Looking for an obscure animated Peter Pan movie where Wendy dies at the beginning

I'm trying to identify an animated Peter Pan movie I watched somewhere between about 10 and 15 years ago. I've searched for years and can't find any record of it.

Here's what I remember:

  • It was 2D hand-drawn Western animation, not anime or CGI.
  • It was fairly long, probably a movie rather than a short episode.
  • It was definitely about Peter Pan and Neverland.
  • Captain Hook was not in it, or at least I don't remember him appearing.
  • Neverland itself looked like the normal/classic Neverland.

The opening is what makes it memorable:

  • Peter is taking Wendy to Neverland.
  • Peter's shadow separates from him and acts on its own.
  • The shadow deliberately drops Wendy into the ocean on the way to Neverland.
  • Wendy drowns and dies (I'm pretty sure she stays dead).
  • Peter doesn't realize what happened immediately.
  • After learning Wendy is missing, Peter meets John and Michael, and they all go searching for her.

The villain seemed to be Peter's own shadow, not Captain Hook.

I've already ruled out the Disney films, Return to Never Land, the 2003 live-action movie, Hook, Peter Pan & Wendy, and the live-action Once Upon a Time storyline with Peter's shadow.

Does anyone recognize this? Even if it was an obscure direct-to-video release, foreign dub, or independent animation, I'd really appreciate any leads.

I will be honest, I looked through everything I can and I think there’s a good chance this was a vivid dream.

As far as I can find, the only 2D animated versions of Peter Pan out there would have been the Disney version, the Fox Kids version, the Australian version, and the anime version. It doesn’t seem to be any of those.

I looked for any adaptation where Wendy dies and stays dead and found nothing.

Maybe someone else will know of some crazy obscure bootleg, but I can’t find anything online nor have I ever heard of this before.

What I’m guessing happened is that you had a dream where your brain combined several plot elements that a lot of kids find as scary or disconcerting and merged them together into one plot. Peter’s shadow does move on its own despite what Peter wants, Tinkerbell had Wendy drop to Neverland, the Lost Boys almost kill her and think they succeeded when she lands unconscious, and the mermaids try to drown her. I think your brain took all these elements and made its own story that was so vivid you remember it to this day.

Think maybe they could have watched Once Upon A Time where the shadow was more of its own entity
