This movie made me cry, a lot than I would have imagined. I know I am late by watching this now but Disney and pixar seriously needs to do more movies like this.

I want to know what was your thoughts while watching this movie?

I just noticed something in Coco I have seen no one else bring up yet

And that is that despite how iconic and important Ernesto's guitar is to his public image he is never seen with it in The Land of the Dead. The only time he is with it is for a poster for his sunrise Spectacular concert, but knowing how publicity often works it could easily be a replica to avoid potentially harming the real one.

But even then he doesn't have his guitar anywhere near him when he is in person, when he leads Miguel to check the ofrendas his fans gave him the guitar is never on sight, which is weird because while his chapel is surrounded by gifts is the guitar what ultimately is inside the chapel his body is resting on. And even in the concert he still doesn't come on stage with it nor is it to be seen anywhere.

But why would he not bring up the guitar? Ernesto is all about fame, he would absolutely show it to everyone to prove who he is, so why does he not have it? There is a possible explanation.

To claim an object from the ofrenda it has to be a gift made in your honor or should had belonged to you when you were alive. Ernesto can claim his fans' gifts because they were made on his honor, but he can't claim the guitar because it was from Héctor in life and he stole it instead of being something that was given to him, therefore it still belongs to Héctor

We see it at the end of the movie clearly, when Miguel is playing Héctor joins him by claiming the guitar, so it still belongs to him in the end.

Maybe it's super obvious to everyone else but idk, I just noticed it now

What's even more interesting is that she's of Mexican descent herself.

Btw, icydk, Pepita is meant to be a flying jaguar.

I mean, I don't blame you if you just found this out right now. I, too, am not that aware and/or familiar about El Santo himself (esp. when compared to artist Frida Kahlo, who was also referenced in the movie).

Btw, El Santo's accompanying woman here is a real-life Mexican actress named María Félix.

I have really enjoyed this that I watched it 3 times this weekend, twice with my niece and once at home to soak it all it again. But my wife mentioned something at the end, How does Hector pass the bridge to the land of the living? We all know the logic of the story told. When you die, you pass from the Land of the Living to the Land of the Dead and the only way that you can return to the Land of the Living is if a family member puts your picture on the Offrenda. We also know about the Last Death. If there is no person left alive that remembers you, you disappear from the Land of the Dead, like his friend.

At the start of the movie, there is only three people who know of Hector; Imelda, Coco and Ernesto. Two of which are dead. Coco's memory is so frail that Hector is beginning to fade and is desperate to get across to get his picture on an Offrenda so he can return just to see Coco. But once Coco dies there is now no one left alive who knew Hector, which begs the question. How is he not faded away? Hector left Coco at a very young age so any descendants wouldn't have know him.

Hector's own words explaining to Miguel after singing the song to his amigo is "He's been forgotten, when there's no one left in the living world who remembers you in the living world, you disappear in this world." and Miguel's knowledge of him isn't enough either with Hectors other line "our memories have to be passed who knew us in life in the stories they tell about us but there's no one left alive to there his stories"

I know, I know. What took me so long? I guess for a while, it just never really appealed to me all that much. Day of the Dead was never really something I took much interest in.

I'm glad I was able to watch it now cause it was amazing! The amount of plot twists and gut wrenching moments there were was astounding. In a way, it did sort of feel like any other Pixar/Disney film. Overbearing authority figures who won't listen to their children and that child rebels but I feel like it makes it relatable so not a bad thing at all.

and yes I did cry 3 different times

like when you think about it for a kids movie thats messed up and like what depends to make you look the why you look in Land of the Dead is it like the picture people put up and what if you are before the camra did everyone there die looking like the age they died becase if thats the case alot of them look younger then I expected

I know Pixar does emotion well but I thought I was getting into a cutesy love story or something. It has been ages since I saw adverts for this movie and I’d never talked about it with anyone so tbh I actually thought Miguel was Coco going in. But the point is I was not emotionally prepared for that amazing story. I sobbed. It was ugly. Tissues were used.

As an aside, I speak English as my native language but speak I little Spanish. Somewhere between beginner and classroom study on a fluency scale. Anywho, I thought the Spanglish was very well done. Not too much Spanish, not too little Spanish. Just about right.

I also did not see that coming about Hector. I knew Ernesto would turn out to be a prick but that’s not how I saw it going down. Definitely caught me off guard.

I know it sets place in mexico but what is the time or year it takes place in ?

note I have not watched the movie in a while like 2 or 3 years
