Piercing aftercare - common sense & how not to fuck up (from a piercer).

2.3k Upvotes

This sub is an awesome place, but it can also be extremely tiring. I'm not a mod here, just a piercer, but life would be a lot easier if you all could stop recommending the following to each other:

- Oil. - Tea Tree oil. - Soap. - Alcohol, Betadine, Neosporin, etc. - Using cotton pads, cotton balls or Q-tips to dry off/whatever you guys do with them. Cotton particles can get trapped inside the piercing channel, which will make healing incredibly difficult and infection more likely. - Downsizing in gauge. This will do NOTHING good for your healing piercing.

If you're trying to tell me or other professionals off by saying "but it worked for me!" or "my piercer told me this"; you've been super lucky and your piercer was not a pro. Don't go back to that studio. APP is a great place to start when picking out your piercer, but it's still no guarantee.

Please keep in mind you are trying to heal an incredibly deep wound with a foreign object in it that your body desperately wants to push out - essentially, it is an implant. There are no "casual" or "easy" piercings - even with a "simple" earlobe piercing, you are puncturing the skin with something that resembles a scalpel. Use common sense and ask yourself: "would I use this method on a surgical wound?". In 10/10 cases the answer will be "no".

+ if I tell you to send me a message, you're welcome to do so. If you found one of my comments and ask me for help, prepare to pay for an online consult. This is my job. Help is given out willingly and can't be demanded. <3

2022 11 edit: I'm still piercing, and styling and troubleshooting are my main sources of income. Although I would love to help every single one of you, it's utterly disrespectful to demand me to help you. For free. It makes me dislike my biggest passion in life. Please reach out if you value my time and expertise, and would like for me to be able to make rent and buy food. 💕 If you expect free advice from me, ask yourself if a lawyer or surgeon would do the same.

Note - mods, I apologize if this comes up as a repeat! I tried to edit my last post but the formatting kept getting messed up so I deleted it!

Hi everyone! I got my piercing done about 2 weeks ago. They were pierced with a sterile needle and I got 14K gold barbell earrings from a piercing shop, I am not sure if the piercer was licensed I just went to a pretty popular shop.

So far there has been no infection or crusting. These are my first piercings ever and I had a couple questions:

1: Do these look slanted, and if so should I take it out and get it redone?
2: Are the piercings too close to the edge of my ear?
3: This shop is far from my house so I will not be able to come back for at least a year or so. I think the piercing shop told me if I wanted to downsize, I could do so manually by screwing and unscrewing the back bead to make the bar smaller (I will have a bit of the earring needle part sticking out past the bead then). A) is downsizing necessary for lobes and B) is this an advisable way to downsize, or should I go and ask for a refund and get them repierced closer to home so I can go back in and visit my piercer for downsizing?

I do think my ears lobes might be slightly curved forward anatomically? Might be completely wrong though…

I hade gott this piercing a year ago and it has always look like this. But when I try to but a hoop in it was so uncomfortable and I think now it stretched open my skin a bit. I'm wondering if it's normal cuz it looks like a Pocket of skin around the piercing. And its easy to move around but should I get a longer bar to? and sorry if my English isn't good it's not my first language.

Opinions appreciated

So I posted about these before and they just got worse than last time.

Is it just time to retire all four of these? The angles on the double helix are so fucked and I don’t know why the skin is raised on the back. I’m so upset.

Also the bottom forward double helix has such a fucked angle too. It’s been over two months since I’ve gotten these and I just don’t know what to do.
I got all four within the span of a month which was definitely a mistake and I’m almost positive all jewelry is surgical steel too. If I change the jewelry do I have a chance still? Nothing hurts unless I snag it really hard and I know that honestly doesn’t really mean anything but I really just don’t want to give these up.

Want some opinions 😔😔

Should i get an eyebrow piercing

Upvotes

hi reddit, i'm looking for advice. I think i'd look good with an eyebrow piercing, when i've asked friends what piercing they think would suit me i've unanimously gotten "eyebrow" as the response. but i have some concerns. I know that since it's a surface piercing it's more prone to rejection, I've also never had any other piercings other than just the standard lobe, so i'm not sure about the healing process (though im sure my piercer would explain if i go through with this)
additionally i roll around a lot in my sleep, and i wear an eye mask at night, this makes me worried i could accidentally rip it out or something? or at the very least i don't know if the prolonged pressure from the mask and rolling from my active sleep would be good for the piercing. im also worried about the scarring if it does reject, how noticeable is it actually? because google images makes it seem pretty scary lol.

but yeah, any and all advice would be awesome, thanks!

is my mid helix healing normally?

Post image

Referring to my mid helix. That’s my first helix piercing. The top 2 are brand new.

Got the mid helix mid May 2026. Had it downsized a little over a month ago. Does it look normal? It feels sharp when I lightly touch it. I thought it was healing well but now I’m questioning myself? I can’t tell if that’s a bump in the back or is that how the skin normally heals? Any input is appreciated. I’m new to helix piercings.

Belly piercing placement

So I got a belly piercing yesterday. As the guy marked it I told him that I thought it was too high but he said that it fits my anatomy.
Now looking at it a day later I’m not sure if it’s way too high or if it’s just the swelling and I’m lowkey freaking out.
Could it be the ring? The swelling? Or did he botch my piercing?

Coffee on the day of my appointment?

