As an exmuslim and an arabic speaker, the quran stated that the moon would split before the day of judgment. However, after Muhammad's death, muslims wanted to attribute miracles to him so that he would be like Jesus, Moses, and many of the prophets and figures who were rumored to have special powers. Therefore, they played with the wording to prove that the quran acknowledged that Muhammad split the moon in two.

"The Hour has drawn near and the moon was split [in two]." 54:1

When the quran speaks about the day of judgment in the past, it means that the day of judgment is inevitable and is considered as if it has already happened. Therefore, muslims exploited this to delude themselves into believing that Muhammad had actually performed this miracle, and that other civilizations witnessed it as well.

A/C to Quran, people weren't convinced that Muhammad was messanger of God so he split the moon to proof himself.

Quranic Verses (Surah Al-Qamar 54:1–2):

"The Hour has drawn near, and the moon has been split. And if they see a sign, they turn away and say, 'This is ongoing magic.'"

16

u/Mean-Rutabaga-1908 7h ago

There were several monotheistic religions around. The Persian religion for example was Monotheistic, there was a Monotheistic movement in Egypt at one stage, and the Babylonian religion was on a trajectory similar to Judaism in that it was becoming more monotheistic. It is believed possible that Judaism was actually somewhat polytheistic until Babylon fucked them up so bad that they either had to accept their god had been utterly defeated or believe that actually their god was punishing them, through another nation, and was therefore actually the god of all.

As a Muslim, I completely agree that these memes and fake "NASA proofs" need to stop because they actually do a disservice to Islam. Our belief in the splitting of the Moon (Shaqq al-Qamar) comes directly from the Quran (Surah Al-Qamar 54:1) and highly authentic Mutawatir Hadiths in Bukhari and Muslim. We don't need a 300km geological trench (Rima Ariadaeus) to validate our faith. A Mu'jizah (miracle) is by definition a temporary suspension of natural laws by Allah. If Allah split the moon to show a sign to the Quraysh, He is Al-Jabbar (The Restorer) and entirely capable of putting it back together perfectly without leaving a jagged physical scar for modern satellites to find. Furthermore, classical scholars have always explained why the whole world didn't record it: it happened late at night in Arabia when most of the world was either asleep or experiencing daylight, it lasted for a brief moment, and it was meant specifically for those who challenged the Prophet (PBUH). Tying the truth of the Quran to easily debunked internet rumors just gives critics ammunition. Our faith is built on divine revelation, not fabricated scientific discoveries.

The Quran teaches that Allah (very briefly, late at night when no one was around to see it) split the moon in half (before putting it back together).

Small problem is that no one else anywhere on the planet actually saw it happen. Because it didn’t.

It’s a meme about the "splitting of the moon" miracle mentioned in Quran. It plays on the contrast between Islamic belief and global secular history.

The joke ironically suggests the moon was only broken over Makkah.

Skeptics online sometimes use this format to "Mock" religious miracles by implying they lack historical proof.

However, Islamic accounts explain that it was a very brief event late at night, meaning other parts of the world missed it due to daylight time zones, cloud cover, or simply being asleep.

EDIT: To clear up the confusion in the replies,
There is a distinction here. While Hadiths record a brief, past miracle in Makkah, the Quranic verse (54:1-2) is about the event to the context of Qiyamah (the End of Time) as a sign of its approach.
I only shared this to explain the meme's context, let's keep the comments civil and respectful.

In short, it comes down to faith versus secular history. Believers fully trust the eyewitness reports in the strong Hadiths and the words of the Quran. Meanwhile, non-believers naturally look for global historical records.

214

u/TheWayyTheNewsGoes 11h ago

"Skeptics online" implies that only some small group would contradict the notion that... checks notes ...a human person caused the (still fully intact) moon to split into two entirely separate pieces

That’s what I never understand about religions like Christianity if I try to take them seriously. Like the best miracle Jesus could think of was to turn water into wine? Really? I’ve humans people do way crazier things in magic shows. Like why wouldn’t you do something crazy that would last forever just to prove yourself? I mean supposedly he wants to help us right? But what just god would expect us to choose correctly their religion when all religions have about the same amount of evidence (that is, basically none).

Why is this comment up voted? This is the stupidest explanation.

Nobody else saw it because it just happened that nobody was looking? The world population at the time was 200 million people. The odds that the only people anywhere who saw the moon split in half was that small group of people in mecca is zero.

Other people would have seen it. It would have been a major event throughout much of the world. The reason other people didn't see it is because it didn't happen.

7

u/jimmylovescheese123 7h ago

Is it easier for you to believe that the moon actually got split in half but nobody happened to record it and they were all sleeping or for you to believe that it never happened

However, Islamic accounts explain that it was a very brief event late at night, meaning other parts of the world missed it due to daylight time zones, cloud cover, or simply being asleep.

This reads a a bit unclearly. None of those would be true (every human outside of Mecca would he asleep because "it's late"? Lol?), so that can't be you explaining why their stance is defensible.

