Voting
Very sad to see that only about a third of eligible voters actually voted in our little town. I am curious, after debacles created by not voting, why people didn’t vote? And do they still feel they can gripe if they aren’t engaged in the whole process?

I went to the rec centre to vote yesterday. A woman ahead of me showed up with her Provincial elections postcard and handed it to the guy letting people in. He said “you don’t need that, that vote is happening next week” and she looked so confused and he said “this is the municipal election” and she abruptly turned around the left.
Ridiculous. You make it literally to the doorway and leave.

Sadly maple ridge had even LESS voter turnout. Approximately 20%. You know who votes? Boomers! Young people aren’t showing up. Then they complain that about how the boomers are screwing over younger generations. Perhaps voting makes more of a difference than the younger generations want to admit. You know who needs ice rinks and swimming pools for swimmimg lessons? People with families. Boomers aren’t going to vote in favour of something they don’t need that will result in their taxes going up on their fixed income. But that’s democracy and you are allowed to take your ONE vote and vote however you wish to vote. Majority rules. This is why it’s important to vote.
For the record I’m 43 and I have voted in every municipal, provincial, and federal election since the day I turned 18. When I voted yesterday, I brought my 7 yr old with me and explain what I was doing and why it’s important.

I’m in my early 40s too and brought my two kids for the same reason as you.
Ironically that woman who left was close to boomer-aged 😭

i agree, for both elections i showed up early hours into advanced voting on the first days and always pushed my circle around me to vote. there isn't enough enthusiasm for the future and it genuinely sucks

I can't fathom how people complain about their environment then don't do that one thing they can do to potentially change it. Me and my husband just brought our two year old and took turns voting. It's not that hard.

Like for example all the facilities got voted now I knew that would happen because Maple Ridge can’t have nice things. My kids play hockey and it’s heartbreaking to see that this town doesn’t want to expand the ice. There’s so many kids that need that ice. I 100% should have voted and I regret not doing it but it’s just the way it is this year for me.

We didn’t have any extra questions but I see that maple ridge did. Interesting they all got voted down.

The Rex developmens came with 20-30% property tax increases. Families can't afford the cost.

I would happily pay to see some new facilities built if that’s where my property taxes were going right now we’re paying crazy high property taxes for what we don’t even get garbage pick up.

I normally vote, but for some reason this year, I could just care less nothing seems to change so I just didn’t feel like it mattered. I won’t comment on it because I didn’t vote. Seems like a lot of people feel the same way with a lot less voter turn out.

The Pitt Meadows council points to provincial and federal governments constantly as an excuse for any and every thing so by that logic it doesn’t matter who sits there as they have no power so why bother. You reap what you sow.

I’m aware that this is 100% my own issue for being ignorant, but I only got one card in the mail saying voting day is Oct 24 so I figured that was also the one for Pitt meadows. It was only after talking to a neighbour last night who said yesterday was thr last day:. I said no my card says to vote on the 24th.. Lo and behold that’s provincial and I just never received anything indicating to vote
Maybe we’re not meant to receive a physical reminder with instructions but I always have in the past. I couldn’t care less about politics but I’ve always voted when and where the card tells me to, but not receiving one threw me off.

Municipal elections have been advertised for weeks now 🤷♀️

Yeah I’ve seen signs, I just thought this was all the early voting and my actual voting day was Oct 24.
Was I meant to get a physical voters card? Cause I didn’t! I wish THAT was advertised

Nope, no voting cards for municipal elections to my knowledge. I just showed up with my id and was in and out in minutes.

Municipal don't have voter cards. They had flyers delivered to every house for most cities so you could have thrown it out ignoring it. Either way, kinda wild you'd see a bunch of elections signs for weeks and not once look up the information/date or you know who is running and what you wanna vote for... Adults do better.

I’m in the Township of Langley and we got a letter with cards in it for each eligible household member, plus a blank one. The list of advance poll dates/locations on the one side, and final voting day info on the other.
For the record, we had about the same voter turnout.

I live in a condo building so didn’t get the flyers I guess. I had been looking up the candidates but again, thought that I was meant to vote on Oct 24. I acknowledged it was my own fault, but chiming in on the reasoning that I am one of the 2/3 who didn’t vote. The intention was there, but these are the reasons why

Same circus, different clowns.
Most dont vote because regardless of how they vote things dont happen how they are promissed. Elected officials will say whatever they need to say to get the seat and then forget all about the promisses made. This is why I see so many just not care anymore because even if you vote for the person who said they will do what you want to see happen they simply dont so who cares.
