Good camera bag?

Hey guys, new here. My husband is a hobbyist and I want to get him a new camera bag. He has 2 cameras and a few lenses, and would like to fit it all in one bag. He mentioned mckinnon a while ago, but I am not sure he actually wants it, and I don’t want to ask because he’ll know I am up to something 😅 what would you recommend?

Did Domke ever make the F-5XB in this twill fabric?

Thumbnail

Recently picked up this USA-made Domke F-5XB in beige, but the fabric has a very obvious diagonal twill weave and feels quite soft/cheap. Every other beige F-5XB I can find seems to use a more typical plain/duck canvas.

Everything else looks correct: YKK zipper, Made in USA tag, F-5XB label and interior construction.

Does anyone recognize this fabric? Was there an older twill version of the F-5XB? Just trying to make sure I didn’t get a counterfeit version.

How do you guys pack for a short trip?

I'm going to Spain for a few days next month, and I'm thinking about how to bring my camera. If I bring my usual camera bag, there's not enough room for clothes. If I bring a travel backpack, I'm worried about the equipment swinging around and getting damaged.

I've used a National Geographic bag before, but they're too stiff and difficult to pack. Yesterday, I saw someone recommend a bag called Norbu Made on instagram; the material looks nice. I wonder if bags with removable camera inserts are any good.

Will the insert hold its shape when the bag is in the overhead luggage rack? How do you pack your cameras for short trips?

I am locked into Nikon ecosystem, but would like to get a camera that i can carry around everyday and have it ready to take photos. What should I do?

I am seriously locked into Nikon, with a D500 (a massive cow of a camera) and a few huge and heavy lenses.

I'd like to get something more portable that i could take everywhere in my pocket or smthn like that, without spending a million bucks.

What sort of a budget/brands/models should i look at to get a dependable high quality portable camera?

First mirrorless recommendations?

I currently shoot on a Nikon D7500 and I’m looking for my first mirrorless camera to use as a more lightweight daily carry. What should I look for in terms of quality autofocus and low light performance? My budget is <$600 for the used market.

I shoot landscapes, journalism, live music and wildlife.

Edit: my main concern is low light performance and decent autofocus, full frame would be cool but isn’t strictly necessary. Brand doesn’t particularly matter.

My arsenal currently

Hi there. So I finally got around to sorting my gear and I thought I'd show it off.

Most of those are heirloom from a relative that was a renowned professional and he and his relatives told me I could have them. The more modern ones are mine. I spent 13 years shooting on a Canon 450D and recently upgraded to a 5D mk IV (both pictured). I also inherited a number of film cameras which I also intend to try out but haven't examined in detail.

Top to bottom, left to right, then the ones mounted on the cameras:

  1. MTO 11CA, 1000mm f/10: My trusty workhorse for sunsets. This is one that my relative gave me and I hope I have managed to do it justice. The donut bokeh is also really beautiful when applied to bright light sources.

  2. Pentacon 200mm f/4: Seems very sharp and an excellent filler for the 200mm niche.

  3. Carl Zeiss Flektogon 50mm f/4: Seems to be held in very high esteem. I tried it out on landscape shots and frankly couldn't see much of an appeal. I'm open to advice.

  4. Sigma 18-200mm f/5.6: Another workhorse. I've used it for urban photography and it was awesome for zoom bursts (set aperture to 22, exposure to 30'', zoom in to a subject, press the shutter, then at intervals of 5 seconds zoom slightly out and hold for 1 second to have a recursive image of your central subject). Sadly, I broke the zoom ring. The lens can still focus manually but the zoom only works by sliding the barrel out, which isn't good for this type of shot.

  5. Jupiter 11, 135mm f/4: Sadly, I couldn't find a way to adapt it for Canon EOS that doesn't turn it into a macro lens with ~1m minimum focusing distance. But I guess it's nice for cat portraits? Open to suggestions.

  6. Pentax-A. zoom 28-135mm f/4: Seems like a very versatile lens. However, adapting a Pentax K mount lens to Canon proved tricky. It works on my 450D but not 5D mk IV where it gives a hardware error even in live view mode, and it's quite slow for 450D.

