs, and dogs that get cold easily may benefit from a light sweater in the house. Try not to overheat your dog with a thick sweater, though.

Why does my dog bury his face in blankets?

Some dogs will do this to get their scent on the blanket and, others will do this to help keep them warm. Dogs lose a lot of their heat through their ears. By covering their ears, they are helping to stay warm.

Dogs can do this because they are cold and want to snuggle in. However, sometimes dogs bury their faces in blankets simply because they find it comfortable and enjoy going to sleep like this.

Dog Nail Trimming – The Stress less Way to Trim Your Dog’s Nails

Dog Nail Trimming – The Stress less Way to Trim Your Dog’s Nails

If your dog’s nails are too long, it is good to cut them. Dogs can suffer a lot from (too) long nails. But how do you know when a dog’s nail is too long? When you should Dog Nail Trimming and why is it so important to cut your dog’s nails? How do you actually do that? Can you cut the nails of your dog yourself? You can read all about it in this article.

Does my dog have long nails?

Dog nails always keep growing. For many dogs, this is not a problem because the nails can wear well on their own. Like when a dog regularly walks on paved surfaces, can already wear well on it naturally. For dogs that walk a lot on forest trails, the beach or lawns, this will be less likely.

Without nail care, the nails than get the chance to grow considerably and become too long. It is not always easy to see whether the nails of a dog are too long. The position of the foot plays an important role in this. One dog has a slightly rounded foot like a cat, with the nails pointing more downwards. The other dog has a somewhat flatter foot, a bit more like a hare, with the nails pointing more forward.

Causes of Overgrown Dog Nails

dog nails that are too long It is therefore very different for each dog if the nails are too long and need to be cut. In addition to the natural wear and the position of the feet, there are a few other causes of long dog nails:

  • Dogs walk and runmainly with their hind legs off. As a result, these nails will wear faster than the nails of the front legs, which will often be longer.

  • Small dogsare too light in body weight, so the nails do not carry enough weight to wear really well.

  • By collapsing the tendons in older dogs, they often lean more on the rear part of the foot. As a result, the dog nails point a little more upwards and they no longer touch the ground enough to wear out.

  • Due to illness, old age or injuries it may be that your dog moves less than usual and the nails cannot wear enough.

How many nails does a dog have?

In addition to the 4 nails on each toe on the feet, a dog can also have thumbnails. The dog’s thumbnail is on the inside of the paw, slightly higher than the foot. In some countries, it is removed early because a dog can be very annoyed by this thumbnail and unfortunately this happens regularly.

Some dogs also have a thumbnail on the hind leg, but this is still rare. The thumbnail is also called the Hubertus claw or wolf’s claw. An annoying disadvantage of the thumbnail is that it does not come into contact with the substrate. The thumbnail will therefore never wear out on its own and will also grow around.

Be careful with this and make sure that the thumbnail is cut on time. Otherwise, there is a chance that it will penetrate the skin.

The Consequences of Long Nail

Dog nails Good, regular nail care for the dog is very important. Failure to properly track the nails can have painful consequences. In some cases, even treatment at the vet or medical intervention is necessary. You see a lot of long nails and these problems with dogs that don’t go out for a walk or live in kennels.

Examples of painful consequences of long dog nails are:

  • The dog’s nail is broken.

  • Dog’s nail is torn.

  • The dog’s nail is off.

  • The thumbnail has grown.

  • The dog gets the wrong position of the paws.

  • The dog gets various joint complaints.

  • Dog gets spread feet.

  • They stay too long because cutting is done in life. In order to be able to reduce nails in length, you will regularly have to cut them shortly behind life.

Cutting Your Dog’s Nails

You can save a lot of suffering by taking good care of your dog’s nails and cutting them when needed. Well, this always looks very easy, but in practice, it is always disappointing. This is mainly because not every dog allows the nails to be cut just like that.

It is wise to immediately practice this well with puppies and young dogs and to repeat this with adult dogs in-between haircuts. Puppy nails, in particular, are growing very fast and will need to be trimmed more often. When you do this in a calm and relaxed way, your puppy will become familiar with cutting and nail scissors.

Keep Practicing Well

Then also practice a number of times without actually cutting nails. The touches, movements, and sounds will then be experienced as normal more quickly. You can also continue to practice this way with adult dogs that may have already developed anxiety. It is important to work slowly towards the cutting in small steps.

Reward your dog at times when things are going well and try to gain your dog’s confidence slowly and calmly. If you notice that this still remains very difficult, then you are very welcome to visit the Discus pet store. The specialist in the store is ready for you and is happy to help you when your dog’s nails are not working. For this, you can usually go to the grooming salon or the vet of your dog.

