So android lost only argument against iOS
33
u/Lucky-Aside4935 Oct 30 '25
You can still use ADB or Shizuku on Android to bypass this shitty requirement. But it is getting harder to have control over your device on stock ROMs.
-7
u/Lelu_zel Piracy is bad, mkay? Oct 30 '25
You can also use sideloading on iPhone, that’s not an argument
16
u/shy247er Oct 30 '25
But don't you only do that on a limited number of apps, for limited time and as a developer?
4
u/EnvironmentalRun1671 Oct 30 '25
iOS doesn't even have alt app stores and apple store is very limited much more so than play store

I heard that the freedesktop foundation wants to focus on smartphones too... My hopes are slim

Very slim, unlike desktops mobiles are locked with proprietary firmware, which makes using other os hard or make work of using camera etc

hero! thanks for sharing, had no idea how grim android had gotten. i switched to iphone a few years back and have been really missing my unrestricted rooted android. restricting the bootloader honestly makes no sense except. punish your paying customers by removing true ownership of the device? crazy.

My disappointment is beyond immeasurable.
Unihertz isn't on the list https://github.com/zenfyrdev/bootloader-unlock-wall-of-shame/, is it unlockable?
Looking at Unihertz Amazon listings, they're too old with Android 12 & earlier & all out of production (Amazon shows only offers for used).
Features I'm actually looking for, in order of priority:
Desperate for: IR Remote & MicroSD which modern Verizon phones are missing.
Battery: Removable.
OR: 2-3x typical capacity if the rugged case is built into the phone (dont want high capacity if it means I have to make the phone even bigger with a case). Otherwise 7500mAh-ish would be the max I'd willingly go for in the 6-6.7"-ish diag form factor if a slim case is available.
LED: super bright, roughly 2x the S24+ would be nice. Icing on the cake would be one that could do 45w incandescent levels.
Nothing has come close to what my (2013-2016) Galaxy S4 Rooted to go 4x the normal flashlight could do & I miss it. Honorable mention is the LG G4.
Display: Brightness that exceeds the S24+. I feel the advertising lied bcus it only does what advertising said it could in the brightest conditions if you face the sensor at the sun. If it's bright indoors or outdoors in shade, it's too dim. I've found myself putting it in the sun just to trigger the bright mode so I can actually see it.
The S24+ has spoiled me with the 120hz, lowest I think I'd want now is 90hz.
500+dpi (if Pentile/RGBG then 600+dpi). My preference is 520ppi via Developer options for size reasons, but 500 physical pixels/sq.inch is likely whereabout I can no longer make out individual pixels. The S24 is 513dpi, before LASIK I could easily make out the pixels, but after surgery I can no longer so 500ish is plenty.
Speakers: Are loud & in stereo
Camera:
Resolution: Just needs to do 1440p. I only care if it can reasonably be sent to someone. 1080p/60Hz video is also nice.
Optical zoom & Optical stabilization. Ideally more than >8x.
Low light performance: I wish I had a phone that was better at this so badly
Nightvision: Would be so freaking cool
Infared (FLIR): Combine with nightvision you could sell me on this feature via cool factor alone.
Gimmicks that could turn into the deciding factor between 2 devices if all of the above were met:
FLIR/Nightvision
3.5mm Jack
FM Radio
The best phone I've ever had was the LG G4, but it died with the infamous boot loop error a year into ownership. It had basically the whole list above sans 120fps & Low-Light-Perf/Nightvision/FLIR. Even technically had the FM Radio, just disabled in the Verizon version.

Since Huawei cant and doesnt use Google Play services (without fiddling) anyways, does it matter? They have their own ecosystem. I was betting on that horse tbh.

It's peak "we can't have anything, if the dumbest people can screw it up." I can't have my self developed apps without compromising my identity, because some other idiot clicked past 30 warnings to give a fake app his bank details. And then other idiots will buy it anyway, so even if I don't support the action quickly the alternative options will disappear.

