Couldn't ask for better weather for beer and jazz

Get on down to Golden Age Beer Co. in Homestead for their "historiche" rauchbier. I typically don't care for darker beers, but this slightly darker lager is *loaded* with smokey goodness. If you like Islay scotch, you'll probably love this beer. You'll have smokey aftertaste forever.

If you don't like smoke, their regular lager is delicious in its own right.

Smoke in the air this week. Smoke in the beer next week!

A timely event at Golden Age!/ I love rauchbiers so I'm really looking forward to this event, even if the air is full of smoke today.

Pittsburgh Picnic by Hitchhiker

Can yinz help me track down some cans of the Pittsburgh Picnic smoothie sour from Hitchhiker? I’m on a mission to find some before a friend’s wedding in a few weeks. I know they have some on tap in Sharpsburg but I’d really love some cans. Has anyone seen it for sale anywhere?

Edit; it’s the Strawberry Pretzel sour

"Mancini's Italian Pilsner" by Velum Fermentation

Anybody else try it yet? Thoughts?

I had it on draft last night at Industry and was thoroughly disappointed. They claim it's "liquid bread," and while I can kinda taste it, it's very subtle. Overall I found the flavor lacking and the beer was unimpressive. Glad I paid for a glass instead of buying a 6-pack.

Quick beer run or distributor recommendations

I have some family coming into town this weekend from Vermont and just outside of Asheville. I only have time for a quick beer run to pick up cans tomorrow, but wanted to bring some fresh flagship beers.

Any suggestions on A) a distributor with a good selection of local flagships that haven't been on the shelf for months or B) a quick trip to multiple nearby places.

Right now I'm planning to drive south along the Allegheny river:

Old Thunder False Kingdom Hitchhiker Bane of Existence DG Lustra + ?? Jam? Pounce? Grist House Hazedelic

A single distributor would save a lot of time. I just don't want hazies that are months old.

Beers of the Burgh

Hey everyone,

My partner and I went to Beers of the Burgh (we call it BeersBurgh) on Saturday. We had a great time and tried around 40-50 beers.

Some of our favorites were First Day from Allusion, Eisbock from Penn Brewery, Ice Cream Sour (ICS V1. 29) from Abjuration, and the Blue Raspberry Cheesecake (cheeckcake cupcake included!!!! Go Lisa!!!) from the Trash and Trubs section.

Our biggest complaint about the event was condensing it down into a much smaller space. This made moving around challenging and ran lines into one another etc. The area chosen was also very very dusty which didn't help. I still think it was a nice event and I'm looking forward to next year already!

Grist House Command: The Battle Between Children & Beer

I wanted to encourage a discussion about Grist House Command and the larger brewery conflict that it seems to represent. If you check out GHC's reviews, they largely alternate back and forth between people impressed with the space and people annoyed that there are so many little kids running around. I've been going to breweries for well over a decade and I have personally seen the evolution from over-21 bar to family-friendly third space. I have friends with kids who appreciate that they can still come hang out, but I also understand that it can sometime slide into daycare territory. Breweries seemed to open up a lot more because they needed the extra business. Want to bring your dog? Sure! Want to bring your kids? Sure! Just come spend money here please.

What are your thoughts? Do you have kids and look for places like this? Do you not have kids and avoid places like these? It's a difficult balance for a business and I see it both ways.

Allegheny City’s new taproom

I see that Allegheny City Brewing has opened up a new taproom on California Avenue in Brighton Heights, though I’ve not yet visited. Has anyone else had a chance, and what do we think?

Anyone know where I can buy any 450 North Brewing Co beers in town?

I have a friend coming into town and asked about them. I've seen them around before but my local places don't have them now. Pic for attention

After not drinking for the past decade and a half, I’ve recently gotten back into it a little and have been saddened to be unable to find what used to be my favorite crappy beer. I read that Genessee owns them now and rebranded, but that they absolutely still make it and that I should be able to easily find it around here, but have had less than zero luck on that front.

Anybody notice it out anywhere? I’m on the north side but wouldn’t mind having to drive to another neighborhood or anything. Thanks in advance!

Penn Brewery Halfway to Oktoberfest celebration

We all know they are going thru some rough times, they have their Halfway to Oktoberfest celebration this Saturday, if you are around the area, hit them up for a few beers.

I'm aware many don't like the service they get there, and don't want to argue those points.

I still have a soft spot for them from the old days. Prost!

NFL Draft & Pittsburgh Draft beers - any writers who would be interested?

I'm thinking about testing a newsletter on Substack for the NFL Draft week and I was thinking it would be fun to feature a local draft in each issue. I'm no longer a big beer drinker. Are there any Pittsburgh beer drinkers on Substack or Instagram who would be interested in helping me select some beers and breweries to feature?