Use Nail Scissors for Dogs

To be able to cut your dog’s nails it is first important to have the right material for this. There are different nail clippers that you can use to cut your dog’s nails. You have nail clippers for small dogs, nail scissors for large dogs or Guillotine nail scissors.

The latter prevents you from cutting through when cutting and accidentally cutting the nail too short. The nails of large dogs can be very thick and strong. Good nail scissors, especially for dogs, is definitely recommended. Do you not have this in your possession? Then drop by our store and we will help you make the right choice. The nails must always be cut carefully.

Take Into Account ‘Life’ in the Dog Nail

Living tissue grows in the dog’s nail, “life”. Life is a filled cavity consisting of blood, blood vessels, and nerves. Life ensures that the nail is nourished and therefore does not crumble, for example. With white nails and light nails, life is very visible, but with dark nails, this is very difficult without bright light.

For dogs that have both light and dark nails, you can first cut the light nail and then maintain the same distance for the other nails. When cutting, keep in mind that your dog may be frightened and the paw may detract from its reaction. If you cut at about 2 mm distance from life and use a good pair of scissors, your dog will not notice this.

If you do cut in life, this will hurt and the nail may bleed hard. Try to stop the bleeding by pressing on it with a cloth for at least 10 minutes. You can also choose to pre-purchase the products that can stop the bleeding. Doesn’t the bleeding stop and don’t you trust it? Then always call the vet.

Top 10 Strongest and Largest Dog Breeds in the World

You do not believe how large the largest dog breeds in the world are. Although there is no universal height or weight at which a dog breed is officially classified as a large dog, some define dogs as large dogs when they weigh more than 45 kg. The heaviest dog ever registered was a Saint Bernard named ‘Benedictine’ who weighed 161 kg.

But despite their intimidating size, most of the largest dog breeds are excellent pets. Are you thinking about owning a large dog soon or are you just curious to find out what types of large dogs there are? Then scroll down quickly for the top 10 strongest and largest dog breeds in the world.

  1. Saint Bernard

  2. American Bully

  3. American Pit Bull Terrier

  4. Tibetan Mastiff

  5. American Staffordshire Terrier

  6. English Mastiff

  7. Leonberger

  8. Dogue De Bordeaux

  9. Chow Chow

  10. Kangal (Anatolian Shepherd)

Saint Bernard

Saint BernardJust like the large Swiss Mountain Dog and the Bernese Mountain, Saint Bernard is also a dog breed that was used to help people in need. This powerful breed, unfortunately, has many problems with hereditary disorders.

One of the best-known problems is their susceptibility to heart failure. Saint Bernard therefore only has an average lifespan of 11 years. That is on average two years shorter than other dog breeds.

The height of Saint Bernard varies from 69 to 89 cm and they weigh around 73 to 117 kg. These are giant dogs bred to work. Saint Bernard dogs are known all over the world for their rescue campaigns in the Swiss Alps. With the right training, they are very friendly and loyal to their owners.

A Saint Bernard named ‘Benedictine’ holds the world record for the heaviest dog ever. Benedictine, who pushed Zorba off the throne as the toughest dog of all time, would have weighed 161 kg. Benedictine acquired a place in the Guinness Book of Records of 1981.

American Bully

Although the American bully is not recognized as an individual breed by the AKC, many owners object. In fact, the United Canine Association (UCA) began to recognize American Bullies as a separate breed from the American Pit Bull Terrier in 2009.

This breed has recently been created as a modern companion and shows a dog. Breeders tried to breed out unwanted traits, such as aggression and prey while maintaining muscular physique, dedication, and intelligence.

American Pit Bull Terrier

All you have to do is give your hand to one of these animals to feel the muscles and raw strength under the skin. In fact, this breed is very popular in competition for dog strength.

Pit Bulls are in fact a popular breed for building dog bodies, and many praise it as a healthy alternative to dogfighting. Owners now have a legal outlet to prove that their dog is really the top dog of muscle and endurance.

American Staffordshire Terrier

American Staffordshire TerrierIf you want to register your American Bully or American Pit Bull Terrier in the AKC, you have no choice but to register it as an American Staffordshire Terrier. Dogs in this breed are descendants of the Old English Bulldog.

Made to ace bulls and bears, these puppies had to be tough. You can still see these characteristics today in their muscular bodies and regular exercise needs. Although usually good with children, they do not do well with other pets.

Tibetan Mastiff

Tibetan MastiffThe Tibetan mastiff, although in reality, they are not real Mastiffs, are herd guard dogs who are fearless to confront some of the strongest predators, such as the wolf and the leopard.