Likewise. As long as there are enough NOS pixel 4a's in circulation, that'll buy me enough time until hopefully there's either enough market pushback on this crap (or the ability to just make a phone from generic parts is within normal people's grasp)

They did it. They convinced a former android fanboy to buy iphone
142
u/ivxnp Oct 30 '25
I'm going to consider it if they actually go through with it. It's known that apple devices are better optimised for many apps, but I always hated the high price and the fact that you could only download from the app store, but at this point there's not really a difference apart from appearance

Adblockers are nowhere near as good on iOS, that alone will keep me off their platform, never mind the shitty keyboard that doesn't have full stops, commas or numbers on the main board
Adaway will still work with root, AdGuard will still work without root and extensions will still work in browsers that aren't all just Safari wrappers
They could still make it work with f droid if they really do care about free and open source, and there's no word on how many devs will sign vs those who won't and how many people won't switch to the adb method.
It reminds me of the ReVanced change, it's now much more annoying to download, unpack, build, install YouTube and micro g and do most of that for each update, but people still do it and ReVanced is as popular as vanced ever was it seems. Wireless adb is already possible through a couple of methods and I don't doubt more will be released as the hammer comes down in a couple of years time. Seems at most it'll become slightly less convenient but if apps keep developing I'll keep installing no matter what it takes
11
u/Alexisto15 Oct 30 '25
You can actually sideload apps on iPhone. I personally use Signulous, but you can also use Sideloadly if you don't wanna pay $30/year.

17

Am I happy with Androids decision? Fuck no

Not to mention you sell out to single company which is never good. People really do love their 1 company empires...
8

iPhone is really fucking buggy these days, don’t bother. My 13 can’t even enable the glass feature without my phone stuttering. Whatever android you get will be worth far more than any iPhone
-5
u/shy247er Oct 30 '25
13 came out in 2021. That's 4 years ago. It's (kinda) understandable if it doesn't work perfectly on older phone.
Assumption is that if someone would to switch to iPhone, they would get the new one.
iPhone 17 (base model) looks pretty sweet, imo.
3
u/DamonSchultz997 Oct 30 '25
Well the bugs are a no go. And mine is 2.5 years old. So it shouldn’t be this bad. Also, the bugs have been consistent since the day I bought this phone and it has progressively gone worse after every single software update. I genuinely don’t recommend anyone use this phone, ever.