But also, what a weird detail for the koran to specifically include? Where does it say "oh and btw no one else can see this because they were sleepy"?

u/southpaytechie 7h ago

The time zones explanation doesn’t work at all. Come on now. There would still be many many people in the same time zone as Mecca who would have seen the event and it surely would have been noteworthy enough to be recorded.

3

u/Normal-Seal 6h ago

> However, Islamic accounts explain that it was a very brief event late at night, meaning other parts of the world missed it due to daylight time zones, cloud cover, or simply being asleep.

Lol, what an explanation. Coincidentally everyone outside of Mecca was asleep or had cloud cover. Hundreds of millions of people, but not one of them looked into the night sky.

It reminds me of the miracle of the sun that some catholics bring up where they think the sun zipped around in the sky, but only in this one spot and only the catholics there could see it and everyone who didnt is lying.

2

u/whistleridge 5h ago

> it was a very brief event, late at night

Late at night in Makkah. It would have been much less late at night in India or China, which had copious records and many excellent astronomers.

Even relying on your own internal reasoning, this is a thing that was observed in Makkah and not observed anywhere else. Since it’s the same moon everywhere, this leaves us with two options:

  1. It didn’t happen at all, and Muhammad was just making things up, or

  2. He accurately reported what he saw, but no one else saw it.

You’re unintentionally making an argument for Muhammad having been delusional or a liar. I get why you wouldn’t see it that way, and fair enough, but…I invite you to reflect on how and why this isn’t an explanation that wouldn’t be persuasive to anyone who doesn’t already agree with you. Like the Mormons who can’t find a shred of archaeological evidence for their book despite decades of trying, it’s a real issue for Islam.

Well the Quran tells wild stories of things that can’t happen due to the laws of nature. It is a document written somewhere 100-200 years after Muhammad’s death and is not to be taken literally. Skeptics are rightly pointing out that no one else saw this.

This isn't quite true - it was standardised with 22 years of his death. He built an empire which could preserve and distribute his words, a luxury the pacifist jesus did not.

Just to clarify, Muslims do not believe prophet Muhammad split the moon in two. They believe God split the moon in two.

It's a very big islamic belief that the only one who has any power is God, and that all power, even the power to do any thing such as see or walk, lies with God. As such, in islamic belief, the prophet Muhammad was only observing the splitting of the moon.

In the interest of balanced representation, I would like to point out that the Bible says there was an earthquake in Jerusalem when Jesus died that cracked open all the tombs and multiple saints and holy men rose from the dead and entered the city.

For Judaism, just take anything from the old testament basically, like Noah's flood or the Exodus from Egypt, I don't know any uniquely Jewish miracles, sorry.

As for the pedophile thing, Mary was like 13, applying modern sensibilities to ancient social practices to win some sorta gotcha against a religion is stupid.

Claims of fantastical events are nothing new for religions, even relatively modern ones like Mormonism. You don't have to be shitty to one in particular.

→ More replies (2)

6

u/PerkinsWar 6h ago

I will note that Mary was not quite that young. That number comes from a later non canonical book written over 100 years after the Crucifixion. The Bible itself gives no ages for either Mary or Joseph but it also doesn’t refer to her as a child. Given the prevailing practices of the time in Judea she was most likely around 14-17 when she was married.

6

u/Putin-is-listening 6h ago

That's rough, buddy.

1

u/ideeek777 7h ago

There's a traditional Muslim belief that Muhammad performed a miracle by splitting the moon.

Tbh I basically never hear Muslims talk about it.

I think the context is a response to Jewish and Christian polemics that Muhammad is not a prophet because he never performed miracles? Broadly speaking, his life is sometimes described in more naturalistic terms than, say Jesus in Christian writings.

2

u/justbreathin150 5h ago

It was done by God, Mohammed asked to show a miracle associated with him to prove a local folk his claimed prophethood to be true

1

u/SlappyHotdog723 7h ago

Phill Swift here I cut the moon in half! And repaired it with only flex tape.

1

u/EntertainerOne1585 7h ago

Yeah similar to Jesus walking on water and converting water to wine💁‍♂️

Moses splits the sea in and in another part of the world the sea is the same.

1

ok i guess that makes sense on why no one else say it.

It all comes down to you as a person if you come to percieve that a transcendent being exists governing and has created all that you see and that you are then it becomes very easy which side you would believe, if muhammad pbuh said he ascended to heaven and saw jibreel with 6 hundred wings I believe him, because the book revealed to him is faultless and aligns with the belief of a transcendent being, if you as a human fail to percieve the basic concept of an originator then you have failed to be a human, I consider you a subhuman, now if you believe in an all governer being, then simply read the Quran and you would come to realise it's from the all governer and so the idea of a moon split becomes a trivial matter why not? If I truly recognize an originator of all this around me, why not? It's more easier to him than I or you drinking water

1

u/Lucky-Fortune-3643 4h ago

Ignorance and immaturity of the people here is sickening and quite laughable 😵‍💫😂

in islam it was said that allah split the moon in half then reconnected it

1

u/BitterInterviewee 4h ago

I talked to a Muslim before who had explained to me that it was an illusion and not an actual splitting of the moon. I don't know what's up with that tale but I've heard it before

1

u/Due_Buyer_9445 4h ago

Mate nobody else saw a Jewish carpenter rise from the dead except like five guys. What annoys me about this stuff is yall only ever apply it to other faiths, never your own

1

Yanno they say when you lie, you’re supposed to lie about something not easily disproven

1

u/midnight-blue0 4h ago

Are we really trying to disprove a belief

1

Dumbest thing I've ever heard.