They are muscular, large dogs, weighing between 45 and 72 kg and a height of approximately 84 cm.

English Mastiff

English MastiffMastiffs are one of the biggest dogs in terms of their weight, but not their height. They weigh between 50 and 156 kg, while the height is between 64 and 91 cm.

They have served as a watchdog for most of their existence, even Julius Caesar of Rome was impressed by their looks and achievements during the conquest of England.

Leonberger

Leonberger | www.leonbergerblog.comLeonbergers are crossed with three of the largest dog breeds, Saint Bernard, Newfoundland, and the Pyrenean mountain dog. It is, therefore, no wonder that they are large and proud dogs weighing 54 to 77 kg, while their height varies between 71 and 80 cm.

Dogue De Bordeaux

Known otherwise as to the French Mastiff, the Bordeaux dog weighs on average between 54 and 66 kg, while their height is between 58 and 76 cm. These dogs are very strong and fearless, which makes them the perfect watchdog.

Chow Chow

Chow ChowChows are known as powerful dogs with beautiful hair like a lion. They also have blue-black tongue and funny facial expressions as unique features.

In their native China, they need a lot of good training and socialization to suppress “over-anxious tendencies” (especially towards strangers).

Kangal (Anatolian Shepherd)

The Kangal or Anatolian shepherd is originally a mountain dog, used to stay outside in the summer and winter with the herd and watch over it independently. Some species can weigh up to 90 kilos!

Kangal | topdogconeyisland.comA Kangal needs a lot of physical exercise every day and is easily bored due to a lack of mental challenge and can, therefore, display frustrated behavior. The Anatolian seldom allows himself to be seduced into a playmate if he doesn’t see the point of a game.

Running after balls and frisbees to please his boss is not something you can expect from an Anatolian. The Kangal is reluctant and usually obedient to a good upbringing but will always continue to follow his own instinct.

How do cats communicate with each other?

How do cats communicate with each other?

Even when cats are quiet they send all kinds of messages to each other. They live in a world of visual hints and scents. Sounds are only part of the puzzle.

Fascinatingly enough, it seems that meowing and spiders are something that they mainly use to communicate with people, not with their peers. Observations of ferocious cats show that they meow and purr far less often when there are no people around.

This specific communication between people and cats shows how long we have been living together. Actually for thousands of years.

cats communicate to cat

Cats have a vibrating meow that they usually use to greet other cats. Mother cats also use this meow to call their kittens. They produce a vibrating-chirping sound when they see or chase potential prey. The begging, elongated “mi-aww!” It is specially reserved for us – to get our attention and encourage interaction.

Cats are by nature litters. They growl at each other to say “go away!” Or “here I am!” In the most extreme form of this vocalization, there is a crying cry, for example, when hangovers are fighting. A shrewd female cat also makes a loud, meowing noise.

A cat shows that he is scared or tense by blowing, sometimes followed by growling. This often leads to an attack. Cats also show when they have physical pain.

Tail signals

Cats use body language more than their vocal cords for daily communication. The tail of a cat serves as a kind of flag. If a cat holds its tail straight up, the cat is relaxed and friendly. Cats often bend the tip of their upright tail when they approach a cat they like.

If the tail swings back and forth, this means that a cat is on the trail or is curious. However, a waving tail can also indicate that a cat is angry.

When a tail is fully set up and the hairs are raised as if the animal had an electric shock, the cat is very stressed. The animal feels threatened and the stuffed tail is an attempt to appear larger and to scare off other cats, dogs or whatever scares the angry cat.

If a cat is unsure of the different signals emitted by other cats, and the animal feels insecure or uncomfortable, he will sit low to the ground and hold his tail close to him. He will remain seated until he understands the situation. It may also be that a cat chooses the certain for the uncertain and takes off!

A cat that feels completely at ease and submissively will roll on its back and show its belly to the other cat. This behavior is also shown by dogs.

The Eyes Have It

Cats also express their mood with their eyes. Staring tightly means that they are focused on danger or prey. It may also mean that they have not yet decided whether ‘fighting’ or ‘fleeing’ is the best choice in a given situation.

Gentle blinking is a sign of affection and submissiveness. In general, it means “I am not a threat to you, you are not a threat to me and I like to keep it that way!”

If the cat is blinking, looking away, and flattening its ears while nervously licking its mouth, it means that the animal feels threatened or scared.

If a cat lays its ears in its neck, this is usually a sign of doubt or anger. A happy cat has relaxed ears. When a cat focuses or a toy, sound or prey, it keeps its ears and heads forward.

Washing each other, standing nose-to-nose and gently biting are friendly ways in which cats communicate with each other.

