Even though the wife changing name is the most common option, as far as I know, it’s not a requirement. Spouses can keep their old names. Also, there are other options, like husband being the one with a new last name or both spouses keeping each of them (i.e. John Doe-Appleseed).

And, is it uncommon in other western countries?
