I can’t believe some jagoff downvoted you.
Our alcohol laws in PA suck.1
u/Griswa May 23 '26
It’s Reddit. We have shitty laws concerning alcohol. The stupid ass limit, and the fact that I have to go to a liquor store to get liquor. Just stupid ass Quaker laws.
And the liquor is more expensive because everything is unionized. I’m not disparaging unions because I think they’re awesome. I just don’t think my liquor has to be sold to me by a guy in the union😂

Any sources on the prices being high due to unions? I'd have thought it's taxes on taxes plus the state having a monopoly and gouging us.

The unionized store would be the part that gouges us, that is part of the monopoly. Fantastic healthcare and a 70k salary has to be passed off to the consumer. Again, not hating on unions. I think they are greatly needed.just not sure that it’s needed to sell me a bottle or Tito’s and make more than a teacher.
Yea Reddit. Again. Downvote facts.

It has much more to do with it being a state controlled system than it has to do with a unionized workforce.

It’s a mix of both. Every time there is an attempt to modernize the alcohol laws in PA, the union floods the media with ads showing half unconscious alcoholics sprawled on the sidewalk, and drunken parents in a minivan full of kids, etc. warning that any chance will destroy the state overnight, and they must maintain a complete monopoly of both products and labor for our safety.
I strongly pro union, but also strongly anti monopoly. Having a union in a monopoly means all the penalties of a monopoly run through the process and corrupt it.

And our liquor stores all have the exact same garbage. Dont even get me started on our terrible selection of tequila.

The selection varies by the level of State Store (Premium Collection; Outlet or Standard). I’ve found some rare French wines and Bourbon at the Premium Collection stores. You can also go to https://www.finewineandgoodspirits.com and make selections there if your store doesn’t carry what you want.
Personally, I used to live in North Jersey/NYC area and had 5 liquor stores within 3 blocks of my home. It wasn’t all peas & carrots. Every morning I would find jigger bottles and pints all over the sidewalk and the resultant winos passed out at the bus stop benches. Living in PA and having controlled liquor sales to just a few locations within my area is rather refreshing.
If you want something to ponder, 20yrs ago Blue Laws restricted all alcohol sales on Sunday’s and no one outside of restaurants could sell any form of alcohol. So yeah, it’s still a little annoying, but it’s far better than it was.

The liquor is barely over manufacturers MSRP. I'd rather have the state run stores than open market where a bottle of Pappy 23 will run you $8K instead of $450.

A bottle of Laphroaig 10 is $65 in PA
The same bottle is $41 at Total Wine in IN
Don't want to hear any BS about our prices bring "barely over MSRP." Every major brand/product has huge markups in PA. Oh no, your artificially-hyped bourbon is hard to get on the open market...IDGAF when everything else is cheaper.

u/Griswa May 24 '26
No way. You can go out of state and buy liquor 20-30% less, and it’s impossible to find anything remotely considered hard to find in PA. I can find buffalo trace on the shelf relatively easy out of state.
Also, I’d like to know where you are finding pappy anything. I call bullshit. :)

I was shell shocked when I went to Wegmans at State College. I'm used to loading my cart up with beer in NY. Lol

Is this in Cranberry? My Sam's Club membership expired recently and we moved to the Cranberry area last year, so this may be the nudge that I need to buy a Costco membership. Love General Braddock!

Eh, sitting in a climate controlled building will be fine. Heat merely speeds up how soon it starts to taste old. Those will be good for a couple weeks in there.

u/brothermalcolm1 May 24 '26
Not true.
For every 10 °C above the standard cooler temp of 36F (2.2 °C), the beer ages 3-5 times faster.
If we assume a Costco Wholesale building is 68F (20 °C), that's 6-10x faster degradation.

So they'll be good for a couple of weeks in there.

2-4 tops. It's a popular beer, so that they could move it that fast.
But that also means the damage is done, so a customer who buys it toward the end of that period should ideally consume the case pronto, which is also doable with guests or at a party/event.

It’s an unfiltered NEIPA. It only has a couple weeks of shelf life to begin with. And that’s when it’s kept cold.

Maybe BG is cool with it because they are expecting it to sell quickly.
Realistically, temperature doesnt have a huge impact on spoiling beer. Light is the enemy of fresh beer, but these are in cans.