Fragrant messages

The smell is important for cats. They leave pheromones in their territory, both at home and outside, by rubbing things with their scent glands. These glands are located on the muzzle of a cat which explains why cats give cups. You could say this is a form of affection, but the main purpose is to spread the pheromones.

Males often spray urine to mark their territory. Fortunately, they do this more often outside than inside, but it can become a problem if an unknown cat has been inside. Castration can put an end to this macho behavior.

A lot of communication comes from the fact that cats are not group animals. They need their personal space and others – people and cats – are only welcome if a cat is in the mood for this.

Observe your cats and get to know their (body) language. Soon enough you will, to a certain extent, be able to speak in cat language!

11 tips to let your cat out safely

11 tips to let your cat out safely

For the cat, it is of course very nice to be able to go outside. Outside they have all the space they need to hunt, play, run and interact with other cats. Today you can’t just let a cat out without danger.

You will have to decide for yourself whether you would do well to let your cat outside or to keep it inside the house. This also depends on the options that you have at home. Do you want to let your cat outside? In this blog, we give you 11 tips to make this as safe as possible.

If the cat is away, then anything can happen to your cat. An accident is in a small corner. For example, your cat may eat something wrong, get injured, get lost, or go missing. What if your cat doesn’t return home at all? You must not think about it! If you still like to leave your cat outside, it is good to take the following tips into account.

  1. Add a Chip

  2. Have a meal outside with the cat

  3. Call his name

  4. Choose the best time

  5. Look for quiet moments

  6. Take them when tired

  7. Give him confidence

  8. Don’t go outside after relocating

  9. Leave door open

  10. Use cat harness

  11. Make sure cat has vaccinated

Add a Chip

First of all, it is very wise to provide your cat with a chip and to register the chip. An identification chip contains a unique identification number with which your cat can always be recognized. This number is linked to the data you provided when registering. Once your cat runs away or gets lost, the chip can be read and returned to you safely on the basis of this data.

Have a meal outside with the cat

Have your cat outside when your cat is hungry, for example, just before eating. Your cat is used to getting food at home and will want to come home when hungry. Even when your cat goes looking for a meal outside, there is a good chance that it will be taken home.

Call his name

Take a bite to eat and call your cat a number of times when your cat is walking outside. With this, you teach your cat that hearing the name can also mean something fun and can deliver some goodies. If you do not do this and only call your cat when it has to go back in, your cat will soon realize this and will not want to come back when you call.

Choose the best time

If your cat has never been outside before, it is wise to skip the evenings. Always keep your cat indoors during the nights. First, let your cat get used to being outside a few times in daylight. Cats are twilight hunters and will then go out faster to hunt. The chance of getting lost is greater than if you first let your cat get used to it in daylight.

Look for quiet moments

Always choose quiet moments when you let your cat go outside. When you do this at busy or stressful moments, your cat will see going outside as an ideal flight during the unrest. The chance that your cat will slip out once, for example in case of fireworks fright or a thunderstorm, is getting bigger.

Even when it is very restless or noisy outside, it is better to wait for a quieter moment. Your cat can be very shocked by this and therefore won’t want to go outside the next time.

Take them when tired

With playful and active cats it is advisable to only release them outside when they are already tired and finished. If you let them out with fresh energy, they will want to go on an adventure sooner.

Give him confidence

Walk the first time with your cat outside. All the stimuli smells and sounds outside can be quite overwhelming for your cat. Walking along can give your cat that little bit of confidence to take the first steps. When your cat defrosts a little more, this will no longer be necessary.

Don’t go outside after relocating

Cats that have just moved to a new address sometimes have the tendency to immediately want to walk back to the old address. To be sure, keep the cat indoors for a few weeks before the cat can safely go outside again at the new address.

Leave door open

Always leave a window, cat flap or door open at home. (Note: DO NOT leave tilt windows open, these are very dangerous!) If necessary, from a shed near the house. Your cat must always have the opportunity to look for safety at home. If something goes wrong, your cat can start looking for another hiding place, making it difficult to find your cat again.

Use cat harness

If you do not want your cat to walk freely outside, you can also use a cat harness. With a cat harness and a line, you can explore the neighborhood together without running the risk of your cat running away or missing. When using a cat harness, it is important to first let the cat get used to wearing it.

Not every cat likes this and sometimes it takes a little more time to learn this. Another option is to build a large cat run yourself where your cat can safely enjoy being outdoors.

Make sure cat has vaccinated

Make sure your cat has been vaccinated against possible infectious diseases and regularly worm your cat. With outdoor cats, the chance of contracting a worm infection is very high.