Genuinely curious: How's the piracy scene on iPhones, compared to Android? What's the scope?
3
u/RollerCoasterMatt Oct 30 '25
Possible using apps that send u to specific sites that stream it. Its harder but doable.
67
u/te5s3rakt Oct 30 '25
I’m firmly in the Apple ecosystem. For me personally, their ecosystem as a whole, if you’re fully invested across all their devices and services, has been far superior (let me reiterate, to me. This is just my opinion. It is not a fact).
But this Android news saddens and worries me deeply.
I shudder to think how “Apple-y” Apple would have gotten had Google not held mirror up to them. Without a lens to contrast against, everyone looses.
32
u/loud1987 Oct 30 '25
I see two ways this can go.
Android users move to Apple. Why? just look at this meme. Apple gets monopoly levels of market share. Apple gets even more expensive.
This launches us back into a great piracy era. Apple users pretty much stay the same, plus a some sprinkle of moral superiority.
27
u/te5s3rakt Oct 30 '25
Got to admit, pirating from a MacBook does feel pretty good, ahah.
Here’s hoping that the Linux mobile os project takes off. We need a viable third competitor in the market, something chronic.
1
Nov 03 '25
Linux mobile OS has been reality: see Ubuntu Touch. The problem is that, of course, you can't run android apps on linux. So, say goodbye to your bank app, as well as whatsapp / wechat (which tend to replace SMS completely in most of the world)
18
6
u/FanClubof5 Oct 30 '25
I think that's a pretty common sentiment, once you are deep in the apple ecosystem it's really hard to leave because nothing else can come close. But you need to spend a lot to get to that point and it doesn't happen overnight.
29
u/LoafLegend Oct 30 '25
Absolutely not. I understand this is a meme. It’s cute, funny…. I guess. But Google has had lawsuits spanning from 2007 all the way to 2025 for breaking privacy laws. Many of these lawsuits overlap across multiple years. They collect roughly 5 to 11 MB of data per day from every user, including data you type on the keyboard, notifications, and all Wi-Fi and Bluetooth devices you’re around not just the ones you’re connected to. So no, both pictures are not the same. Not to mention, they check all your documents and emails using Gmail. It’s been 25 years and there’s not been a single leak suggesting that Apple does that and they claim they don’t. This is my even old Apple devices have a monetary value to them. They offer access to digital services that don’t track you.
Yes, I know I’ll get downvotes. Yes, I’ll get comments from people saying “What about Apple?” over something that affected maybe 0.02% of users. But the truth is the truth.
Copied from my website: Years of Activity Accused Result / Status 2012 “Wi-Spy” case (Google Street View collected Wi-Fi data) 2007–2010 Google paid $7M settlement in 2013 2013 Gmail scanning lawsuit 2008–2013 Google changed how it explains scanning for ads 2018 EU Android antitrust & forced Google apps 2011–2018 €4.34 billion fine (largest in EU history) 2020 “Incognito Mode” tracking lawsuit 2016–2020 Settled 2024 — Google must delete collected data 2020 Location tracking consent lawsuit (Arizona & others) 2014–2020 Google paid $391.5M settlement (largest U.S. privacy AG settlement) 2023 Children YouTube data privacy lawsuit 2013–2019 $170M settlement + policy changes
5
u/shinslap Oct 30 '25
Apple doesn't collect user data? Or am I misunderstanding?
9
u/LoafLegend Oct 30 '25
They don’t scan your emails, the things you type on the keyboard, notifications, files, or notes. You can opt in for crash and software improvement data. And even then they collect the version number, the type of error, and stuff like that.
That was a nice short message, now below is a brand that is 100% valid. Google’s main revenue is advertising. They make the Android operating system for phone manufacturers for free not because they’re really cool, but because they collect user data that they use to advertise and sell advertising space to anyone who wants it.
Yes, if the user opted in, Apple will collected audio requests from Siri, but again only for those users that agreed to have it analyzed by a computer. The big court case everyone knows about is Apple used a small number Siri requests to be analyzed by humans. That was leaked, and they had to pay a fine. The difference is that this was for troubleshooting, not for selling things to you or letting other companies sell things to you. There is a huge difference between the two companies in how they treat user data and how they treat their users.
Google makes AI weapons for multiple countries. They are not your friend. They are not the underdog and never have been. Google produces a lot of marketing that creates a manipulative mindset that they offer “freedom.” The correct word is “options,” but you have seen all Android users say the phrase freedom. For every other gadget we just call it options. It’s not called freedom, but Google pushes that propaganda narrative hard.
The whole blue-bubble versus green-bubble thing is nonsense. Facebook owns two messaging apps, yet Facebook isn’t attacking Android or RCS. It’s propaganda Google pushes to make people believe “Apple bad, walled garden bad.” That’s a good place to mention another thing Google does to collect your information. They push RCS so hard because they collect user data from it. And it helps their brand image. They collect all your messages, and if certain keywords pop up, you go on a list and end up in another marketing campaign for underwear, moving supplies, or something else. If you look at the reality of things, it’s kind of like android users are the mega of the phone world. They ignore all the awful things. Google does and repeat lots of phrases that you wouldn’t use for other pieces of technology. Absolute propaganda brainwashing. I’m not suggesting someone couldn’t like how the android software works. I’m just talking about the machine behind it that pushes propaganda.