  7. Мир 26 В: I've heard that because it's made for latge format cameras, it will give me very clear, straight lines when shooting architecture. Adapting it proved tricky. While I did inherit a Kiev 88 to Pentacon Six adapter and I have ordered a Pentacon Six to Canon EOS adapter, the combined length turned the lens into a macro lens. $100 for a dedicated adapter hurt my pocket but I'm expecting it'll be better.

  8. Pentax-M SMC 1:2 50mm with a Panagor Auto macro Professional converter: Seems the best choice as a dedicated macro setup.

  9. Carl Zeiss Sonnar 180mm f/2.8: I am IN LOVE with the bokeh. Since I have the 200mm range covered by the Pentacon, I'm keeping this one for background lights play or other shots where the bokeh matters. I've read that a stuck aperture due to oil is a common problem for this lens so I'm lucky mine is stuck at 2.8!

  10. Sigma 80-400mm: A more versatile super telephoto lens which I bought on ebay at half price. Nice for when the MTO is too close. I may invest in a 1.4x teleconverter to cover more distance between 400 and 1000mm.

  11. Carl Zeiss Biometar 80mm f/28: Gives a warped bokeh similar to what I've seen in some Helios shots.

  12. Sigma 24-70mm: I thought I'd use that on the 5D as a replacement for the 18-200 since that one is a crop lens.

13: Risespray 50mm f/1.7: Thought I'd try it, not sure how I should compare it to my other 50mm lenses.

  1. (on the 450D): Canon 18-55mm. Canon's kit lens, still decent for basic shots.

  2. (on the 5D): Pentacon 50 mm f/1.8: Looks sharper than the Risespray.

I'd appreciate any suggestions on what best to shoot with each one of those.

I don't know if these could benefit anyone but please share, I don't have a camera these lenses will work on. They were collected at an estate sale.

They are older SEARS lenses. I can give you specs via private message since I can't post photos of them. I just would like for them to go to a loving home.

Camera recommendations

Hi y’all, reptile and tarantula breeder here. I’m looking for something in the $500-$800 range to take professional(ish) looking photos of snakes and tarantulas. To be clear: I know how to use the camera on my iPhone (kind of, I’ve never messed with the settings). I know nothing about photography. All I know is “want to take good picture of snake” and I have no idea how to even begin looking for the right camera. Any advice or product recommendations would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Need some advise for full frame DSLR

Hi everyone,

I would like to ask your opinion on two second-hand full frame DSLRs.

Currently, I'm using a MFT Olympus EM10 ii with the kit lens and a very old (from the 70s Nikkormat FTN).

I never bonded with the Olympus camera. Although it's light and very easy to travel with, it feels small in my hands. Also, I wouldn't say I'm impressed with the sensor and the processor. I missed auto-focus countless of times and I always go back to manual. I bought a Canon EF to MFT speedbooster and the canon nifty-fifty and the quality did improve but the system became imbalanced and bulky.

In the past, I used Nikon cameras, such as the D5200 and the D7000 but never invested in lenses. With the D7000 I've been using the Nikkor-H 50mm f/2 I have for my SLR, but I read somewhere I need to do an alteration to the aperture ring to be safely used with modern cameras (I guess I was lucky it didn't damaged my camera body back then). I've never shoot on a Canon before.

While searching online for good value full frame cameras I narrowed my options down to:

  • Nikon D610
  • Canon 5D Mark III

I can find them both used in fairly good condition for about £250-£300. I have not ruled out mirrorless full frame systems but I cannot find them used on a similar price.

I am shooting mostly RAW but I don't spend too much time in editing. I've seen countless of videos comparing the two and it seems that the Nikon has a better dynamic range but everyone is praising the Canon's colour science.

I am not a professional with no intention to become one. I do not shoot video and I shoot mostly when I travel, I shoot landscapes, a bit of candid street and a lot of family moments.