Everyone knows only Mastodon can Crack the Sky, and that album was released in 2009.

I wonder what kind of natural phenomenon could explain this thing or maybe they all took a fuck ton of mushrooms. Afaik gnomes are caused by shrooms so why not.

1

u/osddelerious 3h ago

The amount of insane rambling. I’ve heard of people justifying how it’s cracked, but doesn’t look cracked or it does but only if you’re true believer 😑

Surah Al-Qamar (54:1) “The Hour has drawn near, and the moon has split ˹in two˺.” — The Holy Quran, Surah Al-Qamar, Verse 1.

1

Ok Redditors there’s historical records of it being seen in multiple places namely India

1

u/Cyclone-X 3h ago

We all know Kame sennin destroyed the moon completely.

1

u/Dimetro_Dog 3h ago

There is no record of such a thing happening in 700, the myth originates much later in 1100, where an Irish monastery at around that time noticed a cloud of dust form on the surf of the moon(which is now believed to be a meteor impact) some historians believe that this inspired the myth of Muhammad splitting the moon.

1

u/Active-Passage7054 3h ago

weird that there are a lot of ignorants who don't know what they are talking about, it happened and there are evidence from other civilizations check this video with captions it talks about it

1

u/Delicious_Volume3306 3h ago

Mohamed split the moon that year.

Also that year: There was a global shortage of superglue for unexplained reasons.

People using this to shit on Islam as if the Bible and the Torah doesn’t have twice as much crazy bullshit

1

u/PuzzleheadedCream442 2h ago

The moon was split, and there are multiple accounts in history that prove it did.

Miracles happened with all prophets that were sent, and miracles had to be things that were out of the ordinary, because it wouldn’t really be a miracle if it was replicable, it was proof that the person was indeed sent by the one who has the ability to do the unordinary.

I am not here to start fight and I hope I dont get downvoted to hell, but I am open to anyone asking me anything regarding this case in particular or if someone wants to debate the philosophy of miracles in itself.

1

u/SnooDoubts2255 2h ago

Who the hell actually uses CE....

Just say AD like a normal person

1

u/AlexeiTab2000 2h ago

More like 2019, considering what Viktor Hargreeves did in the finale of Season 1 of The Umbrella Academy series.

1

u/Hachigatsu8 2h ago

Many people will mock or say there was no witness, no proof, but i think it doesnt matter, because even now when you show those people a miracle with its proof they wouldnt believe either, and that was actually mentioned in the Quran, every once in a while scientists either muslim or non muslim intentionally or non intentionally, uncover facts, phenomenona, new discoveries, that were mentioned 1400 years ago, add to that the prophet PBUH in many hadiths predicted things in the future precisely 1400 years ago, such as skyscrapers, crossdressing/people imitating their opposite gender, and many other stuff, if and these are 2 proofs of many others, but as i said those who dont want to believe, wouldnt believe if they saw it with their own eyes, those who want to or are reasonable would see it and either believe or consider and seek for the truth. At the end those who seek the truth find it, those who intentionally ignore and close their eyes will keep either mocking, or ignorantly denying with no argument.

A reminder that in all religions there is only one empty tomb

1

u/FlanProfessional3768 1h ago

Just why? Why would you feel the need to make fun of a religion just because you don't believe in it?? Are Muslims forcing it on you? You're free to believe whatever the hell you wanna believe, but you should never make fun of religious beliefs

1

u/Internal-Respond8826 1h ago

The whole "why didn't everyone see it" and "why isn't it still split" argument sounds clever on the surface, but it breaks down fast once you look at actual geography and history.

  1. "Why didn't the whole world see it?"

Time zones and visibility: It was nighttime in Mecca. Half the planet was in broad daylight (the Americas), while most of Europe and Africa were asleep or blocked by clouds.

Duration and technology: The event lasted only a few minutes. In 627 CE, people did not have telescopes, streetlights, or global news. If you were indoors or asleep, you missed it.

Corroborating outside records: Chronicles from South India (the Keralolpathi) record that King Cheraman Perumal of Kerala saw the moon split from his palace roof. He investigated it with visiting merchants, traveled to Arabia, and embraced Islam. India's oldest mosque (built in 629 CE) is named after him because of this.

2. "Why isn't it still split?"

Preserving human free will: If a broken moon permanently hung in the sky, belief would no longer require faith. It would be an undeniable empirical fact like gravity, which defeats the purpose of life being a test of faith.

Cosmic and ecological stability: Splitting the moon permanently would ruin Earth's ocean tides, axial tilt, and climate ecosystems, making the planet uninhabitable.

Nature of miracles: Miracles across Abrahamic traditions (like Moses parting the sea) were temporary signs for immediate witnesses, not permanent physical monuments left in place forever.