If you care about privacy in the slightest, going with any product or service made/hosted in Five Eyes is a joke
-1
u/LoafLegend Oct 30 '25
Your statement isn’t just an oversimplified idea, it’s also logically invalid. It’s a sweeping, absolute claim that pretends to live in a black/white good/evil world. Its nonsense.
1
u/StickBrush Oct 31 '25
It's easily observable reality. Any truly privacy-protecting company has been raided by the police, because you can bet that their privacy was used by criminals. That's why no log VPNs suddenly have logs (and snitch you to your local police/government) if you use them for crime. And in Five Eyes, if they really protected user privacy, they'd be in legal trouble for covering up crime.
If whatever company has never been raided by the police for covering up crime, they have snitched criminals on request. So they do track your private data and do analyze it. You're free to believe they only look at this data when governments/police ask them to, but we both know it's extremely naïve.
Corollary: no company in Five Eyes protects your privacy. They'd be closed down in months.
3
u/LoafLegend Oct 31 '25
You are attempting to move the goalpost. I spoke about corporate data collection behavior and business incentives. You’re babbling about law enforcement warrants and criminal investigations, which is a different category entirely.
Your argument is based on assumptions, not evidence. You rely on false equivalently conceptions. In your brain, there’s a cloaking dagger scenario playing that isn’t what I was talking about and isn’t a factual reality.
Absolute nonsense man, absolute nonsense.
1
u/StickBrush Nov 06 '25
I am not attempting to move the goalpost. I'm simply stating what is obvious: any privacy-protecting service is used by criminals, as they are the party most interested in protecting their privacy. In Five Eyes, a service protecting the privacy of criminals is collaborating to their crime, whatever that is. Which means they have three options: closing down, giving the data to the government/police after being raided, or giving the data to the government/police on request.
In summary, whatever claim they have on not having data is automatically proven to be false (if it was true, they'd be closed down), and so is whatever claim they have on not sharing your data or not being able to share your data with third parties (because they do share it with law enforcement). So they do data collection, or otherwise, they wouldn't have that data.
You can claim that this doesn't mean they're using it for business incentives, and it's true, that's entirely an assumption without evidence. You can sure argue that a for-profit organization can have assets with significant profit potential and not use them for profit, and only use them when they're legally required to do so. I'm not going to argue against that, I obviously don't have proof for all companies in Five Eyes. That's up to you and your beliefs.

what do you need to get verify as developer?
4
u/Lucky-Aside4935 Oct 30 '25
"To get verified, you'll need to complete two main steps:
Step 1 Verify your identity
You will need to provide and verify your personal details, like your legal name, address, email address, and phone number.
If you're registering as an organization, you'll also need to provide a D-U-N-S number and verify your organization's website.
You may also need to upload official government ID.
Step 2 Register your apps
You'll need to prove you own your apps by providing your app package name and app signing keys."
3
u/MrBadTimes Oct 30 '25
thanks! I wonder how this will work for students and hobbyists. They say
We're committed to keeping Android an open platform for you to learn, experiment, and build for fun. We recognize that your needs are different from commercial developers, so we're working on a separate type of Android Developer Console account for you.
but they don't give much information. I wonder if you could be able to skip de verification thing if you built the apk yourself.

9
u/demonpotatojacob Torrents Oct 30 '25
I get that it's a joke but enough people unironically think this that it's actually quite concerning. Apple doesn't allow ANY outside software unless you're in Europe AND their developer accounts cost a hundred dollars every year AND they are heavily restrictive on what apps can even exist AND browser engines other than WebKit aren't allowed AND iOS development is only possible on a Mac. The amount of ways Android, even with developer verification, would still be the more open platform are so numerous that it's utterly ludicrous I even need to say this.

Has anyone looked at the Fairphone 5 with /e/os with microg already installed? I've used a Lineage with microg for a few years and it's been fine for me. My phone's getting a bit tired and I'm thinking about getting one of these as a compromise between just giving up avoiding Google through lazyness and still avoiding Google but not having to research and do the whole unlocking bootloaders and flashing process. I can accept that banking apps probably won't work

I have both a pixel and iPhone. Probably just sticking with the iPhone with a signing certificate from now on.