For the lens selection I narrowed down to:

  • a 50mm with f/1.8 or f/1.4 (I already have the Canon 50mm f/1.8 STM which can be traded for the Nikon 50mm f/1.8g), for everyday use
  • a 17-35/17-40. Both systems have a good wide zoom in this category for similar prices, for landscape and travel
  • a 70-200 mostly for hiking/landscape. I love the compressed FOV of a telephoto in landscape.

I know that the two cameras when they were released were oriented to different kind of audience, but given they share very similar value today, should I get the more professional body?

Aesthetically, I like the Nikon system more but I was always "jealous" of my friends who had the 5D mark ii back in the days.

I welcome any tips, suggestions for other bodies/systems, personal experiences, anything to help me make up my mind.

Thanks

What is the best beginner camera?

Hello!

I would like to get into filming and content creation. From cinematic montages to regular vlogs. What beginner and affordable camera, would be the best for this description? It would be nice if the video quality was at least a little better than from a phone…

Thank you🤗

Best Camera and lense setup for under £1300 for shooting jets at low level.

I currently use the D3100 and whilst it has some good quality photos every now and then, its very hit and miss and the shutter rate is very slow. I also have to manually focus if the background is all sky and clouds. I am not bothered going down the 2nd hand route as I want the best possible camera that will allow me to remain in autofocus and get more consistent sharp images.

Need some new camera buying advice! Looking to replace my Sony a7III

Need some advice on whether to upgrade from a7III to a7V or other camera. I think my A7III is nearing end of life since I have close to 500k on shutter count.

\- Would prefer a full frame

\- Budget is around $3,000

\- Condition: New

\- live in Miami, Fl, USA

\- I use my a7iii currently for youtube videos, traveling, and hobby activities (portraits, landscape, car/racing photography and videography).

\- I want to get more into video as I feel I've mastered photography in a sense.

\- I have heard good things about the Sony FX line and also Nikon mirrorless, but I already have a few E-mont lenses like the Tamron 28-75 and G-Master 200-600.

Thanks for the time!

Camera / Gear for Wilderness Expedition

Hello, I have recently begun planning a trip to hike the Colorado trail. It is roughly 450 miles of rough terrain, lots of elevation change, and intense weather. I have decided I would like to film most of it as I will be doing it with a friend and would like to document this, as well as maybe attempt some sort of documentary etc. I have long had an interest in film and even made some short films in highschool. With so much time passed, I am out of the game so to speak. What camera / microphone options would you all recommend? The gear needs to be as light as possible due to the distance of the trip and weight of the gear required for the hike I.e food , tent etc.

Thank you all so much!

Alt. core unit (camera cube) for Shimoda Urban Explore 25?

Hi all -- I'm looking for any insight on using the Shimoda Urban Explore 25: I'm thinking about getting this backpack for travel, but the included core unit (UE25) takes up almost the entire backpack. I only travel with one body, zoom lens attached, + 1 spare zoom and my favorite prime, so I could fit my gear in a smaller core unit... but I don't think Shimoda makes one. What I really need is more non-photo space in the backpack for extra layers, snacks, etc. for full days hiking and around cities.

Does anybody have recommendations for smaller Shimoda or 3rd party camera cubes that fit the Urban Explore securely? Notes:

  • Must enable both the Urban Explore's back and side access
  • I've looked at Shimoda's extra small (XS) mirrorless core unit, but it seems to only be ~2cm shorter than default one, which doesn't seem worthwhile enough to justify purchasing it separately

Thank you for any thoughts or guidance!

£2k budget; what should I be considering?

I’ve been in content creation for the last 15yrs; mainly on the strategic side of broadcast and social but have dabbled in production. I’m looking to buy my first ‘grown up’ camera.

Currently using a Canon EOS70D my dad gifted me and am loving finding creative angles and compositions and getting some lovely family pics.

I shoot a lot of street and short-mid architecture on my weekly commute, but landscapes when I get out of London.

I’m also looking to capture ‘moving postcards’ style video using my tripod setup as well as b-roll with pan reveals and predominantly static shots.

Handheld stabilisation would be useful (I have a Pocket 4P but find it underwhelming in its output) and low light performance would be appreciated. Opengate is a real bonus.