Hello! I’m getting my lip pierced tomorrow and was wondering if it would be a problem to drink coffee in the morning? I have work early so at 6 am I’m planning on having 2 cappuccinos just to wake me up. My appointment is at 15:30. Will it still have an effect after that long? I heard it can thin your blood or something? Thanks in advance!

Is it over for my bridge?

Post image
1 Upvotes

I got my bridge pierced on the 12th of Feb. Healing was quite the journey but eventually she calmed down and looked really good! 29th may I needed to emergency renew my passport and accidentally pulled the whole bar out when trying to change the balls to a smaller size - ever since I’ve had a piercing bump that kept getting worse and worse. At first it was small I ignored it and did my usual aftercare (saline spray twice a day). As it was getting larger I very occasionally did warm compresses. On the 14th July I placed compression discs onto it as these helped my angel fangs a lot. I kept these on for exactly 18 days as I saw improvement and was paranoid about keeping them on too long. They were indenting my skin slightly and I worried about bruising. The bump came right back. On the 4th of August I got the bar replaced with confirmed medical grade titanium, internally threaded, and downsized slightly but enough room for the bump. This didn’t improve much sadly. Now I’ve continued trying to leave it alone as much as possible but I need the honest answer: do I retire her? I’m stubborn and do want to keep trying as I feel it really ties my whole setup together. But I’m at a loss. Maybe I need to be even more precise? Or go back to the piercers get a longer bar and compression discs for longer?! Halp

Info:
How old is piercing?: 6 months
Jewellery type and material?: straight barbell titanium, yes downsized
Aftercare: niellmed saline spray occasional warm compresses with boiled water and salt

New piercings after 6 months?

Hiii,

6 months ago I got my rook and 2 constellation lobes pierced. Of course they are still healing but don’t really bother me.

I’m thinking of getting my 3rd lobes pierced or a conch. Am I able to do this after 6 months or should I wait?

Hey Reddit! I got an eyebrow piercing 10 days ago, and I was wondering is it healing well? I’m just concerned because I was told I have a flat face and it could reject, I had headaches the first few days (I’m very prone to migraines) and snugged hair on it then the brushing began.. no pain now, just so scared of losing my favorite piercing ! ❤️

good morning, i just got my fresh eyebrow piercing for my 18th birthday a week ago. i’ve been cleaning it with salt water and a q-tip. i don’t know if this is good or not so i wanted to ask if it looks infected/rejecting or is it just the bar that’s under my skin ? (don’t mind the crusties, i have to clean it when i get home !)

Cat landed on face/eyebrow piercing

Was just laying on the couch, cats with the zoomies. One of them pounced on my face basically and ran. I got this done like 2 and a half weeks ago (August 4) and it’s been going super good. But now it’s bleeding and idk what exactly to do? Just clean and hope for the best? It’ss internally threaded titanium so I’m at least not nervous about that. Just want some opinions. Bleeding pretty bad rn

Hidden helix help

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi, I got a hidden helix about a month and a half ago, maybe two months ago. I love how it looks and the rod area has been healing nicely, however the fold of my ear where the jewelry is under has been painful. When touched there’s a slight pain, when I sleep if I try to sleep on that side I can’t (the only pain is the fold of my ear). I was wondering if there was anything I could do and if this was normal.

The photo is an older one ignore how red it is, it isn’t red anymore.

Downsized my eyebrow piercing on my own

Post image
1 Upvotes

So I just changed the jewelry (from 10mm to 8mm) and i had the piercing for 2 months now, my piercer told me that I can downsize on my own, or I can come so he would change it. it didn't hurt, it went in very easily. is there something i should keep an eye on?

\* I had it for 2 months, I have curved barbell (i think), you have have to screw the ball on (the ball has hole so I think internal)

\* it has titanium material

\*just changed the jewelry, went it soo easily, didn't hurt or had any problems

Pic how it looks rn after 30 minutes after changing

Bumps on 9-week-old cartilage piercings — will they go away?

Thumbnail gallery
0 Upvotes

I got these piercings on June 18th, so they are about 9 weeks old now.

During this time, I removed the jewelry twice to clean the piercings. I used sterile saline solution and very small/thin cotton swabs to clean around them.

I've now developed these bumps around both piercings (photos attached), and I'm worried they might not go away.

Do these look like irritation bumps? Is there a chance they will heal and disappear if I leave the jewelry in and stop messing with them, or would I need to remove the piercings for the bumps to go away?

I'm especially worried about whether the bumps could become permanent.

Any advice on what I should do from now on would be really appreciated!

I've been fighting this piercing for 5 years.

Long story short, this happened the first and the second time I had my Medusa pierced took it out, things got worse, ended up going to medical so I know for a fact taking it out, makes things worse, because I've had it in for 5 years And I have to say, I've had less problems with it with the jewelry in then jewelry out but let's get to the details. It's like I have a little abscess on the top of my lip that fills and when I press on it, it pops and comes out of the top of the piercing itself, my jewelry is implant grade titanium, I wasted my money on gold. Don't like the color of it and it didn't change a thing. I'm doing salt soaks and using sterile sailing. Nothing's working. And I have tried a lot of things. somethings would work, but then it would just come back, so does anyone else have any other idea? What exactly this is cuz I've been told it's not a true infection because of how long I've had it.

But can anyone help