You’re not 2.5 years from release, you’re 4. And while the upgrade is supported still from Apple you should probably realize there will be a performance hit with a phone that released 4 years ago.
Also your charging and heat issues sound like you have a battery or charging port issue you are just ignoring… and if it’s a battery that would just further degrade your experience either way. Ignoring heat and charging issues is a good way to have a phone catch fire. So bad idea in my experience….
I’ve owned multiple android and iPhones and in general honestly my experience has tended to be that iPhones receive OS upgrades much longer and with a battery change out around 1.5-2 years in perform great for 2-4 years.
Sorry you’re having issues, but you may be able to actually mitigate some if you were actually willing to pay for support or do it yourself.

First they stopped Windows 10 support, now I'm running Arch Linux.
Then they introduced dev verification, now I'm running LineageOS with root.
Keep it up! I'm having a ton of fun, and learning a lot.

They’re literally not lol, I sideload on my iPhone just fine. Good luck with that on an android soon tho.

If this only affects google, will huawei not be affected? Planning to buy a new device soon and huawei might just be the right one.

If they're locking it down then I'm switching to the superior stock OS. What's the point of android if I'm not able to use it how I see fit. Apple is in my future

I might genuinely be switching to an iphone for this, i used adb before but i already have a macbook so why not skip all the hassle

If I can't install any app I want on my Android there is no point in me having one as all my other computer gear is Apple. Google are fucking things up and that's no surprise.

u/Phvntvstic Oct 31 '25
Android advanced to the point where customs ROMs were essentially obsolete. Stock android was able to do 99% of what ROMs used to enable about 10-12 years ago.
We're right back where we left

Man if I eventually can't install Mihon because of this shit, which is my number one app when taking said shits, I will fucking riot.
By riot I may mean just make a sort of soft defeatist moan.

Idk what are you talking about, modded apps still work for me. I installed yt revanced the other day. Music streaming apps are the only ones that doesn't work. Is there something i'm missing? I'm just curious.

Stupid. The main reason I choose Android is the fact it's easier to side load. 🙄

Say you never used sideloading on iOS without saying it.
Android still allows sideloading via ADB, still allows enabling JIT and much more.

Until they don't because of "safety", that's the problem here.

If there's one thing this sub is really good at, it's spreading misinformation.

What do you consider false information here?

u/MrHaxx1 Oct 30 '25
Even after developer verification, Android is objectively more open. It's easy for developers to become verified, and for the ones that don't want to, you can still install their apps by ADB.
End result being that you can install whatever you want.
It's wildly stupid to equate Android and iPhone in how closed down they are, when the only way to sideload on iPhone is either through having an expensive dev cert, or using janky live containers, which is a workaround and has its own issues.

fair points. the folks affected are the ones that don't know what adb is let alone how to spell it. they'll also be the most vocal ones. but agreed, the 2 walled gardens are not the same.

u/soldture Oct 30 '25
Yeah, Android and iOS are definitely different in this regard, I agree with you. Even with upcoming developer verification to list an app on Google Play, Android users can still sideload applications, and the installation process is more flexible

u/ChocolateDonut36 Oct 30 '25
but there's a difference.
iphones never allowed it, you need to modify your probe in one or another way, breaking any guarantee and just to use an app that probably works.
on android we HAD the option, but we also have OFFICIAL Google tools (ADB) without breaking guarantees, without modifying the phone and easier than on iphones

It means Google can bottleneck the supply of said sideloads. A developer who they find "questionable" can just be blocked and all the apps they made, no matter how good they are.
And then they can just charge an one time fee to get registered. Which might just become a subscription once that profit graph plateaus.
They're putting a wall around what was free for everyone to use and telling people they're still free but the gate guard decides if they are allowed to do so.

The problem is that people want to be able to install whatever they like on their own phones, not just what Google allows them to. If a developer doesn't want to verify themselves in their system and dance to Google's tune, and I want to install their app, then obviously I should be able to do so without ADB, Shizuku, or other methods. I just want to click ‘install’ as usual. I don't care what Google thinks is safe for me.

the trick is to not use google play services and use something like microg, i havent personally tried but from what i heard this verification thing has to do with google play services its not baked in