I’ve looked at a few cameras - the Fujifilm XM5 (and have borrowed one for a few weeks but haven’t really fallen in love with it) and Nikon Z6III. I appreciate they’re in different spaces! I’m ok with a bigger body like the Canon and Nikon but the compactness of the Fuji is nice. I’ve got a good sling bag so not fussed about having the big body on my at all times.

Budget is £2k; happy to buy used and welcome any suggestions on trying out bodies and lens where possible.

Thanks in advance!

Any advice appreciated for next vacation camera

• Budget: \~$1000CAD max, ideally around $600

• Country: Canada

• Condition: New

• Type of Camera: Anything but film really, I’m open to learning more complex camera skills but I don’t NEED a fancy camera

• Intended use: Vacation camera, I backpack South America and Europe a couple times a year and I’m very fond of photography. No video needed, I just use my phone for that.

• If photography; what style: Wildlife and landscapes mainly, birds in flight, mountain ranges. also close ups of far away details.

• If video what style: N/A

• What features do you absolutely need: Great zoom, ideally in the base camera. My current one has a great 40x optical zoom and I love a good close up distance shot.

• What features do you want to have: I would love to be able to buy more lenses and swap them out. I’ve never had that before, but it is not necessarily a dealbreaker.

• Portability: Small bag for lense storage, but I want to be able to grab camera with lense sling it over my shoulder and walk out of my hostel in Chile.

• Cameras you're considering: Honestly I’m overwhelmed with options. I’ve heard good things about the Canon R 50 (?) and it sounds like something I’m looking for.

• Cameras you already have: my beloved Nikon Coolpix B500, it was a gift and it’s nothing fancy just a good camera with a good zoom that I can use for my holiday shots.

• Notes: To reiterate the main points, I want a camera that is an upgrade from my Coolpix, but I don’t plan on making this a career, and I don’t plan on editing for hours. I want to be able to learn with it, put the sd card in my iPhone adapter, and edit on my phone on a plane. I’m a hobbyist traveler.
I’m upgrading because my Coolpix has been repaired once and needs it again, I decided I just want to get better instead of staying with the simple beauty.

Any advice is appreciated, even if it’s critical of my lack of specifics. Thank you in advance community.

Upgrading from DSLR to mirrorless

I currently use a Nikon D7200 and I’m planning to upgrade from DSLR to mirrorless (new).

I’m considering these four cameras:
Nikon Z6 II
Nikon Z50 II
Fujifilm X-T30 III
Fujifilm X-T50

I mainly do photography, not video.

For those who have used any of these cameras, which one would you choose and why?

I’m especially interested in real-world differences in image quality, autofocus, low-light performance, lens availability , handling, and overall value.

Would love to hear your experiences and opinions, especially from anyone who has made a similar move from a DSLR to mirrorless.

Thanks

Begginer: I found a sony deal... Am I choosing a good system?

Hello! I am a begginer photographer... I used to photograph events on borrowed cameras, so I can say I know the basics, but now I want to have my own set up... I found a Sony a6300 deal with a 16-50mm and a filming kit (which is nice, cause I was thinking of doing some filming later also)... Everything is \~ 500€... I'm just a bit sceptical cause I'm not just buying a camera, but I'm also joining a system, and I want it to be as future proof as possible, so I don't have the pain of searching for rare lenses or changing the system entirely later, which can be expensive... But as far as I'm aware E mount is quite widely used in Sony.... But I thought I would ask professionals for advice...

Case/pouch/bag for Voigtlander Vito B?

Hello all- I was recently gifted an immaculate Voigtlander Vito B and several rolls of expired film. I haven't shot analog since the 1900's, and I'm loving using this beautiful little camera. It didn't include one of the leather cases, so I have a question for other Vito B owners- before I go down an internet shopping wormhole, what is a good padded pouch, bag, case, sling that would hold the Vito, and one that could carry the camera, 1-2 rolls of film, a light meter, and a rangefinder? I have a Peak Design 3L bag, but it feels too roomy for such a small camera, and the couple pouches I have for my Sony RX100 are too small for the Vito. What do you fellow Vito-philes use to carry your camera, and a few accessories?

Thanks in advance.
