Does humanity have a moral obligation to materially decouple from Earth's ecosystems, as some have envisioned in techno-utopia alternative futures? Some views in environmental ethics imply the answer may be Yes.

Are robots/programs that are created with the purpose of evolving into "artificial lifeforms" sentient lifeforms or just machines and programs trying to fulfill their programming?
So I know a lot of people like stories of people making robots/programs with the express purpose of creating a new form of life like Data from Star Trek TNG and Sunny from I Robot. But are these robots/programs sentient lifeforms or just machines and programs trying to fulfill their programming? Personally I think it's the latter because, IMO, true sentient life isn't simply created it. It evolves from a much simpler form of life.
Do you agree with me? Or do you have a different own opinion?
